@@FromRussia_With_Love well dude-like everything, it’s subjective and as someone who has worked in libraries for years, has a cinema degree, minor in psychology I’d say the culmination of her personality traits makes her seem like a nerd. And a lot of girls/women are nerdy. ✌🏾
In other words, to be accepted as a true nerd, you have to walk the walk as well as talk the talk. But there’s no doubt she has earned at least partial nerd cred. One doesn’t necessarily need to completely lack social aptitude or look a certain way to be a ‘nerd’.
@@someone_something_yeah7552 nerd, to many likely means someone smart but also in specific studies. Someone who can go on and on over a certain topic. But-it’s all subjective. Nerd by definition (yup, just looked it up) is a person seen as overly intellectual, obsessive, introverted or lacking social skills. I mean Peter Parker is considered a science nerd, Supergirl, Lena and Lex Luthor (some comic book types) and then many could say Stephen Colbert is a nerd (based on his love of Lord of the Rings, amongst other reasons), Lady Gaga who went to Julliard, Margot Robbie who has discussed her love of Harry Potter books in interviews. Again-and redundantly-being a nerd is partially based on what’s trendy, but it’s certainly branched away from Urkel and Velma like characters. ✌🏾
@@someone_something_yeah7552 I would think that the minimum requirement for "walking the walk" here would include recognizing your supposed "nerd idol" who most non-nerds would recognize pretty easily. This is like if I told you that I'm a huge fan of the Edmonton Oilers, but then you showed me a picture of Wayne Gretzky and I was like "who tf is that." Most non-Oilers fans and even people who don't watch hockey would recognize the guy. Gillian is a crossword puzzle nerd but she doesn't recognize Will Shortz? I've never done a crossword puzzle in my life and I can recognize his face.
Joel McHale is a perfect example of how you can spread misinformation. He had full confidence it was #3 and got the crowd to believe it just because it feels right.
Yeah but this isn’t really about information anyway, or ever was to begin with. It’s much more about bias’s and opinions of one dude, going with his feelings. Not a damn thing to do with information or the awareness of it to people who NEED to know these things. It’s a game show for fucks sake. For FUN
Anyone who pays attention to people knew it was no2 by the smile and sheer joy on his face when she said she listened to him every sunday morning and was excited as she talked. She was adorable and he was moved and he couldn't hide it
2:20, No.3 gave it away when he said he sold his first puzzle at age 14. During the intro, it was said that this person sold their first puzzle at age 16. 0:25
I felt the same way as Gillian as soon as I heard his voice. Grew up listening to him on the radio. Loved how she just barely contained herself listening to the other guys choosing the wrong person and then couldn't wait for her answer to be given.
The issue is more about you accusing her of faking this or playing it up. Just because she’s an actress doesn’t mean she’s faking or acting EVERYTHING about this appearance. Your suggestion of this says more about YOU than it does about her. It’s one thing to personally dislike ‘quirky and nerdy’; it’s another thing to accuse her of playacting.
If you rewatch it and see Will Shortz' facial expression at 1:37, after hearing how big a fan Gillian is...he's obviously beaming inside, but trying no to show it. So cute. Also: he's introduced at the very beginning as having sold his first puzzle at age 16 yet the faker claims he sold his first puzzle at age 14, but nobody seemed to have noticed this.
It's easy to spot when you have the luxury of watching it back and rewatching. They had to decide on spot and the infodump at the beginning probably didn't stick as it's too much to remember.
I noticed Gillian’s reaction to number 3’s answer to the longest cross word puzzle question and knew from there lol, then it made me think how she freaked out after her question to number 2’s voice because she was instantly like “I know who it is”
That look on his face and the one Gillian gave when number 3 answered Joel's question were both dead giveaways of who it was. Man, everyone comes off looking like good people from this clip.
The moment he smiled and quickly schooled his expression when she said she loved crosswords was so telling. I'm not sure he's encountered a celebrity fan before. The way she was gushing was fracking adorable. She all but ran across the stage to go hug the man the moment she could 😅
The answer was obvious. One of them looks and answers like a normal human being while the other tried so hard to look "nerdy". Also Gillian is so wholesome on this, I love her enthusiasm!
The “7 letter word for underpaid” joke kinda flew under the radar but was savage. Apparently a crossword puzzle editor’s average salary is 72k? So they make more than teachers?

As a general NPR fangirl, I can relate to this feeling of gushing over someone because of some radio show that no one (in my vicinity) has ever heard of. Went to a Chris Thile concert 2 nights ago and was talking about Live From Here and what a good show it was (it no longer exists 😢) and the guy next to me smiled and nodded and had no idea what I was blathering on about.
3:09 I think Shannon lowkey just watched at Gillian's hand to see what she wrote 😂 He listed multiple reasons why he would vote for no. 3, but ended up writing 2 "for no good reason" = because he saw Gillian do it.
I knew this straight away, and I knew his name was Will Shortz. He was on an episode of How I Met Your Mother as himself, when they all go to a party in a hotel.
The guy who played "Kane" from Command & Conquer was blown away when Robin Williams came up to him and absolutely gushed like a fangirl. I imagine it looked a lot like Gillian and Will. I love videos like this because everyone, no matter how successful or talented you are, has a hero they gush over.
First time I gave Will Shortz a look, it got me wondering from where I recognized him, and very quickly I remembered his appearance in an episode of How I Met Your Mother. It was a small bit for the show, but unforgettable nonetheless. So happy I still remember that. Season 5 - Episode 22 for those wondering.

Which says something about many different people’s individual judgments. They may or may not be wrong, but I haven’t seen anything in the way of actual evidence to the contrary , just negative opinions.
I will take him to task for using clickbait-y absolutes like “always”, and “best” in his opinions. That was guaranteed to attract you to comment, and it also attracted me. I personally don’t mind people’s opinions so long as they don’t use absolutes, but it’s a free country and they’re gonna do that. If the commenter was trolling for a response, he now has one from each of us!
Number 2's voice gave it away. But also the word number 3 stated, can't fit in the crossword puzzle. Not in normal publishing. Too long. So therefore, it wasn't used.
It might have been joke puzzle. But there was also inconsistency in the year he solved his first puzzle. They all propably didn't want to ruin the show, but they knew. From other interviews atleast Joel seems bright enough that he would realize 14 isn't 16 and extra long archaic words arent used often in puzzles because nobody would be able to solve them.

Gillian is adorable. “Being a nerd finally paid off!” She Screamed It.
Gillian Jacobs is not a "nerd." She's just trying to cultivate a "I'm quirky and nerdy and a bookworm not like other girls" image.
The fact that she got so excited just makes me love her all the more.

2:20, No.3 gave it away when he said he sold his first puzzle at age 14. During the intro, it was said that this person sold their first puzzle at age 16. 0:25
Yeah, I caught that too, but that was after i watched the episode and picked 3. I would have picked 2 if I caught that when I first watched it.
Fun fact though, he _did_ sell his first at 14 (he says so himself in the documentary), so the intro is wrong for whatever reason.
@@PLF... I bet the teacher watched the documentary too, it all makes sense now. Nerds unite

I felt the same way as Gillian as soon as I heard his voice. Grew up listening to him on the radio. Loved how she just barely contained herself listening to the other guys choosing the wrong person and then couldn't wait for her answer to be given.

Also: he's introduced at the very beginning as having sold his first puzzle at age 16 yet the faker claims he sold his first puzzle at age 14, but nobody seemed to have noticed this.
Yeah that one flew under the radar even for me, only noticed it the second rewatch
Thought the same thing re the age mistake! Noticed it right away.
Man, everyone comes off looking like good people from this clip.
i love when celebs are actual nerds and not just frontin', makes my nerdery feel good :)

I mean the nerdier looking one is a teacher so him looking like that isn’t surprising

Gillian Jacobs is what I imagine happens when you take all of the joy in the world and condense it into a single person
The “7 letter word for underpaid” joke kinda flew under the radar but was savage. Apparently a crossword puzzle editor’s average salary is 72k? So they make more than teachers?
well to be fair, the saturday crossword is, for a huge percentage of NYT subscribers, the primary/only reason they subscribe in the first place. Plus I imagine Will gets a little more than 72k, AND that would probably be for ONLY the NYT crossword. The dude is all over the place making puzzles and games.

I thought it was # 2 because when Gilian started fangirling he seemed really happy.
As a general NPR fangirl, I can relate to this feeling of gushing over someone because of some radio show that no one (in my vicinity) has ever heard of.
