    I was lucky enough to recently get my hands on an FZ-1. Got a couple games with it and I love the thing. Awesome console...

    Your videos never fail to amaze me. Its always cool to know that there's people out there that can get into talking about consoles and gaming as much as I like to. A+ dude, your honestly one of the biggest reasons I started uploading vids. I actually own the Goldstar and the FZ-10 but I need to purchase the accessories.

    FZ-1 FTW! Wing Commander 3. Return Fire, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Samurai Shodown, Road Rash, The expansion was going to be for VCDs and MPEG video.

    Great review. I love the 3DO. I really enjoy Road Rash, Crash n Burn, Return Fire and Guardian War myself.
    When I did some research for my review, I couldn't find any information on any expansions either, but a few people informed me that were indeed expansions. I still can't find any info on them, though.

    I have played just about every game console ever released in the US and the 3DO was one of THE BEST ones for the quality of games and fun factor. From Road Rash to Road and Track's The Need for Speed and Star Control II and Wing Commander III etc. etc.I remember how it blew away EVERYONE including me when I purchased it at the discounted $499. I remember the main reason of it's failure is its hefty PRICE which is why the PlayStation 3 was almost a flop if Sony hadn't thrown so much money at it. Many market players learned long ago (especially Nintendo) that $199 is the sweet spot and $299 is the max price for a gaming console and that any more then it may not sell enough.

    @robhova Yeah Slam Jam is a great game. Wasn't that kinda a 3Dish style of play? Kinda like NCAA Basketball for the SNES?

    the panasonic 3do model looks awesome and was far ahead of it's time.. if only the price would have been reasonable. 32 bit was at the time of the 3do release very new and expensive and this was super high tech. nice to have one nowadays in your collection since there are some good games for it

    I got an FZ1 in 94. In the UK it was very hard to find 3d0 stuff and marketing was pretty much non-existent. As far as im aware no major retailers stocked it or the games. I got a local tv retailer to order one for me after seeing it in an early Edge magazine. I think it cost about £650. I Also got an infrared controller set, which was nice. Games like road rash made all the other consoles look prehistoric in comparison and the demo disk had a batman cartoon that looked amazing compared to the grainy cinepak video on the mega cd. The best bit of all is that although it cost a lot, its still working perfectly after 20 years of use, pulling cd playing duties (with the awesome fractal light synthesiser thingy being projected onto a 12ft screen via a led projector). Great machine thats built like a tank.

    I loved Twisted, I really wish they would have ported the game onto a newer system, but I heard it wasn't well received. If I get the system, that's the only game I plan to get

    The daisy-chain feature on the controllers was AWESOME!! The other game console makers could have learned from that. Since you kept linking to each additional controller, there was no need to be repugnant devices like multi-tap adapters.

  • @KyleMoore1
    @KyleMoore1 14 років тому

    Funny story - I used to play the Road Rash demo that was on some demo CD that I had. It was set on a timer that would just reset to the main screen after a certain amount of time, so I must have played the same 2 minute stretch of the game 50 times anticipating getting the game for Christmas. I snuck and opened the gift early, replacing the CD with another and rewrapping it, just to find that the full version of the game reset at the same point. I was devastated.

    Now you've got me into the 3DO! I remember when it was displayed in a Panasonic showroom many years ago, and I tried a F-Zero type game, can't recall the title, but it was so freaking amazing. I knew my dad won't let me have it as I was already having difficulty trying to convince him to get me a Super Famicom.. Lol. Great vid John!

    The side expansion port could house a VideoCD adapter or a memory upgrade and was originally going to be used to add an M2 upgrade board. (to make upgrading to an M2 cheaper).
    The upgrade path was cancelled shortly before the M2.
    AFAIK, the VideoCD adapter was only available in Japan.v

    I'm so mad, my 3DO doesn't read disks. The lens won't move, it's stuck in place, and I'm not about to drop the ebay asking price on a new one.

      If you still have the console then you are a prime candidate for a USB mod. Imagine having over 300 games in alphabetical order when you turn the 3DO on. Games also load 10x faster. PM me if you need a link to the mod.

    I had an FZ1, and for the time, it was fantastic. The games were created by less known companies, but I appreciated the uniqueness of their individual features. The sampler CDs were great, featuring around 8 or 10 games on a CD. I had Road Rash, Samurai Shodown, Quarantine, Links Golf, and a few sampler discs, and it was more than enough. Find it and buy it!

    So, which of the 3 controllers is the most comfortable-mainly in terms of the directional pad? I would think the "top-loader" would be more durable because you don't have a tray motor that can break.

    Great coverage! I had a controller once and the cord on it was about FIFTEEN feet long! I wonder how big the TV had to be to really justify such a controller (or the idea of it, anyway). Crazy long cable!

    I remember when these first game out... I was 12, and I really really really wanted one! They cost so much.. I wanted to play The Need For Speed.. it was one of the best driving games at the time. 17 years later... I suppose I can afford one now. I remember the graphics were awesome, the sound was awesome, and the design of the console looked awesome. It's so strange that I could just buy one so cheap on ebay now! Thanks a lot for this video, it was cool :) I remember the controller so well.

    I just recently picked up a Goldstar 3DO for $5, bought a brand new in the box FZ-JP1X controller for $9.99 and I am loving it! $700 worth of fun for $15. The 3DO really does have quite a few good games. If you find a system for cheap I highly recommend getting one. Also the 3DO has no copy protection so you it will play all of you backup games with no problem!

    @TheEscapedBalloon There was a product planning reason for that. "3DO" was going to be a standard for multimedia entertainment, much like "VHS" is a standard.
    It took several tries and many unsuccessful products for companies to learn that "edutainment" does not sell hardware, but games do.

  • @mariosonic190

    The 3DO is a great system. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Gex, Road Rash and Need for Speed are my favourite games on the system.
    I think if the system launched at a cheaper price, had more 3rd party support, and had more controller ports, it could of done very well. Great vid, as always. :)

  • @mp4podcastDOTcom
    @mp4podcastDOTcom 14 років тому

    I think the port on the back of the Panasonic was to be a add on device so the Panasonic would play CDi and VCD movies. I heard CDi and VCD are the same thing.
    Goldstar Released a CDi or VCD add on for 199 dollars. And it came with a copy of Total Recall with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
    There is a Total Recall show from the 90's you can watch it on HULU dot COM. But its from the point of view of a Blade Runner. Blader Runner and Total Recall are in the same universe.

  • @WonderCreationStudios

    Yeah, it did flop, but in my opinion it was the best of the ones that royally flopped. IE, compared to the Sega CD, 32x, Atari's Jaguar, Philips CD-i, Sega Saturn. It did have a few good games. I still have my 3DO after all these years and out of all the systems that I've gotten rid of over the years, I can't get rid of my 3DO.

    I really like the 3do too. A lot of people don't know that a lot of early Saturn and Ps1 games are ports from the 3do. I personally like the FZ10. I preffer the flip tops to slide out trays. One less thing to break.
    I'd also recommend the game Lucienne's Quest, it's a pretty sweet RPG.

I was into the floyd and other 60s-70s bands and recreational medicinal herbs. I ended up giving it to a soon-to-be-after ex. That mortal kombat clone that took brutality over the top was so hard to play thanks to the controllers, as I previously mentioned ;(

    gamestar i have a question im hoping u can help me out with, im 35 and i remember as a kid playing resident evil on 3d0 before playstation ever came out. i use to rent it with road rash in the long boxes. i remember telling people how good the game was and then a year or 2 later ps1 came out and re came out and sales went through the roof on ps and i thought it never got its fair credit on 3d0. ive looked everywhere online and cannot find anywhere showing it on 3d0 or any1 having a copy but im almost 100% sure i played it on 3d0 because i rented the system and the games at the same time. have u ever seen or heard of it on 3d0? im guessing its extremely rare

      I would pay a king's ransom for a copy of Resident Evil on 3DO.. sadly, I think you may be thinking of the PS1 version. I had both systems back in the day and spent $3000 on 3DO games. I never once seen or heard of Resident Evil on 3DO. Was a long time ago and thinking maybe you are still thinking of the PS1 version.

    I find that most of the good games on the 3do (like GEX and Road Rash) are also available on the PS1 and Saturn. Still, it does have a couple good exclusives. Still worth picking one up in my mind. Also, if you like FMV games, this is the system to get for sure.

    One nice thing about the 3DO is that the games don't have any copy protection. So if can find the roms online (pretty easy) you can just burn them to a CD.
    Road Rash is great... and so is Return Fire!

  • @Wallcrawler
    @Wallcrawler 12 років тому

    So you did do a review on the 3DO my apologies.
    Ahh 3DO, possessing two video co-precessors outputs 16 million pixels per second, Enables use of Dolby Digital surround sound and head phone jack, could play Video CD's which was the pre-cursor to DVD's, the expansion bay was your memory card slot (things was huge!) and it has one of the best port of Street Fighter 2 X for technical reasons. Gex was decent, Samsho, Crash N Burn, and that Korean fighter made by SNK was solid. 3DO is special 2 me.

    It's different than the PS1, but came out around the same time, just a little bit before. I feel that the graphics are better and run smoother than the PS1, but the PS1 had better games.
