  • On this episode of 'Combat Reacts' I review helmet cam footage of US soldiers reacting to contact in Afghanistan. I've formatted this series as an AAR for the public, not just some random reacts video. I hate to be the armchair quarterback, but if one video can save ONE LIFE, I've done my job.
My Background: I am a former Special Forces SGM that started my career as an 11B or basic infantryman, and became a Special Forces 18B weapons specialist and served 9 combat rotations overseas. I served as a Sniper, Assaulter, JTAC, TSE expert, Free Fall jumpmaster and more.
I served in 3rd SFG, 10th SFG, USASOC, 19th SFG, and the CIA as a GRS officer protecting Case Officers overseas. I have a Bachelors degree in Homeland Security/Crisis Management and I appreciate you all tuning in!

Vietnam era vet. I’ve heard that charge into an ambush tactic military malpractice advice before. Actually we never did it.
Like here, we laid down suppressive fire, popped the blooper and tried to flank.
Our radio guy stayed down and communicated while at the same time watching our back.
I was the corpsman on a 17 man CAP team and we ran patrols, ambushes and raids every day or every night near the DMZ. I went out every night for a total of 25 months.
The other 16 guys were divided into four teams of four men and they went out two nights in a row and rested six… I was the fifth man on each team.
We always had a six to ten man contingent of locals (PF’s) with us. Their Top had fought against the French at Dien Bien Phu in 1954… excellent soldier.
I came up with the idea of counting the remaining rounds in the PF’s M-1 carbines after firefights to see if they had actually fought.
I worked as a contractor for twelve years afterwards and earned enough money for college and law school… while contracting.
I did mostly high risk private jobs for individuals and ngo’s.

Wouldn't you want to do it (assaulting into the ambushers) like a reverse peel to do it correctly? Like advancing on a position by bounding very quickly? Or was this technique proven to be a bad one over there? But I would think it would create a small salient and you could be cut off. I was an 11B but in the 90s and never got deployed. We always trained to assault into a near ambush.

The first time I threw a frag at basic, the range guy that was at the cover with me got some shrapnel in his back plate. He was ducking too, just not low enough. He wasnt hurt, but just that inch or two of exposure was enough to get hit by the shrapnel from it. I'll never forget that... so I obviously always respected the frags power from that point on.

So do we know what kind of combat unit this is? Just curious I had a "similar" situation (in regards to intent and situational awareness not being understood). We got hit at our TCP (traffic control point) and had a wounded. We were still taking fire from the city but needed to set up a lz for the med vac.
A little back story about this TCP we were required to search female civilians so we had a detachment of female marine. Not to trigger anyone but they were not from combat mos so this was most of their first time really employing there weapons let alone being in a fire fight. soo keep this in mind.
We were still taking very heavy fire from the city so the majority of our force needed to focus on the city so i was sent with some smoke to take the female marines to the back berm and secure an lz while they transported the wounded from the front line and tried to prevent an overrun. So again not to trigger anyone but it was me and one other infantry marine with about 8 non combat female marines. They were scarred and had more adrenaline pumping through there veins then they are used to and had no official combat training outside of basic and MCT.
My orders were very simple we are under siege at the moment anyone approaches wave them off, fire a warning, if they keep coming drop them that is it. and i found my self like this guy having to constantly be screaming shit almost the entire time because the battle space was not being controlled and i was constantly being asked questions, on top of the fact that i had my head next to a 240 that just let off 2000+ rounds and could not hear shit I can understand this guys frustrations.
haha sorry kinda a long rant but if this was a combat platoon they may have been green and this was a lot of there first time being engaged in country, or it could have been a non-combat platoon and as explained above it can be difficult. I found myself having to be running back and forth down the berm "taking myself" out of the potential fight in order to basically teach simple tactics and observations on the fly.
and for some reason if anyone was invested in my little story the female marine gunny (e-7) was very understanding and appreciative that i was more patient yet demanding of them and the marine shot made a full recovery.

Hey my dude, this is the first video I've seen.
To start, thank you for your service man. I don't support the war, but I do support you and your brothers and sisters. It's not about the fight, it's that you stepped forward and volunteered. For that I want to say that I truly appreciate you, and I sincerely hope/wish the heroes that didn't come back are never forgotten. Thank you again sir.
Ok, so also wow on the video dude. Like the shear amount of battlefield knowledge you have is amazing, true blue warrior. My little civi mind is blown. Sitting here listening and thinking of scenarios lol, like I know how I'd handle real combat. I've been shot at, but no one knows how they'd react to the real thing. But, I fucking love it man, you make shit make sense. Appreciate you.

    • @jacobl6714
      @jacobl6714 2 роки тому

Hey just out of curiosity what thing(s) made you decide you don't support the war? I'm torn, myself, because the a-holes in suits that are in government and the like who are rich and will never have to send a young son or daughter off to get killed in the wars that they create/enter us into....that really gets to me. Just like how judges are allowed to sentence people to life, without themselves ever having even the risk of finding out what it's like to be a grown human locked in a box : /
But at the same time the actual boys n girls on the ground have done such an amazing job. Getting saddam and bin laden and animals like that. More importantly there are little afghani, pakistani, iraqi girls who can go to a school. It seems like such a thing to take for granted over here, but they get to go to school. No matter how sleazy the actions and people who started this war are, that makes me so grateful. They are learning, they are being around their peers, they are growing up and being able to drive, able to educate themselves and learn about the wider world, hell they can walk to the store without needing some bearded savage who views them as property traipse them around like they're walking a dog
So I guess what I mean is, could you add some context and nuance to what you stated? I don't disagree, and I share the same sentiment for the most part, but it makes me so proud of humanity to see some of the things we (well them, really, but we as a country we as a species lol) have accomplished : ]

The man whose camera we're seeing this through is definitely in a leadership position and experienced. And he probably has some young rookies in his element who haven't gotten used to this yet. It's easy to get overwhelmed by the noise and confusion, and it feels like every bullet is coming right for you when they're usually not. The enemy is nervous and stressed out too, so their shots aren't perfectly aimed either. When you hear those sonic cracks popping in your ears, that's when you know it's too close for comfort ... but you definitely can't keep your head down, because you're letting the enemy move on you and they might eventually work their way to a position that flanks your cover ... and that has to be avoided at all costs.
You can learn a lot about fire and maneuver from combat sports and simulations, but nothing really prepares people for that fear of impending death or bodily harm you get with the real thing. It takes some experience to learn how to think through that.

The video and their reaction is something to learn from. The guy filming blew his assignment. His field of fire was right, in the formation. Their spacing was too tight. Contact came left, returning fire, calling out distance location, getting to cover was first order of business. Training not to blow your assignment, possible doming your team is the first lesson. Before you can return fire you should get on line shoulder to shoulder. Besides what if was an L ambush? Was anyone covering the six and the front direction of movement? It looks like a far ambush just out of hand grenade range. So they couldn't really rush the ambush. I cant think of anything worse than being caught on a bridge. It was a bad situation.

I think a civilian can learn a lot just from watching videos of you and guys like you online. Y’all have a plethora of knowledge and thanks for sharing it with a nobody like myself. I watch you, Shawn Ryan, WPS and a few others that I’ve already learned quite a few tactics from and I’ve tried to incorporate certain things/scenarios in my training. I think a person would be better off watching you guys and getting training from someone like you than looking up the open source military stuff. Which I’ve always been better as a visual learner anyway. Just reading words on a screen isn’t gonna make it through one ear much less out the other lol

There's nothing like hearing that initiation kick off and everybody is scrambling but you.. that final breath when you hear the action begin is where you suppress your adrenaline and stay calm.. overreacting to a situation can lead up to nothing good.. I would say only put bullets down range or return fire when you see where bullets are coming from or flashes or a physical Target as a threat.. these simple training methods of breathing in the midst of action and thinking about your next move sometimes doesn't work.. you have only your adrenaline to rely upon.. remember that nothing about combat is safe.. and I didn't join the military for the money or the travel..🤙

I had a captain that was straight out of tradoc.. he was horrible at doing briefings for training exercises.. he treated soldiers like they were still in basic training.. I was his driver and he didn't listen to me.. one incident was my suggestion to him that either he drive and I walk in front of the vehicle during a field exercise in grass that was over the Humvees front window.. not only did he not take my suggestion but he wasn't wearing his chin strap or his seat belt and we drove into a impact crater pretty much burying the Humvee.. of course he climbed out of the vehicle after his head hit the dashboard and had only but himself to be upset about.. the things that go on in the military behind closed doors that nobody knows about unless the soldier writes home about it..

Enjoy your stuff but you make alot of assumptions about the situation in the video. Stating that they have the tactical advantage. Well you can't be sure of that because you're looking at a video with 80° field of view and you cant see much in it in any case. You have no idea about the situation in the surrounding area and don't know how many are engaging them. Technically we are blind to what their tactical sitiuation was until maybe we get a full battle report. This is my reasoning, deduced from playing 1000s of hours of Milsim and RTS games, I have no real world experience whatsoever so I could be very wrong

I was on a sim range and we were doing CQB. We were contacted from a room and I was covering the rear. Heard " contact " I turned around , made contact and started putting rounds down range till my Sargent stopped me. It was then I realized I almost capped my buddy in the head. Thank God it was only sim rounds but it scared me how fast I reacted before checking my arcs . Never made that mistake again. Great break down Sir thank you

Back in the day 1980s, we only had one radio for a squad size element on foot patrol - and that was for communications to higher - therefore, "screaming" orders over the noise of combat was the only way to communicate to team members, perhaps a boot in the ass if they don't hear you. Did those guys all have radios, what time frame historically was this fight?

Mike agree that this happens in combat, but it’s super bad tactics to start firing like this guy when you have your own guys right in front of you. No judgments here i know things aren’t perfect in an ambush , and Yes it’s important to lay down fire quickly to counter an ambush, but if you do like this guy, then chances are obviously high you’ll shoot one of your own. You Gotta get up on line first (unless you have enough dispersion or elevation to safely open fire). if you can’t get online immediately but the rest of your crew has solid base of fire just hang tight till you can shoot without endangering your own crew

I'm a JTAC, been in both Iraq and Afghanistan. If I wasn't on comms I was putting rounds down range waiting for Air to check on. The most important thing for me is getting the biggest weapon into the fight. Everything is about getting every conceivable tactical advantage. Close Air Support is a game changer in bad TIC(Troops in Contact). Shoot, move, communicate, and dominate your battle space. 🤘
