I worked with a band that had a week in hansa and saw and touched that historic SSL in hansa Blue in studio 1, now I have an SSL UC1 and UF-8 in my home composition production studio and I feel like I am clocking life !
Well done .... worked for me and i have listened to at least four other demonstrators before you ..... I definitely benefited from your demo and liked your humour.
An excellent video presentation - nice production values and content. I have installed a new mixing/mastering station in my studio using a Bus+, Fusion, Big Six, UC1 and UF8 (I use Reaper). They all work very nicely together. Great SSL quality.
Great video and drum sounds! Really cool character that you can add with this, especially with the parallel blend. Nice Headache vinyl on your wall, too ;)
Thank you! Not sure if the wink is just acknowledging the sickness of headache, or that you know I was involved with it - but yeah if you didn’t know I worked on all the headache stuff and recorded it all here 🙂still love those tracks! Thanks for dropping by ✌️
Excellent vid mate. Fun and informative. I have the attention span of a hamster - think this is the first full review of anything I’ve ever watched… 45 mins flew by. Think this is going on the list. Imagine need to be fast to get one!
Thanks Goat of Neptune 🐐 - it was a concern for me too when it first showed up. I’ll admit, I did read through the manual before using it which is maybe a rare thing to do these days, but it made everything very clear and easy to understand. It really doesn’t take long actually using the Bus+ for it all to sink in too. There is lots of text on the front panel indicating features which is also a little confusing when you first start using it, but the text actually becomes extremely helpful once you understand everything and lets you navigate the controls very easily. Glad you enjoyed, take care!
Super Cool Review!! Here comes one Question to be forwarded to the R&D Team of SSL: If you have all inputs running throu a micro controller as I understood it, why the heck wouldnt you also add a usb port to this thing, have you tune on the front panel, save your settings to your computer and have lots of configurations by sidechaining the front controlls from your software. Also you could sidechain the frontpanel live controlling it from the software or even with the UC-1. That would be the ultimate hybrid solution IMO. Analog hardware, real direkt inputs, but also software controlled from your desk with endless profiles with the push of a button. So much potential not beeing used here.
Hey Bro Meister! Don't want to be upsetting to the upset upsetters ;) but I think you did a great job on this vid! Way more entertaining and informational than others. Instead of the cliche clickbate cr@pola so many others use. You did a funny creative and unique intro. Personally the vid was longer than expected but that's why we can fast forward and rewind. The way you do the vid more is better because you hit all the right points. You got me sold on this thing...I currently have Dione and Stam S4000mk2, considering selling one or both for this...I have way too many compressors...need space! Great work man! You got a subscribe from me!
Hey thanks man, appreciate the kind words! Yeah, one of the things I hate the most is all the clickbait nonsense UA-camrs in audio world! I have no interest in that, or becoming part of that, I would rather actually work on real jobs and just occasionally make my own wild videos on things that interest me or I feel I can actually offer good insight on. The Dione is cool, a friend of mine picked up their special Ukrainian coloured version a little while ago - I have not used the Stam version though. Maybe you could sell both, get a Bus+ and something a bit different like the Heritage Succesor... depends what you normally use the two comps for I suppose. I haven't tried that Heritage myself, but I hear great things about them! Cheers mate x
@@DRUMVILLE Yeah I like the Dione and Stam don't get me wrong but the SSL bus+ just does that little bit more. Maybe I can just allocate them for other functions. I was thinking...if you ever get time a nice idea for a video would be to go through your rack gear and talk about why you chose each item and what you use them for typically. You have some good reasonable insight. Always good to get opinions of other engineers.
@@fearmo1852 Yeah I do have some cool pieces! Actually have had a change around of things since this vid was shot and swapped a bunch of things for a Urei 1178... I'm always keen to talk stuff like that, I also do a bunch of cool stuff with guitar pedals which are all hooked up to be used either in guitar chain or at the switch of a patch cable, can be used as hardware inserts. Best thing for now before such a video exists, would be DM me on Instagram and I'll show you the rig and chat about what I've got / what I use it all for. I am taking a little break from IG atm though so don't think I'm ignoring you if I don't get back right away!
That interesting because I use my guitar pedal setup the exact same way. So many unique pedals on the marked and quality has increased so much there is no reason they can’t be used as an insert. Very useful! I don’t get on the gram much anymore. We all have lives here lol if I get back on I’ll reach out.
it’s nice reviv but the music under your conversation, please think again next time 🤞🏽, love the Bus+, i will try to do my best to get one, dyna eq is a great tool and a plus makes for this unit.
I will take it into consideration for the future, IF I do any more of these - but I don't plan on it being a regular thing, it takes way too much time to make stuff like this! Yeah Bus+ is a great tool, really enjoying the extra features it offers so far, I hope you can get one! Thanks Üstündal!
nice video mate. i'd love one of those boxes. try lengthening the release settings on your vocal gate, the music coming up abruptly between sentences is annoying.
Cheers Hugh! Yeah it’s a shame about the gate - was really difficult to monitor that stuff as I was recording it, did a few checks and it sounded OK but then when I reviewed the footage it was a bit choppy in places 😩
i have the neve master bus processor-l use it for master bus. so will this be more for drum bus/gts etc? or will it be redundant buying this ssl? thanks for putting this together lot of time to do so. thank you!
I think they could be a good pairing actually! Hit the bus+ first to do the classic SSL grabby thing on mix and then do a smoother compression on the MBP, limit and the other tricks it has.
Hi Dude, thanks so much for the in depth review! Since You own both - Fusion and the Bus+. I was wondering if both of those units make sense having them in one chain for the mixbus? Some features like the - EQ, - VintageDrive/4k Mode, - HFcomp/DynEQ seem to be redundant then? Or do they offer dramatically different colours?
I would say they make perfect sense to use together and although I don’t know this as fact, I would suspect when SSL designed and made Fusion a few years back now - they definitely had the idea in mind to build a second “expansion” unit focused on buss comp. Fusion is great and offers a lot of colour and shaping for your mix buss - but for me the key mix buss processing sound is compression - which the fusion lacks. It has an insert point though that allows you to add in another piece of gear, and place it before fusions EQ if you choose. That to me sounds like they knew what they were doing well in advance… I think they are great together though, 4K mode is more like “console emulation” than full on saturation, and vintage drive kind of picks up where that left off. So if you want to drive your mix a bit with VD you can, but for more of an actual console emulation sound you can get that from 4K mode on Bus+. Fusion EQ is great, but only two bands so you are always likely doing that smiley face thing. Obvious Bus+ gives you dynamic EQ, but it can also just be treated as two extra bands of EQ where you can put them in low mid and midrange positions to give yourself a full 4 band EQ if you choose. So yeah, I would say they play well and compliment each other very nicely!
I always mix into my mix buss chain. Usually start a session by setting rough levels on faders / gain and pan positions, then load up my mix buss chain and go from there.
No need to be sorry, good question! If a piece of analogue hardware has M/S options such as The Bus+, Fusion, or the TKlizer EQ then the decode and encode is all handled by the unit, you just press the switch the change to M/S mode is all handled by the device for you. Everything gets then gets outputted back in a stereo L / R!
@@DRUMVILLE dude sorry again but I wonder how actually performance against others bus comp in dynamic range and bandwidth that should be a good one👍 cheers
Great vid, I just got mine yesterday and Just wanted to know how did you turn on the vu meter on the right when you are in classic stereo and s/c stereo, bc in default the right vu meter is turned off, and I looked at the manual, followed the instructions and nothing worked….
Page 23 of the manual dude: "Right-Hand Side Meter On/Off - Stereo Modes By default, in normal operation if The Bus+ is in Classic Stereo or Sum S/C Stereo modes then the right-hand side gain reduction meter is disabled. However, this can be changed so that both meters light up and operate in these stereo modes. You toggle the right-hand side meter to be on/off in stereo modes pressing the CH 1 IN switch. If the CH 1 IN switch is DIM WHITE, the right-hand side meter is disabled in stereo modes (default). If the CH 1 IN switch is BRIGHT WHITE, the right-hand side meter is enabled in stereo modes. The backlight of the right-hand side meter will also reflect the current setting." www.solidstatelogic.com/assets/uploads/downloads/The_Bus_User_Guide_1.1.pdf
@@Matthew6101996 no? To do this you need to go into the settings mode when you boot up Bus+. I linked you the manual, it’s all there for you. Have fun!
how did you connect the Gbus plus to the fusion , I connected via xlr in the back but when I pressed the insert button on the fusion I lost all signal ?
@@DRUMVILLE so you are sending from fusion to the input of the gbus plus. There is also mid/left and mid right in on the gbus plus. And than back to return in fusion. So why not connect it that way ? Which i did and when i pushed the insert button all signal died. If i send the signal from the send of the fusion to the input of the gbusplus. That means i can only use the gbus plus when the fusion is on and insert button is pushed in. I also want to use the gbus alone with out going through the fusion every time?
@@shaner36 You are talking about the external side chain routing. If you actually watch this video, I explain exactly what these connections do and are for. It sounds to me like you should get a patchbay if you want the ability to use your hardware units together, but also have the option of keeping them separate. That's a good idea anyway, and probably most people / studios using hardware units will be using a patchbay.
I struggled with my first analog gear aswell. But its not so hard as u think, just confusing at the begin, but actually nothing else then plug an other things in. And the I/O is usualy also no problem. Also there are Tons of videos about that.. so go and get some gear!!!
@@Harrysound trust me.. its a rabbithole.. at the begin i was like yea Tlm 103 is enough with a apollo twin. Now im on u87 ai, 6176 channelstrip, apollo x6 and a bus+
If you’re looking to get into hardware, my opinion is that buying something nice for your mix buss is probably what will give you the biggest impact and value for money - if you’re doing a lot mixing. Something you mix into, that all of your audio runs through and gets shaped by will have a huge impact on your sound. I do find though that a lot of people go into this with the “I’m only going to buy X”, and they end up with a single buss compressor or whatever. That’s great, but the real benefits come when you have a full analogue chain, with multiple pieces doing unique things. You get a culmination effect. Obviously more expensive though 😂
Pro Tools user. Will this work? PT out -> MIx+ in -> Mix+ out -> Fusion Pre EQ in -> Fusion out-> PT in. Trying to wrap my head around how to use both. With this chain I can in theory bypass both modules 100% in and out. These are the only pieces of hardware I own except preamps.
Edit: I see you answered my very silly comment on your "lack" of acoustic treatment. I realised that you very obviously had it installed and deleted my very very silly and shameful comment. I clearly owe you a beer good sir.
I would personally run the Bus+ within the insert point of the Fusion rather than what you are suggesting - although your suggestion would also work. PT Out -> Fusion In -> Fusion Send -> Bus+ In -> Bus+ Out -> Fusion Return -> Fusion Out -> PT In
Hey Bennie can u recommend an opto? It’s time to get some outboard comps. 1176&LA2A. So many options… Black Lion, Kt with mods, other replicas etc d’yu have an opinions man? (Lovin your reviews!) I got the six, the big six, UC1 and now it’s comp time! Hope to hear from u. Thnks so much!
I have the KT-2A with the Black Lion optecell and some fancier preamp tubes, and it’s pretty good for the money! On the other send of the scale you have something like the Tube Tech CL1B. Lovely compressor. I’d actually suggest looking at Vari Mu type compressors too if you want to try something a little bit different, I mostly use my Weight Tank Compressors in place of the KT2A now… worth a look
Hi Benni, thanks a lot for the review, it’s very interesting! I have a doubt… I don’t have hardware of this kind and I am thinking of buying this to give more punch to my music (I make electronic music with Apollo X8 as an audio interface). The only external processor that I have is an Elektron Heat. You think that it’s good idea to invest in Bus+ for improve my music and give it more punch? Thank you for your help and attention!
Hey Roger, maybe you saw in the video but I also have an Elektron Analogue Heat 🙂🔥 it’s a cool unit, I like it a lot. I assume you are mostly mixing in the box with plugins then? Are you familiar with mixing into a mix buss chain, and use compression on the whole mix? The Bus+ can definitely add punch to your mixes, especially when set up with the correct timing variables for attack and releases. Getting them to match with your track and allow enough transients to cut through whilst also having the release set correctly will give you a punchy sound. The SSL bus compressor sound is probably more associated with the term “glue” though. But glue can be punchy too! Glue just means that everything is kind of pushed together and given a cohesive sound - it’s the difference between a bunch of tracks just laid together with different volumes and pan positions, and the sound of a record where everything fits and joins together nicely. I think it could be a good one for you - I would recommend trying one in person if that is at all possible! And if not maybe try out some SSL G Comp style plugins on your mix buss to see if you like the style and sound, and then think about getting the hardware!
@@DRUMVILLE Wow, thank you for your kind and extensive response! I didn't realise you use Analog Heat, it's a fantastic machine! Yes, I mainly mix with plugins, although I'm not very familiar with applying compression to the whole mix. I think it is very interesting to have a hardware to help me with the glue in the mix. For the moment, I'll try it in a plugin... Can you recommend any to try? Again, thank you very much for your kindness :D
@@efectes2ndaris no problem Roger, happy to help :) SSL actually make their own plugin of the bus comp called SSL Native Bus Comp 2. To my ear it is one of the best sounding G-comp type plugins. It is expensive though, and you've just missed it on a big sale price :( Plugin Alliance make one called bx_townhouse Buss Compressor. That ones also really good. There are lots of others, those two are probably my favourites and the best sounding I think. Enjoy!
absolutely, of course! why wouldn't you be able to? As to would I use it for tracking? Yeah probably, but it would be dependent on the situation. Most recording I do here is vocals, and I'm pretty stuck in my ways of just using an 1176 / 2A / Weight Tank. I haven't done acoustic guitars in a while but I would absolutely consider bringing it out for something like that - especially if it's stereo miked. Stick it on feedback mode for gentler compression, I bet it would be lovely. Same for drum overheads. You could also technically use it without any compression and just as an EQ for tracking too if you wanted. So yes, is the answer.
This was dope, great reference track and loved what you did with it... Sounded incredible dude... drummer question: Would you recommend one for mix bus if the drum bus already engages an SSL hw comp (nekotronics clone) for a big huge sound blended with guitar (like in this vid)??? Or would it be overkill? Great presentation also... Subbed !!!
Hey Nick, thanks for the kind words! Absolutely, I am always compressing my drum buss which then feeds a compressed mix buss! You could definitely keep the Nekotronics (heard great things about those) and get an SSL Bus+ - or you could consider getting a different style of compressor for drum buss for another flavour option. For instance my drum buss is an API 2500 - which is another VCA style comp, same as SSL, and features the same sort of time constants for attack and release, it just has a different "American" sound to it. Great for drums, super tight and punchy. Or just go with two SSL styles - nothing wrong with that!
@@DRUMVILLE thanks for this, I'm going to research the 2500 now... kinda wish you had a vid on it... I don't know whether you're into making these type of videos but dude this video is really well done - you're a natural and the loop was banging, best walk thru I've seen in a long time! Thx again I massively appreciate your advice!
@@nickmandleberg I have the API 529, which is basically a 500 series version of the 2500. Yeah I may make more videos in the future, but it takes an awful lot of time and effort - I would rather actually be working on music than spending all my time making youtube videos and pretending to work on music like most other UA-camrs do! I think it's gotta be stuff that I am actually interested in and have a unique insight on, or feel I something worth contributing to the discussion around it. I did the SSL videos because I had that unique insight, being one of the small handful of people to have actually used the products before they released. So watch this space, I may or may not be back 😂

Yep, Trackspacer 2.5 on all system audio, being triggered by my voice. It’s a great plugin for mix use. It works for this instance but I think it’s a little harsh, just wasn’t sure of a better way of doing it!
Haha good question. So when UF8 came out, I had a Mackie MCU Pro which was clunky and frustrating to use and pretty much dying anyway. The SSL looked cool and I was able to get a good price on one from a local music store, so bought it. After a few days of using it I liked it, but had some questions on the core functionailty of it as well as ideas for the future of the 360 software. Through mutual connections I had a slight acquantaince with one of the Product Managers at SSL, and seeing as my questions were quite technical and nerdy (rather than typical tech support stuff), I decided to message and see if they wanted to chat - as well as congratulate them on their new product of course. I guess we just clicked really, and pretty quickly I was asked if I wanted to join the product testing team, signed some NDAs, and like 2 days later UC1 was delivered to me!
@@shaner36 depends on the mix to be honest. Sometimes I'm not using D-EQ at all and just using it as bus comp, and then static EQ on the Fusion. Sometimes I'm using it all!
ok so lots of people saying the drive on fusion is noisy not able to use in mastering. kind of defeats the purpose of analog color? ur thoughts? bought the ssl g bus after ur review. great stuff man
@@shaner36 yeah it’s true that the drive can be a little noisy, but I know lots of people who use Fusions in mastering - I suppose they just use it in moderation. Personally I’m using mine in the mix stage and if it gets a little too noisy what I do is use something like iZotope RX Spectral De-Noise to record a profile of the noise, which then uses AI to remove it.
bloody geat this guy, didnt even know it hat that sat to red button as the other vids are quite lame, quality, saving like a nutball to get this, do you do any drum sessions
Cheers mate! I haven’t recorded drums in a while now, but used to all the time when I worked at different studios. My place is probably a bit too small to track drums comfortably - have done it before but it took a lot of extra time and effort to get things right.
i bought the ssl bus comp on sale , i wonder which is better that one or your exp hardware - i bet the software is better but you make out the hardware is better
Well, you tell me - in what ways do you think that the software emulation of the hardware is better? because it's cheaper? because it's digital? because it has less features and is more streamlined? Two completely different products aimed at different markets, I don't understand what your point is? Buy what you like, no need to be self conscious about it! I don't make out that anything is better, I'm not reviewing this equipment, I'm giving a product overview of features, sounds and the history behind the product. It's down to the viewer to decide what they like and what they want.
@@DRUMVILLE its better because you can save your settings - i dont know if it sounds better than the real thing , but I do have the new M1 mac so since the M1 is more expensive than the ssl hardware you can compare it directly in $$$ to the hardware and my M1 is more expensive , so it is a better product than what you have bought. The ssl plugin is made by solid state so it has the same team who made the hardware make it - its better , face it , its better , you know it and i know it. You know that the software is better than the hardware. You know it and so do I. It is a clearer more natural sound in the computer than the distorted sound of the ancient hardware. Face it , the hardware is a waste of money.
@@justinb9387 What on earth is this nonsense comment? 😂 so you’re saying because a Mac computer costs more than a piece of hardware, it is better than the hardware..? Bit of a strange reach you are making to be honest. Thank you for pointing that out though, I wasn’t aware that the same SSL I am a hardware product tester for, are also the same SSL I am a plugin tester for! Mind blown 🤯
@@DRUMVILLE yes it is the same company , thats why they look the same. RIght , the mac was made by a team which is more complex than the ssl team , so the hardware is more advanced = the the hardware is better than the ssl hardware. So whilst it may not have the looks when it uploads the ssl software and runs it through mac hardware the machine is more complex , it has a more complex sound to it than the ssl hardware. cats are good is my takeaway from that comment haha! Yeah cheers, lets just say that the Bus+ is still here, SSL never got it back :) I would consider doing more videos if approached by a company, but it takes a lot of time and effort to make this sort of stuff so I would have to actually be into the product and feel like I have something of value to actually say or add to the discussion about it - otherwise I'm just making videos every week like every other UA-cam hack, labelling them with clickbait titles and pretending to be some pro that works in the industry, when in actual fact I am just spending all my time rendering out video files and smugly grinning into a camera. *Achieve? Yeah fair enough, however you want to work. I don’t really care for the plugin vs hardware debate, it’s two different ways of working, do whatever you like best!
Sounds too clean and clinical for my ears. It will work really well on certain types of music been punchy but needs to be paired with something else to add some color.
Not trying to upset you bro...you can get 80% of that sound....by running send track with right plugins over to drum bus...then throw 2 bx4000 Gs and bx Townhome Comp and with Analog Obsession....with the right Saturation and Spacial plugins.....with Limiter on mixbus....you got 80% of that sound for about 70% cheaper...I know because I'm doing I've got rack gear....including Warm Audion G Comp
oh no 😭😭😭 I'm not trying to upset you bro... but I have used an awful lot of hardware and have done the whole "buy cheap gear" thing before many times. It ain't as good. Warm Audio particularly. Some of their stuff is alright I will admit, but the rest of their stuff just doesn't cut it for me, including their preamps and that G Comp. They just don't sound good to me - they are like plasticy, clean, vague approximations of the gear they are emulating. Even the Warm stuff I still had that I liked (2 x early WA76 + 2x EQP-WA) has now gone because I wanted something better. Don't get me wrong, I think it's great there is lower priced gear available making this whole thing we do more accessible. Beginners can now buy outboard and go back to learning the basics of engineering outside of the box! Even if you aren't a beginner, and you just don't want to drop thousands on a piece of gear - you now have an actual option! It's great! But you do get what you pay for in most cases. As for plugins. Yeah sure, you could spend as much time as you like stacking chains of plugins together to emulate a bit of gear if that's what you want to do. If you watch the video I don't think I ever said you can't do that. I too am a plugin user and have my own vast collection. At the end of the day, you do what works for you man because that's the most important thing. What do YOU want to do, how do YOU want to work, to get the results that YOU want to hear? Nobody can tell you what's right or wrong, which is exactly why I never said in this video that you couldn't achieve any of these sounds using plugins, or you weren't allowed to use cheaper hardware or clones. I'm simply demonstraighting a new product which despite it not resonating with you, is clearly of interest to lots of other people in our industry! Don't worry, you didn't upset me 😅 good chat x

What does? The drums or the mix? The mix never had no compression on it, was being squeezed by a second compressor after Bus+ and has a limiter at the end of the chain… Drums though, fair enough if that’s what you like the sound of 🤷♂️ I love the sound of smashed drums, but I will admit I was pushing them quite hard just obviously demonstrate the compression. ✌️
Don't judge this great hardware on this inept clown's video. He can't even get his vocal level or sidechain settings right for a voice over, what chance actual music?
Good video but 2 things I found massively distracting, the music playing all the way through while you're talking (you're not American so don't do like the American's do we can hold our attention without constant noise) and your eye's scanning your 'auto cue' gives it a very unnatural feel. Am sure you don't care what I think but I'm just giving an opinion. Mainly though it was the music that prompted me to comment, it's too loud at least (and not very nice sounding for background music too glitchy and harsh) but imo shouldn't be there at all while talking too much. I have actually had to stop watching at around 5 mins it as it was giving me a headache, your voice is TOO quiet and muffled and the music too loud and high freq'd. Other than that, keep up the good work!
😂"Good video... but I stopped watching at 5 mins" Shame you didn't like it, but I'm not here to represent you or your nationality so no need to make some weird bash about our American friends. I'm just me making content on a product I actually have experience with, sorry I had to use a teleprompter. I'm not really interested in fitting into the UA-camr mould to be honest. @@DRUMVILLE O.K I'll take back the 'nice' parts I left and just focus on the fact your video background music is TOO FUCKIN' LOUD. Anyone could hear it's too loud and I'm not the only one that commented on that, or thumbed it up, it's a simple volume adjustment or use no music while talking. As for my supposed 'American slur' , that's in your head.. American productions are renown for not having a second's silence in documentaries etc, that's not 'against Americans' it's against the 'American style of video production'. Sheesh man, just use the feedback and make improvements regardless of who you assume you're playing for.. or, if not, fine... welcome the thumbs down and the lack of views. Not my problem. And I wrote the 'good video part' while it was playing, after 5 mins the music clashing with your voice did my head in that is when I added I had to stop watching (which I did). This is not a troll/hit and run comment but serious feedback. I probably shouldn't even have wasted my time as you seem to know exactly what you're 'trying' to achieve here... :/ good luck!
I hate people who put music on vocals in a video that should explain something. Why the f***** would you do that? Reminds me on these cheap documentaries from BBC. STOP IT!!!!
Well I hate it when random internet losers decide to start moaning in the comments section about insignificant details that bares very little meaning on their lives, and act as if they are experts in cinematography and documentary film making, but you don’t see me making long winded moaning comments about it. Oh wait. You ever actually made a cheap BBC documentary, Tom Downing? I bet it’s a lot more hard work than you think, and guess what? So is making these UA-cam videos, so give me a break and spare me the moaning drivel please 😂 luv benni x
@@DRUMVILLE Listen, you are a PRO and should know better even without me commenting. The most annoying thing is to have music as a background. As a producer myself i find it really difficult to focus on your voice only because I am used to listen to everything at the same time. Don't make it difficult for no reason. Also, the music choice - is this meant to add some drama? Why? The content is good enough, no need to be artistic where there is no need be. And last, i know how hard it is to make these videos. Take criticism for what it is. Looking forward to the next.
@@tomdowning9358 thanks, I can take criticism just fine, your comment was just stupid though 😂 you could’ve just nicely said you would rather there not be music while I’m talking, which if you read some of the other comments on this video, was a point that had also been made several times which I acknowledged. And if you’ve seen any of my newer videos you can see I have taken it on board for the most part - because that’s the thing, I am not a PRO. I don’t know what I’m doing with video and don’t pretend to! I work with audio, not making constant streams of content for UA-cam - I leave all that weekly clickbait rubbish to all of the others on here 😂 I make content about things I actually have experience with and can give a unique insight into, such as the SSL products I have worked as a tester on. Amazing review! Informative AND entertaining ❤️
infotainment or entermative..?
Awesome video as always; looks like a great unit, especially to pair with the Fusion
Cheers Andrew! Yeah it’s an ideal pairing for Fusion, especially with it’s pre-EQ insert. it’s almost like they planned it from the start… 🤔
Got SSL BUS & Fusion. So fine ! ❤😊
I worked with a band that had a week in hansa and saw and touched that historic SSL in hansa Blue in studio 1, now I have an SSL UC1 and UF-8 in my home composition production studio and I feel like I am clocking life !

An excellent video presentation - nice production values and content.
I have installed a new mixing/mastering station in my studio using a Bus+, Fusion, Big Six, UC1 and UF8 (I use Reaper). They all work very nicely together. Great SSL quality.

i was a bit worried about the cramped funtions and doublepresses but you showed up the workflow very nicely
Best fking video I've seen on UA-cam,
Well presented awesome stuff
Thank you very much Dylln!
Very cool video , really enjoyed watching , keep it up , subbed and liked 👍
Thank you!

There is no escaping the DRUMVILLE nightmare
@@DRUMVILLE AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
i have the neve master bus processor-l use it for master bus. so will this be more for drum bus/gts etc? or will it be redundant buying this ssl? thanks for putting this together lot of time to do so. thank you!
I think they could be a good pairing actually! Hit the bus+ first to do the classic SSL grabby thing on mix and then do a smoother compression on the MBP, limit and the other tricks it has.
I just bought the fusion.. should I buy this as well?
sure if you want 😂
That to me sounds like they knew what they were doing well in advance…
I think they are great together though, 4K mode is more like “console emulation” than full on saturation, and vintage drive kind of picks up where that left off.
@@DRUMVILLE thanks so much for taking the time to get back! Helps a lot. Cheers ya!
@@onlyforyoutube9783 no problem!
Do you put the ssl at the beginning of the mix session or when the mix is done ? Thanks
I always mix into my mix buss chain. Usually start a session by setting rough levels on faders / gain and pan positions, then load up my mix buss chain and go from there.

How do you get both meters to work in classic stereo mode?
Read the manual, page 23
www.solidstatelogic.com/assets/uploads/downloads/The_Bus_User_Guide_1.1.pdf
Dude sorry for the interruption, but when you decode in analog to m/s you encode back again in analog or in the desktop!?😧 Sorry for the question
Page 23 of the manual dude:
"Right-Hand Side Meter On/Off - Stereo Modes
By default, in normal operation if The Bus+ is in Classic Stereo or Sum S/C Stereo modes then the right-hand side gain reduction meter is disabled.
The backlight of the right-hand side meter will also reflect the current setting."

@@DRUMVILLE but doesn’t it just bypasses the compression when I press ch1 in and out? It’s kinda confusing
You must be doing something wrong?
Fusion Send -> Bus+ In -> Bus+ Out -> Fusion Return
Well made video :) I’d love all this rack gear but can’t be bothered with the routing
The routing is pretty simple to be honest, patchbay makes life easy if you use it properly

@@efectes2ndaris no problem Roger, happy to help :)
SSL actually make their own plugin of the bus comp called SSL Native Bus Comp 2. To my ear it is one of the best sounding G-comp type plugins. It is expensive though, and you've just missed it on a big sale price :(
Plugin Alliance make one called bx_townhouse Buss Compressor. That ones also really good.
There are lots of others, those two are probably my favourites and the best sounding I think. Enjoy!
Can you use this for tracking?
absolutely, of course! why wouldn't you be able to?
As to would I use it for tracking? Yeah probably, but it would be dependent on the situation. Most recording I do here is vocals, and I'm pretty stuck in my ways of just using an 1176 / 2A / Weight Tank.
I haven't done acoustic guitars in a while but I would absolutely consider bringing it out for something like that - especially if it's stereo miked. Stick it on feedback mode for gentler compression, I bet it would be lovely. Same for drum overheads.
You could also technically use it without any compression and just as an EQ for tracking too if you wanted.
So yes, is the answer.
@@DRUMVILLE thank you 🙏🏻
This was dope, great reference track and loved what you did with it...

It works for this instance but I think it’s a little harsh, just wasn’t sure of a better way of doing it!
so how do you get to be a product tester for them?

Bus + is patched into the insert point of Fusion usually.
The gbus plus has a deq. So are u just using the fusion As a colorbox only? Other than the drive on fusion? Thanks for the detailed video.
@@shaner36 depends on the mix to be honest. Sometimes I'm not using D-EQ at all and just using it as bus comp, and then static EQ on the Fusion. Sometimes I'm using it all!

I think you should take on board what im saying buy a mac and get with the 21st century
@@justinb9387 I hate to be the bearer of bad news Justin, but I am on a Mac 🤯 a Mac Studio M1 Max to be exact - that’s about as 21st Century as it gets. Maybe it’s actually you who is living in the past 🤔
"yeah it's cool n all that but i'm pretty sure you can get the same sound with pl..." SHHHHUUUUUT UUUUUUUPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hated this video so much that I pressed like and subscribe.
That’s the most disrespectful thing I could have imaged anyone doing in response to this video
Very useful video. Nice. You deserve more subscribers. The indie-pop track is too little punchy in low fq that it should be
Your voicover sidechain is way to hectic. Give it some more release and turn down the music a bit when talking.
Yeah I know 🙃 it’s two separate gates one gating my vocal to stop the speakers bleeding into my mic, and then another dipping the mix when I speak - it’s all recorded live and rendered into a track and very difficult to monitor. Would love to find a better way of doing it for any future videos, just didn’t know how to do it this time 🙁
This video was so BAD that I had to coombment suuuubscribe and have a good ol punkawalla laff!..as well I wondered if we could get a few more reviews on a few other bits of shite kit...all plugged in with some grand ol songs...anyway...yerrrr...
- what a nice bit o kit- hope they send you a free one you deserve it...that cat is the star! and offered the best commentary by far!
...oh yeah thanks mon...you're a right ol conundrumvillain! (translated on o' the best reviews I 'ave seen in blighty!)
och aye thanks mon! Oh yeah I almost forgot - cool track and production can hear the effort that went into it great job...I am sure that cat has a lot to do with it...looks like he's bossing the studio like they do!!.. just a footnote neat way to demo the unit and also neat to hear track you have produced..good work
I thought the Bus/Fusion combo sounded better than the TC smoother...but what do I know..and I don't have a cat to help! But I bought a Bus+ to go with my Fusion after seeing your cat squawk!! lol...it had nothing to do with your excellent presentation skills or your video and everything to do with how you showed practical usage and comparisons that actually are really interesting to cats like us!
cats are good is my takeaway from that comment haha! Yeah cheers, lets just say that the Bus+ is still here, SSL never got it back :)
I would consider doing more videos if approached by a company, but it takes a lot of time and effort to make this sort of stuff so I would have to actually be into the product and feel like I have something of value to actually say or add to the discussion about it - otherwise I'm just making videos every week like every other UA-cam hack, labelling them with clickbait titles and pretending to be some pro that works in the industry, when in actual fact I am just spending all my time rendering out video files and smugly grinning into a camera. So yeah, maybe!
@@DRUMVILLE awesome work man and you are a great producer I really liked that track..thanks for taking the time...there were absolutely no problems with anything you presented in fact i think you are seriously good at this..people who want to criticise should really just try and make their own...lol none of them will have or be the right cat! but you are - nice studio love seeing how you are using the gear! seriously dude keep trucking SSL will end up paying you! oh yeah after watching your video I got mine from Funky Junk for $XXXX!! it's a steal!!! hit them for commission...
I am pretty much sure you can archive the same with plugins. Of course turning knobs makes more fun.
*Achieve?
Yeah fair enough, however you want to work. I don’t really care for the plugin vs hardware debate, it’s two different ways of working, do whatever you like best!
"The same"?? Just like that?
Sorry... No...
Sounds too clean and clinical for my ears. It will work really well on certain types of music been punchy but needs to be paired with something else to add some color.
Fusion? Push it a bit more on the drive circuit?
@@DRUMVILLE Be interesting to see how it sounds when pushed.
Not trying to upset you bro...you can get 80% of that sound....by running send track with right plugins over to drum bus...then throw 2 bx4000 Gs and bx Townhome Comp and with Analog Obsession....with the right Saturation and Spacial plugins.....with Limiter on mixbus....you got 80% of that sound for about 70% cheaper...I know because I'm doing I've got rack gear....including Warm Audion G Comp
oh no 😭😭😭
I'm not trying to upset you bro... but I have used an awful lot of hardware and have done the whole "buy cheap gear" thing before many times.
I agree 100% you save so much money getting the most out of your Daw, and really learning how to use plugins to their maximum use
@@DRUMVILLE im with you, had so much warm audio stuff the neve clone for example damn what is that? So weak and muddy.. sold it.. and much other stuff from them sold aswell.. this time i was like try the bus comp.. nah naaaaaah dont do it ... did the right thing went for the bus+. And plugins will never Sound like HW doesnt matter how much u tweak them. Maybe u can Re creat the sonically stage but not the life width and depth u gain from analogue. Tried it, mixed to my references till i realised what im missing is some analog here and there. Just my 2 Cents analog will never die. Peace!
It sounds better without compression
What does? The drums or the mix? The mix never had no compression on it, was being squeezed by a second compressor after Bus+ and has a limiter at the end of the chain…
Drums though, fair enough if that’s what you like the sound of 🤷♂️ I love the sound of smashed drums, but I will admit I was pushing them quite hard just obviously demonstrate the compression. ✌️
Don't judge this great hardware on this inept clown's video. He can't even get his vocal level or sidechain settings right for a voice over, what chance actual music?
... I had to stop at minute 12 because of the annoying background music loop ... please at least lower them in your mix :p
Bit late for that, sorry! 🙃
Good one simplifying the unit.
Ps. It was very hard to hear your voice. The bg music is too loud and continuous.
😂"Good video... but I stopped watching at 5 mins"
Shame you didn't like it, but I'm not here to represent you or your nationality so no need to make some weird bash about our American friends. I'm just me making content on a product I actually have experience with, sorry I had to use a teleprompter. I'm not really interested in fitting into the UA-camr mould to be honest. If thats what you want, there are plenty more channels offering clickbait, "smash that like and subscribe", rehashed misinformation, and 3% discounts on products you've never heard of. Thanks for checking it out though!
@@DRUMVILLE O.K I'll take back the 'nice' parts I left and just focus on the fact your video background music is TOO FUCKIN' LOUD. This has nothing to do with 'YT cliches' it's everything to do with you're playing to sound engineers who use good headphones and have sensitive ears, no? If so then turn down the music Mr Defensive!
@@HappyProducer haha wow oh my
Well congrats on your A* in Film and Media Studies 🎉
I hate people who put music on vocals in a video that should explain something. Why the f***** would you do that? Reminds me on these cheap documentaries from BBC. STOP IT!!!!
Well I hate it when random internet losers decide to start moaning in the comments section about insignificant details that bares very little meaning on their lives, and act as if they are experts in cinematography and documentary film making, but you don’t see me making long winded moaning comments about it. Oh wait.
You ever actually made a cheap BBC documentary, Tom Downing? I bet it’s a lot more hard work than you think, and guess what? So is making these UA-cam videos, so give me a break and spare me the moaning drivel please 😂
luv benni x
Anyway, thank you for your feedback, it does all go on board and hopefully as I occasionally make more of these, they continue to get better 🙂 have a good week!
