Using a neighbor's wireless access point without his knowledge and permission is a bad idea, even if it isn't illegal in your locality. It may not be legal even with their permission. The answer varies depending on the policies of residential internet service providers and plans. If the service provider allows it and the neighbor agrees, using the neighbor's Wi-Fi connection is legal.

Ever since I added a fan to my home networking gear, I have not needed to reset my router in over three years. The products are designed to die, they have no cooling, the heat sinks they do have aren't even applied to all the right components. So it's worth noting that I had added some that were meant for Raspberry Pi devices. My old TP-Link Archer D7 still works like it did right out of the box. I think it would be cool (no pun intended) to see you guys mod a home router or two and test them compared to one without added cooling.

Have to tell a funny story:
My grandmother lives in the middle of basically no where. She has internet that comes through the phone line that maxes out at 0.3 mbps download around 3am. Verizon coverage is spotty, and she had a router that supported 54mbps maximum. She would not listen to me and bought a $200 WiFi router that has 3 antennas as opposed to two. She thought that this would greatly improve her connection speed. Surprise! It didn’t But she wouldn’t listen when I said that it would be best to no waste her money.
Moral of the story: Your grandchildren probably know more about technology than you do.

I usually get a new router after five years of age. Not only is the hardware refresh good for the reasons Linus mentioned , unless you're running 3rd party firmware, you'll stop getting patches and security updates. Depending on your situation you may want to do it more often than that too. Even Ethernet connections can benefit from newer router hardware too. That processing bottleneck will slow those down as well.

Linux is completely different than Windows. If a developer wanted to make a program compatible with Linux they would need to put in a significant amount of work to do so. That being said, many windows applications can be run on Linux with the Wine utility, it just takes a bit more work to get things running

What you should know though, especially if you are an IT-tech or computer specialist at your workplace, most of the the devices I have tested do not support older security protocols. This means if you are called to a place where some of the machines used in the factory are from -90's or even 2000, they can't be connected to the network anymore. This also came up when the networks moved from 10Mbit to 100Mbit+ connections, as some of the software only understood 10Mbit connection speeds. I've actually have had to buy a HUB from flea market after upgrading the net framework to CAT6 to cut the speed down to 10Mbit at one place, so the accounting software could access the servers again..

My general rules: If it doesn't support 5 GHz, replace it. If you can't get at least your full internet speed through it, replace it.
Beyond that though, you shouldn't be doing all that much over wireless that really exceeds your internet connection. Large file transfers go on wires. That's what they're there for. Performance will always be better and you don't have to share it.

Right now my internet is 20 megabytes per second download and 4 megabytes per second upload. I'm able to download and play online games I've been wanting to stream myself playing video games I don't know what internet I should use I only have two choices HughesNet or Radio based internet cables out of the question cuz they don't bring the cable lines down my road.

Mbps and MBps is not the same thing
steam will show you MB/s (MBps) megabyte per second
and other will show Mb/s (Mbps) megabit per second
      so remember 8bit = 1byte
if you have 200mbps via task manager you will have 25MB/s on steam if not bottleneck

If I were you, I would get rid of the Xfinity router modem thing. You'll save about $14/month on rental charges. You'll then need to buy a compatible modem and router. Pretty much any decent 3rd party router will be much better than the crap that Comcast rents.

My father manages the family wifi and has no clue what he does:
    - Using Repeater with AP-functionality over WiFi
    - Changing maximum transferspeed to 100 MBit/s
    - Changing each WiFi protocol to it's own name and disabling multiconnection support (WiFi1[2G], WiFi1[5G], WiFi2[2G] & WiFi2[5G])
    - decreasing WiFi range from 100% to 30%
    - disabling WiFi on Router between 0am and 5am (for energy saving)
the list would go on and on and on, but I have to go transfer files for 4 hours ;-)

Hi Linus, I am using an Asus GT-AC5300 Router and a USB Asus -AC68 USB AC1900 Wireless Adapter. Before going into that, My ISP WhizComms can only sustain speeds of 438Mbps download and 949Mbps upload. I am using a Direct Cat7 Cable connected directly to the Optical modem for my 1Gbps Account. When i tried the same configuration on another 1Gbps ISP (Singtel), my speed was 977Mbps and 949Mbps Upload. I am Perplexed by this great difference in results even through both tests, besides, my Laptop is an Intel i7 2.4Ghz processor with 4GB ram, with a 256 SSD. Even My device driver for the built-in lan card was set as Connect as 1Gbps all the time. My ISP told me it was my laptop's fault. If the fault lies in my laptop, why do I get High Speeds on another ISP Network?

I actually upgraded a few weeks ago. This place I'm renting only came with a old 2.4 ghz wireless router, and with about 15 signals in the area, it was shit, I only had 1 neighbor on 5 ghz, so it was a very nice upgrade.

    • @oldtwins

I can get about 30 2.4 signals in my crowded area. The band is useless for anything other than low speed transmission devices. Forget about even watching a 480p youtube video without spinning. 5GHz is mandatory for me.

They do that kind of stuff with charging devices, too. You'll see "30 W output" and think all is well. Turns out they just added all the ports' output together. So what you really have is 5V~2A x 3. That's 3 10 W outs which is nowhere close to what it sounds like they're trying to sell you.

    measurement units:
RAM 1KB = 1024*8 bits (also used by software)
    HDD 1KB = 1000*8 bits
    network 1KB = 1000 bits
for a industry literally held together by standards there seems to be a lot of room for interpretation.

Guys got a question for y'all. We have a modemrouter which should atleast be capable of delivering 54 mb/s 2.4 Ghz however our download speed is 400 kb/s at cable ! The thing is 5 years old and was constantly used by at least 5 devices ever since. Now my parents are blaming it on the fact we live on the countryside (c'mon 7 kilometer of the centre of a city), but I suggest buying a new router, what do you all think?

Jeez. My "village" has 60k people, I am on an island in the north Atlantic, near the arctic circle. And EVERYONE on that Island has access to a 50 Mbit (6400kb/s) connection, at the minimum. And if you happen to not be at home, you will have at least 3G on all main roads. The argument that "it is expensive to connect small towns" is utter bullshit. beta.speedtest.net/result/6796527086

The cable itself is half as thick as a garden hose, I don't see the problem. Nor is that stuff super expensive. The only thing that needs to be done, is to plow a small trench, drop it in and put dirt over it. Every household will need a little box that converts the optic signal into a digital one, that's the only catch. The box is about as big as a router would be.
