How Did I Overlook This Dewalt Drill???

  • I have tested and owned quite a few Dewalt Drills and when I was picking from the Dewalt Atomic's latest releases I decided to test the Drill Driver only and not the hammer drill. So imagine how I felt when I learned that the Hammer Drill was packing more power!!! Well it's time to correct this oversight.

      The 800 has the same light as well. I agree that it's nice to be able to move it and even use it as a work light.

    Have to admit, was a bit skeptical when first seeing your video, but I ordered both the 794 and 799 from the Despot, getting the 794 in kit for 99.00, with 2.0 and a crappy charger, and the 799 in kit with the 3.0 21700 battery, and better charger, for 129.00! BTW, the newer 21700 3.0 is lighter than the regular 2P 3.0 XR batteries! Yes, I weighed them!
    The big take away fro me was the 799 did act and run better than the 794, even just running the drill in the air. I weighed and measured the difference and you called it on weight; Exactly 2 ounces more for the 799. Length was about 5/8- 11/16 longer for the 799. Setting the clutch was harder on the 794, and the longer collar of the 799 made it easier. I’m not a fan of compact hammer drills, but this is a good drill. Minimal run out on the chuck, and a very good clutch. So, I’m thinking the 799 is a keeper! My wallet does NOT Thank You! 😆
    Great comparison! 👍 💪🇺🇸🤝😊

    Great looks at these drills. I would definitely still reach for the 800 and 805 over the 799 obviously but this does shows it’s still a solid performer for an atomic.

      The 799 has enough performance that I can understand someone choosing it and it’s lighter than the 800 but the 794 just underperforms a little too much for me.

    I never buy a drill based on these UA-cam speed tests anyway! When I see someone try driving a ledger lock in 2nd or high range; that’s just wrong! Wanna do a real world test? Have the guy doing the testing stop to text his gf every two minutes!

    So this got me thinking about taking a DCD794 and swapping in the motor from a 799. But then I found something really interesting. At the Dewalt ServiceNet parts site the DCD794 shows an original motor part number NA071961, which under compatibility shows only that drill. But that part shows discontinued, superseded by part # NA304843 which shows compatibility with *both* DCD794 and DCD799. Indeed the DCD799 ServiceNet page shows only the latter motor. So it seems like if you need to replace your 794 motor they're going to sell you the same one from a 799. Which makes me wonder whether new 794s coming off the line now have the same power as DCD799? Seems like once they had different motors but now they may not?

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  2 місяці тому

      It’s something worth looking into. I haven’t ever seen the 794 advertised with more power but they are the same size externally until you get past the motor. In my mind it should work.

    I am hoping that although you say "I don't think at this power level you are going to be doing a lot of hammer drilling or making use of that feature" that the 799 will be able to handle the occasional home project involving brick, cinder block wall or concrete lintel?

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  18 днів тому

      For smaller anchors yes. Something larger might require some patience. How big of while do you imagine needing.
      I just wouldn’t expect to be making half inch holes very much.

      @@TinkerWithTools I can't say, Just trying to gauge what would be possible and what wouldn't. I'm thinking more like 1/4" tops. Last time I did blinds I used 5/32" and I'm not sure if I was going through a metal or concrete lintel but it was a bear. I'm thinking for 1/2" I would need a full size drill (with a handle)? As far as the DCD805, would it have similar limitations but just be faster? Thanks again.

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  17 днів тому

      The 805 will be stronger than the DCD799 but it will could be limited on the really big stuff. That being said, the sizes you are talking about should be fine with either.

    The 794 was a bad drill, i sold it and bought the m18 compact one.
    Now im curious about the 799..
    I know there is a hammer version of the compact m18 also, maybe you can compare them..

      I have video with 9 compact drills tested out in the coming week or so and I think you will get your answer on that. I don’t have the Milwaukee hammer drill but I will test this against both the 794 and 799 in the drilling and driving tests.

      Try the DCD805, it has hammer function.

    • @georgedavall9449
      @georgedavall9449 3 місяці тому

      I beg to differ there michaelas! 794 is not a ‘bad’ drill. It is not on same level as the 799, as borne out here by this video, but it is hard to beat for the size and weight. Clutch on it is very good! Yes, the 799 is only 2 ounces heavier, but the extra length affects the ‘balance/ feel’ of the drill, and it makes it feel more bulky than the 794. One doesn’t buy either one for power, or they are kidding themselves, and I certainly wouldn’t entertain doing hammer drilling of any significance with the 799! The extra length collar does make for easier rotation when setting the clutch, however. The 799 is actually a ‘whisker’ longer than the 800! And the 800 will wipe the floor with either of the Atomics! So I would say anyone considering needing the hammer function, then get the 805.
      These are my opinions based on using both, side by side. The 799 is definitely stronger. It is strange how DeWalt puts out these models, which Tinker with Tools has mentioned before. Take care ✌

    Call me crazy but now I’m thinking of keeping the DCD 800, and the 794 for lighter work, based on its nice clutch. I’m in full agreement on the 799 over the 794, but the 799 is right at same size as the 800, and is only like 4-5 ounces lighter? I’d still like to see you do that comparison between the 799 and 800, and what your opinion would be, but you duznt has to! 😆 Take care!

    Hey buddy how about testing the new DCD 793?

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  3 місяці тому

      Based on the specs it would perform similar to the 794 features in this video but it is 1/2” longer than the atomic. From what I have heard it’s just the Lowe’s version sold in the US.

    • @aciccotelli6951
      @aciccotelli6951 19 днів тому

      More interesting would be the Lowe’s DCD798 vs the HD DCD799 (not sayin by you - just curious). The 798 shows the same 404 UWO as the 793/794 on the DeWalt product pages. Did HD end up with a better drill?

  • @aciccotelli6951
    @aciccotelli6951 Місяць тому

    Interestingly, if you are anal enough (me) and read the fine print on Dewalt’s site, the 794 delivers 404 UWO vs 552 for the DCD799. BUT the fine print for the 794 says with a 2 AH battery and the 799 says with a 3 AH battery. This could account for the higher specs on the 799 but I guess your tests show an actual difference.

      @aciccotelli6951 15 днів тому

      Per DeWalt customer service ---- "The DCD799 is an upgrade of the DCD798 and it has a higher UWO regardless of the battery you are using."

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  3 місяці тому

      Size wise it is still one of the better drills. And in terms of power it will beat the dewalt 12v all day.

      @@TinkerWithTools Yeah, I think this 794, 799 came out to be paired with dcf850 and they are both super compact! I believe Milwaukee came out with the counterparts just to compete with those DeWalt Atomics.
      Now my DCD706 really seems troubled to be employed... Not only the power/size ratio but also being 3/8" is another kicker...
