I recently got a Master System and I have to say, the feel of the buttons on the controller is brilliant. They have a little more movement than, say, the buttons on a Mega Drive pad, but they feel really satisfying to press.
Hey Jimmy. I had done a review on Mortal Kombat for the SMS already. I've posted it as a video response to this video so you can see it. That's awesome about the Genesis controller with the turbo functions. I didn't know it was compatible with the SMS. Thanks.
i remember getting this one back in summer of 1987.sure it wasn't as famous as the Nintendo Nes (still have both of these) but it boasted better colors and sound. if Nintendo didn't control half of the market i bet this could have sold much better... i liked the fact that games also came on the sega cards which was a unique feature(for the time) the sega master system is underrated like the atari 7800 they really never got a chance.. i still have mine and play it to this day. the master system had some great games.
Did you say the built in sonic master system 2 was the more rare version john? as i purchased the sonic version of eBay with 6 other games for just £17 which i thought was an excellent deal, even more now if this version is the rarer version?
The SMS processor is actually the processor in the earlier model 1 Genesis/Mega Drive consoles, it's how the power base converter worked, it rerouted the game to run off the sound chip. Smart thinking.
just got a master system2 the other day with sonic on it and me and my daughter love it even though i have other more powerfull consoles haha! but my question is this apart from alex the kid amd sonic were there any other intergrated games for the ms2 as i have a dealer freind and he said he had one with road rash as the intergrated game? was this a one off or did sega just put in what was lying around or surplus at the time??
just like to make a couple commnets and a question or 3 my sms actually came with 2 built in games hang on and some shooting game safari hunt i beleive? anyways is this a normal thing? and also ive noticed sms2 is a rare find in the us (at least on ebay) could i buy one from another country or would i run in to issues using ntsc japan or pal?
I just bought a sega master system 2 with the in built sonic game for £2.00 GBP..It has the original boxing and packaging and is in very good condition.Did i get a bargain?.
I never owned one of these, but my friend owned the original version and we use to stay up all night playing Zillion! SMS was a great system and very under rated!
Road Rash on the Master System is astonishing to behold. The SMS was arguably Sega's most technically accomplished system; it could be pushed to do incredible things, whereas the NES could not be pushed anything like as far.
did you actually play the sms 1? one thing you failed to mention was the sms 1 had hang on and safari hunt built into them which you could play depending on which button you pressed on the sega logo screen. but there was also a maze game built in. you had to know the button combination to play it. i always forgot what to hold. so 3 games built in? you dont get that kind of service nowdays.
The SMS had a peculiar period of popularity here in the UK. Generally, our interest in consoles only took off at the time of the 16-bits. Before that, us UK 80's kids were more into computer systems such as the C64, mainly due to the very low cost of software. The SMS1 was advertised heavily but, despite it's cool image, sales never really took off. But the launch of the MegaDrive created a brief but huge surge in uptake of the SMS2. It was seen as an affordable way to enter into the Sega arena.
There are a million things I could say about this system, but I'll speak for myself and hopefully many others who owned it back in its "glory days". I loved then and still love it now. Sure Nintendo had the market cornered but that didn't stop Sega from creating a system that, even today, some of us still play and talk about... And yes, the challenge IS still there! - Sega fanboy for life!
Sill have my Model 1 console& a handful of games! Not sure if it still plays, tho. Was the built-in version of Sonic the Hedgehog in a Master System Model 3? Or was it just Model 2 w/Sonic built-in? .. BTW, John, do you happen to have the Chapolim x Dracula game? It's supposed to be very rare because it was only in Brazil.
I just got a Sega Master System 1 at the Salvation Army after years of looking for one. I got it along with a Genesis Model 1 and an 8 track case filled with 35 Atari 2600 games for 25 dollars. It was one of my better finds in quite some time, and I absolutely love my Master System.
Really good and underrated system (as he mentioned), had it had a lot of great classic games that you should show sometime! I'm surprised at how well Sonic looked on the Master system, and I do realize it came out in 91, but even NES had games still coming out in the 90s, and they didn't look or play nearly as good as Sonic
Mini tripod for any digital camera, 10 bucks. Not having to set the entire weight of a Master System onto your vintage cart, priceless. But seriously, keep up the reviews, informative and fun.
@HolyNoob98: I'm 32 years old, my dad bought the Sega Master System when I was like about 7 or 8 years old. Action Fighter and Space Harrier are my 2 favorite Sega Master System video games.
i just love the shape, colour and the little diagram on the sms..it looks so 80's futuristic...my friend used to lend me his with psycho fox and outrun and i thought it was great..recently found a master system 2 and loads of games left outside a house that was being renovated and the guy painting outside said it was cool to take em.it got a budget re-design to help keep sales going alongside the megadrive i think. I really want a sms 1 though even if just to have on display.
Great video.I still have the model 1 SMS and i usually play with this more than the PS2 and the Dreamcast. One thing that you forgot is that when it first came out,it had a built in game that was actually a maze game.Man what did you remind me.When i brought it from Canada to Greece in 1988,no one ever heard about it untill it came in 1990 and a year later came the Mega Drive.
Nice little overview. There are multiple versions of the first model you showed with varying built in games. The av out being the same as the Commodore 64 doesn't surprise me. It's got the same controller plugs as an Atari 2600/7800. It was built out of standard parts to reduce cost.
I love my SMS, I have had it since I was a kid, and I actually own a working phaser gun and 3-D goggles. They give you quite a headache after wearing them for a while and are a pain to keep on your nose, but it's nice at the fact that the game can be played in both 2-D & 3-D. Also, whoever mentioned it, Safari Hunt wasn't the only game that used the gun, I have the system at my parents atm so I can't look, but I did have a different game that used the gun.
This was a great system in its day. In the UK it was very popular and had a large share in the rental market, right up until around 1995. I'd say it was more competetive in europe than in other markets due to the early success of the mega drive, which was outselling the SNES, and the fact it was also a lot cheaper than in the states. Later versions of the Master System II had Sonic 1 or Alex Kidd actually built in to the system, and would boot when a cartridge wasn't in the slot.
@CYLLICYBIN: I had the SMS1 back in the day and the version I got, which obviously was prior to yours, didn't have the games Hang on/Safari Hunt built in, but were rather included as a cartridge in the system bundle.
Nice review. Is this system worth getting. I found one at a local store for about 40 dollars. What if I have a Atari 7800 already. Also have all the other sega systems except for this and the GameGear.
the original MS had built in games as well you got hang on on both versions and if you bought the gun pack you also got a shooting game which i cannot remember the name of, i have both MS ones
So dragon Warrior 1-4 and final fantasy 1-3 just dont count in your mind? Also there were quite a few other RPGs and Action adventure games like Zelda on the NES, but yeah, on the SNES there were way more
this was the first videogame console i have ever played and it would be really awesome to get my hands on one of these someday to pay homage to my "baptism" for video games. i assume they are quite rare though
It sold VERY well in Australia, EVERYBODY i know had one! it was a novelty to see an NES down here in the early years, then of course after Mario 2 especially, everyone wanted that!!
to get that maze game, if i remember correctly when u switch the system on and the sega logo comes up, hold up on the directional pad plus both buttons at the same time and the maze should start........
if you let the annotion function on (i don't know if you call it that way, because mine is in german..) you can see that he corrects himself by mentioning that..
Yes SMS came out in 1986, TG-16 came out in 1989. Why the SMS has card slot, here's my theory, NEC made the central CPU for the SMS so maybe they were originally behind the card game idea and just took it for their own system afterwards.
It is true that here in Australia the Master system did very well indeed as far as I know, but I didn't even own one when they were in their prime. I don't know how well it did compaired to the NES, but I think it did quite well, certainly the Master System II did well enough.
The model 1 had different games built into it too. Mine has Hang On, and a snail maze game. There was a light gun package where the console had both Hang On and Duck Hunt built in. One neat feature of the model 1 is that it will play PAL games as well as NTSC. It also has no regional lock-out, so you can play all of those games that came out in Europe and Brazil. It has trouble with some of the PAL 3-D games though. STAY AWESOME! :)
Good stuff. Well done noting it's success in Europe as well, as almost everyone I knew had a Master System when I was little. If someone had a NES it was a rarity and something to go "ooh look at that, it has a pushy flippy thing" at. Love these rare review things. Consider yourself subscribed!
I see a lot of people that call this underrated but it was only underrated in the US. Nintendo was big in the US and the Master System didn't have anywhere near as many games there. It's a shame because I really think they missed out.
@4TCRONAN I asked several people this question and got mixed answers, so I found Mortal Kombat cheap from the U.K. on e-bay and bought it. I will be damn it does work and plays flawlessly! From what I found out the only thing the master system won't play and that is games from Japan, unless you have a Japan model. Thanks for answering me.
I personally can't say for sure on this one, but if you notice, a lot of systems back in the day had expansion ports that were never utilized for whatever reason. It's always sort of sad to see that...makes me imagine what the possibilities could have been. :/
Man Phantasy Star was so freaking epic back in the day. I got in on the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection and it was just as good, if not better, as RPG's today. Man... good old times...
I am from the UK and The Master System was to us what the NES was to America (at least from a console perspective, we were more into ZX Spectrums and C64's) Believe it or not at the end of 1993 the Master System's user base was bigger than the Mega Drive's in Europe
That original Master System also has a built-in game - "Snail Maze" (not sure of the title). It can accessed by pressing the d-pad in various directions while simultaneously pressing button I and then button II during the boot-up "SEGA Logo" screen when no cartridges were inserted. Other than the poor placement of the pause button, I found the Master System to be superior to the Famicom/NES in every way possible.
Dude I never played a real master system in those days myself and friends had NES. I agree the games on the master system were cooler than Nintendo but when NES had a Saturday morning cartoon and breakfast cereal that tasted like crap sega didn't stand a chance. Glad to be a kid of that generation enjoyed the video thanks bro!
What does it mean when they say Nintendo had control of 96% of the market?? I know the easy answer is it means nes could make more games than the competition but WHY were they able to??
Agreed, no denying NES was a game changing system and yeah, I'm not into RPG's. Thanks for the nice reply, been getting into heated nonsense with people lately, but I'm no angel either.
@jamak42 As far as I know, the Snail Maze game was an easter egg game built in to all SMS versions. You hold down the two controller buttons and press UP, as I recall.
I was never a fan of the SMS. Played it at friends' ,I guess the games I played weren't to my liking. Your Mortal Kombat vid really showed me how powerful this can be.Thanks for the knowledge.
You forgot to mention the hidden game in the master system. It was like a maze game or something. I think you had to start it without a game installed and press a button. Not sure. that was like 23 years ago.
I've always felt that the Sega Master System was little more than a slightly upgraded Colecovision. That's not to knock it in any way -- this was much of the same basic hardware that powered many arcade machines back in the day.
Ugh, that pause button. Seeing that brought back some annoying childhood memories of accidentally hitting reset instead of pause when playing in a poorly lit room. What sadistic bastard thought that it would be a good idea to have pause and reset buttons right next to each other? Other than that, I loved the master system though. What really stood out for me as a kid was how much more colorful the graphics were over the NES.
I forgot to say I was a Sega fan, I was also like 5 when my mom got it for my family, so I would have liked NES if that was the system we got! Well graphically speaking it is definitely better.
I had both Master Systems (3 is sold in South America I think only) - this is the first time I see that small card size game though... I always wondered what they looked like since I had only regular cartridges for it. Also, I had a light gun for it and Gangster Town for it!
Still boggles my mind that the pause button is on the console itself. Sega never fixed that in later versions of the console? I realize Nintendo had some dirty licensing tactics that shut out competition, including Sega, but it's not like Sega didn't dig its own grave in some ways with the Master System. Genesis/Megadrive is what broke the mold for them in terms of success.
It definitely had better graphics, but the SMS had inferior sound. I agree that proper third party support could have made it a really successful system though.
I have 1 MasterSystem and 2 of the Second model :) Such awesome systems , but didn't have many big companies making games for them , but that's where homebrew comes in :D
Thanks for the compliment and for watching.
This is Whispers81.
+Nick Rodriguez I laugh at this comment every time I see it.
Sure. I did a review over the Treamcast that you might enjoy watching too. Thanks for the request.
Cool, thanks for watching.
Wow that's awesome. Hopefully you can find it somewhere.
I recently got a Master System and I have to say, the feel of the buttons on the controller is brilliant. They have a little more movement than, say, the buttons on a Mega Drive pad, but they feel really satisfying to press.
I have looked for Mortal Kombat for a while all I can find is the PAL version, did they make a NTSC version? or will PAL work in a NTSC console?
Underneath the original sms there was a connector/expansion slot. Did anything ever get released to connect to that either USA side or otherwise?
Yeah it is Mortal Kombat. I'm not sure why it's white. I think it was a later release.
Hey Jimmy. I had done a review on Mortal Kombat for the SMS already. I've posted it as a video response to this video so you can see it.
That's awesome about the Genesis controller with the turbo functions. I didn't know it was compatible with the SMS. Thanks.

Hello , i dont have an RF SWITCH for my sms 2 so if i buy an NES RF SWITCH is this work for my sms or not ? Please answer .
i remember getting this one back in summer of 1987.sure it wasn't as famous as the Nintendo Nes (still have both of these) but it boasted better colors and sound. if Nintendo didn't control half of the market i bet this could have sold much better...

Yeah the NES was a better system do to all of the great third party support, but the SMS is a much more powerful system overall.
why is the cart sticker white? i
noticed "arena" on the sticker. is it mortal kombat?
Good review, man. Thank you. I like the tip about the Genesis controller
Is that DIN plug for A/V out the same as the A/V out on the Genesis Model 1?
Did you say the built in sonic master system 2 was the more rare version john? as i purchased the sonic version of eBay with 6 other games for just £17 which i thought was an excellent deal, even more now if this version is the rarer version?
ok but i dont know how to Replace that RF in SMS 2 ?
Nice video!
I got a litle question: Do you know what power supply the master system 2 uses? You see, I just bought it without the AC adapter.
The SMS processor is actually the processor in the earlier model 1 Genesis/Mega Drive consoles, it's how the power base converter worked, it rerouted the game to run off the sound chip. Smart thinking.
just got a master system2 the other day with sonic on it and me and my daughter love it even though i have other more powerfull consoles haha!
but my question is this apart from alex the kid amd sonic were there any other intergrated games for the ms2 as i have a dealer freind and he said he had one with road rash as the intergrated game? was this a one off or did sega just put in what was lying around or surplus at the time??
i owned one once that had hang on built into ram did they all have this?
just like to make a couple commnets and a question or 3 my sms actually came with 2 built in games hang on and some shooting game safari hunt i beleive? anyways is this a normal thing? and also ive noticed sms2 is a rare find in the us (at least on ebay) could i buy one from another country or would i run in to issues using ntsc japan or pal?
Does the Led turn on without a cartdridge?
I just bought a sega master system 2 with the in built sonic game for £2.00 GBP..It has the original boxing and packaging and is in very good condition.Did i get a bargain?.
@gkyy3c if you're talking about the let on the SMS1 yes it turns on and actually plays a game that is in the internal memory of the system.
do you know about the hidden game; snail trail on the sega master system 2???
Stupid question witch one is better master system 1 or 2 in general?
I never owned one of these, but my friend owned the original version and we use to stay up all night playing Zillion! SMS was a great system and very under rated!
Road Rash on the Master System is astonishing to behold. The SMS was arguably Sega's most technically accomplished system; it could be pushed to do incredible things, whereas the NES could not be pushed anything like as far.

This I explains a lot because I live in the U.S and don't recall EVER seeing a Sega Master System Commercial.

2: Now in HQ!

Yeah you had to hold down A and B buttons i think before you turn it on to acces that, otherwise it went to Hang-on
LOL. You're so right! She wouldn't be happy if I kept her up. =)
this was the first videogame console i have ever played and it would be really awesome to get my hands on one of these someday to pay homage to my "baptism" for video games. i assume they are quite rare though
forgot to mention it was the Sonic installed version, never knew they were rare. Wonder what happened to it?
It sold VERY well in Australia, EVERYBODY i know had one!
it was a novelty to see an NES down here in the early years, then of course after Mario 2 especially, everyone wanted that!!
to get that maze game, if i remember correctly when u switch the system on and the sega logo comes up, hold up on the directional pad plus both buttons at the same time and the maze should start........
BTW, wasn't SMS before turbografx? If so, turbografx ripped off SMS.
I do believe the master system came out before the pc engine.
if you let the annotion function on (i don't know if you call it that way, because mine is in german..) you can see that he corrects himself by mentioning that..
Yes SMS came out in 1986, TG-16 came out in 1989. Why the SMS has card slot, here's my theory, NEC made the central CPU for the SMS so maybe they were originally behind the card game idea and just took it for their own system afterwards.
My god brothers were the only people I ever saw with the Sega master system, they had one in the mid and another one in the early 90's.
It is true that here in Australia the Master system did very well indeed as far as I know, but I didn't even own one when they were in their prime. I don't know how well it did compaired to the NES, but I think it did quite well, certainly the Master System II did well enough.

I'm sure the master system is slightly older than turbo grafx 16 so it couldn't have ripped off the card feature from it
I see a lot of people that call this underrated but it was only underrated in the US. Nintendo was big in the US and the Master System didn't have anywhere near as many games there. It's a shame because I really think they missed out.

didnt sell that much mainly cause of the price compared to a brand new NES for 80 bux with 2 controllers a zapper a rob robot and mario/duck hunt
was refering to the big one (master system 1) if anyone wondered
I personally can't say for sure on this one, but if you notice, a lot of systems back in the day had expansion ports that were never utilized for whatever reason. It's always sort of sad to see that...makes me imagine what the possibilities could have been. :/
Man Phantasy Star was so freaking epic back in the day. I got in on the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection and it was just as good, if not better, as RPG's today. Man... good old times...
Why did Japan sell the 1987 US Sega Master System I ???
shoulda talked about the power base converter for the Genesis as well. :)The power base converter could do the 3D glasses as well if I'm not mistaken.
I am from the UK and The Master System was to us what the NES was to America (at least from a console perspective, we were more into ZX Spectrums and C64's)
Believe it or not at the end of 1993 the Master System's user base was bigger than the Mega Drive's in Europe

What does it mean when they say Nintendo had control of 96% of the market?? I know the easy answer is it means nes could make more games than the competition but WHY were they able to??
I love all these retro consoles! im gonna get this and a vectrex and a NES top loader.Cant wait!
Got a Master System II with Sonic 1 built-in. Came with a controller, and 4 more games all for £5. Good deal methinks.
Mine never went to Hang-On, it would always come up with the maze if you didn't insert a cart.
@Naomi0111 Yeah great deal.
Agreed, no denying NES was a game changing system and yeah, I'm not into RPG's. Thanks for the nice reply, been getting into heated nonsense with people lately, but I'm no angel either.

sorry for the nitpicking, but it kinda sounded like you said "genis" controller a couple times. Anyway, keep up the great work!
@RetroGamerVX Actually my wife was asleep in the other room next store. lol
Best 8-bit console imo. This and the Game Gear never get enough credit.
I should have researched as I thought they were close to the same release date.
It definitely had better graphics, but the SMS had inferior sound. I agree that proper third party support could have made it a really successful system though.
I have 1 MasterSystem and 2 of the Second model :)
Such awesome systems , but didn't have many big companies making games for them , but that's where homebrew comes in :D
LOL Bob Ross huh? Anyways $25 is a good price for a SMS for sure. Good luck winning it.
I love how in this video you talk as if there is somebody asleep next to you :o)
sega master system with nintendo enterteinment system were my first video game consoles...
