I remember watching this video like a year or so ago. I’ve always been trying to discipline myself, but I tried to do so many at a time, I never thought to only take on one task until it’s second nature to me like this video thought me. Now I have money in the bank for a rainy day. I get more out of my day. This video really was a stepping stone to where I’m still heading for in life today.

    See, this was my problem.
I tried to change everything all at once, and when I couldn't, guilt would take over me. If I wasn't perfect in everything, if I didn't study hard enough, if I didn't work out that day, then I would throw myself into a panic attack and convince myself it was the end of the world.
Overcoming perfectionism is the first step, then habits.

Crazy how this story is what actually happened to me. I lost my mom, leaving my older sister and I to figure out life on our own. I HAD to adapt to a routine that would be self disciplinary; so then it’ll keep me on the right tack towards success. A lot of temptations hit me everyday but I alternate it with going to the gym. Currently in my first semester of college and dedicating my education and career to my mother 🙏🏽. This video was the first thing I seen on my recommended and tapped in. What I learned from this video :
    1. Find your own why: To discipline yourself first you must find yourself a strong "why".
    2. Focus on singular activities: If you want to improve your discipline, you must focus on one task only, and once it became a habit you can direct your willpower onto another.
    3. Pre-planning for temptation: This will help you to avoid you having to exercise willpower to resist the temptation.

He did have a choice to cook or not cook to his sister. He did have a choice of how much effort to put into studies and weather to continue them at all.
I don't think it matters if he had choice in the beginning. I think the point is largely that having to force himself to go to work every day, no matter if he had real choice or not, helped him become more self disciplined, which then helped him in his later endeavors. Even if it looks like he had no choice, he still had to battle his old habits, tiredness, etc.

I did something similar to this. I had a strong reason, help my mom, and the singular activity was clean the kitchen everyday after school. Now doing dishes, bacum, and making sure everything is clean is something I do every day when I get home from school.
It's nice since I'm not forcing myself to do it, I just do it because I'm used to it.

I can relate to the strong motivation. In high School I was at a 2.7 GPA going into my Junior year. One night, about midway through Junior year, my dad came out of his room drenched in sweat and looking very very sick during a family party. I knew he was showing signs of a heart attack because coincidentally, I had hung-out with a friend of mine who's dad was recovering from one. I had to beg my family to take him to the hospital and he indeed had a heart attack while at the ER. The morning after he told me I had saved his life. If he hadn't gone in he would've passed away.
I can't describe to you guys how I felt that night or the nights following on how I could stoop so low with my education and be so bad at life. I was smart but I was being dragged down by girls, the friends I surrounded myself with, and to some extent partying but above all it was my doing. I was lazy, had no motivation, etc etc. All these realizations came as a result of losing the one man who saw more in me than anyone else.
The rest of that year I did everything with a chip on my shoulder. I refused to be average or to have no chance at going to college. From Junior year to the end of senior year, I didn't fall below a 4.0 and I retook enough classes that my GPA went up to a 3.6 by the time college applications came around. There was plenty of crying, plenty of "I cant solve this problem" because I never tried in my life but all it took was discipline and the drive to keep going. I got into a few schools, and now I'm going into my second year as a Mechanical Engineering Major.
Discipline is everything. I still have my fall-outs in school but each time its a learning lesson rather than something I didn't put enough effort into. Invest in yourself, discipline yourself, set goals and you won't believe how quickly things will turn around.
These past two years have been some of the best of my life and it all came from one of the worst time periods of my life.

      @@briandiehl9257 Hello!
At the moment, I have a planner where I schedule out my tomorrows neatly. In order to keep myself accountable and motivated, I use the bullet journal method in crossing out finished tasks. I lay out my plan for the next day each night. I also mentally prepare myself for tomorrow before I go to bed. There are still days where I can't get myself to get up and do as I planned, but I can see improvements in my vices and virtues. I am more conscious of my thoughts and my body; I meditate more regularly. I made it a point to exercise through my own volition. It is really unfortunate that I am unable to do what used to come easy to me; flexibility for example. It has been difficult to accept that I'm not as fit as I used to be because it has been months since my last serious training. I am far from prime fitness, but I am determined to continue the accumulation of good habits and eliminate bad habits.
Today I chose to take care of my mind and body.

I guess it's pretty much about prioritizing. What do you think will matter more in the future? Being seen as cool and nonchalant right now or having a more secure road to an accomplished life now and in the future? Which sounds better?
When you say your 'dude state' is simply uncontrollable, then it really will be uncontrollable. The thing is, it's not 'uncontrollable' if you don't let it. You can't control most things in your life, but luckily what you can control is *yourself*.

This is actually better than all self-discipline tips I've ever watched. It was always "have this schedule", "make a to-do list", "have this on your list" it's just so.....lengthy and feels like a waste of time. Except this one is "make one activity a habit before you move on to another"!!!! This speaks volumes why didn't I ever think of that? it's genius! completely simple but powerful!! Thank you so much for this! Have a great day everyone!

interesting thing is that I've started doing that for a couple of weeks now (I hadn't watched this video then). It began with refusing to get help from close members of family. I have started doing part time jobs to be able to afford food. now I'm focused on learning how to cook and also how to eat healthy. The hardest part is how not to succumb to old habits. cause family is always there to offer help and friends are there to pressure you back to the old you. I think this video would be of some help about that problem.

Remembering that motivation is finite and "spending" it in a singular focus on an activity, specifically to develop a habit, and anticipating, then planning ahead to create automated decisions and protocols, instead of reacting, has such a great effect on willpower and mental calm in spite of multiple seemingly urgent voices crying for our attention but actually distracting us and dragging us back down. Protecting the growth. Brilliant.

as the oldest sister I have to take care of my little brothers 6 and 8 years old, my mom works as a secretary and sometimes her health worries me. she overthinks and it doesn't help with her blood pressure. she is 42 but who knows what could happen. Also the father of my brother is in jail so,
If my mom dies Im gonna be the tutor of my brothers.
PLUS I'm already a mom 4years old. I'm studying human resources thanks to my mom. that means I have to take care of 3 children at the same time and in comparison with Lucas her sister wasn't a little kid.
So yeah, whenever procastination or depression hits ... I think of all this and then I act.

Ranganath Vaikuntham yeah Ikr, well my mom had me at the age of 18 and I at 19 (but in my case I already had a work and graduated from high school) but both grandparents of my mom died when she was 14 so that explains a lot, also I was raised by my dad and my grandma since my mom was not mentally capable to take that responsibility, what I mean with all this is there are more hard realities than the example of the video. which is a great example and pretty common, I'm not trolling or anything just sharing my experience and yes, you can get through. just need a strong Will. do the things even if you don't feel like it. that makes the difference.
There are other stories that are tougher than mine way more ! so yes, you can get through anything there are no rules to this life.

This video breaks down the seemingly impenetrable barriers that I have found myself breaking down in recent years. Good habits building on top of each other have helped me turn my life around.
I'm waiting and working with my goals in mind. The important ones have not happened yet but I am becoming the right person for them when they do ronnie-writes.blogspot.com/2018/01/apply-develop-win-jobs.html

MaNuLaToR'S MiXeS Cool. I made a plan last year and although it isn't happening overnight, which nothing ever does, it is happening. Slowly, but sure enough. I am a writer, musician and a producer.
I am doing similar to what U are. My ultimate goal is making films/movies. My advice is NEVER forget your dreams or plans. Don't worry about other's being negative towards U. Forget the haters. Stick to your plan and stay positive no matter what. There are people that care about you and there are people out there that will love U. Stick with it and NEVER GIVE UP! U will be and do fine! Spread the Love!

    Cliff Notes:
    1. Have a strong compelling reason why
    2. Develop discipline through singular activities (it's like a muscle)
    3. Pre-plan for temptation

3 Years after watching this video and I still haven't changed, every time I say "this time will be different, I can start balancing multiple things at the same time" and every time I just fail and say the same thing again. Now I gave up and will start with just one thing at a time.

I suffer from borderline personality disorder, and because of my emotional breakdowns, I usually begin to feel an overwhelming anxiety and stress, out of normal ranges that used to make me a less disciplined person, so I have been fucking things up for months now. I now understand that if I want to achieve my goals and recover many valuable things in my life, like my old healthy habits, besides psychotherapy, I must get more disciplined and not letting my emotions pulling me away from my tasks. What I've certainly been doing wrong is that I try to recover all my old healthy habits and gaining new ones at the same time, so I just burn out myself and feel bad at night. I promise to come back next year to this comment and tell you that I made it and that I'm living a better life. Thanks for the tale!

    How I became disciplined:
I had a mental breakdown from working too hard. I thought I was lazy and worked harder, but I couldn't. My grades were terrible and I realized I was overworked and stayed home for three weeks. The day I went to school again I heard my aunt had just a few more weeks to live. I became a bit suicidal. She died a month later. (Then I wasn't suicidal anymore, don't worry). I got behind with school again. I needed to pass the fifth grade or go to a lower niveau on another school. I knew I would feel worse if I didn't pass, so I worked unbalievably hard (12 hours a day, everyday, with barely a break, for two months) although I knew I would overwork myself again, but that was okay if I would break in the summer vacation. But I broke two weeks too soon, worked on anyway, and got my second mental breakdowns in four months.
And that, people, is how you get discipline and pass school.
Can someone please tell me how to enjoy life because I didn't have free time without feeling guilty about homework since the first grade. And does someone know how to get rid of the self control because I hate always controlling myself. Thank you

In high school I had a 1.8 barely even graduated high school, had a lot of potential in football to be a productive starter in football but the helmet I received was too big for me and I was too scared to tell anyone and I was too scared to chase any of the girls of school that had crushes on me. I lied and tried to skip school when I could. I had friends but they all knew I was going no where... went to community college after high school and failed out worked at delivering pizza and did retail selling treadmills for a few years and kept working out and taking care of myself to an extent. Was hooked on Xanax and Kolonopin and was always getting fucked up.
Anyways my brother was murdered when I was 22, he was 4 years older than me and a few months after that this girl I really liked dumped me.... I had hit rock bottom. I threw the drugs (all except the alcohol hehehe) away, and made my mind up that even though EVERYONE thought I was a dumbass, that I would go back to college.... so I did, I had to climb through technical college to a satellite university, all I wanted to be was a psychologist originally, I climbed all the way to the university of South Carolina where I just in last December graduated with a degree in experimental psychology and now I work the department of social services, working for the state with excellent benefits a lot of paid time off and I work with all women. I get paid 37k and no it’s not amazing money but I can have my own place to live. I have a very nice vehicle and my friends all respect me and I kinda call the shots in my friend group. My friends respect and know what I’ve been through. Women like me as well but I’m still too scared to talk to pretty ones lol but hey I am who am. Anyways fuck Lucas be like me. Btw I don’t want to be a psychologist anymore. I want to be a guidance counselor so I can help kids that were like me in high school !

I want to achieve the following things:
    1) Wake up on time.
    2) Brush teeth regularly.
    3) Don't spend 90% of your time on your phone if it is not academics related.
    4) Workout and take a stroll with mother.
