We Found the "New Material" in Apple's Fourth Butterfly Keyboard

  • Has Apple finally fixed the MacBook Pro’s troubled keyboard? To find out, we pulled one apart and took it to our local materials engineering lab for some analysis. We found a new blend of plastic protecting the key switches, and the springy metal domes in the switches have also been subtly tweaked in a way that supposedly helps thosse peskkyy doubble inputts and missd ky prsses.
If that’s not enough to reassure you, in an unprecedented move this year’s keyboards were also immediately added to Apple’s newly expanded keyboard repair program. Analyzing Apple’s prototyping in process has been pretty fun, but we’re still typing on 2012 MacBook Pro keyboards and not experiencing these pricey beta tests first-hand...
Fixed your broken MacBook Pro keyboard with our Pro Tech Toolkit: www.ifixit.com...
LOL JK you can't fix it.

Companies don’t change things as frequently as they use to. Dell, Acer, Toshiba, Razer, and so many other companies are guilty of this, not just Apple. That’s the markets fault as a whole though, people want innovation now so companies are honesty spend too much time trying to make the next big think rather than putting true improvements into tech they have out now.

Apple has always had issue. The earlier MacBook pros had the Nvidia GPUs that failed. Apple eventually threw in the towel and went to AMD GPUs. And added a warranty extension for the systems with the failing GPUs. But that program was sunsetted leaving Nvidia GPU systems with no repair path.

As the creator of the dome switch in 1969, I would be looking at the electronics, if there is no failure in the dome or moisture layer.
The original 'switch' was contactless. The depression of a key was detected by the change in the capacitance between a metal layer attached to the key and the PCB traces below. The dome was originally invented to provide a 'snap' action to accentuate the change in capacitance of the switch with the depression of a key. It was about 3 years later that the 'switch' was made into a contacting switch for use in calculators. As they say ‘the rest is history’.
US patent # 3,653,038. I'd be happy to consult on your problem.

  • @Gauntlet08
    @Gauntlet08 5 років тому

Considering the fact that cleaning under the keys doesn't always fix the issues, it looks like those dome switches are probably the point of failure. Most chiclet-style keyboards have rubber or plastic dome switches under the keycaps because they typically last longer than metal in this use case. Simply put, metal breaks faster when it's bent repeatedly.

This is extremely interesting, but also extremely incomplete:
    - The key cap: so is it the same material and shape? You just listed this piece but gave no detail about it.
    - The butterfly mechanism: the most important piece. Again, you listed this piece, but gave us no information about it. Has the material of the butterfly mechanism changed? Is it a different plastic? Has the shape changed in any way?
    - The dome switch cover: here you were more exhaustive. We got that it's a different material and also it's thicker.
    - The metal dome switch: so it's the same exact shape apparently. But is it made with the same metal?

It looks to me the shape of the metal dome spring has changed. The 2018 model has a faster transition from the edge to the flat part of the dome, vs the 2019 switch which has a rounder transition. The difference is slight, but if you look at the inner "circle" of the 2019 switch it is smaller than the 2018 version. The 2019 switch/spring just looks rounder or smoother making it more "bubble" like. A rounder design would distribution the stress more evenly on the dome portion of the switch. I would like to see a cross-section comparison of the 2018 and 2019 versions.
Perhaps the switch failures are not at the tabs, but in the middle of the dome? Combine that with the change in nylon and it looks like Apple made an effort to improve the performance, consistency and strength of the main area of contact for the switch.

The newer ones are really, really nice in terms of accuracy. They click like buttons, its different but actually more tactile than a traditional keyboard, you get used to it and I think most people find it to be a huge improvement for the most part. The only reason people flip shit is because if grime gets under them they get stuck. I think similarly to the Mac Pro of 2013 they over engineered themselves into in awkward corner where they have something amazing but also bottlenecked. I got rid of my 2017 after the keyboard failed a second time. Fingers crossed that this time around they nail it. Waiting a couple months but I will fully spec one if the consensus is that the keyboard is much more resilient.

Is it really worth it though? I mean my mom and sister change out their windows running laptops only once every 2-4 years (i use desktops which last longer if you change componenets and not the whole thing) and they don't even have to keep the same company and we only had a single laptop break before 2 years of use. Which was because our cat kept pulling out the power cable on my mom's dell laptop while it was charging and the slot into which you plug in the power broke. And it was an easy repair. We bought the replacement for 14 bucks on amazon, opened the sucker up and switched out the component as fairly incompetent in that aspect people. It took about an hour of my time on a weekend. Otherwise we never had any other breaks for either of their stuff and they only change their laptops out every few years to get better processors and graphic cards so they never have to suffer their computers slowing down. This seems a lot more cost and time effective then having to buy new tech every year in hopes they fixed the issue with the new one. And then still having it break down and having to spend a lot of time money and effort to fix that shit. We had an apple laptop once. That shit broke every 2-3 months I swear. And was only somewhat usable for around 9 months after which it became the slowest computer I have ever had to use. It had the processing brain power of a flea goddamnit. Not a single fond memory of using that machine, it was nighmarish pretty much starting the first week of it being in heavy use. Pro my ass. But maybe I am just biased on my overall bad expirience with their stuff. Except my ipods. Which I have 2 of. Both now super old. Both still work as if they are new. Both can easily sync on my windows computer. Just 2 perfect pieces of technology. Why they can't make the rest of their stuff as quality as their ipods, I don't get. Besides those 2 everything else we tried from them has consistently been absolute crap. The phones and the computers.

I'm pretty sure apple replaced my 2018 keyboard with this 2019. I don't know if it was I had "worn out" the old keyboard but I feel as this keyboard requires more force to push down if that makes sense. The keys just seem to move less, they're a bit softer, and harder to press down. It might be me but it feels different. I'm not sure what I like more. It feels like I'm "exercising" my fingers but it feels softer. Overall, I'm just I don't have any issues YET. I'd have had to stop like 20 times with the previous keyboard to delete repeated characters .

I remember the S6 having bad battery life, no sd expansion, and less updates. Now I have the unlocked Note 8 and there is no bloatware, sd expansion, far better battery life, and more security updates. I had doubts before I bought the phone because I had a shitty experience with the S5 and S6 but they caught up. Look at Samsung now, people like the company more. Cool video. I like the unbiased approach. I think Apple should “re-invent” their “Pro” laptop and come up with a workstation class laptop that meets the needs of video, audio, imaging, programming and scientific users, and call that the Pro. Then this class of MacBook could be the Pro Air or Pro Thin, or whatever marketing wants to call it. But this is why I avoid laptops altogether. The entire design is a compromise.

I have an older like 2015??? macbook pro with the old keyboard everyone likes and i find the buttons far too small and kinda squishy. • @boysent

They should have at least put the two switches in the SEM to see if different alloys were used. If same alloy (likely) they could have done hardness testing to see if the new switch is stronger than the old one. Both are pretty quick to do. It seems that the consultant only wanted to look at the parts under his stereoscope, and not really doing more testing. Too bad.

I think they fixed the problem with the 2019 keyboard, but it was already too late for apple to recover from bad reputation and decided to include the 2019 model in the keyboard fix recall just in case. And discard the butterfly mechanism for Macbook Pros next generation (design was over due for 2020). But Macbook Air? only time will tell, but I bet at least the 13-inch will probably get a 14-inch revision and a a scissor keyboard as well. This thinner keyboard will only see light in slimmer macbooks if ever again.
