    If you have been following me for a while you'll know that I love mixing through my analogue master bus chain.
    It gives my mixes the glue, punch and energy we've all come to know and love on our favourite records.
    Over the years, I've mixed many great sounding records such as Aerosmith, Ace Frehley, The Fray, and most recently the new Rick Springfield album though my go-to Stereo Bus mastering chain: A pair of Pultec EQs and a SSL Bus Compressor.
    Today, we are going to put up the Tegeler Audio Crème Bus Compressor/EQ up against one of the best stereo bus chains in the world!
    - That's $1,700 vs $10,000 of equipment!
    I was absolutely blown away by the results of this comparison: The Crème adds amazing punch and glue, without muddying up the low end or dulling out the mix. The mids and highs are transparent and clear and open up the track beautifully.
    Please check out the video and enter the giveaway to win the Crème compressor!
    Many Thanks,
    Warren

    Just some side info: The name comes from the district in Berlin called Tegel wich is where they are located. And in Germany only companys that exclusively build everything by hand are allowed to call themselves "Manufaktur". Greetings from Cologne :)

    Tegeler is so much cleaner and modern sounding! Not that the SSL + Pultec is bad in any way. We would prefer the Tegeler 99% of the time on the master bus. Thanks for the amazing review.

    It made me smile to see how stoked you were with a new piece of gear, glad you aren't jaded! That first pass with the unit before switching on the low-cut really sounded crisp, the bass drum flurries and backing vocals gained presence but didn't jump out from the rest of the mix, really noticeable in a good way.

    Maaaaaan! This is almost a bittersweet moment. I love my SSL- G compressor on the two buss. I master with TC electronics and two old school Chandlers (sterling sound setup). This right here shocked the shizzy out of me! I'm no hater of new stuff either. I begrudgingly must state that I thought the Tegeler side-chained with the cut at 60hz (how the f#&k?) sounded warmer, tighter & a bit more present. Thanks for this, I think...
    Seriously thinking I might need me some of this😬

    Hey Warren, great review! Just wanted to point out that the price seems to be around $2000 US based on today's conversion rate! I don't know how much that difference makes to you, but maybe it does for someone watching. Small quibble, I know, and pretty much the only thing I have that isn't 100% positive after watching maybe half of all your videos! Undoubtedly going to watch them all, keep up the great content!

    • @AngeliVazquez
      @AngeliVazquez 7 років тому +1

      I did the conversion also, and yielded the same amount. However, when shipping out of the state, they remove the VAT and other taxes on their items, reducing the total cost for consumers purchasing internationally.

    I always throw in a grain of salt because of what youtube compression can do to a song, but this one was pretty clear to me, and like the rest it is a winner. And that's studio monitors, hdmi tv, and my car. I would like to hear it on something with more dynamic range. No, that's not right. More delicate with room between the notes? Something where each instrument has to stand on their own two feet? That would be of interest to me.
    And yes, the discount? Anything on that?

    Thanks for the video. I did the the registration for the trial, because it actually punched well above its price and was right there with the heavy hitters. When you questioned keeping the SSL that was it. Some of these companies charge what they charge because of nostalgia and name recognition while not giving you much more in performance. As the big studios are shutting down, that is not going to last long-term. Getting a stereo compressor AND eq for $1500 is a steal!

Side note, I was going to buy this anyway, but I held off to see what they were doing for sales this week, and they announced a "Blackish Friday Sale" where you just make an offer and see if they take it. Long story short, I'm getting a SMOKING deal on a bundle of Creme and Gravity Machine!!!! SOOOOOOoOoOoOoOOOOOO excited! I have bought a unit about a year ago. Man, this is a great unit. I can't say anything negative of it. I use at the end of the chain on the master bus and it gives this superb sound we want to hear. You can push the settings to the extreme and still is going to sound round and warm. I'm really happy with this machine. It brought my studio to another level. To get the sound I wanted, with the right compression and right clarity, I had to spend a lot of time with the equipment that I already had. With the creme, I get this after a few seconds! It seems that everything that you throw on it comes out in the right way. I have tried many compressors and many eq's, hardware and plugins, and still this is at the top of my choice. I totally agree with Warren that it's really a bargain for what it is. The customer service of this company is also something I have to mention. These guys are super. They really care about the customers and their products. You get here the best support.
    They are making a lot of good stuff.
    I just have the Creme, I didn't try the other gear, but I have hear just good things about those in every forum.
    I think this is by far the best investment I have done in studio gear. I really recommend this company.

    Impressive EQ/Comp unit !
    Definitely bang per buck
    There's a certain "phase-rightness" (for lack of a better phase) with your SSL Comp + Pultec's, Warren.
    Vocals had more roundness while maintaining the crispness of the snare.
    The Tegeler matched it pretty darn well tho' !
    Even with side chain OFF, there seemed to be an extra amount of music in the basement .. perhaps more than the SSL/Pultec ?
    EQ -> Comp is def. the way to go
    Comp --> EQ duck'd the vocals and phased in the low mid .. to my ears.

    IMO the SSL/Pultec sounded better (more dense and present)...the Créme does sound great too. Often I mix differently for different 2-bus chains - anticipating the processing to come. Thanks Warren - nice pop production and good to hear you're working with Rick Springfield!

    • @matthewtoomer2181
      @matthewtoomer2181 7 років тому

      Arthur Stone sorry i dont mean to be rude but your missing the point, this thing is for mastering. I agree with the poltecs sounding fuller and better but mastering isnt about audio excellence but audio excitment. The creme adds more groove and pump and sounds more musical! Mixing is for getting the best sound so then i would use the poltecs, but mastering id use the creme everytime, im sold Thanks Warren, fingys crossed for this one

    • @ArthurStone
      @ArthurStone 7 років тому +2

      Hey no problem; I don't think you're rude...maybe confused; this isn't a mastering device...it's for mixing engineers - Tegler say so on their website; also we're listening to it in a mix context. I'm listening on AKG K702's (and Focal CMS40's) and to my ears the SSL/Pultec sounds more authentic. This is my opinion, not a fact, but the same is true of your opinion too. Good luck :D

    • @matthewtoomer2181
      @matthewtoomer2181 7 років тому +1

      Thats intresting! Im too lazy to read the website but by my ears it sounds more like a mastering compressor, there is a simple solution,win the lottery and get both, cos for sure pultecs and ssl for mixing....

    • @ArthurStone
      @ArthurStone 7 років тому +1

      Definitely get both...when I win :D
      BTW I think the Créme sounds great; I think this'll really work well in the home/project studio as a mixbus finisher or for home mastering. Great prize; good luck!

    Great video Warren. I use for many years Tegeler Audio gear and can only recommend this company. The cream is firmly fixed in my mixing chain and I leave the settings mostly unaffected. You should also test the Pultec Style EQ-P 1, and the Tube Summing Mixer TSM could certainly be interesting for many soundpeople. I also use the VTRC recording channell for the certain something or to Get more character in the signal and consider me to buy the Schwerkraftmaschiene Her I like the concept of digital control the analog equipments for the quick recall of my projects. Amazing box. I will win that box for sure! It's mine.
    Warren, I did copy your bus chain and re-mix a song I just recorded. The result is awesome. This is my mix bus chain as from now (plugins):
    - Slate VMR --> SSL 4k emulation
    - Bax EQ ( I do have waves puig tec, but like the bax eq better although the frequencies are not exactly the same as the pultec)
    - Slate VBC --> slate grey compressor (emulation of the SSL). I use exactly the same settings / Or my Vertigo compressor.
    - HG 2 (Black Box Analog Design)
    - Slate VTM

    Wow, this unit sounds amazing, thanks for the comparison! I'm also curious about comparing some more dynamic material. Tegeler got some really interesting stuff in their program, e.g. a vari-mu-comp with motorized knobs. How cool is that! Furthermore these guys seem to have a fine sense of humor, according to the names of their devices. Their compressor is called "Schwerkraftmaschine" which, directly translated, means "Gravity Machine". BTW Warren, you're pronouncing "Tegeler" correctly :-)

    I actually preferred the Creme here. I generally prefer the sound of solid-state Pultec-style EQs because tubes can fold. And that produces some unpleasant distortion on the low end that makes it thin out. With a solid-state Pultec like on the Creme, the low end is deeper and more focused.

    I like the SSL + Pultec better. It has a texture to it that puts an "edge" around each mix element and places them in a space, leading to greater separation. Listen to the kick drum, for instance. It's better defined. With the Tegeler everything kind of blends together.

    SSL+Pultec sounds well congealed, but almost a bit dull comparing to the punchy and sparkling Tegeler. Tegeler makes the vocals beautifully stand out and there's some sweet top end to it, and there's no mud in lower mids. SSL+Pultec sounds muddier and a bit dull, less fun:)

    wow. Wow. WOW. i can't believe that such a "cheap" piece of gear competes with multi-thousand dollar equipment
    on this track especially, since it was a dry sounding song, it really brought it to life!! the best setting i like was the eq / comp / side chain. i did not like the eq after the comp. this sounded dull to me. with the eq first the comp really makes the eq pop
    with an eq and a comp in one unit, to say this is a very good deal is truly an understatement

    Lovely comparison, sounded both brilliant. The Tegeler brought the voice a little bit more "in your face", the Pultec/ssl mix sounded a tiny bit more "tamed" for my ears. If the motto would be "You better love somebody" I would say: Both! Any chance you could voice your opinion about the Kush tube emulation/ mike preamp simulation plugins like the Omega 458a or do a comparison with Little Radiator etc., since it is only 30 Dollars? Just saw your video with the Softube Saturation Knob workaround in Studio One (which I`m working with) and love it!

    Comp->EQ + Side Chain sounded very close to the SSL + Pultecs, the old gear was warmer but maybe a little over dominant on this very fat mix. Just my 2ps worth! :o)

    SSL and Pultec sounds much better to me , warmer and smoother sound

    • @neve1064
      @neve1064 4 роки тому

      You get what you pay for in this world we live in but you have to consider price. So I’d say for a 1/10 of the price of the Pultecs and the SSL comp, you get 80% there with the Créme. You could build a G SSL DIY comp and a pair of Pultec EQs but I doubt you’d save much money. So, all that said, the value is definitely there for this Tegeler unit.
      As far as the difference in sound, I found my body tensing up a little when listening to the Créme but not so with the Pultec/SSL combo. The Tegeler’s high frequencies are a tad bit harsh to me.

    I'm hearing(just on an iPhone btw) that Warrens SSL plutec combo seems to push the mid range into more of crushed vibe, the Tegelar is maybe less coloured? And retains quite a lot of dynamics top end and low punch...?

    Hi Warren, thanks for your always inspirational videos!
    Really loved your comment about your approach to music which you stated at during the show “Pensados place”.
    You still have so much enthusiasm and a good vibe.
    To me it’s all about this “thing” to be able to preserve the energy of a piece of music in a way that it creates a reaction with the listener.
    I was looking into the Drawmer 1973.
    Would be interesting to see how the SSL/Pultecs/ Tegeler Créme would relate.
    Have a merry Christmas!
    Greetings from L.A. (for a few hours more.)
    Angel

    • @6stringks
      @6stringks 6 років тому +1

      Produce Like A Pro, Thanks for your reply Warren!
      I am really taken by this 1973 because I could use it creative on the 2bus and I could use it probably also during tracking aswell, i use Apollo stuff ITB at the Moment and want to get some ok'ish outboard gear to make demo "masters"..if you had the choice between them would you go Tegeler first?
      (And if my stuff is good enough I will have rather a proper project/production with you than getting top gear and "don't know" how to use it)
      Cheers and greetings from Rome! Angel

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  6 років тому +2

      Hi Angel, yes! I would highly recommend the Tegeler! I like to go out of the box for the master bus when I can!

    • @6stringks
      @6stringks 6 років тому +1

      Produce Like A Pro thank you Warren!
      I have changed my chain a little, into a "good raw recording chain" with my 2 recently brought Pre's
      (UAD 6176 and the LA 610) with Brauner Phantera Mics into Apollo 8, that is good enough I suppose.
      Now I hear so much more!
      Bringing myself up to play the complete album backwards and be liquid.
      Then make a good raw mix (propper mic'ing, freqencies etc.) to send to a external studio with the bells and whistle equipment.
      Or go to a propper studio and do this entire process there.
      In your last FAQ video you've said it again :
      ☆creativity beats gear everytime☆ - and I really go with that too.
      Working on my first album now and who knows, maybe we can make one track or more together if my stuff turns out to be good enough...
      Cheers from Rome/Italy and really thank you very much for your response.
      Angel.
