It was also the one millionth video to be played and the final video to be played on mtv Philippines.
@@ylop598 YES I ACTUALLY CAME HERE FROM THAT LOL

And debuted on MTV on 08/01/81
If MTV shuts down, this should be their final broadcast

@@notkimpine Well that’s a huge generalization lmao
To do that MTV would have to go back to playing music videos.
Funny how we've come full circle with podcasts. They're basically an evolved form of radio broadcasting.
Ah yeah, now that you mention it, old school radio Programme is making comeback through podcasts
I love my podcasts, especially on those long commutes.

All on what you like
I see!
“We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far.”
This resonating with anybody else?
AI
Actually, no. I'm happily doing a mental rewind, because music, (and society in general,) was better back when I was a teenager. You CAN rewind if you focus on what made/makes you happy.
No matter how far the future goes, or for how long it goes on for, we will always exist here in our moment that belongs to the past.
Especially resonating after the coming of AI
No, not me I prefer video stars
In 1983, I called my radio station and requested this song. After the song, the DJ mentioned my name, and the title, he said, "Hey wait a minute, I'm not dead yet."

The lady singing this song (Linda allan) Was such a lovely soul, I looked after her in a nursing home when she was sadly passing away, the first thing she noticed when we met was we shared the same second surname.
She told me she was the singer to this song including her son (who was a lovely man)
And she was so proud, as she should be, such a beautiful song, makes me very sad to hear tho.
She was a genuine lovely lady, would always ask how you are and had a lovely smile.

This song predicts the future. It talks about technology and computers. one of the greatest one hit wonders of all time. . I like classic rock.
i just listened to it after mixing some techno tracks. this was way ahead of its time by fusing disco, pop, synth, rock and trance type techno
The album "age of plastic" had several good selections. They were never played. Sirius/Xm on their "first-wave" station should play them.
A little trivia moment ...... did you know this was the very first song that MTV showed when they first appeared on television
Interesting

(even though the song is actually from almost two years earlier. heh.)
The “owa owa” sounds like it’s coming from a different dimension. It sounds so crispy.

GTA vice city... my memory
@@ragabashmoon1551 this not right.
They started with a countdown to a rocket launch, then the white smoke plums transit into a flag on the moon with the flag bearing the MTV logo that was flashing in the classic MTV pastel colour themes
Then the narrator says "ladies and gentlemen, let's rock and roll"
then they start playing this. It was quite funny to thing how meta it was - it was the start of mass video broadcast of music, and began the Music Video era of music - which was important as record labels knew it was an important way to advertise music. Madonna, MJ, Prince - some of the popular stars that gain masses via MTV

I remember watching this LIVE on TV on MTV back on August 1st 1981! 😃
I feel ya there
It was a wholly different time. There's not of the "essential" nicenesses we have today. Internet, mobiles, gameboy's (and the like) and pc's wasn't invented yet. The whole digital age wasn't begun. In that respect the good old days sucked. But we had a lot of time of our hands: We had no stress like we do now.
However, we lived in fear of Nuclear Armageddon. That was very real. Every Wednesday sirens in my country sounded: We prepared for the Soviets. I do NOT wish to return to that age. The fall of the Berlin Wall brought new hope. I, however, long for the 90's that were carefree. The West had won and the opportunities were endless - until 2001. Kind of like 1900-1914.
That is my perspective on the life I have lived.

Its true .. music and movies were just plain out better in past decades .. my theory is that because music and movies were so freely downloaded in the 2010's with alot of people not paying for entertainment it systematically decreased the quality ..
As a teenager right now I feel the same way
I'm tearing right now. Remembering the simple old times. GTA Vice City was AMAZING!
Video killed the radio Star remix.

Yup this Automatic and Japanese Love were some of my favorites only known to me because of Vice City

Radio killed the video star...

Can you believe its been 40 years, today, that this was the first video MTV ever played? 40 years?! Man... I didn't even think I'd still be alive this long lol
You are a Radio Star ⭐

well one guy got free from jail some days ago, he spent 68 years in jail so 40 years isnt that much if you think that way
Time flies and the world changes.
Soon every kid born in the 90s will be 30 or older
@@roddydykes7053 I saw a tiktok yesterday where a guy said kids at the school were having a school spirit days cosplay where they were dressing up as kids from the early 90s. Then he showed some video of them. They so did not look like they were in COSTUME. lol like, they just looked .... normal! I'm hoping someone duets it with how kids are dressing now so I can see a side by side comparison. The 80s, yeah, I can see that being costumish but...the 90s??? lol I could not wrap my head around it.
Everyone talking about the deep fakes, but did you know the piano player is Hans Zimmer?
Edit: to clarify, I'm referring to the dark haired one at 2:50
Woah, really?
Holy shit, it IS him.
No Way!
The blonde guy is Geoff Downes from Asia fame
@@kalani1987 Yes! And the dark haired guy at the end is Hans Zimmer.

@@ABHyt Just search "video killed the radio star" and it should be like the 3rd vid
This song is so brilliant we all haven't recognised it in the 80s. Over 40 years and it is still up to date.
What an absolute tune! The outro bassline in particular is fantastic.
42 years and counting. Great songs never fade away.

1980 was a great year and this song got the decade off to a good start.
43 years old! It came out during the summer of 79. It just wasn’t an instant success. Technically a 70s song 😜
I have this on vinyl and on 45 RPM
@@AYoungMusicianDude Exactly. You hit on the head. Good point.
Technically, the girl in this video would currently be 50 years old. Awesome.
Look it up on Wikipedia: Virginia Hey.
@@andrewthomas3930 Yes, you're right!
Virginia Hey was born in 1952. She would have been near 30 when this video came out.
Not the small dark haired girl, but one of the singers.
Just looked her up. Her IMDB says she was born in 1952 but does confirm that she was the girl in the video.???
@@dennishuffstutler9820 even if it doesn't this song came out 42 years ago, the girl looks about 8, her being 50 seems reasonable
No matter how hard they wanted the set to look modern it still looks 1980s❤
This marked the end of the 70s decade and the beginning of the fabulous 80s music decade and MTV with this gem of a song.
The kind of song you can't hear just once...
I heard this song, and watched the video , on August 1st, 1981. I was 15. I still revel with it. It's a timeless song.
I watched this 5 times the first time I searched it up
@@michaeljaneway9459 me 2
@@mynameisfriday118 I'm 46 and I remember seeing it when it came out 👍
Watched it as an 80s kid nonstop while I played my Atari 2600.
