      I collect and repair devices from anywhere from 1920s to about 2010 (after that it's kind of a nightmare) and all plastics get brittle over time. some are better than others, but all get brittle. That's fine for cases that are not structural, but clips almost always shatter, like even before they release.

    They should give a seperate grade on how easy it is to get the part/have it work and if possible take in consideration its price. Its nice to see that you can change it but where to find it and for what price (some times the replacement will cost you more then the product itself), if you find the part will you be able to replace it or its going to be software protected and the part isn't going to work if it is not reprogrammed by a professional store.

      Newer cars are too complex for a layperson to fix. You have to buy the factory service manual, read them, and see how to do the job, then decide if you can fix the problem with your present experience, tools, and time. If any of the three is missing or incomplete, let the dealer do the job at least the first time. I have done car repairs since 1965 and I know when and why the dealer should do it.

    I took apart my Xbox one x multiple times and it’s so easy to take apart compared to the awful ps4 slim with a billion screws, so many of which are so different 🤦🏻‍♀️

  •  4 роки тому +1

    So repairability score is only given by how easy it is to take apart a device?
    You can not say that something is easily repairable, when pretty much no one has access to parts needed for repairs. For an example, the Galaxy buds got repairability score of 6 when the only real thing that was "user serviceble" was the battery. Also, you scratched the headphones while opening them, leaving them to look ugly once reassembled (no one would like to wear something hacked up). The charging case was also easy to open, but there was nothing to repair/replace in there, because there are no parts available.

    • @capnsmashem3284
      @capnsmashem3284 4 роки тому

      The batteries are replaceable, and they are pretty easy to find. At least every part on everything they took apart in this video is readily available and easy to find (except the macbook). I am not sure what you are referring to. As far as what is user serviceable, unless you own a semiconductor manufacturing plant or full micro repair shop, I don't thing you'll be working on component level on a device who's circuit board is the size of a pinky nail. The main thing you're going to want to fix is poor battery performance with a device like this. Most defects would be noticed within the 1 year warranty, anything outside of this is technically normal wear and tear, however, we know electronics can last much longer than their batteries, unless you are the kind of person that tosses out a perfectly good xbox controller when the AA's die, then sure. For most of us, the battery is the only thing we'll be needing to replace on such a small device. Any other component failure, in a device with so few, so small, and so fragile components, points to device failure. A set of headphones is not as component heavy and complex as a smart phone. Yeah, we just wanna know how hard it is gonna be to swap in a new battery in a couple years so we can get our money's worth. My galaxy buds shipped with a defective bluetooth receiver. Samsung over-nighted me a replacement set, no hassle. They're flawless, and in a year or two, I'm gonna swap out the battery and keep on chuggin' along. Though, I am interested in something with better sound quality, like some Grado's, or the new Panda's by Drop with their proprietary THX designed preamp. Those seem pretty good.

    Repairability will increase cost, reduce reliability, reduce water proofing, and increase size. Less repairable phone are more green - for example iPhones today last a long time and have a robust secondary market. Remember back in 2008 when phones died after getting a little bit wet even though most phones had a replaceable battery? That certainly was not green and most customers do not want to go back to those days.

    • @capnsmashem3284
      @capnsmashem3284 4 роки тому

      Ahhh, but you fail to remember all the water proof and water resistant devices that are repairable... You also fail to remember all the non-repairable phones, that happen to have no water resistance whatsoever. Cost, reliability, water proofing, and size, are not completely interdependent. The Galaxy s5 has an official water resistance rating of IP67, a removable battery, micro SD card slot, and Samsung provides a way to obtain licensed replacements of nearly every component. It is every bit as compact as nearly any other smartphone released at the same time, and is just as reliable with great longevity. This month I have, in my job working for a cellular provider I will not disclose, I have encountered nearly two dozen perfectly functioning S5's, that simply needed a new batter. Newer Samsung devices with ratings of IP68 that Samsung firmly stands behind, are more compact, durable, and reparable than most comparable phones on the market. Apple will advertise water resistance, but will not stand behind this marketing when the consumer's device is damage by contact with moisture, meanwhile, when it comes to repair, the back glass is super-glued on to modern iPhones, and as such, repairs of many components are nearly impossible, leading them to recommend replacement of the entire device in many circumstances. "Most customers" speaking globally, had a very different experience to what you are describing. Most customers specifically in the US however, had iPhones, so yeah, water damage, dead phone, new phone, that logical progression was very present for the iPhone user. I on the other hand have every phone I have ever owned in a shoe box with their respective chargers, with the exception of the note 8 that I traded in for a promotion, and every single one still works, charges, and boots up. My LG Envy2 can still fire up a game of monopoly, risk, or tetris... My Moto Razr v3 still works perfectly, and brick breaker is still a lot of fun, but there aren't any decent carriers that support 2g anymore, but otherwise, it's in perfect condition. Even dropped it in the river once by accident. I was once tempted to purchase an iPhone when they announced the 5s back in 2013, but with the sheer frequency of people around me having to replace their shattered, drowned, bricked, crashed, or outdated iPhones, 2013 was the turning point for me, when I decided I was going to start off my smartphone journey with android and see what was up. I researched phones for about a year really, until I got together the money, and went out and got the LG G3 in 2014. Yeah... it bounced instead of broke, batteries were 6 bucks instead of new-phone-bucks, all the apps, customization, size, call quality, speakers, the display was flippin' 1440 x 2560 when apple was pushing a dull 750x1334... The list goes on and on. I paid $169 for it, and the iphone 6 was going for $649. So, more of everything? Same form factor? Longer battery life? Cheap batters that are quick swap-able and user replaceable? SD expansion slot? High res display? Integrated GPU that could handle, at the time, cutting edge mobile games like Monument Valley and Hearthstone. Meanwhile Apple was dropping iOS updates that killed everyone's iPhone 5 and eventually 5s off XD I have been laughing to the bank ever since. @capnsmashem3284 4 роки тому

      @@dodoontherocks Magic trick, wired headphones are wired, so you can just pop one out and let it hang. Most in-ear buds cancel out that vast majority of noise(30-90 percent depending on cartridge design, and ear tip material(marshmallows/memory foam tips absolutely crush external noise of all kinds). The only reason the noise cancelling in the AirPods pro has any significance to it's target market is because the previous iteration of airpods did a very bad job of sealing out external noise. In terms of audio fidelity, they also don't even come close to a $40 pair of SoundMagic ear buds so... yeah. Also, with wired ear buds, the battery in your headphones(there isn't one), doesn't just die at the worst possible time. It also seems ironic to want noise cancellation AND audio pass through, the same gesture, with wired headphones (raising a hand and momentarily touching your earbud) gives a similar result. For pass through while listening, just let them sit in your ear loosely, and to shut out the sound of a screaming baby on a long flight, jam em in deep and crank it. Hard to justify the minor shift in quality of experience against exponential cost and lack of longevity. Spending $250 on a pair that was clearly made to be disposable in exchange for some minor tweaks to already present "passive" capabilities of standard ear buds seems silly.

  • @ajfromca
    @ajfromca 4 роки тому

    I dont think the Mac Pro earned a 9/10, it feels like apple got brownie points for how much they deviated from their norm. Yes its a massive step forward for apple, but the SSD being locked to the T2 chip and the only way to get repair parts is from either apple themselves or the IBM repair program for enterprise customers should really dock a few points. If you need to replace or upgrade your SSD either apple has to do it or you have to use PCIe based storage (for as long as they allow that). Yes upgrades are fairly simple baring the SSD, but for repairability it is garbage due to not being able to source parts like a motherboard or a new PSU. There is a guide on apple.com for how to remove the PSU but I am not seeing a simple way to order a new one once your warranty runs up, saying how easy it is to repair but not being able to get the parts is meaningless.

      Not really, the Airpods Pro have an IPX4 rating which is rated for sweat, splashes, and rain. They are not waterproof. Compared to direct competitors, they have only marginally better water resistance, and under the circumstance that they are in their case, or within your ear, and not being directly hit by fast moving water, many brands of wireless earbuds perform relatively the same. It is understandable that it would be difficult to repair a low profile headphone with something like an IPX7 or 8 rating, sure.
