I get so disheartened as I’m 4.5 years natural now and my hair is around your length I’d say and I guess from the reaction some people give me when they hear how long I’ve been natural, and also social media influence, in my head I’m like damn my hair should be down my back by now. Il never go back to relaxers but I do feel I’ve become fed up with not being able to retain length 😞 I definitely need to assess my hair regime!!

I agree with learning your hair texture. The first year of my healthy hair journey, I thought I had heat damage in the front because of the loose texture compared to the crown But after the first year I realized I had 2 drastically different textures growing from my scalp. I actually have 3 textures but the the 3c and 4c really stand out.

I get you being apprehensive about going natural and how some people were mean about it, cause we as a society just aren't used to seeing a biracial girl with white skin and a black fro. That being said, everyone is right. You have such striking facial features and watching this video with your more lengthy hair I'm just enamored. You look AMAZING. The ends of your hair have like lightened and they look beautiful with your skin. God gave you such contrasting features because he knew you'd grow into them. Mild heat isn’t too detrimental and as long as the flat iron is not hot enough to fry your hair and you do one pass you’re fine. I use a blow dryer on low heat to my hair because it’s low porosity and the heat helps with water absorption. I don’t blow dry it dry I just blow dry it enough that my hair can soak up the water and products on my hair after I’ve washed it

Thank you for this!! I may finally give in and deep condition. Also, a thing I learned about moisture vs. hydration from Susan Yara which OPENED MY EYES (slight exaggeration) is that oil=moisture, water=hydration, at least in skincare, but I don't think it would be that different from haircare. Branding uses the two interchangeably which I think adds to the confusion. Dehydrated skin (skin that is showing fine lines, is tight or sensitive) needs water, and skin that is dry (is flaky or feels rough) needs oil. No idea how this would translate to hair, but there might be something to it!

I've been natural for ages, I believe 10 years now, and it's been a rough journey to say the least.
I noticed the following: I over the years I have developed sensitivity to the water in the country where I live now (the water is 'hard' as they say), which has my scalp in a hot mess, research has shown me that if your scalp isn't healthy your hair won't grow well. A doctor also mentioned hormonal issues which also explains why my skin and nails are a mess. So those are all things that we have to keep in mind when our hair doesn't grow. We might be doing the right things but changes in our bodies or our environment, or if we move to different countries, or even different regions within the same country, can all affect our hair. My hair was at it's best when I lived in Europe, and the water quality was better than where I live now.

Hey Charmaine, I would like to address something that you said in your video about genetics. This is not a hate comment or even an angry comment, just food for thought. I understand why you put that disclaimer out there, but I'd like to talk about the subliminal message behind a statement like that because I hear a lot of black people (women more specifically) saying this. When we think about how white women grow their air we never think about their genetics. If genetics doesn't affect their hair growth as much, why would it affect us (black women) so much? This reminds me of how a few years ago black women would say that another was "mixed" or "Indian" as an excuse for why their hair was longer than another, instead of thinking about the regimen. It gives off an air of there being some lucky black girls who have beaten the odds rather than black girls who have healthy and proper hair care techniques. I will admit I am no hair expert, therefore I do not know about the specifics of hair genetics and how it effects women in different ways. And I know that there are a percentage of women whose hair is stunted significantly because of genetics no matter how healthy their is. I guess what I'm saying is if it it's not talked about in the white community or even the mixed race/biracial/type 3 community, why is it that the type 4 community, where most black women fall, is it an excuse that is used so commonly? Again, not a hate or chastising comment, just food for thought. Just a discussion that could maybe go somewhere. Or perhaps I am reaching? Has anyone else ever thought or experienced this? Your tips were spot on though. So many people have such high expectations, they just need to let it grow and let it flow.

I do think genetics plays a part in hair though, for all races. I personally have super thick coily hair with a defined curl patters. When me sister does my hair, sometimes her fingers bruise because my strands are so thick. Her hair on the other hand is kind of light, fluffy and thin. We have both the same parents, but it was just the luck of the draw.
