I have 4c hair but my hair is so fine (as in, the diameter is small) it sometimes looks and acts differently because it's "lighter". I definitely don't have a thick head of hair like Joy-el.
Edit: I do have looser curls at my nape though.

Yep, I noticed some of the wars over your hair type in the comment sections. I've minded my business about that. Lol. But I did note the tone of some of the defenders against the 4c. Almost as if it would be an insult for you to be born biracial and have type 4 hair. I think it's the underlying ugly of the good hair trope. Which biracial Black Americans have been the main poster children for. But your hair's at a glance aesthetic is type 4c, it seems to have all of the signifiers of 4c. Your hair is gloriously and beautifully type 4. But a lot of people see 4c as a slur. Lol. And I don't think they wanted it for you.

Girl, it's a mess. Like people straight up behave like you can't have ANY curl pattern at any point. That includes your hair being soaking wet or having every product imaginable in your hair, and creating curls with a twist out. Also you can't have hair past your shoulders and be 4C. For folks like that, 4C hair is just hair you can't do anything to. It's hair that can't bring you any joy. Hair that can be styled is not 4C hair.

I kind of see it more of possession. Biracial women with all types of 4 hair get to be the representation of black hair. When you search every type of black hair texture or go to any commerical or go to any beauty page, biracial women are shown. So to say she wasn't 4C was a way for those women to keep that texture representation. 4C is the only hair type that you can type in and ONLY see unambigious black women. But race is interesting. There are people who 80% or more white who have kinky hair textures. We want to be selfish and have something for ourselves but Joy-El has the hair she has and can't change it. We can't shut people out of type 4 hair even if the media and our own internal hate stops us from seeing unabigious black women as the main form of that type 4 beauty. Joy (and Jaleesa Moses) is the only biracial hair youtubers that I follow because she understands and doesn't try to erase anyone. Joy, everyone knows you're mostly 4C and no one hates you for saying it. Say it loud and say it proud. Also hair texture can change over time, especially as it gets longer and as you age, so those are factors to take in consideration as you go through this journey.
I made this reply to someone else but I want to put it here so anyone can see it, but the hate you get is primarily based in pain and jealousy. People don't want you to have 4C hair but people need to come face to face with their own pain from being underrepresented/misrepresented and not loved. In some cases, it's people's self hate that causes them to lash out at you.
Biracial women with all types of 4 hair get to be the representation of black hair. When you search every type of black hair texture or go to any commerical or go to any beauty page, biracial women are shown over any black woman. So to say Joy wasn't 4C was a way for those women to keep that texture representation.
4C is the only hair type that you can type in and ONLY see unambigious black women but that is slowly changing and now it seems unambigious black women are losing representation even as we slowly gain it.
But we all know that race is interesting. There are people who 80% or more white who have kinky hair textures and even some afro features.
We want to be selfish and have something for ourselves and this puts people like Joy in the path of our pain but Joy-El has the hair she has and can't change it.
We can't shut people out of type 4 hair even if the media and our own internal hate stops us from seeing unabigious black women as the main form of that type 4 beauty.
It's so easy to search our hair type and then see biracial women and feel we still aren't beautiful enough even when we try to be natural.
Joy (and Jaleesa Moses) are the only biracial hair youtubers that I follow because they understand this and doesn't try to erase anyone. Joy always gives props, shows love for black women, and represents herself well as a biracial women. She isn't self hating or calling herself the face of black women. Much respect for that.

Well said, the issues ppl are having is race. Race is man made, so when biology/dna pop up i.e. mixed women with 4c hair, 100% black women with straight hair people don't know how to react. They can't reconcile what they have been taught with what they see. If more people would educate themselves on genes, DNA and biology there would be less conflict and more understanding.

Though I understand what you’re saying, I also believe that unambiguous black women deserve their anger about this. Of course Joy doesn’t deserve the hate of she’s not trying to be disrespectful, but unambiguous Black women in general deserve to be represented fully and positively represented at that. Representation matters, especially for young people, but even for people of different races since having para-relationships with people on tv can help them understand deeply the importance of diversity. If all they see is biracial black people they’ll believe that representation can just be birracial or light skin and will hire them in the future or be kinder to them. It’s important that people aren’t rude but it’s also important to understand that anger and lift people up instead of acting like we should only think scientifically. Society is impt , and we can’t (and shouldn’t) change that, we should instead change how society views people, especially unambiguous black women. (This is coming from a LS, monoracial black woman with 3c/4a hair who is mistaken for mixed, I still want my darker and more obviously monoracial sisters to be respected, protected, and represented.)

If it was the silky texture which some 4B ppl have, it’d be more apparent what her type is

      @ameena199514 4 роки тому +2

teahgurl hmm, yeah I’ve been going back and forth, when she did the wash and go, immediately I was like there’s more curls you know than coils, but she posted a post of how it looked the next day and definition was completely gone. So I took a step back and was like wait a minute I’m confused again, but my hair use to do that where definition would last only a day, I think she should use a comb and like a styling brush something larger maybe or smaller sections which she didn’t do in the wash and go, but sis has a lot of hair so I understand or rather see the struggle my hair ain’t that thick. It’s all about products to and the way it’s styled.

Type 4c hair gets a rep for having no curl definition but the curls are just small and when moisturized the curls POP

First let me say, THANK YOU!! I’m LOVING this video, and your hair is absolutely GORGEOUS!! There isn’t many influencers with our hair type out here, so thanks again!! A light complected women WITH a gorgeous head of texture 4 curls and coils......It’s nice to see some representation. I’ve never been the best at doing my hair. I found it particularly frustrating trying to copy the tutorials of influencers with hair that was NOTHING like mine. Especially when I was newly natural and thinking that if I used “that” product, and “that” technique, I’d get ”that” result. It did nothing but set me up for failure, upset, frustration and ultimately the disappointment of an unattainable goal.
Honestly, this, what you’ve described in your video, THIS IS MY HAIR!! LOL Soooooooooo If anyone gets butt-hurt about labeling 4c hair......TOO BAD, SOOOOOOO SAD!! 😝 LOL
I have a 1/2 inch ring 3c running all around the perimeter of the back and sides of my hair. I have type 4 a, b & c curls. And in the crown I have type 4c coils. In the front I have weird z pattern, type 4b mixed with who-know’s-what😳🤦🏽‍♀️
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE MY HAIR!!! I also firmly believe that are several types of 4c hair. Silky, In-between and Coarse, all of which can be a combination of, wavy, coily and extremely coily (where it’s hard to see the definition. The strands are frizziest, finest, prone to tangling and braking). Of course these are simply my opinions and observations of the differences between my own hair, and that of those of friends, family members.

I swore my big chop almost 4 yrs. ago was going to result in the sweetest Angela Davis-style afro, but after a spray of water and some finger coiling, I looked like a grown-@$$ chocolate Shirley Temple, lol! As my hair has grown, my curl pattern has diverged so much from the one I originally thought I had, that it's crazy. I have type 3 loose curls in front(like, scrunch in your hand to help it curl loose), 3 and 4a/b on the sides, 4a/b in the back, 4b/c at the crown, and a 4c perimeter, just to keep it interesting. I love a good twistout, and I won't dare attempt a wng at my length now(past bsl) for fear of looking like a mental patient with my wild textures and uneven-looking hair(especially in Texas heat/humidity!), though I generally bun it anyway. Like you said, Joy-el, healthy hair IS good hair, regardless of pattern! Tyfs! ♡

She has curls not coils like 4c is. No typing chart shows 4c as anything other than coils. 4b has diversity too. This is a clear zigzag pattern with a little bit with tighter 4a coils

Sharmaine, I have followed your natural hair journey and I must say I love your hair and the more it grows, the more gorgeous it is. I see some 3c at the nape and you have 4B, 4C and a sprinkling of 4A in other sections of your head. I meant to comment that when you did the wash and go but I didn't want to start a curl pattern war in the comment section. I'm 4A/3C and my curls remain quite visible when dry until the next wash day. You definitely have a lot of definition at the nape.

girl, we got the same texture. 4a,4b,4c and all of its glory!! im the same way, my curl pattern in the crown is very loose like 4a, it also stays defined after it dries. the top and back of my head is 4b. the middle of my nape is 4a, and the bare end of it is 4b. my temples are 4c but my edges are very loose baby hairs (which is weird). my strands are thicker in the 4a section and finer in the 4b-4c sections. when it all dries.... my temples shrink up SO MUCH.... giving the appearance that my afro is uneven. its so kinky that it literally does not curl unless i have tons of product on it. i love my hair, i primarily keep it in twists now to retain length, especially now that we're in quarantine. my go-to hairstyles are loose puffs.

This is about the 1 of the few youtubers i've found exactly like my hair type, it's clearly 4C maybe a mixture of 4b at the back, but mainly 4C, mine is also the same, i don't think anyone had one curl pattern anyway. I feel like i'm watching tutorials for my hair, finally! Instead of others tryinh to manipulate their hair to be 4A/4B or looser. I feel like people associate 4C with just dry undefined hair, but this is an example of moisturised healthy 4C hair! Especially when wet or conditioner in it you can see you curls pop more but then when it's dry not as visible and yeah her hair didn't shrink as much because her hair is longggg now, look at her old video.
4C is not limited to just being fully black, i think people confuse the take down of braids or dry, pending a well needed deep conditioner for being 4C hair, not looked after hair, constantly put into protective styles to avoid taking care of it and hidden under weaves when that is just dry, not nourished hair!! 4C is hard work but this type of hair needs extra care compared to other hair types and this is a clear example of 4C hair being well taken care of, but quickly dismissed as being 4B or 4A because it looks well moisturised and you can see definition when wet. If i could show you my 4C hair when i neglected with weaves/ protective styles for long periods of time, to now, you will know what i mean.
4C is beautiful lets embrace it! I love how it's like the most unique hair textures of all! I love how she's embracing and showing how she works with it.

As long as you can find products that work with your hair type it really doesn't matter what category your hair falls under. I think this hair type chart is totally unhelpful and just causes confusion. My hair doesn't seem to fit the typing system at all as it is frizzy and kinky but I know what it likes product wise. I think afro hair personally goes further than 4c and if you look at various people around, be it men or women with their natural hair, you will see the different kinks and textures we all have.

  • @selinaBARMAR2565
    @selinaBARMAR2565 4 роки тому +1

You appear to be 4b, but that won't be very apparent until you have more growth. Curly and kinky hair often starts getting a looser pattern if the hair grows longer because the length begins to loosen the curl pattern. You don't have the very long length but your growth abundant and it shows in the fullness of your hair.

I kept cutting the crown of my hair cause it’s so much looser, finer and tangles more than the rest of my natural 4c hair cause I thought it was permanently damaged from the relaxer even after being relaxer free for 3 years. I did that until I started watching UA-cam and kept hearing other natural sisters stating that they had different curl patterns all throughout their hair. So that gave me the understanding that the middle of my hair the middle of my probably just doing what it natural is supposed. So I stopped cutting it. Am glad you didn’t do what I did lol 🤣😂😅.

It's funny, the more you use the clay, the more your curls will clump together and become more defined. The first time I did it, my hair barely clumped but after a week of doing the max hydration method, it got much much curlier and now it defines quite easily.
My hair is very similar, 3c 4a in very back, 4a in front, barely shrinks but doesn't define as well just hangs lol but middle and sides are def 4b maybe even a little 4c. Very dense, lots of strands. Takes an age to detangle. The most beautiful thing on my body.
When you use the clay, make it heavy enough to weigh your hair down and put it on clean washed hair, that way it draws out the toxins better.
Never thought I'd love my hair so much. But now I have to fight myself to leavebot alone because it were up to me, I'd play in it every day lol.
I've had so much fun with wash and go's but it causes single strand knots and then I have to trim more often.
I want length now so I'm having to leave it alone and stop wash and go's.
Already seen a big growth spurt this year. Even after a trim, it's still down to boob lenth lol. Want bra strap by the end of the year!
