One house rule my family uses to make the game more challenging, during set up we shuffle the terrain hexes and place them face down. Next we place our settlements and roads. Then we randomize the numbers after which we turn the terrain hexes over. This way you have no idea what your starting resources are and there's a chance you're bordering the desert.
I watched multiple versions of how to play Catan. Yours, by far, is the easiest to understand and pretty thorough!! Thanks so much! How I wish we can take you to our family outings and you can be our Game Master! 🙂
Thank you so much for creating this video! I played Catan the first time last night and had 3 people trying to explain it while we were playing, which was confusing since I wasn't told some of the rules until midway through the game. I wish I had seen your video before last night ! You explain the game clearly and show examples that help me understand the rules now. I am looking forward to seeing your strategy video before the next time I play.
This video was enormously helpful. I received the game for Mother's Day and was bewildered by all the pieces and rules. You made it all so simple. Thanks!
It's a very good explanation of the game. I'm happy to don't only rely on the booklet of rules that came with the game because of lot of rules are very subject to interpretation. I will repeat your video a couple of times I think. Thanks!
Thanks for showing the rules. Did not know this game, until a random search on UA-cam. Looks like a good game. Simple, but complex to master. Many thanks.
i'm confused, i've watched several videos on setting up this game, and they contradict each other. i've heard that (after initial setup) you take resources from BOTH settlements' surrounding areas, and i've heard you only get resources from the SECOND settlement. you said both... the rules say 'each player takes their strating resources immediately after building their second settlement, for each terrain hex adjacent to the SECOND settlement, take a corresponding resource card from the supply'... yet YOUR video isn't the only one i've seen that says to take the cards for BOTH setllements... the game is really fun, thanks for the video!
I am late to the game to steal an old saying, but I have wanted to learn this game for a long time and now specifically for VR but also in board copy I as well. I have yet to find a good video to teach me... until this one thank you! Great Job.
My nephews (6 & 9) first introduction to Catan was the Junior version. They loved it so we graduated to the full fat version and they HATED it. They did not like having turns where they might not have anything to do. We solved the problem by bringing in the market from the Junior version and allowing them to trade cards with the market rather than with other players. We have yet to buy any of the expansion boxes though, they are quite a few and I have no idea what would be best for them to try.
We use the robber house rule you described but can put it on any hex without penalizing anyone else. It speeds the game which is important when you're playing with younger kids. I like the 2 & 12 house rule! We're going to use it!
Thanks for this one. Cleared up a lot of clouds hanging over some of the major points of game play. Side note: random can be subjective and depends on the eye of the beholder.
@@gandalfthegrey2171 It says right in the book that comes with any Catan game that when you start the initial game setup everyone only collect the resources from the 2nd settlement placed not both only the 2nd.
What do you use the extra maritime trade port pieces for? I assume you could further randomize play using those instead of the standard printed ones, but I can’t find anything about them in the rule book. Perhaps I’ll give it another closer look, but this video doesn’t mention them at all.
this rule is a moddified one from the explores of catan expansion i think, house rule, if you get no resource from a roll that isnt a 7 2x in a row choose one of 2 cards from the hex tiles with correlating number for the dice
Hi ma'am Can you please guide me 1. Do we place 2 settlements and 2 roads wherever we want when we start the game without rolling dice or is it just 1 settlement n 1 road ?. 2. Initially,we get resource cards depending on the hex of 2 settlements or 1 settlement ? 3. Once we roll dice and get 7, after placing it on a number which has settlement or city which stops other players from getting resources when the respective number is rolled, when or how do we keep it back to the desert after discarding half of the cards from everyone and taking the card from another player? 4. Though a city can help to get more resources, wouldn't we lose victory points if we remove one settlement to place a city? Eg: there were 2 settlements and 1 city, now to place one city more I'll have to remove 1 settlement, so victory points be now 1 for settlement, 4 for 2 cities. 5 points in total instead of 6 points
I put the numbers random, by putting them in a cup, shake them up and placing them from top down. If two number are next to each other one goes back in the cup and keep going.
This game is far better without player trading. Because you can't turn off player trading in the online versions of the game, I came up with a series of strategies to punish people for trading excessively. It's loads of fun... for me at least.
Can’t seem to find a definitive answer. I understand that when someone initially steals the longest road they get those two points plus an additional two for victory points. What happens when someone steals the longest road from the second person that originally stole it? Does the second person keep their two victory points or do they lose all four?

Thanks for this: clear, calm, good pace, not hysterical and hyper toned like the other UA-cam channels. Very much appreciated.

You make this game clearer than most instructors out there. Thanks much!

Thanks for your comment! I'm glad it was helpful and I hope you enjoy it the next time you play - it's a super fun game.
I’ve just bought Catsn and I’ve watched your video before opening the box ! Thanks , a big help

This was perfect to teach my 12 year old son. Thanks very much
The only video I could fine online that was actually helpful and well explained! Thank you!

I recommend you also randomize the numbers and port, especially if you play Catan alot
This was super helpful. Thank you!!
This was soooo helpful! Thank you for the very clear instructions. We are about to dive in. :)

I guess people can play it however they like, but the original rule is to only take the ressources surrounding ur 2nd settlement 😇
Great! A complex game with a simple to understand video! Good job!]
Great job on this explanation!

You can maritime trade
I don’t recommend buying the expansion boxes, from my personal experience they weren’t the best and the base game was far better

Your starting resources you only get from the 2nd settlement you placed not both spots placed.
I've never played it that way but I can see the challenge that would bring to the game, for sure
@@taminggames1980 That's the way it says in the game instructions :)
:O wait I've also never heard of it played that way!

I've learnt alot for a beginner. Thanks alot for the video 👍
Thank you! Best instructions Ive found.
Thank you so much for creating this video!
You are so welcome!
This is such a fun game, but it’s such a pain when trying to explain it to someone who can’t pay attention for one second, speaking of my brother.
Great video! Havent played in years ❤️
You should play! Thanks for watching :)

I looked in the instructions and these pieces are referred to as “9 harbor pieces” in the list of included game pieces.

Thanks for pointing out the guaranteed way to get wood!😂
this helped so much

Question :
House rules , on the robber on an empty hex. Do you collect resources on after every roll until the robber moves ? Or only collect once ?

What does the red place in 3 player setup guide mean ??
Does the first ever settlement we placed... It is include to the 10 VP that we need to collect?
Yes, you start 2 points.
Just FYI this video deviates in places from the instructions that come with the game
Try using a 12 sided dice . Move the robber on numbers 1 & 7
Thank you
Thanks for watching and for your comment!
❤
Please help. Can u place a starting settlement right on a 2 for 1 tile? Or 3 for 1 tile?
I guess so but you would like building it in the middle to get more resources
Do you have an all time favorite game??
This place looks like the same place they play Beer and Board games
Don't u also have a rock climbing channel?
development cards: that's face Down! (caption said Up).
Otherwise, a very nice walkthrough, thanks!
You're too cute☺☺
