- In 2022, total bilateral trade between Russia and China hit a record high of $190 billion, up 30% from 2021. 2023 is set to eclipse that figure, with total trade hitting $134 billion in the first seven months.
That is prompting concern from Western officials, who say the economic boost - and the trade of specific goods - is giving Moscow a helping hand in its war in Ukraine.
Beijing has so far resisted condemning the full-scale invasion, while insisting that its trade with Moscow constitutes “normal economic cooperation” that targets no “third party.”
Mark Cancian, a former U.S. Marine Corps colonel and a senior advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said: “There’s no question that the Chinese authorities are aware of the trade flows. They’re large enough that they could not continue without the acquiescence of the Chinese government.”
An analysis of Russian customs documents filed as recently as August 2023 points to the continued supply of drones, helmets, vests and radios from China, providing a lifeline for President Vladimir Putin’s over 18-month war of attrition, and a lucrative avenue for Chinese companies.
The companies involved in the trade tend to be small exporters, Antonia Hmaidi from the Mercator Institute for China Studies told CNBC.
Joseph Webster, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, added: “Exporters in China who export to Russia are not going to receive penalties for doing so, so long as they don’t explicitly violate Western sanctions and don’t provoke additional tensions with the West.
“So long as they can keep these exports quiet, they seem to be at little risk of provoking the ire of the Communist Party.”

How do you feel about the almost trillion dollars China's will have given to Russia by the end of the year. China's banks are now underwriting Russian mortgages and unsecured loans and chinese insurance companies using state funds are paying to insure oil shipments from Russia which Iran are hijacking. China's giving money by the tens of billions with no strings attached to Africa, the Taliban, Syria. Would that money not be better spent in China? Another Chinese here. Thanks for your interesting point. I may add another point of view. I know some stats of how many Ukrainian scientists (with their family members) used to live in China and help develop almost all aspects of China's defense industry: there were above twenty thousand at its height. I know how much debt China owes to Ukraine. It is then understandable that why China will never send lethal weapons to Russia, even under tremendous pressure.
I think the Ukraine people also largely appreciate that, and there is a reason why the Ukrainian government has not yet criticized China for its trade relation with Russia, or even has not said a single bad word about Xi Jinping. There is still a very strong support to Ukrainian on China's social media, e.g., you can search for quite a lot of videos showing fierce debate or even duels between pro Ukraine & pro Russia people.

What does the West want countries that are sanctioned by the USA to do? Stagnate or wait for their economies to collapse just because the US wants it? They found alternate trading partners ( most that are also sanctioned by the USA) to keep their economies growing. Even microchips actually. Those mature 28nm and above which are widely used in military stuff. Not really due to US companies moving manufacturing to China but more to do with Hong Kong, Taiwan during the 80s and Korea, Japan from the 1990s in addition to China's own propensity for all things electronics. By the time European companies and after that US companies came the ecosystem in China was already fairly/relatively developed. One of the reasons they actually came.
You know when Ford and GM had to shut down production in 2021 because of chip shortage? That was caused by just 2 weeks of lockdown at one of 3 Chinese ports. Russia gets their chips from the same place America gets their chips, the place dies are sent for packaging, the place that has the most mature node capacity in the world.
And America also never shifted anything overseas, America never made modern chips in 1980s, nor LCDs, nor drones, America never had the capacity to make anything we use today, all America did was stopped building and watch the world left them behind.
China have a stronghold on mature node chip.
