Dumpster Dresser- AMAZING RESTORATION of a trashed mid century dresser
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 вер 2022
- I couldn't believe my eyes when I got a message about a discarded mid century style dresser literally sitting roadside for garbage collection that day. While not every piece thrown out is worthy of or able to be salvaged, I decided to drive a half hour each way to go check this one out. Stinky, dirty, legless.
Four days of hot, sweaty work (summers in the valley of Nova Scotia are crazy humid and hot) later, I can't even believe it's the same piece. I'm thinking we are going to keep this one for ourselves to use in our living room.
I DID however discover a manufacturers error AT THE VERY END of not only the work, but editing this very video. I was crushed to realize they had put two handles on the wrong drawers, covered the mistake with toner, and because I simply took each handle off during the refinishing process and numbered them to go back on the same drawers, I didn't catch the error until it was pretty much too late. My friends Jim & Cindy from @FurnitureWarriors reminded me that mint error coins are often worth more. Maybe it's the same with furniture?? Hahaha! One can only hope!

What a wonderful job you did saving this piece of furniture! I am with the other commenters who said if you hadn’t mentioned it, I wouldn’t have noticed the ‘mistake’. It is such a beautiful piece now that NO ONE will notice or care. I am a quilter and have to stop myself from pointing out ‘mistakes’ in my work that no one else ever sees (including other quilters). You took a roadside piece of trash and turned it into a gorgeous piece of furniture that anyone would be proud to have in their home. Well done! (Also love the bunny rescue)!
Linda has said everything I would say if I were as articulate as she. This piece is stunning! Also, I hope and pray all the little rescue bunnies are doing well. Thank you for this video!
I know exactly what you mean being a quilter myself. We do seem to find fault rather than the actual beauty!
I agree. I understand how you feel as someone who aims to do an excellent job but I looked closely and couldn't see anything
that detracted from its beauty.
I totally agree. We are, our worse critics
Ha ha. I just said the same thing before reading all the comments. great minds think alike
That is a stunning restoration. Only you would notice the "error" and in any case it is how the manufacturer made it. That is part of the history of the piece.
Agreed!! It’s part of the history, and if you hadn’t mentioned it, I doubt many would have noticed. I looked for it and didn’t! GREAT JOB!!! I was sad this was over so quickly. What a stunning transformation. I hope your discovery doesn’t completely overshadow what you accomplished.
You said exactly what I was going to say. It’s the history of the piece. The fact that it was even noticed at all shows how an AWSOME true professional knows something is not flawed but off. Then she states the discovery before the reveal. This woman is a true GOLDEN professional💥you rarely find any more.
So true about the handle placement telling a historical story. I wonder what happened? Did some carpenter have a bad day? I'm making up all kinds of stories in my brain.
I like this comment a lot. Many times items are sought after based on manufacturing goofs. You did an amazing job, really, beautiful work!
I apologize, I can’t see / notice the mistake. I consider myself a perfectionist, I am sorry you felt the issue was egregious, I understand the feeling. Please don’t be too hard on yourself. This is now a beautiful piece.
We are our own worst critics. You did something amazing with literal trash. Give yourself the grace and kindness that you would give others.❤❤❤
Thank you so much for watching!
You my dear are a perfectionist!!! No one is ever going to even notice that "mistake", wood grains are always a little different so be sooo proud of this save and restoration!
Guilty as charged! 😊 Thank you so much for watching!
I can’t even see the “mistake” LOL
Don’t be so hard on yourself! I would buy this restored piece over a new one any day of the week. You have a great eye for detail….🧐🧐
Angie, stop being so hard on yourself! Your work is amazing. All wood is going to vary from piece to piece. It is to be celebrated.
P.s. I think the piece looks great as is.
Honestly I still couldn't see the "mistake" on the handles, even after you mentioned it. The dresser is gorgeous and you have given it a new life. I'm so perplexed about the weird plastic grain thing on the top; the veneer underneath was gorgeous and I'm so happy you peeled that other thing off. It's absolutely beautiful and it will have a new life now. Also....thanks for the work you do with the bunnies. A few years ago I had a family of wild bunnies living in my back yard and it was so much fun to watch them grow up.
Gah, seeing the plastic horror pull off was the best!
I'm with you. I stopped the video staring at the handles and I still don't see it, LOL!
In the center drawers the light streak is so small, nobody will notice. Chalk it up to learning new things. Stop beating yourself up!! It came out beautiful.
In the middle row, the top handle was installed on the bottom, and the bottom on the top. If you imagine that diagonal pale streak on the bottom right on top, it would align with the streak on the middle handle where it fades off.
I’m even more of a perfectionist: I love the gradations on the left column of drawers, and think they should be in the center as a focal point!
As a child of the '60s, I've NEVER been a mid-century furniture fan. I always preferred antiques, even as a little girl! But this is drop-dead gorgeous. Well done!
I'll take that as high praise then! Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Absolutely beautiful! You are a perfectionist, but most of us are so impressed we just drool in awe.
Holy cow, wow! This looks amazing! It reminds me of high end exotic wood furniture from Indonesia. You are such a talented craftsman. Part of your talent is that you are a perfectionist (so am I), but I honestly think if you hadn't pointed it out, no one, or very few, would have noticed. It came out quite stunning. Excellent job!
Same here! I grew up with this type of furniture and never had a taste for it. Until recently, my parents still had their MCM furniture and it was in really good shape for being close to 70 years old. These past few years I've come to appreciate the design element with MCM and I think she really did a wonderful job at restoring this piece.
Holy moly, that is beautiful grain. I had no idea that was there! Stunning. Simply stunning work.
Thank you very much!! I appreciate that! 😊
Angie don't be so hard on yourself. I'm looking at the reveal and every handle looks individual and beautiful. They look great right where they are. You did a fabulous job. I hope all the little rescues are back to good health soon, especially the little guy who's fighting the big fight. You're amazing to do such wonderful work with the fur babies.
Aww, thank you , love!
@ Emer Henry - I agree ! 👍
me too!
Just gorgeous ain't it!!!!
It's still amazing. I don't see the problem.
How nice to see someone appreciating & value other’s work enough to make it better than found! Great job.
Thank you very much! 😊
Looks great as is. Fellow perfectionist here-LEAVE IT BE.
I did. 😄I actually fell in love with the flaw and kept the piece. 😊
Had you not mentioned the handles, I would not have noticed. Looks fantastic as always
You’re such a pro.. Also I think the handles being “out of place” actually looks good 🙂
@Modern Makeovers I agree! Gives it a “uniqueness”
I agree, I like the way the handles look
I only watch 2 furniture restoration channels, both Canadian. Great to see @Modern Makeovers in the comments here!
Thank you so much :-)
You are probably the only one who’d notice. It doesn’t diminish the beauty of the piece ❤️
In some cultures imperfections are a mark of true beauty.
This is beautiful.
Thank you very much! 😊
No one would have ever noticed that “error” and for you to be bothered by it shows just how much of a perfectionist you really are! I think it looks absolutely stunning and it looks like a brand new very high end piece of furniture. You did an amazing job as always. I also noticed you decided to keep those green vases you picked up at the yard sale after. Good choice on keeping them and keeping their color 💚
Musty smell, at least with solid wood pieces, can be ironed out. Literally ironed. I have a small table that started smelly musty (British homes can be damp....we need a dehumidifier) and I took it apart and ironed it after giving it a scrub. You can take your time with the iron, because you need to get the heat deep enough into the pores of the wood to kill the fungus. A steamer might also work, but obviously you don't really want to add more moisture if you can help it. Anyways, it took me about 45 minutes to iron every surface and, 6 months later, it still just smells like fresh wood. Maybe that will help you, or others, dealing with mold/mildew/musty smells in solid wood.
Very cool tip!
Thank you for mentioning the name of the bunny rescue - I found their website and donated a little. I have a lot of respect and awe for volunteer-run rescue organizations. It’s a lot of work, dedication and expense to give these little guys a chance, and that’s absolutely worth supporting. ❤️
Thank you so much for that! They're a fantastic organization. ❤️
Quit beating your self up Angie! You saved/rescued a fabulous piece of furniture. How people can throw away things like this is baffling to the mind! And hurt baby or any animal is just incomprehensible!😢❤🎉
When an artist starts a project they usually have an idea of what that piece will look like when they're done with it (certainly what they want it to look like) - whatever medium that happens to be. When a piece is complete and parts of the whole deviate from the artists vision it can be incredibly frustrating. Regardless of if the finished product is beautiful or not - it simply does not match what the artist had in mind (for whatever reason) and that can be a letdown.
Honestly. I never would have noticed the “mistake.” Beautiful job!
Perhaps she can paint in darker stripes on the handles to match?
@@Ben4149 There is only one thing to do, take them off. ☹
Same here ! If she haven't said it, I wouldn't have noticed it...
@Steen Pedersen let those handles here they are, thing no need to be perfect, it already had a second life for many years, I hope !
Good GOD you turned that thing into a masterpiece. I can see the handle swap since you pointed it out but I'm not kidding here, the only impression I got at the reveal was how you turned something I would literally have made barf noises at into an absolutely stunning piece of furniture. That thing was mindblowing beautiful in the end.
Same here... as an artist, I "pick" at my work and I get why you would always see it, but know that this piece is absolutely GORGEOUS - AS IS!
YOU are by far the very BEST on UA-cam in your genre. YOUR VIDEOS ARE EXHILARATING!
Wow, thank you!
You are so hard on yourself. This turned out beautiful, and the handles look good as is. Another fine job.
Gorgeous. I'm a quilter and sometimes patch piece work doesn't always match up perfectly. I have learned that this is what gives the textile an authentic, hand crafted distinction. Some call it the "character of the quilt." I have come to peace with some imperfection in my quilts. In your final reveal, I looked at the handles and couldn't see any obvious flaw. I admire your integrity with your craft. Sometimes what is forgiven actually enhances your final piece. Also...your furry friends, thank you for saving those little sweeties.
Im a mid-century diehard fan, what you did here is fabulous, Frank Lloyd Wright would be so proud of you! Well Done.
WOW!!! This is, hands-down, the BEST dresser restoring I have ever seen. Gorgeous!
Thanks so much 😊
It's amazing what a talented artist can do with someone's "garbage." Awesome job!
+
If it makes you feel any better, I was trying to look hard for the “mistake” and couldn’t find it even though you told us about it.
Beautiful restore!! Well done.
Same, I still don't know what the mistake is 🤣
Can't see any mistake at all. looks great to me!
Thank you so much for watching!
Don't cry! This piece has a story. Perfectly imperfect. Like all of us!
Thank you so much! 😊
You're an artist, and you honour the original craftspeople. They are labours of love
Thank you very much! 😀
This is yet another beautiful restoration. I can't notice the "error" even after watching the video multiple times, and trying to find it! But I also understand we are our own worst critic. I think it's beautiful, and think everyone else will too.
I think the middle top and middle bottom should have been exchanged?
Saving it from the landfill was the best thing ever and the results are fabulous. I enjoy watching when you keep all the polls with the furniture, and you keep it looking like a classic that it is. Many people don't keep grandma's furniture but that is your style and ours who are keeping your channel going. A job well done again and again.
Love it just the way it is. The different tones give the dresser character
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
I personally do not like this style of furniture (just my taste), but i audibly gasped when you showed the final result, because it looks like such a polished, beautiful piece of furniture with history and so much love for the material. I also like how you presented it and how well everything fits together. I am at awe of your skill and you brought this to shine. While it might not be my taste, i can absolutely see the craftmanship and beauty of this piece. You let it sing.
Same. I'm not a fan of mid-century furniture personally, but I always enjoy watching people restoring them and giving them new life. And this piece turned out amazing!
Unique looking piece, Angie' I grew up during the mid=century and have never seen drawer handles like that. As usual, you did another fantastic makeover. The bunnies were absolutely adorable. I hope they all find wonderful forever homes soon. You have such a good soul. We enjoy your efforts and wish you well, always. -- Dave & Amy
I’m not seeing any problems or obvious issues with the drawer handles. All I see is gorgeous! You did amazing work. Let it be the way it is. It’s perfect.
Thank you! Cheers!
Gorgeous!!! I wouldn't notice a mistake and still didn't after the reveal. Impeccable!
Thank you very much! 😊
My mom used to always tell me "don't let perfect be the enemy of good" and I think that applies here. Any time we make something we notice the errors, but other people don't. Don't let one tiny little mistake ruin the whole amazing transformation. Especially since it wasn't even your mistake!
_enemy [of the] good_
typo?
@@al.the. yes! Thank you for spotting that!
@@SLorraineE LOL.. I thought the saying was spot on. til @al the al pointed it out....🤣🤣🤣
I love that saying. I’m gonna use it on a pillow ❤
Oh I really like that! Thanks so much for watching and for sharing! 😊
Amazing! You're too hard on yourself!
You breathed new life into it...Beautiful!❤
I'm so glad you like it! 😊
Classic and timeless beauty
Thank you kindly! 😊
This came out STUNNING 🤩 Most of us would have left it there to be trash, or painted it. The time, attention, and care you put into this piece to show it’s beauty is admirable. You are a true artist. I would have never noticed the issue with the handles, they are each unique and beautiful. Thank you for sharing the rescue bunny adventure and I hope they’re doing great!
Thanks so much 😊
I didn’t notice the error, even after looking for it 😂 But idc, your pieces are always special and high end. You’re the best!
You sure are..
Never perfect so lighten up Ms. Bunny!
I looked and looked and couldn’t see the mistake! It’s ABSOLUTELY amazing!
I'm so glad you like it!
It's stunning and you did an amazing job. Noone would ever have noticed it if you hadn't commented on it. You're a perfectionist!
I am indeed!! 😊
I actually like the “flaw” in the pattern. Who ever buys this has this great story about it. And to be honest, most folks wouldn’t even notice it.
I actually kept this one for myself - it's in our living room. Thanks so much for watching!
Fantastic job and don't worry about those drawer handles, I doubt anyone would notice or worry about them and I don't think they take anything away from the finished result.
This piece looks fabulous. The 60s were a time of Swedish design furniture which never ages. What a stunning job.
Thank you so much for watching!
Super Hero!!!🦸🏻
Saving furniture!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Saving bunnies!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Fabulous makeover!!!😎
Only u would see a manufacturer defect!
Another Save from landfill
Bravo!❤️🥰💋
Thank you! 😊
Oh Angie - as someone who is also very sensitive, my heart aches for you. 🤗 Here's a slice of reality: I would never have thought to look for anything if you hadn't made that "confession" just before the reveal. 🤔As it is, I STILL didn't detect any glaring differences.🤭 As we all know, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and this dresser is stunningly beautiful. 😍 You are already marked for sainthood as an animal lover and bunny rescuer. ❤😉 Try not to invest so much of your heart into these pieces of furniture. It's not good for you. 🥰 Life advice from an old lady. 😜😁 P.S. Love the green vase!! Good call on not painting them (yet...). 🤣
The term "mental spackle" comes to mind. That's what we say in my house when something doesn't turn out exactly how we want it to. This piece is breathtaking. What a gift to be able to revive a dresser that is vastly superior to the modern day fast fashion type of furniture we see everywhere. You completely honored it. And to be honest, it's kind of charming that the manufacturer messed up. Adds to the specialness...
Thank you very much Kate!
I’m not with the other commenters. I still can’t see the problem with the handles. What a transformation! A really beautiful piece. Amazing job.
I'm so glad you like it! Thank you! 😊
It’s perfectly imperfect, which is part of its beauty. Even the faint burn mark adds to its personality. Real furniture that’s lived a full life before being brought lovingly back. I believe anyone would love to have this stunning piece of furniture with all its history in their own home. I would!
I actually fell in love with the flaw and kept this piece for our living room, so I agree with you completely. Thank you so much for watching!
This piece is beautiful! Don't sell yourself short. You are very talented and very meticulous and it shows in everything you do. Be proud of your work it's why you have so many loyal followers.💗💗💗
Thank you kindly Ann!
All I see is a stunning piece of furniture. Amazing!!
I want to thank you for all your hard work. I have learned so much from watching your videos. I applaud you for keeping up with this type of work, even when you have to put up with criticism and negative comments. I hope you know that there are so many of us out here that appreciate you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 🥰
Thank you so much for watching Kelley!
This is a gorgeous finished piece! Please don’t change anything about it. You refinished it so beautifully…amazing talent and attention to detail.
Oh I didn't change anything, I actually fell in love with the flaw and kept this piece for our living room. Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Infallibility is not a human option. The Flowing, glowing wood grain is very satisfying to my eye.
Thanks so much for watching!
Honestly I love it! 100% as is. As an artist myself -- we look too closely at our work and creations - often to the detriment of the piece if we mess with it. You did another amazing service here and the result is gorgeous.
It’s a beautiful piece after you refinished it. What an amazing job. You know your stuff for sure. Nobody will ever guess there’s a mistake. Also thanks for helping out those rabbits!💕
Thanks so much for watching!
It's beautiful. Hope the bunnies are all well, happy and healthy. ThNks for having a heart for animals.
Yes they are, thank you for asking about them! ❤️
Hi from UK. I honestly wouldn't have noticed. The beauty in this piece of furniture surely overcomes these little mistakes. You are a brilliant restorer. I love to watch your videos. Keep them coming. ❤
I definitely will! I'm so glad you're enjoying them. 😀
I am a Quilter. I never point out my mistakes, which always occur. Then the mistake is what your eye sees. Don't worry about it. The piece was absolutely stunning!
Actually, as a quilter, I think those deep, rather square drawers would be perfect for fabric storage!
OK - a few things... 1. Wow - what a transformation!! I watched you do it and still can't believe how nice it turned out. 2. I think 97% of people would never notice the handle issue. I wouldn't have if you hadn't called attention to it. I don't think it detracts from the piece at all. 3.THANK you so much for your bunny rescue work! My niece has a domesticated rabbit and I have two wild rabbits that live in my back yard that I keep a careful watch over. They are wonderful creatures. 🙂
Maybe you see a mistake….I do not. I see an incredible piece of furniture. Thank you for rescuing this marvelous piece from oblivion.
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
I must say this makeover is stunning. Don't stress Angie, the piece is beautiful. Thanks to you.
Thank you so much!!
A stellar resto as always. I find it interesting that when these pieces were made they would stain and tint and conceal a lot of the grain patterns. Today we want to celebrate the color variations and natural grains and you do that so beautifully. Sending healing energy to wounded little bunny, be sure and let us now how they do.
What a beautiful job giving this old piece her life back again. You have a wonderful talent. 🩵
I really appreciate that, thank you! 😊
"It's not an error. It's a design element." I know that gets used as an excuse a lot of times but in this case I would embrace it. It's how the manufacturer put it together so it was their vision. Honestly, I wouldn't have noticed if you hadn't said anything and I think most people wouldn't either. This is a beautiful piece of work.
Thank you very much Lisa!
WOW!!! The dresser looks fabulous! I wasn't able to catch the handle problem. Excellent!
Thank you! 😊
Absolutely gorgeous. BETTER than new. wow
Ooo, watching you peel the top covering off was so satisfying. What a gorgeous piece. I would have never known or cared about the mix up with the handles. This was a magnificent furniture rescue. And an awesome bunny rescue too.
As a carpenter contractors daughter I have to say that there is nothing better that beautiful wood! Very well done!
Thanks so much!
You are always so thorough and address the structural integrity of each piece. I so very much appreciate your work. ♥️🌻♥️
Thank you so much!
It’s beautiful! Don’t feel bad that the manufacturers put it together wrong and the mistake was missed. The piece still looks wonderful and you did a great remake as well as kept it out of the dump!
Yes, I actually fell in love with the flaw and kept this piece for our living room. Thank you so much for watching! 😊
I haven't found a new channel to be obsessed with for ages. Your videos are sooooooooo calming. It's like visual ASMR.
I'm a new viewer and I was thinking the same exact thing about it being like ASMR!!
I think this piece is gorgeous, you did a wonderful job and I'd be proud to have a piece like this in my home!
Thank you so much!
It’s gorgeous! I love walnut ❤
Whoever threw this out would never believe it was the same dresser!!
Thank you so much! 😊
Sometimes we can't always be perfect Hardly anybody will probably even notice it It looks good
Thank you very much!
I love every one of your restorations. This one was exceptional. You also have a soothing voice and I love listening to you and learning so much from you. Haven't attempted any of the projects sitting in my basement and garage. Feel that I still need to learn so much and therefore love watching your UA-cam channel.
I'm so glad you're finding my content helpful! Best of luck when you do decide to give it a go. Thanks so much for watching!
Looks incredible!
Spectacular end result. WOW... the drawers are not noticeable.. and very few people will see the difference. It is gorgeous. Love it.
Thank you very much! 😊
Only a true artist like you would know that it was not as it should be. I just found your channel and I love your work and personality. Remember in life we have to give ourselves a little mercy. Blessings to you.
Welcome! I'm so glad you found me! Thank you so much for watching!
Girl, you are way too hard on yourself! This is stunning! I could feel your disappointment and it just hurt my heart. It's absolutely gorgeous. And THANK YOU for being so lovely and taking in these bunnies. I just adore bunnies, and seeing you get emotional made me tear up. You are an amazing human!
Thank you so much Melissa, I really appreciate that!
You did such a lovely job on this. I am not a mid century modern furniture enthusiast, but you have made me love this piece!! Great job!!!❤️👍🎉
What an exceptionally beautiful piece of furniture. The manufacturer's error you mention at the end is unnoticeable to most people.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you like it! 🙂
You did an amazing job on this old dresser. When you actually see some of these vintage mid-century furniture pieces redone properly, it reminds me of how beautiful they can be. Coming from a house with quite a number of these pieces, I am so grateful for your breakdown of the steps you took, from getting rid of the musty smell, to analyzing the pattern in the wood grain. These touches are often overlooked (at least in the filming process), and they are so vital to a professional quality finish. Watching these videos helps give me the knowledge and confidence to tackle these projects on an entirely different level than I had originally contemplated. I know painted furniture is all the rage, but for me, on a personal level, the perfection of nature is what makes my heart sing. Thank you. (I hope the bunnys are doing better.)❤
You're very welcome Karen! I'm glad you enjoy my content and find it helpful. 🙂
I’m not usually a mid century furniture lover, but this piece is stunning! If you hadn’t said anything, most of us would have just considered it part of the character. I know, we perfectionists are our worst critic. I do “fine” needlework and years ago if there was the slightest mistake I used to get really upset and bummed. I ripped it out and started over. Now l’m kinder and gentler in my older age. Consider the issue gives it character. It’s amazing you were able to keep it out of the landfill. Walnut has such beautiful grains and patterns. You were able to bring out the absolute best of the wood.
Love the bunny rescue intermission. Hopefully, all bunnies will pull through.
Thank you so much for watching Marie! 🐰
The way the wood grain flows through the piece made me go 'Wow' and replay that reveal several times over just to enjoy how gorgeous it looks. I am not someone who usually appreciates woodgrain (too much heavy teak in my childhood!) but this dresser is something special. Thank you for sharing the journey with us.
Wow, thank you! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
That piece is EXQUISITE! STUNNING!!!
I'm so glad you like it! 😊
I am so impressed that you didn't just paint and decoupage the piece. It is lovely.
I don't decoupage. 😉 Thanks for watching!
It is absolutely beautiful! What a talent. ❤
The legs are perfection. I think your perfect eye for detail sees the “mistake” but the casual observer its a georgeous finished product that anyone would be happy to purchase and will have a long expected new life. Fabulous restoration from the literal trash as always.
It's gorgeous, and if YOU hadn't noticed the manufacturer error, no one else would have either. It's a success!
Thank you so much for watching!
I didn’t even notice what you were talking about in the edit in between the reveal. I think you notice it because it’s what you do for a living but the rest of us just see a gorgeous piece of restored furniture. You did a wonderful job.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that! 😊
Wow! Don't be hard on yourself. Without you this piece would be in the landfill. Oddball drawers be damned, it is beautiful. Great job and keep up the great furniture and bunny work!
Once again amazing rescue - furniture + bunny! Glad to see the vase is still green.
I use to have bunnies myself, now I have 3 cats. The dresser came out very nice.
We have both. 😀
You did an excellent job and nobody but an expert would notice where you went "wrong".
Thanks for watching!
This episode is an emotional roller coaster! That you care so much about what is important to you to take on responsibility personally to want to correct the mistakes of others is pretty evident, from the bunny rescue to the concern you have about this gorgeous project. I would not have seen that error if you had not pointed it out, and once you did it still looks beautiful to me and is part of the story.
Thank you kindly Viki!
