I was lucky enough to watch this when it was originally broadcast at the 2000 MTV Movie Awards. The audience reaction was priceless. I can't believe that was 24 years ago. It doesn't feel that long ago....
I was trying to think where I had seen this before and... oh! holy moly! Way back then when I had a set-top box and a TV license! I did actually watch it! Before I got married and had kids! Back when I could do whatever I wanted whenever I wanted! Those were the days.
Literally one of the best USA comedies ever, it was a pure satire and had some seriously very accurate criticism of Hollywood in there. Brilliant film, and Tom Cruise's character was basically his idea all along 😮
I don’t think so. I believe it was scripted based on the forced laughter and the aping of each others actions afterwards. Also, Ben actually finishing Tom’s sentence seems to be the natural comedic reply to Tom’s “I don’t think we ever…” line. Think about it, if Tom had finished that line to end the skit, it would have ended the skit on an unfunny note.
@@jmadratzI see both of your points and sucks that we’ll never know but that’s a testament to Cruise’s acting if it’s scripted and faux-surprise, then the seemingly for a second genuine laughter. I’m leaning ever so slightly towards unscripted as there’s that moment where he can’t keep a straight face and bursts out laughing. Also the possibility it was scripted but they were both making each other die laughing with new nuances each take.
it was. I remember when this 1st aired on MTV and then they did a behind the scenes of the spoof and Tom legit broke because he wasn't expecting that line from Ben
That laugh that Tom genuinely had makes Ben smile deep. This is the gold people. Tom just loving the craft and working hard to make a fool of himself knowing damn this guy is awesome for films.
I'm sure he does in real life - don't think he would have been up for this if he didn't....love how Tom is always game for a laugh, and they work really well together 😄❤️
This was hilarious Stunt double punch punch punch John Woo harder lol The motorcycles flying in the air t"this mission got impossibleler lol.The risky business scene hitting the wall lol😁😂😂😎🤕Also the cocktail scene🤣🤣
This was in 2000. That's 17 years after "Risky Business". Amazing how Tom Cruise aged through the 80s and 90s. He just became a different kind of gorgeous.
i had the amazing dvd playing on my original xbox, thinking i had the coolest console with the coolest dvd, watched this so many times it was great along with the metallica video. Childhood man
What’s actually really great about this sketch is on a deeper level we realise at the end that Tom does want him around. Everyone else warns him that the guys a nut but we realise that there’s something a bit off with Tom because he gets genuine enjoyment out of him being around. It’s like a co-dependent relationship where Tom looks at Stiller and is like “wow, I have to try really hard not to become that guy”.

Those punches to Stiller's face and the look on his face while it's happening was just perfection👊 The dual laugh at the end, fundamentally explained their enduring professional relationship... eurggh!
The laugh is so spot on … Ben Stiller is brilliant 😂
How much do you earn to be a hype man? Just curious.
Ik that was great. 😂

His was the worst installment and yet he’s vindicated by “harder”.
“go away” 😂
That pleased smile before saying it.
And then Ben Stiller directed Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder
Tom's hip hop dancing and over the top acting in that film was wonderful.
