Anyway, every time a moped came up the road all the kids would jump off the swings and run to the railings and shout “moooove funky moped!!” doing the revving action with their hands. I never had a clue where they got it from until 35+ years later I come across this video! 😂
I saw him once at the Odeon in New Street, in the days when they did concerts there. I missed some of his jokes, because I was laughing so hard at the ones before them. His "Sun Reader" jokes were a masterclass in how to make a tabloid publicise its own awfulness.

I know you were meant to be 13, but nobody cared then in 1969, l had to balance one on the crossbar one on the handlebars one over my shoulder, most of em went to posh houses up a road of rich people with bloody great long drives, but l did it for 3 years before being the last year to leave at 15 to my new job at ICI, nearly every penny l made or got l spent on comics from age 3,, could read at 2yrs old, nearly every comic there was ( boys only tho lol ) Beano, Dandy, Whizzer & Chips, Batman ( detective) Batman Action, Superman Action, Green Lantern, The Flash, Justice League, Legion of Super Heroes, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Superboy, Casper the friendly ghost, Rover &, Wizard, Beezer, Topper, Century 21 that Became TV Century 21, Valiant, Hotspur, The Hulk, Spiderman, Fantastic 4, XMen, and many others I've forgotten. My head was always stuck in a flipping comic or a book as my granma and auntys would often remark. Loved em, Q Bikes, The Iron Fish, Captain Hurricane ( racist beyond belief lol the parents would have a coronary if it was printed now lol ) The Amazing Wilson, Desperate Dan ( who as l grew bigger unkind people said l resembled ,,,, tho l did like cow Or beef pies lol ) Dennis The Menace, Colonol Blink The Short Sighted Gink ( their words not mine hah ) Winker Watson, Charlie Peace, one of the best characters ever Louis Crandell The Steel Claw ( actually revived in 2005 by DC comics for a special graphic run of 6. Books Billy Bunter the fat owl of the remove., Bully Beef and Chips Biffo the Bear, so many great great characters.
You must be aware that when this song was released we had perhaps over 1 million young riders on moped The laws had changed in regard to what us teens could use so mopeds FS1E was OUR life's so the song was funny and true. The understanding of mopeds and life has changed alot since then

Some, like the legendary Yamaha FS1E, could reach 50mph (80kmh). After 1977, they were restricted to 30mph (50kmh) and no longer needed pedals.
I raced a RG500 from 88 to 93 and became 'The British M/Cycle Racing Club Champ in 1995 riding a CBR600. I still have the RG :-) I now run/own SG Motorsport

My dad bought me my 1st bike, a Puch VZ 50. 3 sets of main bearings later, I part ex'd it for a new fizzy 1973 model. Doug bought a Fizzy too. The Garelli was the best looking moped at that time. There was of course the Fantic Chopper, but I think they suffered similar problems to the Garelli's. Probably be okay if you don't thrash it.

@drpoxy Arrrrrrrrrgh the Garelli Rekord! Spent more time fixing it than riding it! Once the magneto flywheel detached whilst heading towards Basildon on the A127, came straight through the crankcase cover. Pushed it all the way to Canvey Island for a new cover and woodruff key. Have'nt learnt from that experience and ride a Ducati today!

Aaaah - The Garelli Rekord. What a bike ! Sadly I only had an FS1-E. I modified it with a skimmed head, enlarged ports and an expansion chamber and it would achieve around 50mph. Having said that I feel I should point out that this was downhill with a following wind and a favourable horoscope.
I saw Jasper & Phil Cool live, at the end They came on and jasper said they had tenminutes to fill, did we have any requests. I was in the front row and asked him to sing Funky Moped, his reply was, "Fuck off!"

it was a 1978 bike, unrestricted. ie before the 30mph law came in. 55mph was quite normal without to much modifaction.
