The 16" ARM macbook is really what I want but seems unlikely because (a) intel doesn't even have a Tiger Lake chip ready for it until Q1 2021, or (b) if Apple jumps right to ARM, they are lagging on the gpu front. It's possible it could be mid-2021, or late 2021, but no one know =/

I'd feel more comfortable if official failure rates were ever published. There's some scattered reports of the 3.5 gen Butterfly keyboard failing but it doesn't seem as widespread, but at the same time it was old news by then, so I'd really love actual numbers which we'll never get out of Apple.

The old Butterfly keys didn't have adequate cushioning to dissipate the hammering force of typing fingers. Those keys didn't have a "rubber cushioning" of some kind and that was why some people complained of key travel factor diminishment. Apple just needed to apply some rubber cushioning seal ring of some kind so that there would be a simulated sensation of some significant pronounced key travel effect being felt while typing.. I guess. Those MacBooks were and are still cool anyway.

I got a 2018 high end 15 (2.6 i7, 512Gb, 560x) for only $1100 last month. I bought it as "parts not working", the seller stated that the touchbar is cracked and not working. I took the risk and got it anyway. It turned out that the touchbar is fine, just the left corner is blacked out. Then I went to an Apple certified repair shop and got the whole topcase replaced for the keyboard. Now I got it with a brand new battery and keyboard, and even the touch bar has been replaced along with the topcase. Pretty good.

I know this video is a little older but I figured Id share. I was lucky to get my 15 inch MacBook Pro. I bought it from someone who thought it was broken since it wasn't connecting to apples servers to redownload the OS. She said she took it to apple and they told her the logic board was bad. She ended up selling it to me for $150.00 and claimed that she bought it for about $3000.00 at the time. I was able to reinstall the OS by having it install off a USB. So far Im really glad I took the risk. It turned out to be the 2017 15 inch MBP with the 3.1 GHz i7/16GB/1TB SSD/Radeon Pro 560. I also repasted the CPU/GPU cus fans were constantly running, after doing so this thing never has to turn them on unless Im doing something much more intensive

Not a terrible idea. I'm thinking of upgrading from my 2018 13" touch bar to something with a little more horsepower, and after selling my current one, I could effectively spend only a few hundred bucks for something that still has a decent amount of power to keep me happy until the Apple Silicon ones come out in a year or two, and maybe even give me time until a generation or so has passed (I learned that lesson the hard way when I rushed out and bought a Core Duo [not Core 2 Duo] MacBook when they transitioned to Intel).

Sticking with Early 2015 13 inch until 2023. What I am looking to upgrading to is the 2020 iMac. I seriously don’t want to experiment with a Rev A Apple Silicon iMac. I am also looking at my usage, I rarely go anywhere with my MacBook Pro, a bigger screen is always welcome and it would be great for more the relax and unwind moments I want after work: Netflix and UA-cam. I was watching a DW documentary about the origins of life on earth on my iPad Pro, even though it was great, I was thinking how much nicer this would have been on a 27 inch 5K screen. Also, I’m living somewhere with cheap rent, don’t see myself moving anytime soon, so, it be a good long term machine to have around.

16' also has a keyboard problem, Caps lock works 1/5 times and the metal arms designed to support keys like caps and shift start rattling pretty quickly. It won't be a massive problem IF you have a warranty, mine was replaced in 5 days without any questions.

I’ve got 15 inch 2,6ghz/16gb ram. It was a pretty solid piece of machine back in early 2019 when I bought it, and it’s still a great powerhouse for 98% of my tasks. Other 2% is a pain in the ass for everything except some AMD EPIC workstation, but 2% isn’t much and I can handle it with my mbp, even if it goes slower than I’d like to. For example, I can just leave it to do the math overnight with maxed out fan speeds in a cold room :)
I’ve got minor issues with the keyboard, but I love butterfly for about 5% typing speed increase in my case. For 95% of users it’s absolutely certain overkill of performance for the price.
And yes, it paid off for 1,5 months after I bought it, so I don’t hesitate paying Apple tax if it makes me much, fu%king MUCH more productive! I think I will give this machine to my girlfriend and buy a new one for myself, smaller and lighter, but with the same performance, when Apple silicon comes out later this year.

Sometimes some keys feel that maybe something happens, but it doesn't happen (I still wish it will happen so I can sell it with brand new battery).
Considering Butterfly macbooks - I'd be happy to buy 32gigs 2018-2019 macbook refurbished from apple or someone else (to have 4 year keyboard warranty) and be happy with it for a while.

For a few hundred more you can get a 2019 15" MacBook Pro with an Apple warranty from the refurb section of the Apple Store. 512 Gigs RAM and 560X graphics. 8-Core i9. Just checked the Store.

As an original owner of a 2018 I feel jilted by Apple for not really fixing the issues these MacBooks had and now the second hand values are showing this.
I’ve personally yet to have my keyboard fail but the battery is surprisingly in poor health for its age (84% with 160 cycles) so I’ll probably have the whole top case replaced soon.

I‘m totally fine with my 15-Inch MacBook Pro from Mid-2009 with Core 2 Duo and „ANTI-GLARE-HIGHRESOLUTION-DISPLAY“
    And guess what,
    it has a Magic Keyboard😏
    Something the 2019 15 Inch doesn‘t have 👌🏻

2018/2019 15" MBP with i9 has any high-temperature issue? If not hurry to buy a MBP right now, why don't wait for Oct or even the end of this year? Even Apple only reveal low-end MBP models, but it gives hints to us how powerful Apple Silicon is. If it's not the case, think about buying 2018/2019 used MBP is still not too late. 1-2 years old second-handed MBP will not tremendously decrease in ebay. So in conclusion, wait for the first Silicon appear before the end of this year, and make the decision go or not go.

intel macbooks are still worth considering. specifically if you want windows support. when the M series laptops stop being supported with updates you kinda have no where to go with it.

I think people are assuming too much. I do not believe there will be a silicon (ARM) Macbook available this year. It might be announced later, but the next OS version is still X86. I think the ARM-style Macbooks are going to be available next year - maybe early Spring.

It's potentially a good value if the buyer is okay with dealing with the downtime from keyboard failure and service and the unclear financial future associated with keyboard failure. When the repair program ends, the replacement cost currently will be $199 provided you request a "battery replacement" and *NOT* a "keyboard replacement" (in which case you will get a new keyboard when they replace the battery as it's the same service.) That said, when the repair program ends, if Apple becomes more strict about "battery replacement" and only will do the $199 "battery service" if the battery tests below a certain threshold, someone needing a keyboard replacement might be stuck with a MUCH larger bill. And do understand that the replacement keyboards still use the butterfly mechanism. They are slightly tweaked from earlier generations, but they still have longevity issues and they still tend to fail and their failure still seems to be accelerated by prolonged heat.

A lot of the mentioned $1600-$1800 models @6:20 have a reason that they are cheaper. Opened boxes, refurbished, pre-owned. So, it's not new.
even tho, almost half price is still insane.

Can you publish a detailed video comparison of i9 15 inch vs 16 inch i9 macbook pro ? I do strongly feel its more or less competant to each other. I own a 15 inch i9 mid 2019 , its very compact, doesn't experience thermal throttling and benchmarks is almost as same as the 16 inch macbook pro. The only difference might be the keyboard and sound quality.

Though 15” mbp could be a cheap deal; but there will always be that feeling of keyboard failure and s/w ESC key which has history of freezing intermittently. Buying 2019 model would also mean loosing 1 yr on the keyboard replacement program. This is just a thought, not to undermine the efforts put in for this video or the money spent by people who already own it.

I love my MacBooks. I have had all three generations of butterfly keyboard for my work MacBook Pros and they were all awful. In fact, I am typing on a third gen now. There is no backpressure from the keys as you type, so after a long day of typing the ends of your fingers are sore and your hands are tired. Also, when you type, the keys are loud. So loud, in fact, that my wife asked me about it. I still have a 2014 MBA for personal use that I haven't replaced precisely because of the butterfly keyboards. Now that Apple Silicon is on its way, I plan to wait even longer. If I can get a MacBook with scissor keys and an ARM processor then I will be a happy camper. Let's hope that the rumors of butterfly keyboards returning to the new lineup are false

I snagged a base 2017 15 inch MacBook Pro for 925$, it was all beaten up with dents and paint fade, then I called apple for a keyboard replacement I ship it to them and next thing you know is they replaced my logic board display and housing all for free so essentially I paid 925$ for a 15 inch MacBook Pro which I feel like it wasn’t a bad deal

Will an ARM processor ever be as powerful as a Xeon or i9, though? I just got a fully pimped 16-incher because, if anything else, I have a VERY fast Winblows machine when the (unfortunate) transition is complete, so, in a weird way, I have two machines fo the price of one, and I’ll have more or less universal compatibility with over 90% of the world’s personal computers. Peace.

Why would they intel-refresh the 16"? Or rather, why would we care if they did? Intel 10nm chips even in 11th gen will seemingly only be 4c/8t SKUs tops. 10th gen intel 6/8-cores were pretty much rebrands and it looks like an "11th gen" would be the same unless they wait and brand Rocket Lake as those in 2021.

One interesting thing as well, 32bit apps will not work on any 2020 models without virtual machine type deals, or ancient public dev versions of catalina which as far as I know are not hardware optimized.
I'm sorry but I have native 32bit extensions and apps I do not want to even try to run in virtual or inside of some chameleon type setup

I'm confused, I want a 15" I can still run Adobe CS6 on that (means Mojave or less). Right now I'm using it with OS10.13. Is the 2015 15" DG still the best for the $? or should I go with newer? Thanks, I'm confused because I remember you saying the butterfly keyboard was not particularly good.

I had MBP 2017 once and the keyboard really is a mess. It really gave me tons of problems. In and out of Apple Store for repairs. Luckily I still got my MBP 2012 A1278 as back up in which I NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS (except for the battery ofcourse which is aging). Butterfly keyboard is really an improvement.. improvement to sell and dispose🤣🤣🤣✌🏻✌🏻
