- Onto the reassembly part. Mockup time is over, let's start throwing parts on this thing and get it back together. Flywheels are in, cam bearings are in. Pulled the motor from the frame and re-gasketed the oil pump, which means taking it apart. Sorry for no audio on the oil pump, but I tried explaining the steps as I go through it in the timelapse. Don't forget to TIME YOUR BREATHER! Here's how I did it. I left the pinion gear in, which makes it a bit more challenging, but it is doable. Enjoy.

I definitely Shazammed that jam 😂🤘
I enjoy that one too! Thanks for watching!
This was helpful. I’m trying to get flywheel assemblies done so I can get them in their respective crankcases (1959 and 1968). Someone told me you can use a -72 oil pump on these early motors and they have bigger gears for better oil pressure. Your thoughts?
Not an expert on early stuff so take with a grain of salt. @tatro machine has a video on sporty oil pumps and the changes that was super helpful to me on different versions/years. I thought you could run a later model on the early ones and they have an elongated port that helps oil pressure. I’ve never had an early motor though so I can’t say for sure. Thanks for watching! Good luck!
❤❤❤
its about where mine is right now. no frame yet.
Got a frame at all or still on the hunt?
Yo, question. have you ever taken an oil pump out without pulling the motor?
I have not. I don't think there is enough clearance to get the pumps out in the frame.
Just got my first ironhead and it pukes oil from the breather tube. I took off the cam cover and my breather is not timed with the engine. Not sure how that could go wrong if someone could give me input or point me to the right direction of fixing this issue it would be very appreciated. Thanks!
Cam timing is off the motor. Make sure to line up the pinion gear and oil pump first. Then the cams. It should be in the ball park of the flywheels, but they're not always perfect. Start with pinion, then cams. When you know those are good you can move onto ignition. Thanks for watching!
I'm not sure you did that right, aren't you supposed to do that to the front cylinder top dead center which would be the third markings on the flywheel going counter-clockwise through the timing looks like maybe you did it through the second timing mark on the flywheel which would be the middle Mark of the three sets of markings
I'll have to go back and rewatch... It feels like years ago even though it was only a bunch of months.... If memory serves I used the Vertical Line (40 Degree) mark to time this one, not TDC mark. At some point I'm sure I verified which mark was which on this build. I think the Timing Advance and the Breather Gear timing are supposed to sync up, not TDC, but this is off memory so don't lock me into it. I thought I was done with sporties when I made this video.
