    Yo Ian! I'm not in love with my Jade. Had a really hard with QR mode. In fact, I had to tap out. It wouldn't focus in on my QR card. Since you like it so much I'll order another QR card and try again. Anyone who tries it should know that they need to use a pen that does not bleed or smear on the card surface. I got all the way through the dot process twice and smeared some dots ever so slightly and it would not scan(Not Jade's fault). However, once I was able to make a clean card the Jade just would not scan it. It turned into one of those "a couple hours later" ordeals as dumb as that sounds I didn't make it through the scan scan scan process... Anyway, I own it so I'll try again but I might opt for another device with a better camera and Ui. I was super excited about it for a lite hardware device. If it worked well it's perfect for traveling or having some BTC easily accessible but more secure than a phone or hot wallet. ***QUESTION: would you consider Jade more secure than Trezor1 as a usb connected device???

      @IanMajor  8 місяців тому

      Ah interesting - you mean the SeedQR? I will admit I've never actually tried that! Apologies if the video made it seem like I did - I think I said something like it's "cool" but that's based on the concept of it vs. real-world personal experience so please take that with a grain of salt.
      If the SeedQR is giving you issues, I would just set it up "normally" i.e. having it create your wallet seed and going from there. Does that make sense?
      I would view Jade and Trezor as comparably secure devices overall as connected devices.
      Hope that helps!

      I had a similar experience.
      While a cool feature it can add to friction in setting up a wallet.
      Not something I’d recommend to someone setting up a wallet for their very first time.

    Good video and summary of the wallet. I’m very interested in getting a jade someday. Debating on getting some other hardware wallets instead though.
    I still don’t get why someone would do multisig instead of single sig plus a passphrase. But maybe I need to learn more about the details.

    • @IanMajor
      @IanMajor  8 місяців тому +1

      Cheers - glad you found the video useful. I tend to fall in the single sig + passphrase > multisig camp as well, but I do think a lot of it is personal preference and situation. I think a lot of people who are terrified of something happening to their one key/backup see multisig setups like Casa, Unchained Capital, and as we saw with Blockstream Green the multisig shield stuff as compelling. I also think there are use cases for groups of people (e.g. a family trust / inheritance, business owners controlling their bitcoin treasury, etc.), and when you can do this in a geographically-separated way with something like Nunchuk as a coordinator it's pretty cool.
      With that said, imho if you're going for 1 and only 1 hardware device to start, I would probably advocate for paying a bit extra and getting something like the Foundation Passport or Coldcard unless you need something that also supports Liquid assets as well.

      @@IanMajor If someone chooses a very complex passphrase that is 20 or more characters long. What kind of ways do you recommend to back that passphrase up? Is there a steel backup plate you recommend? Or something else?

      @@NemoNemoNemo. I don't know man. I like the idea of multiple physical passphrase backup options in the real world. Steel and paper copies in fireproof safe and offsite copies hidden. Just feels like Seed and passphrase needs to stay offline. I get the idea that both have to be compromised online for theft though.

      Hardware devices have a random number generator built-in to their firmware that creates a large random number from which your keys are derived. No need for the internet to accomplish this!

    Ok I am very sure the question Im about to ask is from a place of ignorance. SO please forgive me. But what if... i break or lose my jade and jade has gone out of business and I can no longer buy a replacement to restore my wallet with my passphrase? What then?

    • @IanMajor
      @IanMajor  Місяць тому +1

      Jade uses the BIP39 standard which is nearly ubiquitously used, so you can always restore your funds into a different wallet if Blockstream goes out of business! Just make sure you have your seed phrase and passphrase secure and you’ll be able to recover your funds.

      My favorite hardware wallet is probably the Foundation Passport. ColdCard and Jade are both great as well. Jades are more cost-effective and make great co-signers as part of a multisig setup.

      Unfortunately I don’t think so. What they’re suggesting here is that you’d have to factory reset the device (ie wipe the key from the device), install the latest firmware, and then restore the key to the updated device help.blockstream.com/hc/en-us/articles/4408030503577-Upgrade-Jade-firmware

      UX still has a long way to go on all of these hardware wallets :) The sad fact (imo) is that most people will never self-custody anyway - they'll trust exchanges, banks, and other custodians. But still obviously plenty of room for improvement to hopefully maximize the size of those who do ultimately take self-custody. There's innovation happening that I think will move the needle - a good early example is Ryder: www.ryder.id/
