For the many curious people, they're reaching to their right in the exits of the long straights to prevent engine seizure and to lubricate the engine with oil/fuel only. They cover the air box with their hand to prevent air from entering the carb for a short period of time, this allows the driver to race very lean.
covering the air intakes on the airbox creates a vacuum because the engine is still trying to pump air through, the energy coming from the kart's inertia . Covering the air intakes without keeping your foot on the accelerator (and thereby keeping the butterfly open) pulls a big jet of fuel into the engine and 'loads up' the crankcase with a lot of fuel/oil mix. As the engine is still turning, that fuel mix gets thrown up into the top of the cylinder , and then out the exhaust which take a lot of heat with it. . If you do this when racing you only need to cover the intakes for about a second at most. At 13000rpm, a full second of intakes covered is just over 215 squirts of fuel into the engine. Cover just one port and you get a lot less fuel mix ( not as much vacuum) and so a few seconds covering the ports is OK. The technique is also often used at the end of main straights if you are running right on the edge of a too lean mix (which is where max power is) to cool the engine and lower the chance of a seizure. Another use of the port covering is to stop an engine safely if the kill switch fails or you have a stuck throttle or run away engine. Pulling the plug lead off to stop an engine is not a good way to stop an engine, the spark energy has to go some where, back through the TCI , through you (not good if you have any heart issues) . Stall stop, choke stop or kill switch are the ways to do it.
I have huge respect for them...all of them. I am 49 and started karting just a year ago really. Far too late to ever be competitive but still terrifically challenging. As sports go I love it.....

Wow this is amazing, Nico and Lewis have been battling each other for almost two decades, these guys literally grew up together. The amount of memories they probably have of each other throughout their racing careers must be crazy, all the ups and downs, they are like siblings that have been fighting for their parents love their whole life. There is a whole dimension to their rivalry that we can't see form the outside, if everyone wasn't so busy being a fanboy, we'd be able to see how epic this fight between Nico, Hammy and Vettel really is, and how long it's been in the making. If Ferrari can stop butchering themselves, than the next few years of F1 are going to be incredible. Also you can see how Hamilton has always been so greatful, he's interviews have not changes since he was young, no matter what, he always thanks his team and his family and the opportunity itself, that's why he's had so much success. Nico is just as strong as Hamilton, Lewis just gets the edge on him more often.
Actually, there's still a lot depending on the car. You wouldn't believe how much effort and money people are spending on this sports. The big teams buys a couple of engines, try them out, and put together the finest parts to build the perfect engine, which of course is very valuable. Maybe 2 tenths of a second faster than the rest, and that small are the differences in karting. I completely agree that karting actually is more entertaining than many other motorsports, but saying that karting is based only on skill is not true to be honest. I've been racing karts for 8 years, being around 0,1 - 0,2 seconds behind the fastest (and richest), so I can guarantee ;)

It's basically true. But don't forget: Team orders can be forced through changing pit stop strategy and times, too. IMO Mercedes also has team orders. Look at the last races in 2015 how they desperately wanted Nico Rosberg to get second place in the CC.
That was some race. Although, I was kinda shocked to see Hamilton toward the front so early on in the race because I thought he said he was starting in 19th.
