Quick Correction : I called the color of this shelter Ivory but it is in fact Sand. There is an Ivory (lighter) colored version available as well.
    Please excuse the mistake.

Tarp guy here. I have setup cheap tents covered by a cheap, large, rectangular tarp tied at diagonal corners, easy peasy…for years…no leaks, plenty of porch room when the rain comes. I’ve even parked the truck under the same large tarp. Thanks from…east Tennessee.

Back in the day when my kids were little our outfit included two 16' x 22' tarps: one over our cabin tent, and the other over our campsite "living area" including the picnic table. Often there was room to use half of that tarp as a carport. Many an occasion presented itself when poorly prepared campground neighbors took refuge under our tarps during intense downpours.

This should be the future of tents. Using a tarp as your fly is the easiest way to prevent leaks or to fix them. Look at the bonuses, tents sold with attachment points for a tarp/pole and with no fly would be cheaper, you would be confident of staying dry, you would have a LARGE vestibule/porch. Companies would start making tent based tarps, a buy once cry once item. The only downside I see is extra weight versus a factory fly. Imagine a defender tarp on all of your tents...even the WORST leaky tent would be usable.

If you're out in the sun in the summer, a tarp protects the fabric and makes the tent stay a lot cooler. Something I noticed on some Australian tents is there's usually a tent on top of the tent, just to keep the sun off, with air able to pass freely between the shade tarp and the tent, below.
One of the things "wrong" about tent market is all the backpackers wanting to keep the weight down so they can carry the darn thing! Then there are families with kids on a tight budget who want low prices. Most guys like me just want something sturdy that will last. $1000 is no big deal if it'll be around for many years to come.

When it's hot here in Australia, I use layers, the more layers, the less heat gets through to the middle. This tent has a good start for it.

Yeah, this tent is far too heavy for anything other then car camping.
A light tent plus a tarp makes for light weight solution that can also be cheap as you can get some cheap light tents, but they tend to be sensitive to extreme weather, but a tarp solves that problem.

I do motorcycle camping and have spent years trying to find the holy grail of a tent and every tent has fallen short in some way. I've been looking for a tent that stores compact, easy to setup and tare down, breathable in hot climates and water proof. It's been so frustrating watching your videos and you show a new tent that looks perfect (Instant Pop up for example) but then has major problems (extremely hot, leaks, expensive or small). I just wanted to raise awareness for the small group of motorcycle campers and hope you keep us in the back of your mind when picking tents to review. I'm currently using is the Sierra clip flashlight 2. Keep up the great work

I stayed in a different kind of two layered tent in the hot desert. After 11 days when it was time to leave I was removing the tent pegs and when it collapsed I heard that unmistakable loud hissing noise of a sand viper angered by the disturbance. It slithered away and I thanked my stars that I was safe all the time I spent in the tent.

    • @2006Whippet
      @2006Whippet 2 місяці тому +3

Since this obviously isn't a backpacking tent, I'd say calling it a 1 person tent is accurate. If you're car camping with this tent, you're going to be bringing along more creature comfort items than you would while backpacking, necessitating the need for more room. Plus, you're going to want more room overall to change clothes, get out of any rain that rolls through, etc. It's not uncommon to see 2 people at a campground using a 4-6 person tent. If weights and size aren't a concern, why not go bigger.

Snow Peak tarps are the closest thing to the vintage MSR Parawing 19' I own. The MSR Parawing is based on the Moss Parawing as MSR bought Moss 20+yrs ago. Some of the biggest MSR and Moss collectors are Japanese. The MSR and Moss tarps were nylon, and the Snow Peak tarps are polyester. Moss tarps were 70d nylon, and my MSR is 210d nylon, the strongest tarp I have ever seen

I have had a similar setup for years. A Eureka! Spitfire 2.5 and 12' or 16' Noah's tarp. An advantage of this is the ability to use the tent without the tarp if desired. I salvaged the front pole from an old canvas wall tent that a neighbor had thrown out. Finding durable, tall adjustable tent/tarp poles that are reasonably priced has been difficult for me.

The inner reminds my of my Eureka Timberline 2. It also has that Taffeta material across the top, and with the rain fly installed I don't have condensation inside. As a matter of fact, I'll dry my towel on a rope attached across the inside of the top, even if it's raining. I've used that style now for at least 30 years. It's smaller than this one, but that's because I'm always on my motorcycle, and packing lite is important.

I’m slightly obsessed with Japanese craftsmanship and culture, but, I set up a decent tarp over any tent, can be super cheap, makes for a bomb proof setup and I’ve used it in Arizona monsoons multiple times with perfect results, I have that gold armor 10x12 tarp from Amazon, price has gone up but it’s less than $40, a cheap rain fly will handle anything that blows in or even if your tarp develops drips, I always give my stuff a silicone spray and check it out with a hose but…
Save your money, put a tarp over your cheap tent, take the rain fly off for ventilation and you’re still covered, boom!

Doesn't offer much above what I already use with the OneTigris net inner I have, plus the Aqua tarp and 2 Green Elephant poles, which in total maybe cost $180USD when I got all of it. Biggest thing this offers is sealable door flaps, but If I broke down and just carried another 6x6 tarp to act as a wind break, or even my poncho, I should be fine from misting rain.

Maybe in Japan, they use the inside of the tent for more activities, so there's room for a small kitchen inside, maybe.
I wonder if you can pitch the front porch lower for bad weather. It doesn't look like it. It would be nice to have different height settings. That's why I'm kind of a cobble-it-together with tarps guy.

I purchased this tent after watching this video. As it's on offer. Couple of this to note.
Yes 2 people can fit in it. But it's tight.if you make the inside a rectangle it's actually only 85cm deep. 140cm to the rear point.making it impossible to buy the right size mat or airbed for 2 people. To get the biggest possible tarp fully extended all the guide ropes and nail the pegs as far out as possible. Tightening the guide ropes makes the tarp foot print smaller inside.im guess Luke is about 5.2" because the tent looks much bigger in his video than it really is.quailty seems good tho

Can the TENT itself be moved to center of tarp instead of favoring one end ?

Or just buy a $50 mesh tent and a quality $100 tarp and some lightweight poles. Any mesh tent of your choosing and any tarp of choice, customised too for half the price.

At this point, it's really just for people who want an all in one system with a single purchase and that specific look. A good tarp will always be technically better and more versatile, but not necessarily as streamlined. To make it more worthwhile, they should have added multiple configurations of setting up the tarp, so for example, you could use it as a more domed and closer outer shell to have an extra layer of insulation around the tent, making it less open and more compact. In the end, all it really is, is a complex tarp that can only be setup in a specific way. They could have made the tarp more like how a hoodie has strings to tighten the hood. They could have designed it with the same principles, allowing you to tighten the tarp more around the tent with a pull string if you wanted that configuration, giving the possibility for a nice second layer around the tent, and could have also been utilized to make the tent easier to setup, since the pull string would allow you to not have to set it up so specifically, you could just tighten up any slack with the pull strings.

Luke and I have differing opinions about tenet occupancy capacity. I am guessing he assumes occupants, dog, and gear all processed through a woodchipper prior to camping? My general rule is divide the recommended occupancy by 2 and round down for actual use (a 1-person tent has an actual occupancy of 0).

Man I am a Japanese camping product fan. I been buying most of my gear from Amazon Japan and Japanese websites. My brother is a snowpeak fanatic .I know the Alpha breeze which he has you can stand in it but the footprint is rather small for my liking. I'm different I like to stand in my tents with room to take a couple of stepts in. So I buy Coleman Japanese tents which I have a few of. Its like on the level of snowpeak , totally different that what Coleman here in the USA offers. Hoping one day you can review Coleman Japan tents and gear.

I like free standing tents. Have three 3 season tents and one 4 season But I thought I’d have a look this tent. Wow you make very informative video. Well made and the tent probably a good one. But what if you’re late getting to your spot, it’s raining, windy and dark. It’s going to take 30 minutes to set up. Might as well go sleep in your car.

Hi Luke! This is a really fascinating tent concept! I have some questions, though. Is the front pole that holds the front of the tarp up a fixed length or can it be adjusted? It seems like if it were adjustable, you could lower it in really bad weather for extra protection from some wind and wind-blown rain. Do you think that would work? It would probably be necessary to re-adjust the guy-lines, but I think that would be a useful option. The only problem with this tent system is the inflated price.

Cool! Reminds me of the Moss Vista & Vista net with catenary cut. Even the colors are similar. I like that the inner becomes a full waterproof tent if needed, the Vista net has a removable floor but not that high for like eating etc. (Not as waterproof or bug proof as it is all netting on top, and the floor just clips in) Not sure I would want to bend down that much (and far) to get into the tent, but you could just use the other side to be more like other tents. Are both sides waterproof or is one door just water resistant? (I guess you could leave the tarp down if not. This might be tough in some campground, find space and a good space for inner part as well? I think SnowPeak does not have no-see-um netting which is a surprise on expensive tent, but has more ventilation light etc.
    Nice review.

I don't think saying Snow Peak is unknown in the U.S. is accurate. Their cookware and stoves are pretty ubiquitous premium products at retailers and online. It would be more appropriate to say anything else they make is relatively unknown.
