  • On this episode of 'Combat Reacts' I review a video of Portuguese Paratroopers running combat operations in Central Africa. It's always interesting looking at foreign militaries and seeing how they operate. And because Central Africa is somewhere I've actually been many times, this was all the more interesting to review.

    I served in 3rd SFG, 10th SFG, USASOC, 19th SFG, and the CIA as a GRS officer protecting Case Officers overseas. I have a Bachelors degree in Homeland Security/Crisis Management and I appreciate you all tuning in!

    Hello Mike
    This video is from the 4th National Force deployed in the Central African Republic (the 9th National Force is currently there), from November 2018, it is about the fighting that Portuguese paratroopers were involved with one of the various militias for 5 hours in the city of Bambari. The militias had illegally occupied the city and were terrorizing the local populations, paratroopers as a UN rapid intervention force were called in to liberate the city when local forces and other UN contingents were unable to contain the violence, in which they were successful. In fact, the Portuguese paratroopers managed to pacify many cities and break up a large part of the militias, having been highly praised for their actions.
    The weapons they were using were HK G3, but in the meantime the army replaced them with FN SCAR. The support helicopter was Pakistani. Among the Portuguese forces was also a JTAC team from the Portuguese Air Force.
    I hope I could have helped to clarify the video a little more, if you need any more information I am at your disposal. QNPVSC.

    As a former portuguese army officer I cant tell you that they use m84 carl gustav (wish we had at4) and those rifles are H&K G3 7.62mm NATO rifles (not FN FAL). Often a rifleman will carry a rifle that is actually older than him (I was born in 1974 and carried a 72 G3). Mostly because they simply wont wear out and continue to serve reliably (although outdated). Great video!

      Always appreciated the G3, a 6.8 remake from scratch of this design platform might be a viable path, its iron sight remains seconded to none, 700 yards are easily covered with an experienced shooter, the moduling remains superior to several recent platforms too, as I'm able to assess

      Those are modified HK G3. I don't think these units are from the 70's, even though this is a very modular gun, and have the ability use a more modern module,
      They are good guns, but outdated. Not really the best for an assault gun. They are heavy and have kind of a big recoil.
      Very reliable though.
      Good for long distance shooting. You can aim well at 800 yards. It's a 7.62 mm calibre
      Some Norwegian and Swedish troops use them too.
      It's a German design but a lot of countries in the world have the rights to produce them, making it a very affordable gun..

    The Paras used until recently the Galil 5.56mm ( 30 round mags ) as the organic weapon, but for this mission had to switch to the older H&K G3 7,62mm ( 20 round mags ), with minor improvements / updates, due to rotations with the Comandos, with whom they share similar missions. And that was the weapon they had to use....it was not well accepted by them at the time. Now, all of the portuguese army is using the FN-SCAR. Portugues Marines still use modified H&K G3.

    JTACs use clock direction in relation to the predetermined bullseye overlay established by the pilot, meaning no matter who is communicating what, 3 o clock will be the same direction for both pilot and ground guys regardless of what direction they’re facing. It’s particularly used to prevent enemy interception of radio traffic and knowing where the next air strike will be. 3 o clock from where? That position and direction is only known by the pilot and JTAC and determined pre-mission.

I was also a fan of the ballistic shield, and I think the "if it looks silly but it works it isn't silly" rule applies to some of the other footage as well. A bit disjointed overall, the video I mean, kind of jumps around, but all in all interesting and educational. Enjoyed your insights, and like they say in the movie Blood Diamond, TIA Mike.

    Their's primary weapon used to be the G3, but a few time ago portugal started to use the FN Scar L and H, the CTOE ( Portuguese Rangers ) use the HK416 / G36 and the Portuguese Marines use the G36 too
    Portugal have a super strong Special Forces but the equipment they used to have it wasn't at their level, back in a few years they was very limited, fortunately we had a big equipment upgrade in the past years

    Awesome weapon, but not my first choice in CQB.

    The 416 is a little bit more CQB suitable.

      Haha yeah, portuguese paras before ''the'' update used some sort of Galils in 5.56, but for this specific mission they were using some modernized G3's which was the standard rifle for the portuguese military. Recently we got about 15.000 SCARs, from MK16s to the infamous MK20. In the video you could also notice some of them using FN Minimis. Even then, I think I spotted an FN FAL along the way, and that's not rare to spot at all nice here in Portugal we call ourselves extremely ''desenrascados'' which derives for the verb desenrascar, basicly a way to say that no matter the situation we'll always find a way around to solve the problem or task, taking advantage of everything we find along the way.

    I also noticed that their shield guy is almost at a 45° angle which helps with deflection and if there is any penetration the bullet has to go through more material before it goes through. Not a bad idea we've done the same thing with our tanks in world war II to minimize weight and still have the same kind of protection.

    Just to help clarify some points in the video:
    - The clip version that someone sent you had just a low quality compared to what was shown by the Portuguese media.
    -The main rifle of the Portuguese Paratroopers that was used by the time of the clip was the AK4D (Swedish modernized version of the HKG3);
    - That moment where a Portuguese Air Force JTAC is requesting Air Support, he isn't requesting an Air Strike to drop bombs "Danger Close" to his position but just giving instructions to the Pakistan MI-8 pilot so his gunner could fire against some rebels in a house at 9 o'clock from the helicopter position.
    Cheers

    • @pedromiguelalmeida4446
      @pedromiguelalmeida4446 2 роки тому +3

      no it was no the AK4D. Portugal produced their own HK G-3 under licence for it's colonial wars - some were upgraded, like with spuhr kits (mainly navy and marines) - so the Portuguese Armed Forces have in stock about 300.000 G3, models made by FBP (where they were produced, Fábrica Braço de Prata) HK since the first ones to the G3A3 (fixed stock version) as well as the G3A4 (kind of telescopic buttsock). Most of Portuguese Paratroopers here seem to be using the HK G-3A4 (which make sense for paratroopers, since the telescopic stock makes the gun smaller to carry in confined spaces, including transport planes). However the video seems a bit old, at least a couple of years, since forces in Congo are using in the URO VAMTAC STC5 and not HMMWV. Guns changed too, standart issue in the army, and in this missions, are the FN SCAR Mk2 L STD, SCAR Mk2 H STD in limited use for DMR role (probably very few H PR standing in sniper role), FN Minimi Mk3 5.56x45mm; vehicle mounted Browning M2 .50 and Hk MG-3, the late to be replaced with the FN Minimi Mk 3 7.62x51. JTAC uses HK-416A5. Only the Navy and Marines still use the G-3, with some numbers pimped with spuhr kits (which for me is throwing money away, with it the Navy could have bought brand new M4, CZ Bren 2, or even a small but sufficient SCARS to be on the same page with the army - since the Air Force made other, good, but different choices). In conclusion, Portugal Armed Forces never ever used swedish AK4D (their version of the HK G3A3).

Anything "personal" isn't shared. Now how can something funded by the taxpayer can be considered "personal information" I don't understand.

      But as for the rest, yes, our legislation is a lot more restrictive than in the US. No freedom of information act here, that’s for sure. A lot of things from the Colonial War (1961-1975) are still classified, for example.

I spent probably like 15/20 min to find it and had to word it in a specific way to do so. The information is out there but it isn't easy to find. As for the FOIA, there's a "FOIA" in Portugal, the thing is that most of the information comes higly redacted and as I said before, there's alot of things you don't have access to.
