Donna Summer "State of Independence"
Donna Summer covered Jon Anderson & Vangelis State of Independence on her 1982 album Donna Summer produced by Quincy Jones. Summers version of the song features an all-star choir including among others Michael Jackson, Brenda Russell, James Ingram, Dionne Warwick, Kenny Loggins, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder. It reached Number 14 in Britain and 41 in the US. Quincy Jones, who produced it, later claimed that it was the inspiration for the USA for Africa collaboration two years later.
Absolutely beautiful. 2024 anyone?
I am 61 now young at heart and this reminds me of my youth x x
Even the intro is better than anything in the charts!
💘LaDonna 4Eva💘
Who's here because of the Quincy Jones article?

Who's here because they like this song?
Who’s here because the Quincy Jones interview?
Me but where is it
9 seconds to 14 seconds you hear the bassline with no other music. It is much faster than Billie Jean but does sound similar sequence of notes
its the exact same sequence of notes except the first note is down an octave
BRENT SILBY ok, after you said that I slowed it down and yeah. Barely similar. Just barely.
Cory Me! Listening to it, it sounds similar, but Michael probably told her he was gonna sample 😂
The voices that are this tracks backing vocals blow my mind. Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Dionne Warwick, Brenda Russell, Christopher Cross, Dyan Cannon, James Ingram, and Kenny Loggins 🤯🤯the 80's were a totally different animal compared to todays music.
sorry i really cant heard michaels voice in the song im sure he just only credit himself but never sing backing vocals in donna's song
There are video clips showing the choir recording the song - Michael is very much there, along with so many other great voices-
I absolutely agree 👍
❤he is in this just backing really ax
@@hyacynthwiz MJ loved to be a voice from backing. You can hear him singing for his nephews or Stevie Wonder!
Thanks Donna for this wonderful song RIP
Donna Summer was really a great talent, so underrated she grew to be something of a pioneer over the decades. This great song was a staple track in a store where I worked weekends as a teenager in the early 80s. It helped make my working day a pleasure 😊 I was stunned when Donna made this beautiful mesmerising song with a fantastic world music feel. It was nothing like her equally great dance songs she made with the legendary electronic music wizard Giorgio Moroder in the 70s, but this was a world beating mature hit with a lot of thought and intelligence behind it. Brings back many memories of the early 80s in a lingering meditative way ❤
Her best, and most underrated song.
Except it's not her song. She's covered it.
@@StephenSweet So 'My Way" is not Sinatra's song? 'Respect' not Aretha's? Many artistes signature songs are covers.
@@freedomm That's right. 😊
It’s really her song. I’m a big fan of Jon Anderson, but for me this is Donna’s song.
The song is like a pet who found itself an owner.
(Terry Pratchett would have understand.)
The song is in its origin by Jon & Vangelis (from the Album "The friends of Mr.Cairo" (1981)) , súng ´by Jon Anderson and this is an alltime high, the best version!!!
But remarkable, that Donna gave a Mega-Contribution to this song with this cover!!!
Quincy Jones brought me here lol
SJMcFly, me too. I still can't find anything like Billie Jean from Michael Jackson in this music. He said bullshit.
Me too. Fuck quincey jones
Bruno Luan exactly lol but I have heard tales of Michael being a malicious person
I don't hear no Billie jean doe
SJMcFly I'm seriously trying to find what he was talking about lol
40 years old this year. And still great.
Good music NEVER stops being great. Theres some pre 1920s songs i really love, just wish i could find them.
Such a wonderful uplifting song. Something the kids of today just don't get to hear anymore
Still lovin this song in 2022
This song always made me cry. The first time I heard this song was in my childhood. I still love this song. RIP Dona
You are definitely right! ♥ ️ ♥ ️ ♥ ️
Makes me cry..,Rest in Heaven Donna..
Heavenly voice!!! Rest in eternal peace. Miss Summer you are so missed and loved.
An empowering and underated track!!! June 2024 ❤🎉
A Super Song from Donna Summer!
The way Donna sung...she made it seem effortless. Such a pure voice.
Yes! My thoughts, she was effortlessly brilliant. Legend ❤
OMG! I loved this song so much as a kid, didn't know any of the words, 40 years later didn't know who the artist was and have been trying to find it. My daughter showed me how using Google, microphone, and search a song. I whistled it, and it found it! I am complete now- great song, great memories. I knew it had spiritual significance back then, but I wasn't able to confirm it until now. This song flooded back into my memory during the quarantine and I would replay it in my mind to make myself happy.
You can judge the quality of a singer by the quality of the songs she chooses to cover. Donna Summer will be sadly missed.
One of my favourite Donna Summer songs 😀🙏🙏🙏
Me too
This song remind me of when I was a young guy
Is a very atipical song! Nothing to do with Disco or Rock, just a powerful tune in which Donna Summer gived a great performance. After more than forty years still at the top of the list.
Donna's music brought happiness to countless millions of people of all ages and creeds. RIP Donna Summer xXx
This is such a spiritual song with deep meaning to me - it still waters my eyes and gives me goosebumps to listen to it. RIP Ms. Summer - you were such a gift.
I agree, Jon Anderson is one of my all time favorite writers/lyricist
Me too, beautiful lyrics.
Donna Summers will always be Iconic & The Queen of Disco Forevermore ❤
You must check out the cover version "Spiritual High" by Moodswings featuring Chrissie Hynde!!
Did anyone else notice that Vangelis died exactly 10 years to the day after Donna? RIP to them both.
Still have the original on vinyl from back in the days.. What a song this was and still is,
The amount of amazing musicians singing in the choir is amazing!!
This song gave me courage, strength and it got me through living 2 years by myself in downtown San Francisco in my late 20's; thankfully, it was played frequently on WBLX in 1982.
This was playing in the Co-op! 😂 love hearing random bangers when I’m buying me doughnuts! 🍩
Still amazing till date, R.I.P. Donna Summer
Strange, we do things, despite fears, because we have to, makes our work all the more great, because we pushed through the worry and doubt and did what we had to anyway. Look at Donna's unblinking stare and comment at 1:39
Sounds like a signal from you
bring me to meet your sound
and I will bring you to my heart
Well she couldn't stop it. Had to be said. The message, whatever it meant to her, had to be dredged up, emblazoned at the cost of anything else in her life's purpose. That's courage!
Vangelis was on fire in the early 80's. On the heels of an Oscar for Chariots of Fire, he gets the cover treatment by Donna Summer!
He did so much better stuff than Chariots of Fire, but this cover is awesome. The music for the original Blade Runner was as good as it gets.
AWESOME SONG & SINGER YESS ICONIC MUSIC LEGEND DIED TO YOUNG DONNA SUMMER R.I.P. SADLY MISSED NOT FORGOTTEN GREAT MEMORIES, THANKYOU MY DEAR LOVELY FRIEND CHRIS BALTON FABULOUS UPOAD LOVE THIS SONG BRAVOOO XD NAMASTE FROM ENGLAND MY DEAREST BEAUTIFUL FRIENDS & FAMILY SENDING SMILES MY LOVE & LIGHT BIG WARM HUGS FROM THE HEART & SWEET BUTTERFLY KISSES . Thank You Jon Anderson & The Late Great "Vangelis"
Such an EPIC masterpiece. Donna may be gone BUT she left a body of work that will always be remembered. Pure quality and the FINEST of FINE vocals, lyrics and production! R.I.P!
This State of Independence shall be. So may it be.
One of my favorites from Donna Summer ❤ 😍
One of the most uplifting songs ever. Beautiful
Check out the cover version "Spiritual High" by Moodswings featuring Chrissie Hynde. You'll love it!
I love this song, as well as Jon and Vangelis' original version.
I've been a big fan of Donna since the disco era and this is easily my favorite song of hers. This reminds me how, as an 11 year old in the late 70's, I played the 17 plus minute version of 'MacArthur Park Suite' so much that I wore out the vinyl.
She was an incredible talent.
Thank you, Donna for your great contribution to music history, and thank you for sharing your incredible gift with us. Rest in peace.
Donna Summer a Legend..thanks for the music
No one can reach a candle to the great Donna Summer!
I’m here because I love this tune. I’m 53
this song should of been a number 1 for Donna.......it was way ahead of its time and before We are the World and Do they know it's Christmas
Still an amazing tune....here in 2024
Am I the only one whose here because they just love the song?
Yep, I'm here because of the Quincy Jones interview, too. I remember when this song came out. She was making her transition from disco, which was basically dead by 1982. I hear only a slight similarity between this and "Billie Jean". This and "They Don't Care About Us", yes. I can definitely hear that.
A Superstar in an era of mega talents.... we'll not see her kind again. R.I.P.
Never been a fan of disco but there was always something special about Donna Summer. 🌼👍🥰😎
Do you like Dance music at all?
This one though isn't disco. In fact, half of her catalog😀 isn't.
This isn't really disco.
Try "Love's Unkind" and "I Feel Love"
Brings back a lot of memories. What a great singer she was. Thanks for your music Donna
Who's here to listen to Donna's amazing voice? Don't give a hoot about Quincy!
Fantastic song!! During Donna's posthumous induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Bruce Sudano, her husband, said that Q produced this great song while Donna was pregnant with her 3rd daughter, Amanda!
I had the privilege of owning this album more than 20 years ago. This was my Favorite song on the album along with The Woman in Me. I had never heard anything so beautiful. I was in my early teens when I owned this album and first heard this song. Fast Forward 30 or more years later in my mid 40's. I am still loving this. It brings tears to my eyes. Rest in Peace LaDonna Gaines Sudano aka Donna Summer.
The album got a nice make over for the 40 years anniversary with some extra tracks…I think iTunes got it! FYI
Glorious. One of her finest tracks. Even better than the original
Donna Summer was one of the great musical icons of music. She was one of the most underrated musical legends of our time. Her beauty was only surpassed by her musical talent. She was apart of a generation where music really was music and it meant something special. There will never be another one like her.
Brilliant song and voice and great to see a fully clothed female singer for a change
This song gives me goosebumps..
She was always so elegant and lovely ........one of the most underrated singers ever! She was so much more than a "Disco Queen".
beyond! check out 'Crayons' her final album. great different songs...and that voice...she is truly missed
Tied 4 the most top 40 hits in the 70s, 2 top 5 hits in August of 79 n did it again later in 1979, top hits in the 80s and a top 10 in the 90s. She is not underated.
@Evan Hodge Don't come for me unless I send for you peanut gallery!
@Evan Hodge Your opinion is wrong and mine is right - now go away Troll and grow up!
Beautiful voice!!!
Nobody brought me here I was born in 77 and lived through the 80s. I also have this song on my galaxy gear watch ⌚
ImAm I the only one here bc I like this song and am on lock down memory lane?
What a beautiful woman. She brings tears to my eyes. I am stunned by her talent and depth.
Love seeing the footage from NYC from 1982. Donna Summer knew how to pick songs. She was one of her generations best.
Very few singers can cover a song and make their own , donna summer made this song her song with this brilliant treatment ,
Masterpiece Donna , rip
Yesterday's news was really sad. In my mind Donna Summer owned the first image of a black, beautiful, sophisticated, female. I'm thinking of a host of her songs that are such a part of my musical history. State of Independence stands out as supremely special. Not only was it a great song (VanGelis I'll always thank you for this) but I remember it somewhat elevating her as a mature artist after all the controversy during her earlier career. Donna R.I.P. knowing you brought beauty to the world.
My beautiful mum loved this song... I hope you hear it in heaven.. X
Donna summer the absolute best . . . .
Vangelis left the earth and return to Heaven.
Thank you Greek God of composers!
Donna Summer war great! Only she could switch from gospel to disco, from disco to rock with a great success, because she has a incredible voice. She was more than a Disco Queen, she was also a Queen of Hearts, a cristian woman, mother and wife.
Rest in peace Donna! We will never forget you!
Well MJ could do the same easily
Beautifully stated friend.... in the arms of the Redeemer forever.
Nearly 2022 and you still bring me to your heart Donna.
Love the time capsule video of early to mid 1980s New York City everyday street scenes.
One of my best song of the 80's even interesting by Vangelis but more sensitive by Donna.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN'S SOUL...LIKE HOLY WATER TO MY LIPS...
Donna Summer FOREVER!
AND EVER!!
We just love big bands or solo artists and she is as good as it gets on the latter ..RIP .y dear xxx
40 years ago. Never gets old
Miss you Donna! Your legions of fans love you and your everlasting music!
After following Donna Summer's career, this is easily my favorite song by her. I love Jon Anderson and Vangelis' version of their composition, but Donna and Quincy Jones brought the song to such a different and amazing level. Just an amazing song that is in heavy rotation on my playlist. Donna, you are still loved and missed.
Born on this day in 1948. Loved forever.
I first learnt of this song in 1997, but not the original version. It was the Murk Club Mix. Loved it back then, and still do today. Give it a listen, although it might not appeal to purists. As that's the mix I listened to lots in my youth, for me it's by far my favourite.
Anything Quincy Jones touches becomes pure gold. Now Donna Summer was something else. Her voice is so addictive. I can't get enough of it. One of the greatest set of pipes ever. Fantastic timing, phrasing and she could go from sweet'n'easy to belting it out big time - and everything exacly where it should be. Vastly underrated!!!!
This is partly what influenced Billie Jean. MJ killed the sample tbh. Quincy adding icing. Crazy
So surreal to hear Donna Summer doing a Jon Anderson vocal. She has a marvelous voice, it's just so odd to hear it used with Anderson-style phrasing and music backdrop.
One of my favourite of hers. Sounds great to me! 😍👌🏽
Stangely I think she could sing many Yes songs too :)
Wonderful song by a precious lady so sadly missed xx
“State of Independence” is a song recorded in 1981 from “The Friends of Mr. Cairo” album by Jon Anderson of Yes and Vangelis.
Y
Vangelis composed too for Demmis Roussos....So this song is a poetry itself
LOVE their version
I worked in an Art Store in Nashville in 1999-2000 and she was one of our regular customers. She came in often to purchase high quality colored pencils, and was always so lovey to those of us who worked together at this small locally owned store in Green Hills. We had many Customers who were in the Music industry, and they were all so kind to us, as this town is their home and this is their neighborhood, and they, like all of us, have hobbies, so, as artist ourselves, we enjoyed showing everyone new products and techniques that might enrich their off-time & artistry. But, full admission, It was always fun to see her roll up in her bad ass range rover, Looking everyday effortlessly gorgeous in yoga pants and a baseball cap with all her hair pulled back in a simple pony tail. xoxo K
A memory to treasure.
@@christinetogwell5440 There will NEVER be another like her!
absolute brilliant masterpiece of electro synth pop funk. divine
I see Donna..I click. Didn't know about QJones controversy till I read the comments. And then reacted with who gives a shit. And looked for another Donna Summer gem "The mystery of love." Miss you Donna.
Absolutely beautiful. The Taylor Swifts of this world give their right arm for a song as good as this in their repertoire
I have only hear this song before today from Jon Anderson and Vangelis....Donna Summer does a really excellent job. Not too often I hear the same song from two different artists sound outstanding like they do!
A true Queen, a true artist! every time I hear her songs, what a thrill!
So do I! The music of Donna is always linked with good memories. The soundtrack of good times of my troubleled youth!
Country music, Donna being a member of the country music HoF brought me here and my love of reggae made me stay
"Industry" watcher here!!
She was a great star! Forever Donna Summer in my heart!
One of the best songs I've ever heard. Fantastic
Not a Princess not a Queen but a Pharaoh of Disco music!
🌹💕🙏
I like this song. Beautiful!!! song. RIP Mrs. Donna Summer.
My favorite female singer, great voice and so sexy.Best song of 1982.
Beautiful video.
Donna Summer was a magnificent artists who transcended ethnic boundaries and thus got into impressive musical expressions, as here. I admired her ever since I was a teenage man.
Some people God spends a little more time creating. RIP beautiful lady. 😢
A true powerhouse in musical history. After One Direction fade away and are forgotten with the rest of today's shite, like the Spice Girls before them...You will still have this angel being listened to by someone in the future. She was so beautiful and so bloody talented. RIP Donna xxx
Thank you Donna. I was a kid when i heard this, it just came back. Your Missed!!!
One of times the cover is much better thsn the original, of course Vangelis was an amazing songwriter, of course anything quincy jones touches turns to gold
Love this song written by john Andersen from yes .rest in peace Donna.🙏✌.Godbless you Amen 🕊🕊🦋🦋🌹🌹🌻🌼🌷💛
This lady was the queen of the music world when the song first out. She will never be forgotten by myself and many more fans worldwide. R.I.P. Donna.
