I should have done this on soaking wet hair instead of just damp hair 😬 Luckily, practice makes perfect lol. Plus I think doing it in the shower with conditioner would have been much smarter. Thank you for all of your tips and corrections! We'll come back to this in a few months to see if I've figured out a better, gentler way 😁
I could feel your tangle pain lol.
I have hair like yours- PLEASE wet your hair first! :P Our hair loves water or Aloe water ! Also it will polish your curls a LOT
Separate in shower after you rinse deep conditioner, sections don’t need to be perfect, the water will make it easy for you to just use your fingers. Less stressful too. 🙂
YES! Try it on wet hair with leave in conditioner. Your hair is beautiful! Also, keep a spray bottle with purified water as you do this.
@@SheppardSharepoint I was just about to say something similar. I do a final detangle and separate in to sections after completely saturating my hair with conditioner. Then I rinse and wrap it up. Makes it a breeze to deal with afterwards.
Im sooo excited for your hair to get super long. Your hair is so thick and i know it will be gorgeous.
Albany Dale yes it already is gorgeous!💜
Ohhh, Joy-el...please spray with water before sectioning. It makes it so much easier. I cringed when I heard that first rip of your hair! I'm so tender headed too. We have the same type hair. I also deal with a lot of spider knots. I snip them out as soon as I get them. Thanks for sharing!
Before you do *Anything* wet your hair and put conditioner on first, before anything (or oil), straight on dirty hair, THEN take sections and detangle. Do everything after (shampoo, deep condition ect) in those detangled sections.
If you shampoo first you create more knots to have to detangle at the end. That's what you were experiencing.
Also *retwist or plait* after detangling, don't just leave it out, it'll shrink and retangle.
Yessss. I was looking n wondering OMG.. I wish I could take over for her. 😵😵😵😵
when you say conditioner do you mean normal conditioner or leave in?
I swear you crack me up Rat tooth comb LMAO.
Your hair is really growing like woah!!!
I've been sectioning my hair since my big chop (four years ago). It can be time consuming and annoying but your hair will thank you later. I noticed I had less breakage, less tangling, easier to manipulate and I can notice dry or split ends sooner. At this point my hair pretty much parts itself. You will notice that your products will be distributed more evenly too. Patience grasshopper. 😁 One suggestion, after you detangle each section do a two strand twist and clip away until you are done with the other sections. It will prevent re-tangling before you're ready to style. Braids and twists properly taken care of will be your best friend. Nothing wrong with leaving your hair alone for a while.
It might have been easier to separate if it wasn't dry
Wow! Your hair is so thick and full😍😍😍
I just love your hair. It is beautiful, thick and lush. Just gorgeous.
Your hair is growing so beautifully love.💕
Try spraying your hair with the aloe vera juice before sectioning. It will melt those tangles like butter! 😉👍💯
I know if I don't use Blue Magic hair grease on my hair it's unmanageable. It really works wonders. I cannot do a wash-n-go hairstyle because my hair will be course. I have to do either a twist out, braids or bantu knots in order to manage my hair.
I know each individual has to figure out what works well for their hair but Blue Magic (blue or green) really works for my 4c hair type.
I wash my hair, place a dime amount in my palm (rub hands together) & apply to my wet hair, oil my scalp & brush it through my hair, it leaves my mane so soft. Oil the scalp is optional but apply on hair is pertinent for sheen & softness.
I hope you consider trying this product & see what you think about it. You may surprise yourself regarding the ability to manage your mane.
It was hard to view a portion of this video to see you struggling to merely part your hair, but you did it.
👍👏💕
Patricia Nichols Yup! My mom used this on me as a kid. She’s wash and twist my hair and it made it stay moisturized and healthy
OMG finally found someone with the same hair type as me and thickness
ashanti hudson Same.

Next time you should Part your hair with your fingers (so you can feel the tangled) with the conditioner in it. It would make life sooo much easier. The parts do not need to be super straight so a comb is not needed
It would be best to wet your hair with warm water to open the cuticles, add conditioner, then section your hair "before washing your hair " keep it in sections and then add your products.. this routine helped me a lot!
It’s so “Knotty” because you wear it in a wash ‘n’ go 24/7 without stretching and protecting it. You just let it shrink on itself and re-tangle daily.
I've been struggling with this and keep having to finger derangle my hair, thanks.
Assuming you have already showered detangled and rinsed Joy-el style😜. Section CAREFULLY using ONLY your fingers while wet. Add your leave in/ moisturizer. Done. Also, can section with conditioner in hair. Section, clip, un-clip a section, rinse section by section remembering to re-clip each section after rinsing. If your looking for more curl definition, use your choice of leave in then styling product ( gel, mousse etc. ) Our 4 type hair should be very wet when applying products. Apply section by section. Massage downward , rake to clump curls. Let air dry or diffuse. Glad you tried it. 👍🏾🥰
Your beautiful afro is getting bigger. 💚😍
If I had 4C hair I would rock long box braids and beautiful Afros with baby’s breath and wraps. You are so beautiful and unique! You will show the world our beauty ❤️
Omg I’m was literally crying.. I never met anyone with the same exact hair texture as me. You really just helped me out a lot and I will definitely be watching your videos and I’ve already subscribe... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
This video was adorable!! I’m glad you tried sections and love how you’re growing and learning everyday. I commend you for doing this. Sometimes I read these comments and some of the ignorance and negativity is suffocating. Thanks for sharing despite it.
Sectioning is WAAAY easier and less harsh on our hair if its wet/damp first! 💓 also maybe a rat tail comb isn’t the best to use on dry hair lol. xx
Lianne Raymond Yeah. I'm thinking her hair should be super wet -- like fresh out the shower, dripping wet -- for her to get the most slip/least resistance when detangling. I think that rat tail comb is great for sectioning, as long as she doesn't use it to actually comb through her hair.
I recommend keeping your hair in two French braids into a bunny tail to keep your hair protected, and from knotting.
You mean two African Braids 🌍
Omgoodness I was feeling it for you. I see several others have commented the same thing I would say - DON'T detangle on dry hair. Have soaking wet hair and use conditioner and detangle also you should leave some conditioner in your hair.
This is my first time watching and I'm enjoying the content 🙂 My granddaughter had 4c hair and I'm constantly learning new ideas/ things to do for her hair to be healthy and to tell her mom to try as well. I hate seeing her afraid when I say I'm going to do her hair because of what she goes through getting it done.
Your afro is goals 😍 you should try box braids!! They would look so beautiful on you ❤
Your fro is growing so fast I love it you literally are showing that rocking the fro can allow your hair to grow protective styles are not necessary
@3:13 you should wear your hair like that but with a twist out and Bobby pins to hold the part.
Your sections look so cute. I think a puff Mohawk hairstyle will look so cute on you.
I don't remember if you like coconut oil but putting a generous amount of that on your hair when you're detangling before shampooing is another way to help the detangling process : )
The more you section your hair the more it’ll naturally fall into those same partings and it’ll make the detangling process easier every time you go to style! Especially if you’re doing a twist out or braid out where you’re thoroughly detangling
Do a high puff!!
Love your hair its so thick 😍. Do what works for you. Dont feel pressured to do what works for other people. 🤗
I love your “realness” Joy-el! Thank you for sharing your journey. I’ve learn so much❤
Your fro -- so consistently dense! I absolutely love it!
you might like the ultimate tangle teezer , it has longer teeth I got mine off of amazon after watching another UA-camr try it and I swear it cuts detangling time down to nothing
Lmao tangle teezers damage hair
Idk why but the first middle part with the two clips at the side is a lewk to me lool ✨✨
I like how relatable you make your content. Other UA-camrs who focus on styling and maintaining natural hair do great, but I feel like their appearance of always being on top of it and never having issues kind of makes it harder to follow, and it makes me wonder if I can even follow their tutorials until I fix the issues that they don't have. But with your videos, you're like "oh dang I have knots, anyway..."
I'm going to buy myself some clips and I think that this is ultimately going to be my reference for while I section my hair for the first time.
Great effort hun!...sectioning should be done in the pre-poo detangling phase and keep sections while washing. Never try this on drying hair....will help so much.
I appreciate that you do what works for you and it shows in how fast your hair has grown :)
Omg your hair has grown so much!🥰
Oh my goodness sis you have the sweetest personality. Loved this. Hair is always just a figuring it out. After I had kids my texture changed and I'm still figuring out what I'm supposed to do lol
Awesome I love your hair 😍 You remind me so much of me when I’m sectioning, detangling and styling after wash lol 😂
Your hair has grown like crazy
I absolutely love your 4C hair !!!
She aint 4C shes like 4A, 4B the lowest. Or maybe a mix of the 2.
@@AnastasiaLUVSU no sweetheart that 4c d e hair smh..
@@Rue100 Nah. Sorry. She definitely is not a 4C. Not all type 4 is a damn 4C. It's becoming more clear that she is actually a 4B especially looking at the back of her head. Her hair curls up with the product.
Yall need to stop misleading people. Her lil silky baby hair edges also give it away. We all know 4C people dont have baby hairs. I have never seen joyel washing her hair in the shower like everyone else so we can actually see what it looks like with actual water hitting it.
AnastasiaLUVSU huh 😂 I know so many 4c friends with baby hair.. if you don’t have baby hairs it’s because you don’t take care of your hair , hair type has nothing to do with it
@@twilighthottie102 Why wouldn't i have baby hairs? My hair is 3c/4a so obviously i have them. Cut the bullshit.
Yeah, I didn’t section my hair either when it was short, but once it got longer I had to start 😭
Christen Bennett sammmeeee
Gosh you are pretty. I love watching your videos, and am admittedly, intensely jealous of your hair, and your eyes, and your voice, and.. well everything. I have been processing my hair for so long, and have never been brave enough to leave it be for more than half a year, max. Everyone in my family has beautiful waves, or tight curls, and I have pin straight hair, and a very unusual colour. Someday I think that I will try to be brave and just let it grow, let it do what it wants, and enjoy whatever colour it was born to be. Your confidence and adventures are inspiring, even to someone with super boring hair like me. :)
Girl you have so much hair it is soooo thick! 😍 just wait until it gets longer.
Beautiful hair❤!! I love your fro - The aloe vera could be making your hair dry- I've seen others say they had to use less or stop using it. Good Luck😉
You should try the Felicia leatherwood brush I think it would help more than the denman or tangle teaser
NO, WAIT! To avoid knots every time you part I highly recommend that if you use a rat-tail comb to NOT just part from the roots and try to pull up! It’s literally forming a giant tangle each the you pull the comb up. Just use your fingers to roughly part from the ENDS, and then you can clean up the roots with a comb afterwards. I’m telling you, it will save you time, and pain.
Ur so prettty ur hair has gotten so long! Ur skin even looks clearer! Have u changed ur diet?
You are so beautiful with gorgeous hair.. and it grows fassst. I’ve been contemplating relaxing my hair again after being natural since 2013, but after watching your other video about you going from relax to natural and seeing how well your hair has come so far am I don’t know am torn lol..
Watching you part in sections I felt your pain.. but it was kinda 😄 .. I have 4c hair too
I love your vids!!! The hair is looking fabulous as usual ❤️
Your4C hair is beautiful. Sectioning is very important but right now my hair is shorter and not as dense as yours but I do section for deep conditioning to make sure I don't miss anything.
4B.
@@AnastasiaLUVSU girl that ain't no damn 4b, i'm 4a/4b and my hair is much curly/looser than hers. when i apply product to my hair it immediately curls up. she slapped conditioner through that stuff and it remained whooly as f. lol
Detangling should be done before washing your hair or while you prepoo. It makes a huge difference for styling
I disagree. I cannot detangle first, or I will need to detangle AGAIN when I put in my leave-in. I also cannot detangle in the shower, because it takes out more hair than necessary. So I just wait until it's leave-in time to detangle.
I understand that everyone hair is different, but there should be no reason your hair is still extremely tangled after conditioning. Prepoo-detangle- wash- condition- detangle- rinse- style
I've tried detangling in other places along my routine, and doing it at the leave-in just works best for me. Everyone is different. Just like some people can detangle IN the shower. I cannot. Too much hair comes out.
Your hair is thicker and it's flourishing ! Lol when you said ' My rattooth comb'. You could mist with water a bit before separating to avoid getting hurt ( I felt it every time you said that hurt)
Your hair grew soooo much !!!
Water water water and more water it will be so MUCH easier I have the same texture except its longer I don't even section to wash wash deep condition apply the oils or whatever then style I dont even damp dry it after washing I use no towels tshirts or whatever I let the moisture remain BUT YOUR IS GORGEOUS
Since my big chop over a year ago at the year mark I separated into 6 sections and that’s how I keep it always It makes life easier till my hair gets past my shoulders
WOW! Your hair is so beautiful!!
You should do this with deep conditioning too
I wash my daughters hair in twists. Makes detangling so much easier. Your hair is beautiful.
Traci Early : #Goals. I’m just trying to work up the strength to get my hair in twists to begin with. 😑
Been watching your journey so yes, practice makes perfect, but water is always your friend! love your hair & looking forward to see your next vid!
If you're gonna start doing more protective styles during summer -- or simply less manipulation during those months -- would love to see a tutorial on how you might use brightly-colored scarves and head wraps (how to tie them in various styles, ethnic clothing hauls or closet selections to match the head wraps, choosing earnings/jewelry, etc). BTW ... U might consider getting a P.O. box address to put in the description box so that companies/folks can send u free stuff to review or hair/head accessories to try. Love ya, girl!
Your fro is flourishing and I love it❣️
I do my sections in the shower with a rinse out conditioner or sometimes with a pre poo. It makes it easier and less breakage while manipulating. Great tips in this video. Thanks for sharing.
Keep doing this look!!! (The beginning where you parted it I love the slick/fro look on you! Gorgeous
as someone with similar texture I remember how annoying and difficult it was to go through the motions at your more awkward length/thickness so I definitely was going to suggest wearing twists through the week to cut down on time detangling (keeps the hair organized) washing your hair in twists to prevent tangling and then just restyling by taking the twists down one by one after washing/conditioning and styling one by one instead of tackling a big mass if that makes sense After awhile you'll likely miss seeing your hairs thickness and bigness lol i definitely did but to retain length moisture and saving time this method did help me to retain a lot of length and to reach goals just keeping it in twists from start to finish. detangling time was cut down massively as the hair just stays organized twist set to twist set.
i love watching the fro gro.
I love how thick your hair is ❤️
After a long hard day of work, thanks for making me laugh. My thought was oh no she's not twisting it back up or clipping it back together after moisturizing it. That's a No-No and it's a rat tail comb not a rat tooth comb oh, that was so funny! :-) and I think the clip is called a claw clip not a crocodile clip it don't worry sweetie it's coming. Took me awhile to learn all of this stuff as well but thingamajig works too!
You have had one of the most beautiful journeys and your hair growth has been amazing, it looks so thick, healthy and happy 🙏☺️
My hair definitely is like yours although I'm not mixed, how long did this take you???????
Your hair is so thick and pretty.
Damn, the GROWTH!
I love your smile!!!! New subbie ❤️
Your hair is beautiful I love your channel in a new subbie and I look forward to seeing more
Your hair is super thick.
Kinda glad my hair is still short enough and I don’t have to worry about sectioning yet.
Your hair is so plush and lucious 😍
I put my hair in 4-6 sections as I deep condition (I deep condition first, so I only have to shower once), and work in those sections for everything. (So I shampoo section by section, put my leave-in section by section, then the styler section by section.) I do this to make sure I apply the product fully (less chance that I'll skip applying product to a chunk of hair), and so that my hair will stay detangled and manageable.
Nice soft afro hair...so beautiful.
You will get faster at sectioning with practice. Twists are awesome for keeping your hair detangled and protected. It will lessen the single strand knots that you are starting to get. I will say that with twists as a protective style make sure they do not stay in for too long or they will mat up and turn into locks. Also make sure to keep your scalp moisturized because the sun will dry it out faster with twists. I usually moisturize my scalp daily with a spray of water and olive oil. Works like a charm for me. I know you like argan oil so you replace olive oil with that instead. You can also replace the water with the aloe vera spray. Hope these tips help you on your journey. Detangling on wash day is my greatest work out but what helps me is detangling with a rinse out conditioner, then shampooing, and then deep conditioning. I find doing so lessen the amount of hair I lose and helps my detangle. Some people discourage switching up the order of shampoo and conditioner because shampoo raises the hair cuticles and conditioner helps lower them so your hair remains balanced, but since I deep condition every wash day this is not a problem for me. Wow this is a really long comment. Next time I'll shorten it.
Next time twist as you detangle your hair will retain more moisture that way. Washing your hair in sections also helps with detangling and twisting your hair with deep conditioner helps your hair absorb the deep conditioner better.
I have 4c hair and im just cant do it. Wearing natural hair for me is literally painful. Im pretty sure my blood pressure went up when i got my hair done a few days ago.
Get some roller clips it comes like 10 in a pack for cheap they hold well & dont snag or break
Hair goals 🥰🥰🥰
You’re the first person on UA-cam who has a very similar texture to mine 💕 new subbie
Same
You can get good butterfly clips at sallys or a beauty supply shop.
you should do a twist out or curl out tutorial
Girl I used to hate sectioning my hair. But it does make a difference! You’ll get used to it quickly especially if you twist your hair daily. I work in four sections. Left righ bottom left bottom right. I used to also section my bangs too once they grew in but it was an extra unnecessary step! Long story short you’ll figure it out! Lol and at the rate your hair is growing now it’ll be Angela Davis ready by December!
Damn. I have your hair type, am at this exact same timeframe of growth / length (starting from a shaved head) and am experiencing every issue / desire you mentioned. 😅. My only difference is I don’t use gel or any heavy hard to wash out products. I have yet to section my hair... but know the time is coming (been cutting mini-scoops of single strand knots frequently). I’m grateful for your videos Girl! And nervous for the increased responsibilities ahead that accompany increased / retained length. 😭. Anyway - TAKE CARE LADY!
Maybe you could try detangling on damp hair
Also I could see you rock two flat braids
this was video was too relatable😂
i know this pain far too well
Literally with every video your hair looks bigger omg. Will you be rocking any proactive styles this summer?
Hopefully box braids! I want to try putting them in myself 😁
Beautiful hair! But as many suggested, do this on soaking wet hair! Also, I have type 4a hair but it’s very dense like yours, so you’ll likely need a lot more product to fully moisturize and penetrate each strand. I wouldn’t be able to survive on a dime size amount per quadrant. Sealing with an oil at the end could be very helpful too!
Best of luck :-)
You hair looks like 4b like me which surprisingly there aren't a lot of on YT so thank you :)
She is deffently 4b cause she jave have hait like mine
True most are 3b,3c,4a!! 4b and 4c need more vids!!
Do the aloe vera review! 😊
I’m so excited for your review of the mane choice ☺️😩
You're hair is so big. It's time to invest in a hair pick! You're hair is flourishing right now and so are you
Your hair has grown a lot, and I can’t wait to see you section your beautiful fro
