In this video I outline how to use Alcryst on Maddening in terms of classes, upgrades, passives, etc.
This guide is aimed at the early/midgame. I will be making an advanced guide that covers emblem rings and endgame unit builds.
The only thing Alcryst puts down harder than himself is any enemy he double procs Luna on. Possibly my favourite archer in FE history, NGL, he's just such a fun unit to use when he gets rolling.
He's in my top 5. My favorite is Noire as Sniper with Lethality. "Blood and THUNDER!!!" lol

Alcryst hitting Luna and a critical is like launching nuclear warheads at enemies
He's just as reliable at melting enemy armor as mages are with a brave bow

It's kind of absurd how simple and good Alcryst's personal skill is in a game where most got neutered into giving piddling hit/avoid boosts or are very conditional. It's such a good buff for such an easy condition to meet.
Edit: And exploding annoying and important flyers from across the map with Lyn is both useful and funny to me.
Using Al on my second playthrough. He definitely is out of the box better that Etie.. one could say running him has been pure upside

The developers carefully designed Alcryst so that his usefulness as a unit is inversely proportional to his self-esteem.
Alcryst is the pure definition of hard carry for my current maddening run. Imagine Alcryst with Lyn max lv20 bond, insane starting speed at 32 pre-speedtaker, doubling foes with brave bow, 51% crit rate, 4 chances per atk to proc both luna and crit. Pure insanity!!!
Also, Luna has a potential to proc 5 times if you use Lyn’s Astra Bow with him. Even 30 dex x5 chances you’re gonna get at least one.
That was some I discovered on my own. Which was really cool. Lyn as a emblem has insane synergy with Luna.

He's the best archer in my books. His class Tireur d'elite is unique to only him, but he has easily the best passive. If you can double enemies and you get double Luna procs, you can defeat even armor guys in one turn. He also has beautiful synergy with Lyn, where the Astra Storm can proc Luna on each hit. He's very worth it to run.
Alcyrst may insult himself WAY more than necessary, but he knows that he’s the best Archer in the game. He has LUNA!
Finally the best unit in the game. ( not actually just my favorite)
Alcryst is a late-bloomer with a decent showing until then because the game likes to toss fliers at you.
Once Alcryst hits lv 5 with Tireur d’élite, you get the Eirika engraving, and Ivy learns Speedtaker so you can put Lyn in Alcryst, his DPS massively shoots up, with Crit Luna actually being a very common occurrence. He’s one of the very few units who can consistently one-round the statball promoted enemy units in the maddening endgame. Even armors fall to him.
Lyn on him also gives a lot of map control, as you can chunk (or even outright kill) trouble enemy units like mages, or thieves running away with your loot.
Absolute beast. I've never had an archer be an MVP of a map before, but he did it back to back on Maddening on chapter 16 and Lynn's paralogue. A lot of that had to with shooting down flying squads with Seadall dancing for him while splitting the rest of the kills pretty evenly, but still.
Might want to do a short video on some cheap, mid game skills to pick up. I noticed half your units had mentorship on them, which is something I'm going to try now as well. Also didn't realize upgrades to skills discounted if you picked up the earlier version of them, which would've helped a lot as I've basically been hoarding all my SP.
Loved using Alcryst, I normally drop all the archers straight away in FE games for various reasons and just use Magic/Thrown weapons for Range. He has enough Str/Speed along with Luna to kill most enemies and then you can Canter him onto evasion tiles or out of 1 range where he has enough defense to dodge/take at hit if needed. Great with Lyn, but so are many characters...
Don’t forget about the mini bow. I haven’t used it extensively but I have pulled it out in a pinch for that counter damage
Engraved +5 mini bow is underrated and is great for when a lot of enemies around you only have range 1 weapons. You can also bait out range 2 and range 3 with your longbow.

I’m using Al + Lyn on my first Maddening run and I’m about done (Ch22). He’s an absolute beast. I slapped Canter and Dex+4 on him and put on a Killer Bow + 5 w/Eirika engrave. He just one rounds everything between Luna and crits (like explained in video)
Alcryst struggles to 1-shot non-birds initially, but definitely by mid-game gets to where he can killed or heavily maim most non-armors. When you give him Lyn, he becomes incredible. Killer bow is a great early match for him because not only does it give up to +40 crit, but also is very cheap to upgrade compared to other bows. Its a much better investment than upgrading a Silver until you can afford to get and upgrade a brave.
The etie shade gives me life 😆 one of my fave units in the whole game, love giving him a maxed killer bow with corrin engrave.
I used Etie on my first play through and she underwhelmed me so much I didn’t use any archers in my second and then after seeing some of your vids I decided to use Al for my third and yeah he’s.. so good

Etie and Jade definitely are those units though lol. Jade is just terrible, an armor with mediocre def, low build, and all the armor problems. What do you get for that? 2-3 more res? If it wasn't for Louis, I could see someone seeing Jade and thinking ALL armors suck.
Etie isn't much better. Sure, you can give her favoritism and get a meh unit, but give the same treatment to almost anyone else and get a better unit. And she's not even a good character either, so I don't get why anyone wouldn't bench her asap.
To each their own though, and on hard or below, you can use anyone in any class and stomp the game, so it's up to player choice really... I just don't get it lol

Alcryst is slower to get going through early/ midgame as brute high str warriors like Kagetsu, Panette, or even Etie throughout Solm. But on later stages in the game when his dex is high enough, and he gets Brave Bow his ceiling is higher.
I'm on my second maddening playthrough and I've used my first master seal on him both times now. I get Alcryst before doing both Anna's and Jean's paralogues.
Imo no need to inherit build on him early game, I used him consistently once I got him (only left him off the team in order to train up weaker units) and his build growth tracks well with weight of the weapons you get for free (like fogado coming equipped with a silver bow). By endgame, he’ll pretty much always match the build of the brave bow/legendary bow without you doing anything. Plus I never had an issue with him one-rounding enemies with the weapons available to him. Agree with the video, solid unit with low investment, and pops off if you do invest in him. Love this lad. I have to admit though, things get rough for him mid-game Maddening if you're not keeping his weapon refined high enough. That extra 5 Crit at +5 is worth it. Also, plan out his supports so he can ensure his crits. Camilla engrave is a godsend to make his crit build super strong early and decent for most of the game, and her Decisive Strikes+ is absolutely worth it to ensure kills. He's a great reason to respect and use Secret Books. I know people want to build for Luna with a brave bow, but just treat it as a cherry on top on his Crit build since you don't have to do anything extra to get the high dex for both Crit and Luna.
This guy right here, is constantly getting MVP by the end of each fight. Fire Emblem need to chill on the flying enemies on Maddening so my girl Jade can get one in. 😅
Forgot to add, I've been running the Claude Bond Ring on him that gives +1 range to bows if at full hp.
Leif's pretty low in general, but I'd say Alcryst makes better use of him than most people. Adaptability gives Coverts +20 Avoid so he can enemy phase with +80 Avo from an avoid tile. Luna can proc on each hit of engage skill and you can sometimes just snag 2000 gold if it kills. The emblem rings Alcryst really wants are contested and he's less strength reliant since he's mostly effective hitting fliers, so finding some actual use for Leif is nice. At the least it's a solid option while you're low on rings.
I put a Claude S bond ring on him after I got a lucky roll. The extra range makes him even more of a menace.
I haven't tried with Alcryst, but rushing Canter (I know great on everyone) seems really good for an archer. Long bow and be five spaces away?
Snipers are the Alcryst at home.
Alcryst is the Warrior at home.
And Bow Knight is the weird Sniper frat bro that graduated from college 4 years ago but still lives on campus, despite taking no classes or not working at the college.
He's cool. But he has almost definitely killed a man via hazing, and you probably should avoid the parking structure he loiters in at night.
Personally I prefer Alcryst because it’s like super obvious as how to use him, and he has a lot of supports with other units I like. Ivy, Diamant, Celine etc
But “he can take a hit better” then this other archer seems more like cope then an actual benefit.

Etie being 1 shot has nothing to do with poor positional play. Etie should be able to survive combat with enemy mages/archers but her poor speed makes her die to literally anything that attacks her. Allowing Alcryst to counter attack and kill or put damage on an enemy is a huge advantage that you SHOULD USE instead of tucking your archer in the corner
Yeah you aren’t supposed to get hit in those circumstances either tbh, but if that’s how you use your archers more power to you I guess.

I get you love a character and want it to be good; I've done the same. But just accept it doesn't perform nearly as good as others 💀💀💀
He can counter at 1 range with minibow just gotta be sure to have someone around to trade it to him after he attacks with a stronger bow, and if you get him Claude's S rank bond ring it gives minibow 1-2 range which effectively fixes his only weakness.

alcryst has literally carried me through the whole damn game (for some reason byleth just makes him insane lol)
I put a lvl 12/1 alcryst on a lvl 20+ map with Lyn, ready to babysit him, and walked away with a lvl 12/5. Double longbow is so absurdly safe it needs no training wheels. Luna is one of the few talents that scales, so he can punch up and score Luna kills that no other under leveled hero can get.
His real MVP moment was in sigurds DP, dealing with the money sages in the corner. Seven rez crystals on 2 sages that could eat my entire army. Enter Alear locking them in with ice cheese, while Alcryst filled the boloney sage with a dozen longbow arrows.

You can't underestimate Alcryst's ability to randomly explode people with Crit Lunas if you're willing to use the Time Crystal as an offensive tool. Player phase focused games are good opportunities for archers to shine. It's a bit sad that the other archers in the game are kinda meh.
They are not as bad as you think. Their problem is archer and sniper have awful bases. Reclassing to warrior will help them massively.

I think fogado is pretty good just not as good as Alcryst, Etie on the other hand is another story
@@louiesatterwhite3885 c bows allows steel bow, killer bow, longbow and even radiant bow. Units with innate bow pref go up to b getting silver bow which is arguably worse than steel bow. All you are missing out on is brave bow which is a shame but not earthshattering.
Dex is not very important each point of Dex only gives 1hit and 0.5 crit(arguably you are better of selling secret books than using them). 30 is more than enough Dex but you probably won't hit cap anyway and if it really bothers you, you can reclass back to sniper if you hit cap at a point in the game where the classes base stats are much less impactful.
Fogado is very good when reclassed to Warrior
Alcryst is really strong from start to finish and is the best bow user overall imo. Warriors being good make it so don't need to run 2 bow only type of units and mages with excalibur and Elwind deal with Fliers pretty well to be honest. I don't think his main competitor Fogado is bad Luna is just really strong and fights him on that role but I think Fogado on fliers or other classes has a lot of potential due to high speed growth and okay BLD growth.
Fogodo hit like a truck on my playthrough especially with a radiant bow and enough inherent build and speed to double with heavy bows but he falls off hard late cause of his low dex cap and couldn’t hit shit even with hit +10 to +20.
Wouldn't lunar brace also be a good fit, if you're willing to bite the enormous sp gain?

I only run one archer and Alcryst is it.
Alcryst (Leif), Kagetsu (Eirika), and Diamant(Ike) where my go to wall units in late game maddening maps and Alcryst would often survive longer than the other two, That said, Leif, Pair Up, Lifesphere+ was a meme build i did on a dare, that worked surprisingly well.
I feel like archers are one of the few units that are relatively cheap to make use of (minus etie) they aren't going to hurt anything but fliers and there are fliers in this game that are so god damned tanky that being able to gain damage bonus against them is a must if you want everyone to survive.
the only investment alcryst needs is lunar brace. lets him shoot into 0-9 damage projections and kill
his dex is too good to need a brave bow as well, at 45% luna proc chance 4 shots isn't going to make a huge difference, better off giving him more crit
I haven't really had a chance to try it, but does adaptability work on Leif!archers? Because it seems like if so it'd be pretty good on Alcryst. Adaptability vantage allows close range follow up, quadhit means you can proc Luna up to 4 times on an enemy, and covert unit means you might get 1k gold for it too. The bonus build, especially early game may be helpful. Overall, it's potentially pure upside.
think Leif would be good on him? along with a long and mini bow, if yes what skills would suit this?

I used him in maddening to kill all the dragons in Tiki´s paralogue and his speed, strenth and dex. scaleted so damn hard he now basically one rounds anything not wearing heavy armor.

The best thing with Alcryst is because his Dex can go as high or higher than 40, so he can proc Luna more than he will not. His Strength isn't the best but putting Draconic Hex on him will always make him useful for the team.
The best build in maddening is Alcryst with Lucina with Lyn's Bow Focus and Lineage. You can use Lyn but Alacrity might be wasted on him. Lyn is better on high speed characters like Chloe on Griffin Knight or Kagetsu.

I’ve always thought Alcryst was crazy bad. Mine must be stat screwed. My Alcryst is lvl 2 on his second seal Tireur d’elite and still only has 21 speed while yours is lvl 12 on his first and has 22 speed. How has my guy missed over half of his speed lvl ups lmao.

Little strange to use up a skill slot on Speed, I feel. On my last Mad/Classic run, the only thing Alcryst didn't 1HKO were late-game Griffin Knights. But, to solve that, I put him back on Lyn (was running Claude ring for 3 range Brave Bow slaughtering) and he quadded everything in the world. In fact, I didn't even have skills for my Alcryst on this run besides Canter and Mentorship and he still carried like the absolute Chad he is. It was actually really difficult for me to think of skills to put on him besides Canter.
The only thing I might have done is give him a Speed Wing to push him over a speed threshold in the mid-game. But, on the other than that, Canter + Brave Bow (+3), + Lyn + Seadall dances = one man army Alcryst.
If you run Lyn on most units they can get away without using speed skill.

"Pure/huge upside" has basically become a meme phrase on this channel cause of a few comments and I kind of love it. Either way, watching these videos while stuck in bed with my sprained ankle has been pure upside.
I might give Alcryst a shot next time. I always end up dropping him for Etie just because his wimpy personality bothers me that much, but Luna is really strong. I just wish more of the non-exclusive classes got cool skills like Luna and Sol.

say what you want about his self hate, but he isn't a coward , if anything he will jump into the front lines had Diamant not keep a leash on him. And if Diamant didn't stop him he would've strangled Ivy with his bare hands.
also he isn't a shut in, he actually loves people and rather adventurous and experimental if given chance .
Jean reclassed outshines him with the dex and str GROWTH
Jean requires a ton of overinvestment to get going and doesn't get Luna though, so some tradeoffs :)
@@IcedCoffeeGaming yeah, alcryst has better build too for silver bows, waiting on a new tier character tier list, im pretty sure ur recent runs have changed ur mind about a couple of characters. also over investing now is super ez because of well so it's not that much of an issue unless u plan to have multiple units omegastack
I know you don't like the DLC but it could be fun to watch you do a playthrugh with it, maybe impose some challenge on yourself to compensate. (iron man? only "bad" units?)

My Etie blew away enemies my first playthrough (classic, hard, no skirmishes/dlc) maybe I got lucky but her strength was INSANE and I ended giving her Lynn and made her a warrior. Maps were cleared in abundance
Better using killer or brave bow on him? If Lunar procs will it apply to all hits?
Luna procs for only one hit at a time, but each hit has a chance to apply
@@louiesatterwhite3885 Okay thanks. My Alcryst hasn't really "popped off" yet and lunar wasn't seeming that great. Maybe he's just not reached that point yet. For archers, I've been having my joy with Fogado. With the radiant bow he's been hitting like a truck
@@sonictelephone1526 yeah, alcryst's Luna needs his dex to get up to be reliable. Thankfully he does have a 70% dex growth. In the meantime he's a very good crit archer

Can someone please help me why the Brave Bow is better than Silver Bow? I didn't want to risk my material to craft it as the stat is much lower than my +3 Silver Bow
If you run Lyn/Speedtaker on Alcryst he can quad with brave bow and trigger Luna, but you should keep the +3 silver bow and make a new silver bow into a brave so you don't lose your silver bow upgrades :)

His Magic growth is the only thing that holds him back IMO. Radiant Bow with his low Magic growth will eventually render him unable to one-round armored units even with Luna. Also, Sniper class +Crit though not as strong as Luna and having lower bases, is still very strong so there are quite a few archery candidates other than him like Fogado (which is an excellent on Sniper).
He doesn't need magic growth. Put Eirika on him if you can't afford inheriting lunar brace, and have him use a brave bow. He can one round stat capped generals with a single Luna proc, no crits necessary
