Metallica and other groups were the support acts for the headliners, ACDC from Australia. I watched the whole concert but the quality of the filming was not good. The Soviets didn't have any real experience of filming rock concerts so didn't have the cameras positioned correctly. Plus, the organisers had originally only planned for around 500,000 so when 1.6 million turned up... they were shocked. It was a free concert put on by the Russian Government to try to please the people. Three months later, the USSR officially collapsed and imploded. An historical time.
I know Metallica members have said Blue Oyster Cult was a band they "grew up on". They even covered "Astronomy". And since the 70s, Blue Oyster Cult also had that type of intro music before taking the stage. I wonder if Metallica got the idea from their....mentors.

This was great! Really liked the group of friends watching the performance.
I saw metallica in 1988 and I didn't know much about them but they blew my mind. Best most energetic concert I ever saw.
the closest estimate that been conducted by attendance professionals is there was an estimated 1.7 million people attending this
I saw this same show stateside 7 times, it was F'KING AMAZING to be alive and 19 years old
I know Metallica members have said Blue Oyster Cult was a band they "grew up on". They even covered "Astronomy". And since the 70s, Blue Oyster Cult also had that type of intro music before taking the stage. I wonder if Metallica got the idea from their....mentors.
And nobody shot or stabbed anyone! All those people....together united, love of fans
This is a great compilation video and great for the small channels featured.
I'm subscribed to Kabir Considers, but I'm going to check out these other channels, including yours.
Good on ya.
thank you very much
Thing is that on those years, when black album came out, this frenetic around Metallica, was all around the Globe. Them and Guns were on top of the world. Everywhere they go, they would be treated like kings.
Ah the good old days without phones no one recording just enjoying the moment.
It has been reported to be 1.6 million people, but some folks think it was even more.
"How do you go to the bathroom"?
You pee where you stand.... It's rock and roll.
so long as you’re not crowd surfing! lol
@@speakyourmind8621 Crowd surf pee is not good.. Never do that.. Ha!
I was minus 6 when this happened, it must’ve been a hell of an experience
Wouldn't be surprised if this came near to shutting down Moscow's power grid, those towers in the distance are speakers.
Those Helicopters are rescue, this was performed at an Airbase.
Madonna just had 1.6 million in Rio on the beach. Rare concerts with that many people. Unreal.
@@jimleinonen7096 yeah, at Copacabana beach. that is the same place Rod Stewart set the all time record with an estimated 3.5 million. those are all crazy numbers.
i remember this concert. i was in america sleeping and it shook me out of bed
1.6 Million there. WoW!
Damn fine job on my favourite kind of reaction vid. Subbed!
ditto...
thank you very much, I appreciate it
AC/DC's iconic Live in Donington concert video was shot at the same festival. Would have loved to be there.
Para los que vivimos ese concierto morimos y fuimos al cielo del metal y del rock todas las grabaciones y fotografías que se realizaron las tenemos como un tesoro familiar algo que no tiene precio
first ever concert rock concert with stars from abroad in the Soviet Union... so insane.. and just months later it would collapse... historical moment there. I have watched the whole documentary about it. And too bad I was young back then to attend it.
The entire Black album by Mettalica is awesome, there is a reason it's the best seeling metal album of all time..
Love how they go from hip-hop style chin popping to full head banging
Russian soldiers: We are seriously outnumbered, comrade. So fuck it, we dance for freedom!🤟🏾
You totally read that in a Russian accent 😂
When the greatest live band ever sets the stage 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Seen both Metallica and Led Zeppelin, hands down Zeppelin was a better, but not bigger concert at the fabulous forum in Inglewood smoked a lot of bud at the concert. All my friends gave me weed to take, about 20 joints a few were oilers, and a thi stick joint
I saw them 15 years ago and it was the greatest show that I have ever been to. These guys have been doing this for about 4 decades and are still kicking ass
Just imagine how they felt walking out to see that amount of people, i bet no matter how drunk or high non of them forgets that! 😂
They felt that crowd before they ever layed eyes on them
Joke is that there are still people trying to get out of the parking lot
This concert was so special because it was the very band from the US to play after the fall of the USSR.
Footnote: Metallica has played on every continent on Earth.
Antarctica? Really I don't think so
@@mikeboyer1735look it up 😁
@@mikeboyer1735 they did, he did not place that footnote for no reason. Just look it up.
I wish I could have been there. That would have been an epic show. There were over 1,000,000 people at that concert. I can't even begin to fathom the size of the moshpit at that concert.
Lex doing "we're off to never never land" is the way this song is meant to be felt!
That's insane 1.6 million people but , if it was going to happen METALLICA would be the most likely
The greatest music performance in history no matter what music you are into.. this is the supernova of music history
Gen X here! We had a lot of aggression in the 80's & 90's ... this helped us break free from our parents generations (you know, the 50's, 60's and the 70's). Exercise without cardio!!!
Safer than a Travis Scott concert
OH HELL YEAH, that is so true!!!
@@speakyourmind8621 no. 54 people died.
this is 90's way of fun, when the only way you can meet and greet your favorite singer is to go to his concert you will feel 😇.
This concert was a 'gift' from the Russian government to the people because someone tried to take over the gov but the people didnt except it!
Imagine that 6 yrs earlier Metallica was an opening band for Ozzy. In 1989 the Berlin wall came down. In 1991, the USSR was falling apart, the Iron curtain was coming down. Metallica, Pantera, AC/DC and the Black Crowes was the first Western music some of these guys had ever heard, even bootleg tapes was worth gold behind the Iron curtain. The military helicopters were real, keeping order but misting water for the tightly packed crowd. It was still pretty warm in September . Especially with 1.6 million people there.
1.6 million in attendance at no charge. It was free.
When that many people show up you are a Rock Star ⭐️
Nah. You're the Rock Star Super Nova!
That is the moment you know as a musician you made it when you play for millions of people-Metallica enter sandman 🎤🎸🎸🎸🥁💯✅🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💭💭💭💭🤘❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
The people at the back need telescopes to see the stage
