Is the MU-MIMO feature many router manufacturers mention really just snake oil?

Damian Ketcham they’ve been lying 🤥
@@damianketcham ua-cam.com/video/fPslvBVqJp8/v-deo.html
My router lies to me all the time, it tells me my internet is working then it buffers my 144p UA-cam videos.
Your internet is working but it's working at shower than advertised speeds.
that is just UA-cam being stupid
Same here. In my case even the speed test shows that I have a 100 Mbps connection but for some reason UA-cam still does not play well at 1080p resolution. I sometimes wonder could it be my old laptop that's not able to handle the video.
oh my god, as I went to expand the comment to "see more" it buffered and loaded nothing... I get download speeds around 15MB/s and shit like this happens
I can watch Netflix in 4K but sometimes it takes so long for anything to load on Amazon app 😆

Yes but we made it smarter and added lightning

No they have RGB
Ahh yes, the old joke the cpu is a rock we tricked into doing math after we put lightning into it. So original, totally not stolen joke lol

when are we getting a router roundup from linus media? under explored area i feel
They've done some router videos in the past but they weren't about the routers as much as the internet tech they had. I agree with this entirely
Brice Sweazy Right! I totally understand but it’d be cool for their new channel short circuit .its a lil more niche but I can imagine it being super helpful.they might be able to go the ltt channel route since they have a sort of “roundup” mini series thing going down (but I think that’s focused on budget oriented items only)
Mikrotik ftw
Well, most of inexpensive consumer routers suck, because they don't have enough capacity for all bandwidth they advertise. They use cheap arch based around software-based LLC with slow CPUs because power limit in those devices won't allow for anything hotter.
Although, they usually do support at least full wireless bandwidth across link layer and Ethernet MAC usually includes switch circuitry, so everything across single device works at full bandwidth. For example, gigabit router may have 1Gbps across LAN ports (switch mode), but only ~300-400Mbps between LAN->WAN ports (traffic going through link layer). If you need more, consider custom (PC-based) or industrial solutions instead of highly priced home kit.
@@Weaknespase Or your router has to sit the exact opposite end of the house were WiFi practically doesnt reach you, Powerline gets too much interference for full bandwidth and your landlord forbits you from utilizing a 20 m lan cable, so youre stuck with 60 mbit/s out of 100 via powerline.
0:52 "basically just rocks" LOL. I love that.

It makes him look less like a lesbian 😂😂
When I saw the title I thought it would be about routers saying they're capable of 450mbps or even 867mbps, but their WAN and LAN ports are 100mbps
Well that ain't true, most new and even older basic home routers have gigabitt ethernet ports on board
@@gideonruben187 but now they say they support 3gigs, LOL
Or how they advertise BLAZING AC4000, but it's actually 750 + 1625 + 1625, no way to get 4000Mbps on a single connection.
@@gideonruben187 There are some routers just a little cheaper than the gigabit ones that advertise "big" numbers for the wireless connection but they aren't capable of receiving more than 100mbps
Actually the complete opposite is true, they may advertise gigabit internet but that's only for the LAN ports, and not the Wi-Fi.
Thanks a lot for this. I was planning to buy a MU-MIMO router after hearing about the technology(even though my current router is pretty darn good but lacks MU-MIMO). You just saved me a bunch of money.
You mean it saved you a... KAKAROTT of money! :D

"Multi-input multi-output or MIMO"
That's what I'm going to be calling sex from now on.
I feel bad for the ones doing the outputting
too much output TOO MUCH OUTPUT
The advantage is that they are SENT at the same time, no where in MU-MIMO does it state that they will arrive at the same time.
MIMO does work if both the router AND the client device have built-in multiple antennas. All it does is use special math to encode data and send 'diverse' streams of signals through multiple antennas while the receiving end decode it by using the same math in order to compute the delay between the 'echoes' sent by those antennas to reconstruct the original signal. It is an efficient technique to cram more bandwidth in a crowded 2.4ghz and even 5 ghz space so you do not need to use additional channels (i.e. 40mhz width for 2.4ghz) that could irate your neighbors due to interference.
Ubiquiti APs aren't lying, we sold them with the line "You'll give the whole street wifi" because it was true AF. Those things are amazing and affordable for what they do.
Shame their firmware is all over the place. Whenever they release a new product it takes them years to fix it. Been talking to a few people recently who recommend Zyxel instead as their build quality is far better and similar pricing.
No denying that both are far better than consumer equipment though.
Their AP's are fantastic; but their wired router can't handle a power cut without firmware corruption...
I'll second that, fantastic devices. Just stay away from the bleeding edge Ubiquiti stuff.
Damn I love this guy! He's truly something special. Linus is ok, I mean he's probably pretty great behind the camera, but this dude along with his epic mustacchio was truly born to be in FRONT of the camera! Keep it up guy who's name I never remember :D
I've found that most router tech makes your internet less reliable, so I usually turn off EVERYTHING and make it as basic as possible. Tends to be much more reliable! I also set the router to reboot every other day at 2am to keep it fresh. Used to have it ping Google every 3 seconds and reboot if the ping failed, but that managed to brick a router after a several hour long internet outage...
4:18 “Make your brain good with Brilliant.”
Best Brilliant advertisement I’ve ever seen. 😂
You ever see a video in your recommended and think, "Oh, I want to watch that later" but you don't add it to watch later, and then you forget what it was and have to retrace your steps through UA-cam to hopefully get that recommended again, because you'll know it when you see it? Yeah, that was this video. Thanks to Julien Solomita's creme brulee video for bringing me here...
Ah yes, that sounds delicious!! I will give it a search right away! 🤢
“Make your brain good.” Hahaha 🤣
That's why I love netwotking. You spend more time deciphering a zoo of acronyms than actually understanding netwotking...

Did Riley accidentally flick us off at 2:23 in the left upper corner of the screen? Looks like they deleted his hand with a white circle for a moment there
The glasses are gone so the only thing that takes our attention is that stash. Magnificent.
I closed the video when the advertisement came on, but came back specifically to like the video since I lot of time and effort went into making it. Keep up the great work
Doesn't affect WIFI 6 though,as its got OFDMA.
...as an *optional* feature...
Was just going to ask what the difference was with Wi-Fi 6
@@mapz00 it should be faster, and the feature of OFDMA, but as @ekwmhroucg said, its a optional feature. So what is the difference mainly? well it should be a little bit faster, experience wise, it still sucks. If only is OFDMA feature is mandatory, it will be a huge change as it will be able to prioritize traffic and able to communicate on all devices at the same time (just like MU-MIMO but using the existing technique that is used in Cellular Network).
@@EmilePolka Doesnt all WIFI 6 routers come with OFDMA? That's the only thing seperating WIFI 5 from WIFI 6
C Nion according to wifi alliance who were doing this standards on wifi, its a optional feature. meaning not everyone is required to put that feature. so yeah given that most manufacturers really like to save manufacturing cost its highly likely they dont put ofdma on wifi6 device they created.
What about OFDMA?
Those hardware snake oils are NOTHING if compared to the stuff they sell to audiophiles, like 500 dollar wooden knobs and literal magic rocks.
There's this obscurum rock that somehow improves your audio by just placing it on top of the audio gear that costs 2000 dollars.
MU-MIMO is great in theory.
The implementation in AC wave 2 routers is bad but you shouldn't dismiss it entirely.
It could become much better with real AX devices. Wifi 6 is promising but it's still in draft phase.
A new Techquickie, LTT, short circuit, and TechLinked video all in the same day... love you g rut uys!!!
"an aesthetic that makes your living room look like an evil layer" -- while showing the exact router in my living room
If you add a router that looks like that to your living room, your living room now looks like an evil lair. This is accurate.
One important setting is QoS to prioritize realtime applications like games over something like UA-cam
this is why i use mikrotik router for that specific task and setting up custom url hotspot.
use comfast for cheap but reliable in and out door AP.
"Make your brain... good -- with Brilliant." -Riley
Best ad spot I've heard in a while. Thank you, Riley.
The case for the second computer I built didn't have quite enough air-flow. And, when I added a third hard-drive, this became a problem; I had to pull the side cover off every time I wanted to game. Now, a heat sink wouldn't have helped because the issue was lack of air-flow, you could press you hand to the side panel and actually worry that you might burn yourself if it got any hotter. I did get some cheap, hard-drive fans that did the trick. The only issue, they were cheap, so the wires weren't well soldered on very well. I had to thread them into the plugins, and use the connectors they were soldered to as clamps to hold them in place.
LTT should do a top router comparison video. It’s a subject that’s really neglected.
Like best WiFi 5, WiFi 6, best 10Gb, best multi-gig, etc at a few different price points maybe?
Just got a Pulsway Ad on this video with Linus in it
Mu-Mimo does help i had only 2x2 and it was slow I went to 3x3 and my speeds increased. It's not totally snake oil, I have 40 devices connected to my network
I just commented this under your Android on Switch video: "My boss just gave me his >10 year old (almost never used) Nintendo DS lite last friday. Such a nostalgic feeling to play Dr. Kawashima's "More brain training" natively without my phone. Sadly, he didn't have my favorite games: Mario Kart and Mario Party. And those two games don't run well with emulation on my phone... Maybe I should ask my small brother (who had my old NDS lite) if he still has it with my games or even a "super card" (that's what we call the R4 DS card)."
Now I see the animation with the black NDS lite at 1:05... Just think about that for a minute 😂. Are you stalking me??? Even more funny, I thought about also writing about the (unfortunately now dead) Nintendo Wi-Fi-Connection. And then I see the WiFi "beams" in the animation. That almost makes me cry 😥
4:10 If you, if you have friends...

Yes, my router is lying to me we never truested each others.
Is the MU-MIMO Technology now better with either ac or ax wifi standards? I suggest that there should be another tech quickie for this. :)
I used to think expensive HDMI cables were a scam, then when I had to pass 4k 120fps signal with ~20 ft cable... I realized there really is a place were expensive HDMI cables are needed.
I enabled MU-MIMO because of one of your videos and now you're telling me it was all a lie?! I wanna cry T^T

Ok, i know this is unrelated, but hear me out:
I just bought the new Google wifi about a month ago, and it was working fine for about 2 weeks. Then, devices just started randomly losing internet connectivity, several times per day. It is making my smart home devices (and my phone) barely work. I've already checked my cable router (it is working fine) and I've tested the ethernet cable (it is also working fine.) I can't find anything online. What should i do?
Spatial multiplexing is what the Borg were doing in Star Trek First Contact right?

We have 4 antenas on our router, but they're for 4 wifis:Host and guest 2.4GHz and 5GHz, guest wifi doesnt allow users connected to access router settings (even if I'm logged into the app to use remote router access)
Nice video, but, please clarify... What is this 'friend' technology, and what is it used for ?
And here I was getting all excited :( for 8 x 8 MU-MIMO
@Torfaro Qualcomm have a cool demo of it, Basically an AP with 8 antennas can speak to 8 clients
That's WiFi 6 (AX)
I remember that Spectrum increased my speed to 200mb/s for "free" (Bill went from $64 to $74) and claimed that my modem/router was outdated and that I need to upgrade to a "new"one that can handle the speed increase but I would have to pay $10 more a month to rent it so I just bought my own modem and router that's more recent (2015~, the modem/router that they wanted to sell me was from 2010) and my bill went down by $5.
Good stuff. I like this guy. Good presenting.
