  • So you’ve gone through the whole Bend test process, and you’ve got your arrows fletched, now what? Take it outside and shoot it on a target at 20 yards. Compare what your bear shaft looks like to a fletched arrow and it will give you some indications on some very small adjustments to finish getting your tune almost perfect! Make sure you’re using a heavy foam target like the Matrix M1 so you are getting accurate feedback.

I would recommend shooting the bare shaft first so you don't hit the vanes on your other arrow.
Been doing this for a while now and I rarely have to do anything once I put broadheads on. Gets field points and BHs hitting together. If you do this method and the broadheads aren't hitting the same spot as field points, it could be a sign you don't have enough fletching for your broadheads. It was the case for me anyway.
Shooting bare shafts for practice is a great way to show your form flaws too

Thanks. Just put a new string on and starting this process in a day or two.
Loved that your shooting Elite too since I am as well and will get it close and then use SET to adjust.

Your slight difference in total arrow weight and stiffness between the fletched versus the bare shaft will end up with different tune for each arrow. It is recommended that you add a wrap, tape, or some form of weight to the back to equal the weight of your intended fletchings to make the arrows have the same weight distribution and stiffness when testing.

I’ve heard Pro’s argue both sides of this. At my skill level, I’m doubtful it matters much.

But, Mat, I don't understand. Those are corrections on the bow, not the arrow. Wouldn't it mess up the other arrows that are already set? (Clearly not bc I saw how the fletched arrow stuck to the target too, I just don't understand how).

I guess I’m not sure what you’re asking, but I’ll try to answer. Paper tuning is just a starting point. Don’t get too wrapped up in trying to get a “perfect” bullet hole because if you go shoot a bare shaft on a target, most likely, you’re going to need to make some adjustments. And that’s okay. In reality, after you’ve gone through the bare shaft tuning (and broadhead tuning if it’s a hunting bow) and then go back and shoot it through paper, it probably won’t be a perfect bullet hole anyway. But what it’s doing on the target at 20+ yards is much more important than what it’s doing through paper at 5 ft.

You dont target shoot or hunt with a bare shaft, why would you waste your time tuning in a manner thats not applicable. Build your arrow and tune your bow to the arrow you built for your bow accounting for proper grain per your draw poundage.

Bare shaft tuning has proven to be a very reliable way for me to set up my bows. Going through the process builds in forgiveness and consistency, especially when I screw on a broadhead.

@mat_in_texas just some constructive criticism, if it works for you keep doing it. I've never felt it to be a necessary step for my reasoning. I shoot alot, high speed and poundage out to 160 yards. Just a shooter givin my 2 cents, I do enjoy some of your other content. Keep gettin after it🤘🏼

@@dr.binjohnson7776 it’s all good, I’m always happy to learn new stuff. I by no means profess to be all knowing with this stuff. The cool part of UA-cam is that anybody can make a video. You put one together of your process and share it with us.

The fletching corrects the arrows flight. Thus, the more true your bare shaft flies, the more accurate your arrows will be with fletchings. This is exacerbated with a broadhead. Later you call your comment "constructive criticism." Mat is far kinder than I. Your comment was ignorant.
