The fact that this man's hardwood floor is spotless at the end despite working on a fossil designed to drain oil on the exhaust pipe, frame, and concrete, tells me he's done it a time or two. Excellent content, informational and I would recommend you watch his HD filter cutting video if you haven't already!!
Boom love it I have a stock 71xlch that is so fun to ride the old vintage feeling still running points and running beautifully. Keep up the old ironhead videos. It's a dying breed.
Brother, your faith in your ability to do an oil change in your residence (on a hardwood floor - DAMN!) is clear evidence that you really know your Harley. I particulary liked your adaptation of plastic bottles to id drainig the oil from the tank and as an unusual funnel for filling the transmission. Many thanks for the interesting demo.
Brings back some memories. Greetings from Australia. My first bike was an ironhead but it looked a little crazier than this one. I think it was a 74 and had the factory right side shift. I recall riding with my buddies and just to be extra annoying I'd make sure to wear my 'Ironheads - blowing away big twins since 1957' t-shirt.. I ride a springer now and have no idea where that shirt is today.
Very nice video. I had a 1974 XLCH (kick start only, and right side shifter). I seem to remember a different oil tank, and an oil filter in front of the crankcase, instead of inside the tank. In the early days of electric starters on Sportsters, Harley Davidson made Sportsters that had both electric and kick starters in case the electric starter did not work. Charging systems were not the same as they are today, and the batteries for the electric starters were much larger than on the kickers. That meant that XLH (electric) and XLCH (kicker) Sportsters had different oil tanks and filters. Your video brought back old memories. I still have a set of points and a clear plug for the timing inspection hole. Keep the videos coming.
Literally the best tutorial on UA-cam. Cant say enough about your approach on this procedure. Stellar my friend. Now I know exactly what I need to do, on Dads 71 XLCH !!!!! Also was wondering about the use of a synthetic oil, as well as Mobile 1 V Twin oil in the old iron. Looks like you answered that for me. Thanks Brother. :-)
Have a 77 xl and a 74. The 74 sits and over fills the primary. The 77 blows it out the crankcase breather. That's a nice one you have there. Thanks for the video.
Nice clean video, here i am its Friday evening and I'm strolling through videos and here you are and i noticed your tassels and I'm guilty, thanks brother 👍
Great video my friend, I just picked up a 1975 sportster that's been sitting. When I started it, it blew oil out of the crank case. Your video made it make sense. Just waiting on the carburetor kit to come in.
If the bikes does not run. And you want to do the fluids before running it for the first time in years. How do you get the sumped oil out of the crank case?
Great explained vedio,,, question I just installed a 78 iron head on 71 frame wonder about chrome tube on bottom of right side of front engine on end of alternator to engine housing,, I see oil pump feed fitting and return fitting next to oil sending unit but don't understand how the chrome pipe in question hooks up to oil system,, ,?? Have after market oil tank with bottom fitting for feed and return on top back and what appears to be vent fitting on filler cap neck I assume is for gear case vent hose on top behind rear cylinder base??
Excellent video. Clear and concise. Just scored a 71 ironhead and doing the maintenance. One question, how do you know when you have the right amount of oil in the tank. I don’t see any kind of mark or way to gauge when enough is enough. Sure I’m missing something simple. 5:19
really great video funny I learned all the tips you explained in the first three minutes the hard way 😸 the first time a sporty puked all over the garage floor I almost had a coronary ...man I wish they had UA-cam back in the 80s .. but seriously One of the best how to videos on ironhead stuff. really nice bike too ! thanks 👍
Yes Back than if you were clued in on correct information you never let the cat out the bag and you looked so smart and cool . Now we just look it up . Great life these days! No need for the cool guys blessings 🤣
I got ahold of a 77 Ironhead that has been sitting for over 10 years, and nothing was done to it before storage. Can you tell me what I should start with to get it road ready
I have a ironhead 900 and i don't know anything about this bike so you could tell me what is yhe bike and inform me about what the oil filter i could buy
Hi Jay I have a question about the magneto on a 69 sportster, the plug wires, does it matter if you install number 1 or number 2 wire on either hole on the magneto?
My bf has a 67' ironhead sportster, he's been trying to figure out what kind of oil to use? Synthetic or not? He's been told to not use synthetic, so I'm just curious if someone or even jay w case could help us out?!
Old Harley's are too noisy and leak eventually using synthetics. Dyno oil and straight weight oil (sae 50, 60, or 70) is the way to go. 20w-50 in a pinch is okay but the bike will weep oil here and there overtime.
Is it ok if I put SAE 50 in the engin and I was told to put transmission and primary chaincase lubricant in the transmission. Because you were saying to put the same in both
Hey my friend, god bless you for posting this. Just 1 question, I have an 84 sportster XLH, and it looks like it might be somewhat similar, although I’m not sure, do I need separate transmission fluid? Or do I do what you did and just add the same engine oil to the reservoir under the seat and the second spot you filled?
I have a 76 Sportster 1200. With no kickstart has been sitting for 20 years or more. The oil tank has same filter as this video but has a Dipstick on the cap . Should I try to start it and get it running for the 5 mins you said to do in the video and then drain and fill both oil tank and transmissin and primary ?
I dont even have a Ironhead sportster. got an old XLH 1200 Evo sporty but loved to see the diffrences and similarity´s between the two. Live in Northern Europe so these bikes are not a common sight here. Is that an oil cooler on the front and did that come as standard on ironheads?
Hey! Greetings to you in Northern Europe, and thanks for the comment. Yes, it is an oil cooler on the front. It was an add-on. They did not come with oil coolers. The Ironhead sportster is not a hard bike to find for sale here in the states, and they are often surprisingly cheap! Best of luck!
We're in a similar situation. Priority 1. Flush out anything needed, kerosene through the oil bag with return line removed. Priority 2. Time it, the retard it just a bit for this first start. Priority 3. Adjust carb to known good settings or make damb sure no ones touched it. Then kick the daylights out of her. Those old dry clutches are weird. My advice is to go ahead and try to bump start BUT DONT FREAK IF CLUTCH SLIPS. Just go back to kicking, enrich or use starter fluid as needed. This is my boys account so Idk, but I will let you know how it goes. I AM FLUSHING WITH KE0ROSENE TONIGHT, then I am going to inspect check valve as it was a suggested issue before crash and blow out oil lines. To head as they are easy to remove. Then I will flush it a0gain with kerosene, then open the drain ports and oil bag and maybe blow some air around and let it sit for a day. Tomorrow I will keep adding oil to maintain 1/2 the bag in between trying to kick start. . Goal is to have it running by 2022 and rideable by March. MAIN FOCUS IS GETTING IT RUNNING, I flush so I know there's no harmful debris first, but f the clutch, f the brakes, f the linkage, f everything not needed to safely start and idle your bike. THIS INCREASES YOUR DIAGNOSIS POWER AND SHT WORKS DIFFERENTLY AT ~1000rpm

I like how he did the oil change in his living room on the wood floor
I was noticing the fancy floor.
This may be one of the most down to earth and cool guys on the planet. Keep up the great work on these videos!

Always change your oil, in the house on a polished wood floor.
Now will this process remove the oil from where the flywheels are at at the crank. Seem like some old oil gets left behind.
Thanks brother. I was looking in the '67 XLH service manual and it called for weights 58, 75, and 105 if
I the case of Sportster 1982 does it have the oil exchange vent as well? (Or we can use formula+ on primary for example)
I also have an 82. Man I think so because all the videos I see the transmission and primary are 2 birds with 1 stone.
The copper washer can be heated to red, then cooled in water. It softens it as if it were new.
