Great video man keep the information coming.
More to come!
Nearly 15 years ago I taught you a little about wine and oil painting…this goes back to the days of when you worked at the movie theater. Although you have developed a deep appreciation for rum for some time now, I’ve only just become aware of this. Dang, I feel like I arrived late to a cool party! I’m overjoyed that you’ve created this rum channel and I appreciate you being a rum “evangelist.” I’m very impressed by your knowledge and I’m proud of the person you’ve grown to become, makes me wish I had stayed in touch and I regret being short with you the last time we talked.
My recs for a good price point intro to rum are…
Kaniche XO- if you want something a little sweeter
Doorly’s 12 years, for some good oaky flavors
Coruba- great for mixing
Plantation Original Dark- just a solid mixing dark rum
Doctor Bird for some real strong funk
Rhum Clement Agricole Blanc for an intro to Agricole rums
Yiasou!
All great options for sure! And wow…that seems like just yesterday. I still have the painting!
Hit me up!
Wray & Nephew, Smith & Cross, Doorly's, Neisson, El Dorado ftw. The only one we agree on is Chairman's.
Those are all great options as well! Neisson is my favorite Rhum Agricole (Zepol Kare all day!)
Sounds like I should of a high ester and funky episode. I’ve got a few DOKs and a WK (1600 esters from New Yarmouth). Lovely stuff 😋
I’m sad to not see any Don Q or El Dorado. I’d have those on my list for sure
Both are great options too! It’s so hard to pick just 6 though
AE8, Don Q 7, Rum Fire, El Dorado 8, Rhum Barbancourt 5 Star, and then some kind of Rhum Agricole. I don't really like Agricole but every one else does.
Agricole is an acquired taste for sure. I find that the aged rhums are perfect for bourbon and whiskey drinkers to get into rum though 🙌🏼
@therumchampion I've found AE12 and Don Q 7 usually works with whiskey people. I don't actually want to "convert" the whiskey crowd because it seems like half of them don't actually drink anything they just buy bottles, to display like funko pops. A mass migration of whiskey "drinkers" would result in affordable staples ballooning in price. 70 dollar bottles of ED12. Look up what some "premium" bourbon in the 100$+ range used to cost even 10 years ago.
I love your channel, most reviews on rum I've seen on youtube is looking for whiskey profile on rum tasting while you genuinely treat it as its own flavor. 500+ bottles! are you slacking off or you can't find anymore?
Also what is your opinion on the future of haiti rum with the current circumstance?
Thanks so much for the kind words! Rum really is a category unto itself. There are Rum’s that can taste like whiskey. At the same time, there are rooms that taste like nail polish and bubble gum.
And hahaha I have a bunch of rum’s being sent to me on a regular basis. By the end of next month, I should be at 550 bottles. It’s a problem
With Haiti, I think it’s heartbreaking. It’s the first country in the western hemisphere to abolish slavery and was welcomed to the world stage by being shunned. Since the early 1800s, Haiti has been left to its own devices and has struggled.
interesting, UK based so not sure about most but mount gay, Rum Bar and Chairmans's are solid brands though not tried the white overproof rum bar do have a rum bar and love worthy park rums. usually i tend to think what do they want in a rum and start from that, do you like it sweet? if so Bumbu is one of my favourites but it does get some stick in the rum community. another one is do they like odd stuff, something different, if so i recommend Barti Spiced from Wales. Stiggins Planteray (Plantation) Rum is a must have for me and when it comes to "proper" rums I'm now leaning towards Ron Abuelo 7yr old and Ron de Guatemala Botran 15yr old - not sure on price of the latter though. A cheap surprising one for me was Black Magic and another was Pink Pigeon
The mount Gay navy strength I think is a US release, for now. For my palate, I tend to gravitate away from lower proof and sweeter rums. That said, I do love El Dorado!
Also, for people starting out in the rum category, I always advise start with the sweeter and more approachable rum’s, and then work your way up the ladder to the higher proof and weirder flavors.
For example, Chairman’s Reserve Spiced Rum -> Diplomatico Reserva Exculsiva -> Flor de Caña 12 -> Chairman’s Reserve Original -> Doorly’s 12 Year -> cask strength Latin style rum -> foursquare ECS or Privateer -> Jamaican rums -> cask strength St Lucia and Trinidad -> Aged cane juice rhums/rums -> unaged cane juice rums -> grand arome & clairin
I have a Chairmans Reserve single cask that tastes amazing.
I've recently jumped into the world of rum. Bourbon has just gotten ridiculous because of allocation and the secondary market and I'm done with it.
Which do you prefer on the Uruapan, Anejo or Blanco? I picked up the Blanco and i really dig the funky fruit flavors. I'm also a big fan of Rum Fire. I add that to almost all my cocktails.
Glad you’re into rum and now welcome!
I love uruapan and both the Añejo and blanco have their place! Don’t sleep on worthy park Overproof 😉
Of those 6, coruba is the only one I can easily get in Aus, we also get mt gay but I havent seen the navy strength out here yet. Same for rumba, I've tried at a rum event out here but I havent seen it for sale out here yet. The other rums I've never seen in Aus 😔
I’m envious though. I think there are 30 or so rum distilleries in Oz. Within the next few years, I think it’s going to be a dominant rum producer. Especially since ours is one of the largest producers of sugarcane in the world as well.
@@therumchampion i do agree there, we do produce a lot of sugarcane. We have the two major distilleries that everyone knows about, the rest are tiny (small batch) compared to those two. Mind you we only have maybe a dozen that are rum only, the rest also make gins, vodkas and whiskey. Rum is only just kicking off out here. Especially unaged/lightly aged. We have to sell it as cane spirit due to our laws set by the English.
Great selection. I love the diversity of your picks.
Thank you, sir! I hope to get out to your neck of the woods soon and drink some rum with you!
@@therumchampion I'd love that. UnderTow just updated their menu, and a visit would give me an excuse to check it out. 😄
Those are not bad choices at all, especially if $40 is the cut off.
Thanks, Kev! Hope to see you soon
Love your content and please dont take this personally but please get a better mic
If you have any recommendations please let me know! I’m using one that plugs into my iPhone currently
What would you suggest for an aged cane juice rum? I’m pretty hooked on the unaged/white agricoles, but would like to give an aged one a go.
Any vieux from Neisson, Kō Hana, or Sampan (Vietnam)
Ok two new bottles I got
1st -Holmes Cay Guyana 2010 Port Mourant B&B Private Barrel Rum
2nd- Myrtle Bank 10 Year 120 Proof Jamaica Rum
Thoughts ?😅 anything you would compare those to? Just looking for more information from you 🎉
HC Guyana is a great cask strength rum. My tasting notes: Demerara sugar, butter scotch, pear, smoke
MB 10 Yo is a single cask from an independent bottler. The liquid is from WP. Since they’re all single casks, the taste may vary depending on when you’ve bought versus someone else. If you like Worthy Park, you’ll like this
Both are great options and great to have in your collection to enjoy.
Thank you 🙏🏻
No list is complete without Rum Fire...
Also a great option! Don’t sleep on the new WP Overproof and Monymusk Overproof

Rum Bar tastes weird and grassy to me. Like Cachaca. I was kind of disappointed, I thought itd be like Rum Fire or W&N.
