RULES:
On your turn, before you can buy or trade, you must roll both dice. Then, based on what number is rolled the corresponding resource hex that has that number, produces its resource to all players who have a settlement or city touching that hex. You receive 1 of the resources of that hex for every settlement touching it, and you receive 2 of the resources of that hex for every city touching it. All numbers produce and all players touching that number receive proper corresponding resource cards.
There is no hand size limit. However, if any player (including you) rolls a 7, then any player with more than 7 cards must discard half of them (rounded down). Additionally, whoever rolled the 7, must move the robber to a different terrain hex. The Robber may not return to the desert nor be moved onto a sea hex. Whichever hex you choose, place the robber covering the number on that hex showing that that terrain cannot produce resources when that number is rolled. If any other player has a city or settlement touching the affected hex, you must pick one card at random from one of their hands and steal it. You then continue your turn as normal.
After you roll dice and collect resources, or move the robber, you are allowed to trade with other players or the bank and/or buy things. Only the player who’s turn it is can initialize a trade and you can only trade with other players who have resources (you cannot gift resources). A trade with a player is whatever you agree on but you cannot trade development cards and like resources. You cannot trade 2 wool for 1 wool. Both players have to agree on the trade.
Additionally, on your turn, you may trade with the bank: 4 of one resource for 1 of any other. If you own a settlement or city that is touching a port, on your turn you are allowed to trade with that port’s specifics. 3:1 ports allow you to trade 3 of one resource for 1 of any other. 2:1 ports allow you to trade 2 of one specific resource as indicated by that port, for 1 of any other. You don’t have to trade if you don’t want to.
You may also buy during you turn. Pay the bank the proper resources and you can buy roads, settlements, cities, and development cards. Roads cost 1 brick and 1 wood and must be placed between two hexes connecting to one of your existing pieces so long as a road isn’t already present. If you have the longest, continuous road, and it is greater than 5 pieces, then you take possession of the longest road card, no matter who has it. The longest road is worth 2 victory points.
A settlement costs 1 brick, 1 wood, 1 wheat, and 1 wool, and must be placed on an available intersection connecting to one of your roads. No settlement may be adjacent to another settlement or city.
A City costs 3 ore and 2 wheat. You may only upgrade one of your existing settlements into a city. Remove that settlement and replace it with a city. Remember, terrain hexing touching one of your cities, produces twice as many resources as a settlement and are worth twice as many victory points.
A Development card costs 1 ore, 1 wheat, and 1 wool. Draw one development card from the deck. You may not use a development card the turn you purchased it. Anytime during your turn, even before you roll, you may play a development card. You may only play one development card per turn, unless it is a victory point, then you may reveal as many as you have to allow you to win. All the cards say what they do and the most common card is the soldier. The soldier allows you to move the robber to another space.
When you play a soldier it plays in front of you and stays there fro the rest of the game. When it is played, it acts just like you rolled a 7, except it does not affect the number of cards in player’s hands. If you have the most solder’s in...

Brother invited me over to play this game and told me it was easy. Looked this up beforehand and I feel like I just took an introduction into economy class o.o
I know its been three years but how did game night go
Guess not very well
excerpt from a 5 star review on a $126 USD board game with an estimated play time of 4-8 hours.
"Reasons not to buy this game:
1. You think the concept of Space Lions doesn't make much sense and you just want to go back to watching America's Got Talent
2. You think Settlers of Catan is a deep strategy game and you think Carcassone lasts a bit too long.
3. You fail to see that taking a negative attack modifier to gain an advantage in tech researching is absolutely worth it
4. The phrase "40 pages of rules" makes you wrinkle your nose and suggest that maybe the group could just play Cards Against Humanity again."
it's literally a running gag to make fun of people who find this type of thing even remotely complex... because its genuinely trivial if you actually listen to the person trying to teach you instead of freaking out over the fact that the rulebook has more than 3 pages
CooL
It’s been years since I learned it but now that I know the rules really well so I feel like it is easy
God, this makes constitutional law look straightforward.
Let's learn to play Catan
5min later
Ight Imma head out.
I came for the video, but stayed for the comments. 😂
still trying to figure out how to organize number tiles in alphabetical order
They had letters on them.
The backside has letters.
They have letters on them
Eight, eleven, five, four, nine, one, seven, six, ten, three, twelve, two.
Edit: ok so there is no one or seven, but I spent a surprisingly long time working out that order and I'm proud of my work so they're staying
@@gillablecam oh yeah that's cause the game is played with 2 dice so 1 isn't possible and 7 is the dice numberthat moves the robber.
This video was extremely helpful in introducing my family to this game; much simpler for an 8 year old to view this than to read the directions, and clearer than my own explanations. Thanks!
Your poor son
This is a full time job
lmfao
It's short. It's sweet. it gets a thumbs up. the 20+ minute explanations on youtube put me to sleep.
If you find yourself needing sleep, use the 20+ minute explanations.
Another settlement needs your help. Here, I'll mark it on your map.
🤣
LMAOOOO
i was curious about playing this game until i watched this. now im not. forget it
I feel the same
Same here. I saw my niece & her BF with this game in the box and out of curiosity looked it up. If I'm to put fourth this much effort in learning a game I want some combat. D&D for the win!
It sounds like a lot of rules...but this game is super easy to pickup. Still recommend you learning it. Learn with friends who are willing to teach you.
it would be easier if you try it, like me who didnt know how to play Clue, but after 2 games i am niw a detective
Same lol
5mn, clear, concise, to the point. Thanks, great video!
I feel this game is like beer. When you first try it, it seems very unpleasant but if you try it enough you run the rick of becoming addicted.
And later you beat your family
@@Zlonk7 figuratively of course
as in you smash them into little collectible figurines, as one does when plays catan.
@@ezraleslie1361 of course!
I can attest to that
I was told this game was easy. It's more complicated than nuclear fission. I don't get it at all. I'm going back to translating Plato into Swahili. It much more straightforward.
Hugo Hugo I’ve been stuck on what eye to look at while trying to grasp what the hell he is talking about
lol check out civilization, the board game. Your brain will explode
Hugo Hugo I saw this at a thrift store for 1.00. As much as I want to learn it there's just no way. This guy lost me 30 seconds into the video.
If you think this is complicated, try 878 Vikings!
Late comment, and somewhat out of context, but nuclear fission actually isn't that complex.
Incredibly detailed and succinct explanation of the rules. These games always sound more complicated than they are but love how the point of the game was included first, followed by setup, followed by additional rules.
A very easy game to get the hang of - yes there's quite a lot going on but it flows so well, once you've had one round and other players are making sure you're doing it correctly, you'll get the hang of it without any problems. There are cards that explain everything really well too.
Thanks for this, super helpful! I just got the game and thusly realized I am a terrible teacher & my family couldn't play with me
+asilverbox i got it 3 days back. yet to play it. My family currently preferring to play Cluedo over this.
If you think this is hard to teach, try teaching Axis & Allies 50th Anniversary Edition to someone.
I was wondering what the kid from the 6th sense was doing these days.
Darn. This is really well done and the graphics add so much value to this video. Excellent job.
I only watched this to understand a UA-cam video of people playing I wanted to watch but it was extremely helpful 😂❤️
I like how concise your videos are. Many other video board game tutorials take 25 minutes explaining the rules and that's just too long imo.
Thanks for that video , you explained the rules very well , i found an answer to the question i was searching for ,
please continue your good work :) need more video like this for today's more modern board game. There so many intresting but heavy on the rules games. Catan compare to them is just a small rule book hah
Amazing guide! Shared it with my friend who is new to Catan for tonight's game.
great synopsis here! nice brunch shirt man! happy new year!
Just bought this game about 3 hours ago... I took one look at the instructions and was thinking like I had made a mistake... But after watching this video it’s not as hard as it seems. Feel like I can start playing lol Thanks😊
Best explanation on UA-cam. Massive thanks.
Thanks for this! You did a great job with your clear and concise explanation.
Holy.crap I have been playing it wrong this whole time. Thank you for making this video! I LOVE YOU!!
Oh no! You have to confess now - which bit were you getting wrong?!
Great video! Use this video as a supplemental tool to the directions. As with any game, once you have played once or twice it becomes much clearer.
Very clear explanation! Played last night and it was a lot of fun :D
Glad you did this tutorial, thank you!
I gotta finish college first before playing this game ... so freakin complex !!!
Thanks. I come back every time I need a refresher
Just bought this recently. Good thing I kept the receipt after watching this video.
thank you! very clear explanation!
Haha should have watched this before playing after years. Messed up quite a few things :D Cheers.
I love your catan video , very clear than others
This clears up a lot about the setup. We’ve just been using the default map from the book or stuff from online and it doesn’t work well
Thank you! Very helpful in terms of teaching the family.
Glad it was helpful!
thenk you. very understandable and useful.
Sounds super complicated! Didn’t open our box yet but got it for Christmas. Wanted to get the gist of it from watching this vid. I’ll get it, it’ll just take me a bit
Quite helpful. Thank you! :)
Thank you! that was very helpful. Keep building ;)
The soldier is called a knight now, especially since Cities & Knights was added.
Brilliant explanation, thank you! :)
Absolute perfect breakdown and guide to this game. Thank you!
Fantastic! Great job!
this video just gave me a rush of nostalgia
This guy has come so far!
Thanks for doing this video!
really good guide!
Very helpful! Thanks...
Thank you!!!! This is great
This was way more helpful than the 16 pages of institutions. Really easy to understand
I look at the guy and understand that he is super kind, like those kind of people!
I've always been good at this game for some reason
Longest road is not greater than 5 segments, it is "at least" 5. Largest Army is not greater than 3 soldier cards, it is "at least" 3. Other than that, great explanation of the game.
+Ruben Hernandez good catch, you are correct. I should have said "greater or equal to 3".
+Triple S Games i ❤ your 🎥
Stfu you’re trash
A buddy of mine brought this to a camping trip a few years back and we all became obsessed with this game it was basically all we did there haha. My brother and his friend (the trip organizer) were all sorts of butt hurt we’d rather play this than go hike in 90 degree weather lmao. Good times
Why do the harbors have trade details on them when you are going to cover them randomly with the harbor pieces?
That was very helpful
You can return the robber to the desert hex if you so choose. I would never do that but if you’re playing a friendly ‘social’ strategy it’s technically within the rules.
Wow this is a lot simpler than I thought it would be
Thank you!
Thanks man!
Awesome review
Great video!
..can we build more than 1 in a turn, example build road, settlement? and what is the harbor with "?" mark? does it mean we can trade two different cards for 1 resource on the bank?..
This game isn't nearly as complicated as the comments would lead you to believe. If you give the game a try while referring to this video, or the instructions, it's really easy to get a feel for. There's a lot of options on your turn, but most of them aren't very complicated.
The Retro Encabulator video makes more sense to me.
Thanks a lot
Love the dish.
thank you
My strategy guide for the base game is free today, June 19th:

I looked Catanomics up in my University's list of majors and couldn't find it...this tew much!
This sounds about as fun as having a baptist preacher for a father.
It's actually fun.
I mean I do and I find the game fun
Your joke is about as funny as a heart attack
Laughed so hard at this comment...
I had a Baptist preacher as a father I went to over 20 different countries and lived a privileged and enjoyable life
This game is very simple. Played it with my brother today. The german version by Kosmos is much better!
question:
if roads are in a hexagon, is that road technically infinitely long?
THAT was only 5 minutes??
Looks fun, I think. If I understood the most basic concepts correctly.
But minimum number of brains for game-play appears to be three. That might not be enough.
I wanted to understand how this game is played when I saw Mark, Bob and Wade play this...ehh...nevermind then, it's much more complicated that I thought.
Also, my Catan rules say you CAN move the Robber to the desert tile.
I'm not sure if the rules were just changed sometime in the last 7 years (definitely possible), but you're allowed to move the robber back to the desert.
I have a question about the when asking opponents about their resources, If I ask what resources they have, do they have to be honest with me? or can they lie about what they have?
I ask because I saw this on the catan website
Is it true that the number of cards in your hand is always open and available information? Specifically, should it be readily apparent how many development cards you have, but have not yet played? Or can you hide the resource cards under the table or in your pocket so that no one can see how many cards you have?
Yes. The quantity of cards you have in your hand is public information. But the identity of those cards is not. If another player asks, for example, how may resource cards do you have, right before he moves the robber, you must tell him truthfully the number of resource cards you have in your hand. The same goes for Development or Progress cards. The number of each type of card (resource, development, etc.) that you have is public knowledge at all times. (But, not the specific cards, i.e. wood, sheep, rock…)
They are allowed to lie about what they have, but now about the quantity of cards they have.
What are the little dots on the number circle cards?
The number of dots are the odds of that number to appear in the dice. Being the 6 and the 8, the most common
Yeah, the number of dots is the number of different combinations that can be rolled to give that number.
Seven (moving the robber) has six (1-6, 2-5, 3-4, 4-3, 5-2, 6-1)
Six and eight have five each (Six has 1-5, 2-4, 3-3, 4-2 and 5-1; eight has 2-6, 3-5, 4-4, 5-3 and 6-2)
Five and nine have four each (Five has 1-4, 2-3, 3-2 and 4-1; nine has 3-6, 4-5, 5-4 and 6-3)
Four and ten have three each (Four has 1-3, 2-2 and 3-1; ten has 4-6, 5-5 and 6-4)
Three and eleven have two each (Three has 1-2 and 2-1; eleven has 5-6 and 6-5)
And two and twelve have one each (1-1 and 6-6 respectively)
What this means is that moving the robber is more likely than any individual other roll, it only has a 1/6 chance of happening overall with the 36 different possible rolls.
That's different. The version I have in my school here in Korea just has dots on the 6 and 9's to differentiate them. There are no dots telling you what you would roll on the dice to get them.
In expansions or ultimate variations you need more.
It’s not hard just have to play and you’ll love it
it sounds cool
This guy crushed it...
Damn this guide is clearer than the instruction book that the game came with.
Thanks!
Agree
Catan has changed since this video was made.
Wait until this gets reccomended to people in 9 years
Thanks. Very concise; well explained. How long is the average gameplay?
I usually play with 4-5 people and it can sometimes go on to 50 to even 90 minutes, but time really does pass by quickly in this game.
Angela Palermo about 5 yrs
We started a game in 1974 and are about half way through now. Half way through reading the rules, that is.
😂😂😂😂😂 I know I'm 5 years late with laughing at this😂😂 @@dantheman5745
Good Tips: It is convenient to use the 3D Catan Dice App
The day a friend told asked me if I ever played this Game I said nope. Cuz I had never really heard of it.
But It rang a bell. So I think I forgot.
It’s not what I consider an old game. Like monopoly. Or risk. Or life. Same day I got home looked it up. It was last week.
All the results were about the inventor. Klaus Teuber, it was the day he died. Only 70.
Plot Twist: Catan is the last plot of land left on Earth…
i play D&D and i still didn't get half of that XD lol
then you are puny
for some reason
Probably rolled a 3 on an Intelligence check.
How don't you, it's quite simple.
Bruh this guy is a sentient rule card of SOC. Did a great job explaining. But just as the rule card, I have to go back and understand what he just said..
Watching this vid to learn how to play with friends but end up more confused 😖 more than neflix witcher series
Interesting
Ya know, my family bought this game and now I think we should stick to simpler things like like 5 dimensional chess with multiverse time travel.
i dont understand why why you cant place a city above that number 11 at 4:08. theres no adjacent green city or settlement there so why cant red place a settlement there? why cant he place one at 9 either?
It has to be 2 away from any settlement including your own
So how do you play this game?
