Ridiculous. Very sad.

@@handsomebuddhaa the cops were chasing them because they robbed the LCBO
@@handsomebuddhaaThey robbed the liquor store...
The police that pursued should be fired. A high speed car chase down the 401 going the wrong way for an LCBO robbery? Especially with no one being hurt during the initial robery, this was a terrible call. I don't wish the police got hurt, but the fact that they walked away from this mistake they made, but grandparents and an infant died is just disgusting. The police should be charged.
Police chasing in the wrong direction on the busiest highways is a fatal mistake.
Robbing a liquor store and running in a stolen car is a fatal mistake. 100% of the blame is on the suspect.
chasing someone on the on coming highway is like trying to get closer to someone holding a hostage. They could’ve done a roadblock, checkpoint or let him go with his booze and use face ID in these stores to investigate his activity
I agree: such a chase can only be justified to prevent an imminent threat to someone's life (for example: if some whacko mounted a .50 cal on the roof and started randomly spraying). We don't know the full picture, but so far it seems like a gross overreaction on part of the police.
@@trevor2719 if the cops didn't chase, there would not have been a high speed chase.... cops were 100% wrong. Don't understand how you can think otherwise.

@Dr_Monster That's not what this person is saying. Of course it's the criminals fault. But perhaps in the future they should consider calling of such a pursuit if it has the potential to have such a devastating effect on innocent lives. Because they're breaking the law
Regardless of the initial start of this, police have to attempt to stop a wrong way vehicle on the highway. Their emergency lights and sirens garner more attention then Joe Public's headlights (if any depending on time of day and lighting conditions). So police would *still* have been there, trying to correct the situation. One witness in other footage even notes "I saw the emergency lights, then saw this van speed by me going the wrong way". He didn't distinguish the van, but knew something was up because of the police presence.
So from your comfy chair at home, what would your opinion be if there were *no police involved* at all, and the same deaths occurred? 100% you'd then say "well where the police??? They're supposed to stop these maniacs and keep the public safe!".

(Yes, there are just so many of you wrong on this, I've turned my reply into a form letter).

The police should have called off the chase. The perpetrator could still have continued the wrong way at high speed and crashed but more options would have been open which would reduce the possibility of crashing, like slowing down or using the shoulder. Police could have covered highway exits instead. Maybe the police in this chase thought they would save lives by chasing the vehicle down and that would allow for an opportunity to perform a pit maneuver like they do in Arkansas all the time. It would be nice to read the radio transcript. All in all, policy change and training needs to happen to prevent this and similar events taking of lives on the highway in the future for such petty theft events.

It's truly heartbreaking to hear about the devastating outcome of this police pursuit. The loss of innocent lives, including that of an infant and their grandparents, is an unimaginable tragedy that could have been avoided. Pursuing a suspect into a high-speed chase on a busy highway, especially when it's beyond the jurisdiction of the local police, seems reckless and unnecessary.
In situations like this, where public safety is paramount, it's essential for law enforcement to consider alternative methods of apprehension. Calling for support from the OPP or utilizing police helicopters could have been safer options to prevent such a catastrophic event. Sadly, the decision to engage in a pursuit led to irreversible consequences.
This incident underscores the importance of reevaluating pursuit policies and emphasizing the safety of innocent bystanders above all else. My heart goes out to the families affected by this tragedy, and I hope that lessons will be learned to prevent similar incidents in the future.
