Dalton: I dropped an Olds 455 in my 4 door Cutlass. On the freeway it would get hot. I learned it was because I omitted the spring that belonged in the lower radiator hose. It would result in the pump pulling the lower hose shut at higher rpm. Once I put the spring in it solved that getting hot problem. I'd bet Pontiacs will do the same thing. Your life will be changed. If you don't have one in there I'd bet it solves your cooling problem on the nice motor you pulled out.

Watching this video reminded me of chasing down an overheating issue on my '64 F-85. We tried a radiator, then a thermostat, then a water pump, then new / better electric fans, then a camshaft... turns out the person who owned it before me decided to dump at least 3 "Coolant Stop Leaks" into the block (because of a leaky core plug), which completely dammed up the coolant passages around the cylinders. Once that was fixed, that engine never ran over 180F, even in hot summer traffic. Keep up the good work, best budget auto channel on UA-cam!
I had the same problem with my 89 F150 Lariat, the gentleman that sold me the truck claimed it had a bad head gasket however when I ran it and traced the leak coming through a rotten freeze plug, after replacing the plugs I thought I was home free but 2 overheats later I finally realized about the stop leak. Need a phenolic carb spacer to stop heat soaking the carb from the bottom. Then, use a closed air cleaner and run drier ducting to the grille so it can only pull air from outside of the engine bay. Did this on my f150 and the difference was startling. There a reason the oems don't use open air cleaners. They just suck all the hot air from the engine bay, and it chokes the engine. I put an IAT to check and the intake temps at 65mph cruise with the open element you could watch the temps rise then feel it start to surge. With the snorkels, it would actually drop in temp on the highway and didn't heat soak at idle in traffic. And this is on an f150 with a much larger engine bay than the Skygoat so on yours it would be even more beneficial 😊
Don't sell the Thunderbird short. They can make for a very nice cruiser. I too am building a '79 Thunderbird, 302/C-4 car and it is almost road ready, only needing some small items. They ride great, and hot ridding is as easy as building a '72-'76 Torino, as they are the same chassis. You can build a big block car out of these using the big block '73 Ranchero motor mounts, radiator and C-6 mount on the crossmember. Then repaint it as an older man's car and shock the competition when you jump on it. All the Torino goodies are a direct bolt on affair. You can have fun with that Thunderbird.
My dad bought one new in November of '79. He's said he surprised quite a few Corvettes and things in the '80s with the stock 351W/FMX. They aren't that fast by modern standards, but they're good highway cars, and for what they are they aren't bad on gas. A 460 was offered earlier in this generation so the proper mounts should exist even without having to hunt around for Ranchero stuff. And supposedly someone in the '90s or early 2000s made an aluminum 460 block capable of being bored and stroked to something like 869 CI... That would really make that 5,000 pound car into a N/A old man sleeper.
My dad put 208k miles on his before parking it in '92 because the gas tank was rusting out and the the freshly rebuilt transmission had a bad leak from a seal the shop forgot to replace. One of these days I'll get around to putting it back on the road... All that seems to have happened in the last 32 years are that the engine and master cylinder both seized up, and there's maybe 3 square inches of body rust in the whole car - predominantly in the pillars where the vinyl top was. The engine did turn by hand one time when it was extremely cold outside while I was there, so with enough soaking of the two rusty cylinders it should come free even in warm weather. He had a dealer replace the engine at 160k and it still has clear crosshatching on the cylinder walls. It also still has the original 1979 dated spark plug wires and valve covers...

Bud's is an institution in Northwest Oklahoma. A college buddy and I spent many, many hours in our youth there pulling parts for my '69 Cougar and his '67 GTO. My best recommendation is to go in the winter, when the grass is shorter and the rattlesnakes are dormant.
We also had cooling issues on some of the cars we worked on with my dad, usually when a car is ran on tap water, or topped off using tapwater the lines get dirty and crudy, and when you fill it up with fresh coolant or dump the old water and refill without cleaning it, all the gunk in the cooling system gets released at clogs up everything. We learned the hard way.

Talking about breaking down in the farmers field reminds me when I was stationed in Millington Tn. in 1976. I had a '66 VW bug . One of the wheel bearings went dry while we were driving around the back roads . With no shoulder to pull off to I pulled into a driveway far enough to get off the road . I jacked it up , pulled off the wheel and was trying to get enough grease into the bearing to get back . I turned around because someone was coming to see who was trespassing , it was a black guy riding a 10 speed bike with 2 dobermans , one on each side of him . He asked if we were ok , I said yes and we'll be gone in a few minutes , he said ok and turned and went back to the house . The 2 friends I was with asked if I knew who that was , I said "no" , they said "That's Ben Vereen" , I said "Never heard of him".

What a great video. I had a crappy day but you and your wonderful family and friends going on this adventure have put a smile on my face. Thank you.
New challenge build a car directly from buds only with there parts and drive it home. How much you wanna bet?
I'm a Az guy born in Tucson. Love watching you guys suffer across the country to have some fun. Couldn't get out this time. But way to hang in and share the fun of the I 10 journey. Rock on D!
Incredible journey! Better make it to Kevin and Mook's wedding with that T-Bird, lest she strings you up by your toes!
Awesome trip, glad to got to see all the subs, cool ass A-Team van, Cody couldn’t hold it, made a new ally, and the kids had fun. Travis is a solid dude. Sounds like fun to me. Good luck going home bro.
55:55 I am fucking dead. I am sick as fuck the last few days, and it hurt to laugh. But felt so damn good
Bud's salvage yard definitely need to go on a bucket list
The most underrated car channel, S-tier.
I never miss a episode of yours ,it just reminds me of so much of the same stuff I did back in the late 50s thank you for being you ,we know who the millionaires are
Thanks man
New game: Take a shot every time they have to stop to fix the SkyGoat....Wow, that beast fought you every step of the way---but you folks do not quit and that is the way. You almost had a "new" engine when you got there, so at least you have a ton of new parts for the next build....yea.....
Had a blast hope to see yall next year thanks for the sweet shot of my rig 1:41:05-6 and to be in the back shot of y’all’s interview to cool man
Have t shirts made for Cody that have a diagonal stripe so it looks like he has a seat belt.
Better yet, get a shirt with an actual piece of seat belt sewn on.
Dalton i always enjoy your videos. They are a variety of working on vehicles plus sharing knowledge like how taking the back roads and enjoying life without a set agenda is a good way to enjoy life.
I have a lot of respect for you
I watched an 1:24 minutes of this crazy trip to only have "The Thing" blurred out??? Shame on you Dalton
Don't ever stop doing this. This is so awesome to watch. I envy you. Awesome cars, awesome meetups and don't ever get rid of Jim. He is amazing.
Greetings from the Netherlands!
Awesome video Dalton As always VGG is a class act he's a really good guy. Hope the T bird gets you home safely
The Holly goat is the best car I have ever seen . I keep watching the videos of the build and the road trips . I can't get enough of that car
How come you're not viral yet?!
He has been at least once with the holey goat.
Good question indeed
Must have been vaccinated 😏
He is, but just with his real fans.
He hasn’t gone viral yet because his channel is similar to a pot of homemade beef stew. You have to let it simmer for a bit before the flavors are fully developed. 😄
56:27 I have the exact same tool set. Got it for $160 on sale one time, and have only broken the 3/8th ratchet. Love that set, it’s gotten me through many of shit boxes
Ever notice how the FORD on the trip never gave any problems its always the GM PRODUCTS
Atleast the GTO the 400 came out of survived a fire and made it 200 miles home without a hitch
Mr Super Clean! Back at it again. Wow, I missed you guys. I was needing a pole barn video all week. But it came today thank god.
Awesome! Love these videos Dalton. Thanks Man!
My pleasure!
Around of applause 👏 for those too guys that help a fellow hotroder get back on the road ❤ 👍BTW loved the junk yard content 😊
I love seeing Dalton's whole crew on a trip together.
JD is developing a sense of humor much like you and your brother and his mechanics abilities are impressive, your doing a great job Fathering him. God bless, love your channel ❤
An epic tale of laughter, tears, and hope. I admire your tenacity and family spirit. I always learn about fixing cars and adapting to problems on your channel. 😀
Needed some of that Clark Griswald Teflon spray for your saucer😅
I really love this. Y’all hang out and swimming and at the playground It really shows what family values are really like.
@5:20 I absolutely LOVE the reckless abandon-if that didn't go somewhere you wanted it to, there was no stopping it! LOL!
Watched the WHOLE darn video...and glad I did. You and your pals are great problem solvers. Thanks for all the off highway footage. Very entertaining.
I like the channel. Started watching about a yr ago. My buddy Paul would say “ its like shit we would do, but the guy is really smart”.
You have the right attitude about a lot of things in life.
I really love you are using old school technology. Thats why I love this channel.
You know, I started watching because of the Holey Goat build. I kept watching because of the interactions you have with your family. And I'm excited to keep watching because not only do you keep working on cool cars, your family makes it into more of your videos, and you *drive* these old cars in the grand ol' style of The American Road Trip. You've kept something that feels like it's been lost, and it's pretty great to see.
