Turning an Old VINTAGE HEADBOARD into a custom FIREPLACE??

  • I bought this, stored it for years, then tried to sell it, and then tried even giving it away. No one wanted it. Finally, I gave in to the fact that this was mine for good, and decided to repurpose it into a custom fireplace surround/mantle for a new relaxation room I'm creating for myself.
    I had to build a frame and front panel for the electric insert I bought, making sure to follow all of the recommended thresholds as outlined in the manual. Even though this isn't real fire, these inserts need room to properly vent. I tried to do this as economically as possible, using up scrap bits of plywood and MDF left over from other projects, and some solid walnut offcuts.
    While there are some things I'd probably do differently were I to do this all again, overall I'm please with it, and I'll be sure to send along updated photos of it once it's installed in the new room.

    The reason no one wanted the headboard is because it was clearly meant to be your fireplace. It is so satisfying to see your creative process and out-of-the-box thinking. The end result is beyond what I ever could have envisioned. So unique and beautiful. Thank you for sharing all of your talents with us.

    This really brings back memories. We never lived in a house with a fireplace, so for Christmas my Mum would remove the free-standing (no rails) bookcase headboard from one of the bedrooms and turn it into an ersatz fireplace for the "Rumpus Room". Since the headboard was returned to the bedroom after Christmas she did her transformation with brick patterned paper, a long board for a mantle shelf and the 1950's electric fireplace (the kind with red light bulbs and a little fans that to make the light flicker) that had traveled with us from house to house. A nice memory for Mother's Day. Thank you.

    One of the reasons I love your channel is how you don't give up on making a piece the most beautiful it can be. Your eye for detail gives your pieces so much elegance. I have said before, your videos are educational in the art of woodworking and restoring. It would be a privilege to have one of your furniture restorations in my home.❤ You're an artist Angie😊

    After your comment about pressed wood I'm starting to change my mind about it. I still heavily prefer solid wood but I now realize it's about understanding the purpose and using the right techniques to refinish them. 6:30

      @Abmotsad Місяць тому +6

      I used to feel the same way, but once I learned to veneer and laminate, I fully embraced high-quality plywoods and MDF. For some purposes, pressed wood is simply better. For instance, real wood is not as good as MDF for speaker cabinets.

    So cool!! We donated our son’s old bookshelf headboard to a local furniture flipper, who turned it into a mobile bar for a local restaurant!! Every time we go into town for an event, we always seek them out and tell the story again. You’re so creative and it looks just so good. Well done!!!

    I can’t emphasize enough, how happy and also relaxing it is to see your new video, Angie. For me it is late Sunday evening, right before the start of the new working week, and your videos help me relax and prep for a good night sleep. Writing this before even finishing the video, I know that the final result is going to be beautiful! Seeing a wreck being put back to life produces some kind of special furniture seratonin, I guess 😊

    That headboard was in my grandparent's bedroom. The little tables with legs spread to the sides. Anthurium plant on one of them. Orange curtains with those brown circles on them. I believe the same floof orange blanket on the foot end. We sleep under eiderdowns as it can get bloody cold here. You made it a modern statement. Love, love it. A bit of memory lane there

    My sister and I shared our parents’ hand-me-down headboard like this in the mid-70s. This definitely brought back some memories! What a neat repurposing and beautifully done as always.

    It took me back Angie - watching you work your magic on mid-century pieces. You have come so far since the sander attached to a vacuum with tape. I am so pleased for you 1🙂

    Just wanted to mention here that I recently rescued a little teak dresser from a container near my house! I patched some holes and oiled her up and all along I was thinking about how you've inspired me, Angie! It was my first time and it shows but I love it so much!

    Yes it’s awesome when you walk in at the right time. My son was able to get a new dresser for cheap because someone bought it and didn’t end up liking it and it just came in. Talk about timing. 👍⭐️

    Wow! That is one of the coolest transformations of any video on UA-cam. You have inspired me to take a beginner woodworking course . Presently my efforts only manage to sanding , staining or painting . I’m pleased with my efforts but your wonderful teaching style has encouraged to take on more projects . I also have to keep in mind enthusiasm and skill level are on the same page. Please keep up producing these wonderful videos of your talented work.
