This was the best out of all the "how to play catan" videos! Thank you!
i definitely agree
I always love screaming "VICTORY!!!" every time I teach someone the game for the first time and then school them. No one ever invites me back after the Monopoly trick either. Great tutorial Ryan. Always love your videos.
Take it from me: chants of "In your face!", while comforting, do little to endear people to joining your gaming group.
Yes. I watched the entire "THING." It is a little before midnight, so I watched a few moments, twice. I appreciate you. Likely saved me an embarrassing start to my quest for DOMINATION.
Today, Catan. Tomorrow... uh... 5-6 player Catan!
because I'm... *LEFT HANDED*
Amazing job explaining the game. So much easier to follow than the rule book but also great visual cues and just the right amount of banter. Loved the insider tips to keep in mind as well. Really excellent demonstration. Thank you!
Hands down the most concise and understandable Catan video on UA-cam
I introduced my parents to Catan today, they enjoyed it!
Glad I watched this though, as apparently I didn’t use the right rules, and this sounds more fun than how we played
My wife and I just learned from you!! We were puzzled how to play it but now we can play during lock down! Thank you! Just finished playing! You are so good explaining it!
It was my great pleasure!
This video is really well edited and really well explained. Great job!
I think I finally get it. Great video. Thanks!
Incredibly helpful, creative, and entertaining. Thank you for your efforts! :)
This is the best Catan guide ever. Period. Very well described. Thank you.
This was a great refresher! Thanks
Not only was this the most informative and easy-to-follow Catan guide I've seen, but he made me guffaw several times as well :D Awesome!
GOL
actually the best tutorial ever... because you clearly explain both the do and the don'ts
Seriously- I just found you and can’t believe how good your how to play videos are but you need to do more!!! Your too good at it! :)
Thanks so much, Nancy!
After 5 videos and reading the entire guide that comes with catan it made no sense until this video 😭 thank you man
So helpful and entertaining! Thanks!
Been looking for a clear explanation and you delivered. Thanks man
Great How To play video. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for that entertaining review!
Really high quality vid with just the right amount of humor
Thank you for this guide! Never played before and got catan for Christmas. Your video was fun and easy to follow, especially as a beginner! Cant wait to give it a go :)
Let me know what you think of it!
Well said. Love this video. thank you for sharing!
Thanks, this was really clear
I had played Catan once at my friends' place, and thought of getting one myself. Your video sealed the deal, and halfway through your video, I had placed the order. Waiting to get my hands on it (3-5 working days :P), so that I can play that Monopoly card!!!
Amazing description. Lively and engaging. Thanks a lot!
That’s awesome! i hope you have a good time with it.
Cheers, great explanation
Best explanation on UA-cam for this game.
Thank you so much for creating this video!
6:32 I never thought this sight would give me the chills.
It's okay. We boiled our skin afterward.
I just watched another video and almost gave the game away (and also lost the will to live), but after watching this im looking forward to starting. Thanks so much!
This was the most easily understood video. Thank you!
Thank you for this excellent video. I just got the on-line version and played the tutorial. Your video really helped me out a lot!

Excellent explanation. Thanks
This is the best explanation of Catan out there
Great video well done!
Best one I've seen. Thanks!
This is my favourite game board video made by you yet. Probably because (Settlers of) Catan is such a old favourite of mine. And I've done all the stupid stuff you mentioned.
:) Thanks. Stay tuned... i have a couple of other classics in the works that you'll definitely recognize.
The graphic overlays were really useful. Thanks.
Im looking for an overview rules video to send my family, as a preview before game night. This one is perfect. Thanks and nicely done!

You'll definitely know how to play Catan, but i can't do much about you looking like an idiot. :P
@@NightsAroundaTable Touche sir
'and immediately begins building forts and structures with them the moment they get bored' This is so true lmfao
ABSOLUTELY best explanation video I’ve found I advise everyone we teach this game to to watch this.

Thank you!😀
Funny and the best Catan explanation video out there. Who thumbs down this vid??
Thanks for my review of the game with you Ryan, I’m about to head over to play a game with two of my gamer nephews here in Kingston. Haven’t played in quite awhile and didn’t want to be a complete dolt.
What you _really_ need is a strategy guide so you can whomp 'em! Quick tips:
1. Try not to build on a harbour off the top of the game, unless you can also get frequently-rolling numbers on the resource that harbour needs
2. Avoid building near the desert
3. Always poll the other players for what they might have in their hands before unleashing a monopoly card
4. Remember that sheep/ore/wheat is a great combo that can aid in a development card strategy. There are (i think) four 1-point cards in the development deck, plus two more if you get the Largest Army by using your soldier cards. Add that to the 2 points you begin the game with, and you're most of the way to 10 pts to win!
When you start the game do your 2 settlements count as victory points, for example at the very beginning of the game you have 2 victory points?
Yes, correct!
@@notpriya3097 shut up
I don't wanna blow my brains out, now that I finally understand what's it about. Thanks. 👍 Very well explained.
Save that for when you actually play it.
j/k j/k
@@NightsAroundaTable Haha. Can't wait to play it now.
Great video!👍 I subscribed! 😃
Thanks so much, Vincent! That's very helpful!
@@NightsAroundaTable You're very welcome Ryan 🙂👍
Best guide of all time. I spent an hour or more watching worthless explanations.
Your video is professional awesome
great video, we're about to play for the first time as a family!
Thanks, Jacob! Enjoy!
@@NightsAroundaTable It's obvious you put a lot of work into this video, so, thank you. I played this game when I was an exchange student in Germany back in the 90s, forgot what it was called (settlers in German), re-discovered it as 'catan' and are finally ready to play! I think it's a great family game, I much prefer it over monopoly for example. I love the ability to create different maps with the tiles. Cheers!
@@jwbeaton You're right - it beats Monopoly pretty handily. If your family takes to it, there's a whole world of modern board games out there for you to discover! Just check my channel. i have a growing list of games i think are great for families.
ua-cam.com/video/E5j6b2qjeCU/v-deo.html
that was a very complete h2p video, thanks
Well done
thank you!
thank you
cool game there thks
Very helpful video! Curious for the 5-6 player expansion are tile/resource placements random?
Yes! You just build a bigger map, and you get extra number tokens to lay down a larger spiral.
@@NightsAroundaTable Sweet, thank you! Any recommended configurations in terms of resource and number placement? :)
Thank you bro really helpfull :D
nice video, very helpful to get started quickly! just a quick question, playing a knight also makes players with more than 7 cards discard half of their hand?
No
@@jeritwohlford7727 i'm with Jerit!
Awesome video! Quick question on the robber, does the one card that gets stolen go back to the bank? Or does the player who rolled 7 keep the one card?
Great question! The player who moves the robber keeps the card.
I played this for the first time this weekend, and really enjoyed the game. According to the rules explanation at the 3:08 mark a new settlement must be connected by roads to your other settlements, but the board is not set up this way. All the second settlements aren't connected by roads, or am I missing something?
Ah! Setup is actually the one time you can break that rule. Before the game officially begins, you place two settlements. You can place your second one clear across the island from the first, and it doesn't have to be connected at all. But with each of your first two settlements, you place one road, and each of those roads DO have to be connected to each settlement you place.
Thank you for the reply, I watched the video again and I missed where you explained that the first go round. Thanks again, great video.
8:23...killing me🤣🤣🤣
better than the last video i watched about this shit
13:56 - INITIAL SETUP INSTRUCTIONS
If someone cuts off your road like described at 3:44 , can you continue building your road since it was already established after their settlement?
Also, if someone built their settlement before your road was long enough to cut into, can you continue building past their settlement?
1. Yep - if someone interrupts your road, you can keep extending it from either end.
2. Nope - you can't extend roads past someone's settlement or city. Your road development in that direction is effectively blocked by your opponent's structure.
@@NightsAroundaTable thank you so much!!
Do you also take resource cards from the hex’s your roads are on?
No - just settlements and cities.
@@NightsAroundaTable thank you. What is the point of growing the road then other than the 2 points road card?
Cann u pls do pandemic next, getting it for my birthday 💜💜
Super happy birthday! Sadly, i’m not a big co-op fan. Are you getting base Pandemic, or the Legacy version?
@@NightsAroundaTable Thanks for responding 😂 my mom said its base
@@that1randomspacestick93 You'll have a great time with it! Massively popular game. And very... you know. Timely. :)
1) Do you have build a settlement near the harbour (at the ending point) to get resourers..?
2) in my turn play the dice...Can i play more than 2 or more development card at my turn ?
Thank you your explanation helped a lot 👍
1) Yes- you need to build all the way out to a harbour and have a city/settlement on that junction to take advantage of its trade ratio. A harbour doesn't give you anything when you roll the dice though.
2) You can only play 1 development card on your turn. If you play a soldier before rolling the dice, you don't get to play another dev card after rolling.
@@NightsAroundaTable Thank you..👍
thanks dude!
Great video, thank you for posting. I threw a like and sub your way!
Thanks so much for your support, Ryder!
do we ge to chose where we put our starting settlemnts
Yes! In turn order, everyone places 1 settlement. Then in reverse turn order, everyone places a second settlement. Your starting hand is made up of the cards matching the tiles that your second settlement touches.
Can you make a video about cites and knights? I just bought cites and knights and its a lot more complex then the original catan.
You're absolutely right! If i do make one, i might have to use my 2000-era copy. i'll double-check to make sure all the rules are the same.
Nights Around a Table thank you, me and my family are trying to play right now and the rules are very complex
@@yxz5198 It just seems that way, especially if you're trying to learn from the rulebook, which i don't find is very well written. If you have someone teach you in person, it's a lot smoother. Welcome to modern board gaming! i hope you catch the bug. :)
Just bought an expansion and an the extension.. Unknowingly without having 1st bought the original game...
Disappointing lol!
Though it seems like a fun game to learn n play with the fam during these trying times. Ill be sure to pick it up tomorrow!
Oh no! i have a video in the works where i warm people new to the hobby about expansions and extensions. Sorry i didn’t reach you in time! :)
Do the victory point cards still count being in your hand, when you roll a 7?
Only resource cards are considered when the robber comes calling (wood, sheep, brick, ore, and wheat). Any other card type is safe.
@@NightsAroundaTable Thanks! Awesome video, very detailed than others I have seen!
Can’t seem to find a definitive answer. I understand that when someone initially steals the longest road they get those two points plus an additional two for victory points.
What happens when someone steals the longest road from the second person that originally stole it? Does the second person keep their two victory points or do they lose all four?
Let me try to clear a few things up: in Catan, you don’t really “gain” points. You HAVE points. At the end of your turn, if the number of points you currently have is 10, you win. But scores don’t “lock in” or ratchet up. The amount of points you have now may increase or decrease later.
Let’s say you currently have zero points. (Impossible, i know. But watch.) When you gain the longest road card, you have two points. When you lose the card, you have zero points again. And the person holding the card now has 2 points.
If that person loses the card to someone else, now you each have zero points. And the third player who holds the card has 2 points.
So the card is like a “hot potato,” except it’s good.
Does that make sense?
