Since we don't know when this was recorded or what re-writes happened shortly before recording, to infer anything from seeing them reading scores seems a bit unfair. If Kristina Anderson-Lopez is anything like Lin-Manuel Miranda, they may have been given rewrites when they got to the studio that day!

It's a studio recording, dude, they use the scores, because they are allowed to. If there is a chance of something going wrong in live performance (cause it's live, duh), and it's fine, there can be no such thing in a studio version. Almost every score that you can listen officially, have been recorded in pretty much this way.
Also, indeed, it was shot at least 2 months before the official opening of the musical, they might have received the scores like 24 hours before that)

Except that this show ran Off-Broadway in 2010 and was in development at the O'Neill Music Theater Conference in 2008. Furthermore, it was borne out of the writers having lived through 9/11..in 2001. So, no, the idea was not "lifted" from another show.
