Had to pull the heads off my 95 Z28, because of a blown head gasket. I know that sounds far fetched, that an LT1 would ever blow a headgasket, but it did. 😂 My Buddy, who i got the car from, built it about 10 years ago. He sent the block and heads off to some race engine builders down in Alabama, to have them line hone the block, and shave & port the heads. Then he put it back together with forged internals and chromoly rings. Along with a hogleg cam. It ended up being 12.5 to 1 compression. He put it back in the car, and took it to the dyno. It layed down 427 whp, with a safe, conservative tune. He put a hard 2500 miles on the car, that included several drag strip passes, and numerous sprays of nitrous. Then it blew a head gasket. He was so aggravated with it, that he parked it in the yard, and didnt touch it anymore. There it sat from 2014, until May or June of this year, when we flat towed it here. Said all that to say, when he was building it back in 2014, he set the goal, that he was going to make some passes at the drag strip in it, before they closed that season. So after several delays getting it back together, by the time he got to installing the heads, he was out of time. The head gaskets he had ordered, somehow didnt show up when they were supposed to. He got impatient and used a cheap set, that he had in his shop. That were spares from another project, years earlier. Then, he re-used the factory head bolts. 🫣 Anyway, we pulled the heads off after i got it, had them cleaned up and checked out at the machine shop, for my peace of mind. I decided to give it its best shot at holding up as long as possible, by collecting the best parts, a little at a time, when i can afford them. For the first time in my life, I went ahead and splurged on ARP head, intake, and header bolts, to go back together with. They're a little hard on the ol' billfold, but I know its worth it. At least I hope it is. I cant wait to get it back together, and hear it fire up again!
I had a 66 Chevelle I installed a 1968 Pontiac 350 / 4 speed (M21 Muncie), 3.55 posi 12 bolt rear from an SS 396. I ran a flat tappet cam 286 adv. duration about .500" lift, 1966 389 heads, Edelbrock P4B intake, headers, Mallory distributor, and a Holley 650 double pumper. I also bought all of the engine stuff from a friend who destroyed his 66 goat - for $200... At New England Dragway, it ran a mid 12 at 110 MPH. I figure with the stuff you're running, it will be in the low 12s to high 11s.
When he says “go check out” when referring to his older videos, you really should. PBG has a lot of great older content that is worth watching. They have lower views and likes but are just as good as todays stuff.

Best radiator flush in the world. White vinegar. Pour a gallon of it in and top off with water. Drive it around for awhile. Drain and flush with water. Then fill it with coolant/antifreeze or water since you’re going to the track.
As a semi retired automotive engineer, I often added the note “hammer to fit” In my designs. When making it home, and repairing something, are two different things.
Hi Dalton, For head gasket / head sealing issues. You can use the play-dough method to verify clearance issues. Just like Plasti-gauge. Once you see the gaps... it all make sense.
The old guy i saw spray painting his head gaskets swore by the high temp barbecue paint. He swore after it "cooked", it hardend and made them nearly indestructible. He was spraying a small block in an s10 with a 200 shot, and driving it to and from the track an hour away. So i thought it was pretty legit. Worked well on my 4.3, and my 2.2 s10
It's so "relaxing" to see PMD engines worked on, something I know and love. The TQ wrench ... I had a debacle with one involving Aluminum heads. Always enjoy your videos, the good, bad and ugly of them. I'm also Pontiac loyal, so you got me the entire journey.
I believe the gaskets they suppied needed to be used. Reason being is the old style are not made for iron to aluminum. All that aside this channel is awesome!

27:53 I found a metal hood prop retainer sitting atop an intake valve in my Ford Duratec 3.0L during a tune-up this past spring. It explains that nasty noise I would get whenever I pushed the pedal into the floor of my Freestyle. 😂 (It's the daily beater car.) My guess was that the car had been in a shop at some point with the intake manifold off and a couple guys were goofing around (as you do in a shop), and somebody flung some random small parts in his buddy's direction without verifying that they all hit the floor. And nobody had thought to stuff rags into the open ports...
Sorry about the 350 being junk, but you deserve a big block for duct tape 👍. Budget build on a tight timeline, what could go wrong. You'll need a vacation after this one😂
The Pontiac 350/389/400/421/428/455 are all externally the same size, the 421/428/455 have larger mains but that's the only difference, the only "small" Pontiac was the lower deck 265/301.
Man an average hot rod guy trying to do this would be screwed I feel. You are very experienced and things are difficult but not to where you cant figure it out. I feel this job would be way over most peoples capabilities. Great watching all this. Love it.
Built 3 motors a 350, 377, and a 360 using a buddy’s brand new fairly high dollar digital torque wrench in the span of about a month. The 350 started knocking on break in. We pulled and tightened a loose rod with a different wrench. I figured it was a goof on my part. that motor is still running in the corvette. The 360 was installed a couple months later and shot a rod completely through the oil pan while at idle, figured it the used motor had a bad rod we didn’t catch. The 377 blew the head gaskets at duct tape drags ‘22 and a few months ago after pulling it out of hibernation it also had a rod come loose and dust a piston. You couldn’t pay me enough to trust a digital torque wrench again.
I borrowed a fairly nice click wrench with a digital display one time, and it let me snap an intake manifold bolt on a Ford 4.6 while I was thinking, "it should have clicked by now." I had already done several at that setting, and after that bolt snapped I verified that I had it set right. It just decided to stop clicking... Luckily I was able to pull the intake and grab the bolt with vice grips, and somehow it didn't damage the plastic intake. I pulled out my grandfather's Craftsman beam torque wrench and returned the clicker, and in the several years since that old and slightly rusty one hasn't let me down yet.
@@kylertinkler1860 There's a pretty good chance that the one I have hadn't been off of its hook in my lifetime, until my grandfather took it down to give it to me. I did find it funny that the tolerances for its lifetime warranty are tighter than the "normal variation" range on that clickey.
@@Bumblebee4788 Absolutely. I have a 6" extension on a deep socket that fits nicely onto the end of the handle of an old 3/4 drive Craftsman ratchet that already has chipped teeth. Even with an old 15/16 socket on the crank bolt of the very stuck 351W in my dad's '79 Thunderbird (original owner, 208k miles, parked in '91 or '92), bouncing my weight on the extension didn't cause any further damage to the ratchet. On the other hand, I once broke a modern 10 mm socket while trying to screw a coil pack bolt into a tapped hole in a plastic intake manifold (Chevy 3.6 LFX). I wasn't even using a ratchet at the time, I was just turning it by the shaft of the little 1/4 drive extension when it went. After the abuse it's taken from me, I really wonder what happened to that 3/4 ratchet to chip off almost half of the teeth in it.
Also I have to say that your son is awesome you can’t get most kids to get outside and off their electronics long enough to help please tell him that for me and remember he is learning things that will help him through his whole life. much respect for all three of yall
A little bit Joe dirt in the back, to funny lol.😂😂😂😂. The humor is top notch on this channel, plus Jess and your son are just as sarcastic in their own way, which just makes everything so comical. You do a great job of showing the good and the bad, plus you give some of these younger people the help to go out and save some of these old car's. If you had to do every car you touched the whole tear down restoration, there just wouldn't be enough hour's for you to do it. I'm restoring an old 54 M38A1 Jeep Willys, and it's my last project because I'm old and cobbled up a bit, and it takes a lot of time to detail every part, the rust protection, upgrading the whole rig with fresh everything takes time and money. You actually do body work that lasts many year's, we've seen it in other video's, using mesh or other filler along with short strand fiberglass filler to keep it looking pretty solid many year's later. Thanks for keeping it real. G-d bless.
The right person to blame for parts stores having junk parts is whoever is in charge of sourcing them. They chose the cheapest grade available, they chose to do no quality checks themselves and to pay for no checks at the supplier. Of course they did this to give the customer what they wanted, cheap stuff, competitive with what you get off Amazon/eBay. Everyone is doing it, summit, jegs, Holley themselves. It’s the race to the bottom!
So true. Even Edelbrock went to shit after Vic Jr died. But I hear the quality is improving again. The one I can't figure out is Comp Cams: LOTSA UA-camrs and MT types use Comp stuff, probably cuz they get it free. But I've seen MANY commenters report that their cams went flat, or their roller lifters were no good, yada yada. Who do ya believe??

If the block was checked with a straightedge and was good, I would have used the new Butler metal head gaskets for those aluminum heads. Back in the '80s, we had all kinds of problems with those fibre type.
Good morning from Cape Cod ⛵ first off, Happy 31st Birthday Dalton 🎂🎁 I like your foreshadowings, unfortunately you are correct 😭 Damn Dude, that 350 really sounds awesome I'm really sorry the head gasket didn't seal. 85 was the last time I put headers on a Pontiac, I put blackjack shorty headers on a 68 firebird with a 400 and they just popped right on with no problem. Great episode with guest appearance of Jess and Jim with hard working JD to keep his Dad between the ditches. This episode was such good entertainment and sorry about the blown head. You do great work.
I really admire you for toughing it out. Sticking with it no matter what issues arise building the car. Personally, I think you should 're-deck' the top to the block. The block just needs to sit on the machinist grinding table before they can pass the overhead grinding disk (made for re-decking blocks). You put in so much money, like A LOT of money, why throw all that away ? . The thing is, if you find another engine, how do we know the deck isn't warped??? You'll be going down rabit holes!! I say have the block RE-DECKED. i dont think you even need the remove the pistons since they're not going to interfere in the operation (maybe the crankshaft has to be removed to have that absolute flat botton for it to sit properly on the decking machine. I find that engine really looks awesome!! and even with the blown gasket it sound like a muscle car
DUDE! That massive Double Pumper carb is tops! - Edlebrock has a new Double Pumper Carb out now that Holley is pushing the EFI stuff through your earholes. I'm running it on a 78 bronco and its pretty fantastic.
Dalton, you are a hero among the real life wrench your ability to just get it done no matter what challenge presents itself that is the simplest way to build these machines. keep up the good work.
I can totally understand why you would think that the NOS head gasket would be the best choice. I think if you had used the butler performance head gaskets you would have had better results using head gaskets hand picked specifically for aluminum cylinder heads. Aluminum heads move around alot on an unlike metal block. I'm not an expert but my opinion is that the butler head gaskets and proper cylinder head bolt torque will correct your problem and save that engine. It ran nicely and didn't appear to oil smoke under load. The engine has potential to run many more miles assuming you don't have any cracks in the block.
Happy Birthday Dalton! Cheers and many more! You and your videos never disappoint, some of the best on YT. And a big shout out to JD and Jess, awesome family support.

It's like a great Mel Brooks movie you got to watch very carefully or you'll miss those puns 😂😂
Thanks for long form content!
You bet man thanks
Thee best content and absolutely the most value for money I have ever come across.
You, JD, and Jess have the best humour. Keep doing what you're doing it is world class.
Torque settings on alloy heads are so important, hopefully you will sort it , no more Chinese junk !! Thanks for sharing your adventures 👍💨💨

I appreciate that!
JD & DALTON ARE THE BEST FATHER AND SON TEAM! Two peas in a pod for those two. They sure know how to have fun and have a good work flow. They support each other as best the can when working on these cool projects. I look forward to each video because they are sooo entertaining. What a great video 📸. Thanks.

As an Engine Machinist I was disturbed by what I witnessed, however it was great fun, love what you do!
When he says “go check out” when referring to his older videos, you really should. PBG has a lot of great older content that is worth watching. They have lower views and likes but are just as good as todays stuff.
I love a Pontiac guy!! Butler is an amazing company to work with!! Keep turning those wrenches!! Love the way you and your family do things!!

Best radiator flush in the world. White vinegar. Pour a gallon of it in and top off with water. Drive it around for awhile. Drain and flush with water. Then fill it with coolant/antifreeze or water since you’re going to the track.

When making it home, and repairing something, are two different things.
Almost a 2 hour video? What a treat 💪🏻
Thank you for all you do. It's great to watch you all thanks again
1:01:59 Happy Birthday Dalton 🥳🎂🎉
It's so "relaxing" to see PMD engines worked on, something I know and love.
The TQ wrench ... I had a debacle with one involving Aluminum heads.
Always enjoy your videos, the good, bad and ugly of them. I'm also Pontiac loyal, so you got me the entire journey.
If you use a knife sharpening stone on the head mounting surface of the block it works really good, I’ve done it many times
I believe the gaskets they suppied needed to be used. Reason being is the old style are not made for iron to aluminum. All that aside this channel is awesome!
Man what a kick in the nuts! Sorry man I know the pain I feel for you and JD! I know you will overcome this obstacle. Can't wait to see what you do next!
Almost 2 hours of PBG!? Amazing. Happy birthday!! I ordered some merchandise to support the Sky Goat!

I found a metal hood prop retainer sitting atop an intake valve in my Ford Duratec 3.0L during a tune-up this past spring.
It explains that nasty noise I would get whenever I pushed the pedal into the floor of my Freestyle. 😂 (It's the daily beater car.)
My guess was that the car had been in a shop at some point with the intake manifold off and a couple guys were goofing around (as you do in a shop), and somebody flung some random small parts in his buddy's direction without verifying that they all hit the floor.
I am a huge fan of air shocks so I'm glad to see you putting them on the Buick.
Step #1 - look cool ✅
Man an average hot rod guy trying to do this would be screwed I feel. You are very experienced and things are difficult but not to where you cant figure it out. I feel this job would be way over most peoples capabilities. Great watching all this. Love it.
I tried walking through a screen door tonight.
Damn, Dalton killed two engines in a row. Hopefully the third time is a charm. I’ll see you in Tucson!
@@Stephens_offroad_and I switched back to the old Sears branded beam style that’s been kicking around my house since before I was born.
Old school tools rule👍
One of the most entertaining channels in all of UA-cam. Relatable and real. This is another video that doesn't disappoint. Appreciate the content
Also I have to say that your son is awesome you can’t get most kids to get outside and off their electronics long enough to help please tell him that for me and remember he is learning things that will help him through his whole life. much respect for all three of yall
I'll pass it along, needless to say he's well aware that he's different then other kids
G-d bless.
O'riely's: "Your lack of faith disturbs us. No sponsorship for you."

VGG is aghast at your heresy. Oh, well. Looks like I'll be buying a few new t-shirts to help what little I can.

1:24:00. I just love it when he insults parts which are bad.
I put the shorties cuz they matched the existing exhaust. Jess, before I forget you're doing some great camera work 👍 until the next video ✌️🇺🇲

The engine has potential to run many more miles assuming you don't have any cracks in the block.
the "lose the shop" running gag never gets old ! and also, the comedic side make for great balance with the serious stuff ! well done !
