Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot was once a child of a wealthy family that was bullied due to his short height, obese figure and bird-like nose. Often taunted, he had no friends, and instead flocked to the company of birds. Eventually, he inherited his family’s fortune and adopted the Penguin moniker. In turn, he began presenting himself as an intelligent, rich and sophisticated gentleman in a tuxedo. Behind the façade, he had become angry at the world, due to never having felt accepted. As a result, he took up crime as a means for gaining power and taking revenge on citizens of Gotham who had dared sneer at his appearance. From the way the Penguin is depicted here, Nathan Lane would've been a very good choice.
They were probably too "unrealistic" or just didn't fit with the dark tone that Nolan was going for.

I think they could have worked a toned down Penguin in as a crime lord and done with Riddler what they did with Joker. One more film between Dark Knight and Rises with these two in would have been great for me.
***** Maybe he just wanted to do villains that hadn't been done in the movies before, apart from Joker of course cause they have to have him. But if he just did all the same villains from the older movies, they might have been seen as remakes rather than original movies

Gotham doesn't really feel like a Batman show to me because:
1) No Batman (Bruce Wayne as a kid doesn't count)
2) The villains don't really look like traditional Batman villains
Also, if Gotham is a prequel to the Nolan movies, why doesn't it take place in the past? Why is it set in the present? That makes no sense.

Penguin is my favorite Batman villain
Love the Penguin and always did; comedic or otherwise (Devito's portrayal is too much for me though). He doesn't really seem to be as popular as some other Batman villains--sure, he's well-known, but people haven't seemed to have paid as much attention to him. Real shame because going off of this backstory/what the comics expand upon it, there's plenty of pathos to him. At least Gotham seems to be giving him some credit, albeit with a different backstory (Robin Lord-Taylor is the bomb by the way).

Yeah danys version is way too inaccurate. Gotham is definitely the best version and most accurate to the penguin. The 60s penguin is sort of similar to the penguin in his early days and penguin triumphant which is a final appearance of the classic white collar criminal mastermind penguin. The most popular penguin is the one in the animated series/films and arkham games where he is a mob boss like the godfather or the kingpin with the iceberg loungs like in the comic book the penguin returns. Also the one from the comic penguin pain and prejudice is a popular one similar to gotham. I really enjoy the penguin on gotham. They do a very good job showing all the best stuff of the penguin. How he is a gray villian not good or bad and very unpredictable like loki from marvel. He also is master manipulater and always has a plan up his sleeve. The penguin is a way better character than the joker that hasnt gotten enough attention for a long time untill now with gotham. His character just has so many things about him which makes him a way better character than the joker. The penguin and the riddler are my top 2 favorite batman villians

I love the fact that penguin has almost always just been a monster. I’m disappointed that they couldn’t include him in the Christopher Nolan movies as one of the many crime bosses that ran the underworld in the first two movies

I think the cool thing about The Penguin is that he's not just a Batman villain, he's a Bruce Wayne villain. Both Wayne and Cobblepot are Gotham's favourite sons, but while Wayne uses his fortune to help the needy and vulnerable, Cobblepot only cares for enriching himself. But at the same time, Cobblepot has that inferiority complex, due to being unattractive and not well liked. He wants to be feared, but he also wants to be loved. He looks at somebody like Bruce Wayne, who represents everything that he is not, and he resents him.

TV series Gotham's Penguin has become one of my all time favorite vilains, his origins there and character progression is amazing. Who would have thought.
The only Penguin portrayals that I like is the Pain & Prejudice series and Fox's Gotham's Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. Never was too found of Devito's.

With an episode like "Birds of a feather" That really depict the penguin
genuinely trying to quit crime but with the tragic nature of the show you
just know it won't work. It's also great for villains like Mr freeze
and Baby-doll, even making the iconic Harley Quinn.
A lot of people forget just how badass and dangerous the penguin can actually be, even without his umbrella :)
The depiction in the TV show, "Gotham" is great. Love it as an origin story.
Penguin is always a personal favorite because he usually wouldn't get caught easily, not to mention he was always able to slip in and out. Though in the latest Gotham's Penguin, he is much more devious and also calculating, he doesn't appear as super villain, but more the factor of his situation.
One thing I do remember that the Penguin was often times much more than his mother's child, he was also shunned by his father due to some family issues

A very underrated villain with interesting backstory.
I was lucky enough to meet the first performer to portray:"The Penguin"..Burgess Meredith in NYC..years ago..unlike his comic villain character..he was a sweet and kindly gentleman.

Nice. I recognize the Iceberg Lounge from some of the penquin fiction I liked. That kind of presented him a Card Shark Bond villain. And also from the "Mystery of the batwoman" animated movie.
To bad with all the different interpretaions penguin rarely gets to this point in his profile.

he was coerced by some men to rob the chemical factory under the criminal gise of red hood which many criminals used in the past then when trying to remove his hood he leaned on part of the frame which broke and caused him to fall into the vat of acid

So the police arrested batman, had him detained, and didn't bother to take his mask off or fingerprint him orrr like found out who he was? So they could still pursue the criminal who stole a priceless artifact? My favorite version of the Penguin is from the Arkham series. They nailed this character.
I love the fact that the Penguin wears his monocle, even in the midst of martial arts bouts. That takes some skill.....
The Penguin had the most horrific backstory his own parents tried to drown him as a baby when they threw him in a river because of his looks and he ended up growing up as a freak show performer in a circus

Eric Coldfire If it was not for Tim Burton writing the story of Batman Returns the movie would have been a 2 hour long episode of the Adam West show from the 1960s with The Penguin and Catwoman going on a treasure hunt under Wayne Manor and yes that was the original script for Batman Returns which thank God that Tim Burton scrapped that story and wrote a new script for Batman Returns and yes some elements of the original script of Batman Returns found it's way in Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever with Two Face and The Riddler going to Wayne Manor and trashing the Batcave

What I like about the character is that even though he looks harmless due to his size and pot belly, he's just as ruthless as well as smart as any other Batman rogue.

I Wanted a New Batman film with Penguin being the main villain.
Trick Umbrellas, Outsmarting Batman, and overall looking like him, with Top hat and all.
Fun fact I made my own design for the penguin: this one wears his classic suit and tie, but also wears his monocle that is his other eye, in which he lost it due to a shootout with joker and black mask. But also has a penguin design on his umbrella, adapting his name
Nolan could have easily imagined a realistic interpretation of the Penguin if he'd wanted to. He did a great job any way in my opinion but I think the Penguin deserves more respect and a serious interpretation like Scarecrow and Two-Face got.
