DeWalt's decision to put torque, drill and hammer all on a single collar is the reason I buy Makita. I regularly go from drilling to screwdriving. I do not want to be twisting that collar between every operation. Makita's approach of a torque collar and a separate drill/drive/hammer lever is a far superior solution.
Its wrong though. Pre-drilling is very much used in a large number of applications, for example we always pre-drill a smaller hole before using a large diameter drillbit in metals, or else the large drillbit will wobble so much that the hole get the wrong diameter and often the drillbit will break from sideways forces.
3/5/23 1:30pm This video was so informative for a female with zero idea of using tools. I found some dewalt drills at a garage sale and have not used them in over a year because I didn’t know how. Thanks 🙏 this video gave me confidence that I can do it!

NOw that my dad is in cancer treatment and cant do it, I gotta get started somehow. Good place to start is this video. I have experience with some powertools but after watching thsi I think I need a hammer-drill ...regular old drill works for concrete but takes forever and heats up.
The 1/4 inch impact driver is the handiest tool available for disassembling power equipment for repair. I saved a huge amount of time recently while working on a hand held leaf blower that I had to disassemble and reassemble several times while troubleshooting what turned out to be a bad coil.
For many years I drilled holes into concrete using a regular drill. Never needed a lot of holes in concrete, but always didn't look forward to that task. I knew about hammer drills but come on, how much faster could they really be? Well I had a fair amount of concrete to drill and it was kicking my butt so I broke down and bought a hammer drill. Holy crap, couple minutes vs 30-60 minutes.
just doing a little pre-drilling on youtube. Great video, very informative. I just bought a Dewalt brushless impact + drill driver kit that was on sale and I'm doing some research.
I started out with an entry level 18v drill + driver 2 piece kit, and later on added a brushless 18v hammer drill (same brand, better model). Having 3 items means less changing of bits when doing drilling, countersinking, and driving. Really saves time and faffing about. And if you stay in one ecosystem, the batteries are interchangeable too.
Super video. I was pre-watching for several minutes, but then realized I was just watching - no "pre". I appreciate your attempt at stopping the world from referring to any drilling as "pre-drilling". Thanks!
11:50 - Does anyone know the name for this bit? I'm trying to make a pilot hole with my impact driver and all the driver kits (usually Driver/Drill bit kits) seem to not have any with the hexagonal base.
As a contractor, carpenter, framer and deck builder and Welder I only needs 2 of the 3! The impact driver and the hammer drill that's it. The one that I use for Driving Fasteners deck screws, structural lag screws and some short lag bolts while the other I use for drilling holes, pilot holes, and masonry. And in my experience I found that the drill driver alone is useless because it doesn't have a hammer function compare to the hammer drill. In the hammer drill you can also drive fasteners in there because it also have a clutch. More power and more torque than the drill driver. So Everytime I buy tools I always purchase them in a bundle kit package Impact Driver and Hammer Drill with batteries, charger and a tool bag. There's a lot of options out there a lot of selections and varieties. Either DeWalt, Makita, Bosch, Ryobi, Craftsman, Hilti, Ridgid, Flex, Hitachi/Metabo HPT and some cheap stuff like Harbor Freight Hercules and Bauer they always comes in a kit. In my opinion the best pair is the Impact Driver and the hammer drill. And in my jobsite I use 2 tool for driving Fasteners especially when pre drilling is required. Impact Driver is meant for driving Fasteners and hammer drill is mean for drilling holes. No I don't use paddle bit on any of my impact driver because that's stupid and dumb. If I want to use paddle bits I always put that thing on my hammer drill either on my DeWalt cordless or Bosch corded hammer drill.
Ok, I bought a dewalt brushless drill/driver so I could DIY a bookshelf and desk. Now I have to use it🤔so switch to SS to 1 and MSC to around 7,8 or 9 and go for it (ulp). Bit (pun!) of advice to newbies...if you plan to use your new drill tomorrow - charge the battery today 😆Thanks for the tutorial!
Late to the party... This is the most informative video on drills I have seen. I've learned some of these tips over the years by making mistakes. I wish I had a concise video explaining my power drill and drilling concrete back then. I'm glad I get to learn more today.
Pre-drilling means to drill a hole before you put the screw. You dont always do that, often you just screw it in and let it make its own hole. Drilling is when you need a hole for other things than a screw. Pre-drilling is a useful word, if i were to instruct someone i just say "remember pre-drilling here" instead of "remember to drill holes first before you put screws here". Its called pre-drilling because it is followed by screwing, a very useful word that simplifies our language. In mechanical production we use pre-drilling too, and a lot, thats were the word came from, we always drill a smaller hole before using a large diameter drillbit, or else the large drillbit will wobble so much that the hole get the wrong diameter and often the drillbit will break from sideways forces. Pre-drilling is also used when working on the inner dia in a lathe. Youre just clueless and got no real life experience, its as simple as that.
@@pflaffik Do you prestretch before a workout? No you just stretch. Likewise, you drill pilot holes before you screw. You just DRILL. There is no predrill.
which of the 3 would you recommend for a simple home use such as: making holes to hang mirrors & screwing stuff for home use? Drill/Driver, Impact Driver, & Hammer Drill To me it looks like the Hammer drill is the best all around option....
G'day, The angle of the flute (Rotations per inch) behaves like a chisel point. If you have a chisel with say a 90 degree point it is better suited to hard material but it is also better suited to some soft ones like brass and some plastics. If the chisel point is shallow say 15 degrees it will dig in easily, get blunt quickly, and try to pull its self through the job. Most drill bits will work on most material but some are better suited to some jobs. What is good for one, might not be so good tor another.
While I haven't used my new impact driver yet, I got it because I thought one of the points of using it was so you didn't have to drill (pre-drill?) a pilot hole before driving in a screw to save an extra step. Or is still common practice to drill a pilot hole for certain types of wood or applications even when you're using an impact driver? Wouldn't a regular drill driver do the job just as well (or even better since it has the torque limiter) if you already have a pilot hole?
When you were using the hammer drill on the concrete, were you using it in "hammer" mode when you drilled the hole, or only when you went to drive the concrete anchor?
4:10 my Makita drill locks the clutch when drilling but my Ingco doesn't and I think a clutch while drilling is useful so that there is less risk for breaking or stuck bits.
Super informative video, very nice work. The only thing I would say is I've never heard anyone call the collar on an impact driver a chuck, typically it's called a collet
Excellent video, very informative. I've noticed on the tables listing drill size for a pilot hole for a given screw size, the pilot holes are larger than the screw shank, but, if I use a drill to match the screw shank, it provides a much tighter fit in wood, and often results in a damaged screw in metal.
Another tip to prevent the tip (pun intended) of the bit from moving around is to start in reverse, creating a small bowl, then move forward. As for clearing out holes, it's important to keep the drill turning forward (it will not clear waste when in reverse). The tape trick on the bit is also useful anytime you need a specific depth. One question: is the combination drill (with hammer) any good? One big reason to use a hammer drill is in house foundation concrete, so if the small hammer drill does not do it, it's not very useful. I'm wondering if I should get a drill driver drill and a combination drill, or a dill driver with a true hammer drill (I'm looking to upgrade/streamline batteries). I also like having two drivers: a drilling one, a countersink one, and the impact driver to screw.
Thank you! Very informative. I have learned quite a bit from this video. Look forward to your next one. Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family.
Cool. Great tips. You can also more accurately start a hole with a twist bit running it backwards, but nothing beats a good awl....nothing but pre-drlling that is. Cabinetmaker for last 22 years.
Hi, what's your recommendation for driving screws a wood plank of 0.9cm thick (3cm wide) into a pretty hard wood plank (2" x 3") - I'm screwing upwards....working on my house ceilings; Thanks very much indeed!
Very informative video. I really like the trick you showed to make the hole straight by putting two pieces of wood in 90 degree angle around the drill bit. I will try that. Thank you. You are a good teacher.
I watched your video start to finish because of the challenge that you presented. I have been using tools since before this century began. I did not learn anything. I must say that I use the trigger to tighten my bits. But, I always finish tightening them by hand, In that, I cetainly agree with you. Had I seen this in the 20th century, I would have learned what I know now. I would respectfully ask that you edit the challenge out of this. This is a great video for someone just getting into tools. I learned about finishing holes from the other side after I messed up a door using a jig.
going from a drill driver to an impact driver was a revelation to me as i often have to drive in screws bent over driving the screw upwards from beneath the piece of wood so ive more than once had the driver ripped out of my hand , once i started using an impact thats never been a issue since
I have a dewalt flexvolt hammer drill with a 5ah battery that ive been using for 4 years for a wide range of work orders. Drilling into wood, metal, masonry… putting up drywall, studs, plywood. Even putting together floor fixtures inside stores lol. Hasnt failed me yet 👍

I wouldn't mind that 😀 Thanks so much!
Better than the "ask the builder" video!
Wow….I’ve been looking for a video like this. Finally I have found it! Thank you so much!
Thanks for this video. This is definitely one of the best videos I have ever seen on this topic. I've learned something new and useful.
You did a magnificent job on this video! Thanks so much really helped a-lot!
When you were using the hammer drill on the concrete, were you using it in "hammer" mode when you drilled the hole, or only when you went to drive the concrete anchor?
Hi, which one is good for upholstery cleaning purposes?
Which kind of drill bit did you use with the impact driver? The Dewalt drill bits have a round base and don't fit into the impact driver.
Great video. I did not know that I was using the drill wrong all this time, LOL!
My wife says im not very handy around the house.. little does she know ive been predrilling my whole life
4:10 my Makita drill locks the clutch when drilling but my Ingco doesn't and I think a clutch while drilling is useful so that there is less risk for breaking or stuck bits.
Can you use an impact drill to take off screws that have been used to fasten 2x4s onto a deck? Thanks
I don't know why they recommend a drill bit so close to the size of the screw. I've found the same thing as you....a smaller hole works much better.
Thanks for sharing! very useful, very easy to learn with your amazing explanation
Hi good day, just want to ask if i can use my cordless drill for changing car tires?
I have this dewalt impact drill and it works universally for everything in home tasks
Thanks for this excellent video. Just what I needed!
Ill get back to pre-drilling now, thanks dude 😅
Thank you! Very informative. I have learned quite a bit from this video. Look forward to your next one. Peace and good fortune and good health to you and your family.
Thank you! It's good to have you around!
Cool.
A nail set can also be used for the starting point of a drill bit to prevent travel on a board to start a hole.
Thanks, I am in the market for my first drill and this really helped me to understand the difference between all three drill types.
So glad to hear this!
Excellent video. Thanks for posting.
Really appreciate a video with clear explanations and 👍🏻correct nomenclature
Hi, when I go to Home Depot, there is a wide selection of hammer drills corded. Which one do I get?
going from a drill driver to an impact driver was a revelation to me as i often have to drive in screws bent over driving the screw upwards from beneath the piece of wood so ive more than once had the driver ripped out of my hand , once i started using an impact thats never been a issue since
I have a dewalt flexvolt hammer drill with a 5ah battery that ive been using for 4 years for a wide range of work orders. Drilling into wood, metal, masonry… putting up drywall, studs, plywood. Even putting together floor fixtures inside stores lol. Hasnt failed me yet 👍
