I’ve had a bunch of comments asking for us to try out the Looptrotter SA2RATE 2.
So guess what we’re going to do, we’re going to try it out!
I am told this is the first production model and the first one in the US. - So it’s rather wonderful to be able to do this.
We're going to try it out on drums, vocals, bass, and all kinds of things.
I’ve taken a song by an artist named Lilly from our old band Little Empire and we’re going to use the SA2RATE 2 to grit it up a little bit and add some drive.

Really nice sounding unit, adds thickness, and bumps up the RMS without smashing the peaks to oblivion.
That mixbus demo totally sold me; this thing gives a lot of tasty density to the material, and it can be dialed in to lop off peaks without going into unpleasant distortion. Absolutely amazing! :D

Nice Warren, I use the model 1, but I have it set up as an hardware insert on a Sa2rate parallel bus as send/return, so on every mix I send variable levels from my drum bus, bass bus, music bus , vocals bus etc, so in effect I'm using the sends to create a pre mix going into the Sa2rate to drive the unit which I then blend in parallel with my group buses all then feeds my MixBus. I love Sa2rate but the model 2 have some nice extras.
what are the differences between sa2rate mk i and mk ii? does mk ii have detented pots?

I'll be honest and say I'd not heard of this thing before the demo, but it is super cool. It's interesting. To me, it sounds like it's making things crisper, more defined, which seems counter-intuitive.
I am completely and utterly impressed with it!!
Kind of wish I had this unit for my last EP during mixdown! I loved hearing it bring out the low end in that Little Empire song, it put some hairs on its chest!

I'm recording my own album at the moment, I would use it for vocal recording and bouncing the master tracks through it.
would turning both the dry and wet knobs all the way up, would that basically mean the mix is at 100 percent? Still trying to understand the separate knobs for dry and wet
It seems to me as it replicates the effect of Sonnox Inflator...what are your thoughts, guys?

Wow...I was browsing for Overstayer products and suddenly bumped into a SA2RATE at KMR Audio. Then a quick googling and there you are Warren, demoing this wonderful device. Thanks, man! I think while Overstayer stuff is excellent in their own right, Looptrotter (before today an unknown manufacturer to me) offers fantastic, comparable results for a lot less money. Agree?

This unit sounds great on everything! The piano had a pretty astonishing result after running through saturation.

That's pretty wild. I'm not using the best speakers right now, so I can't really tell when it gets turned on, (with the full mix) but it's instantly noticeable when it gets turned off. That's what I look for in a piece of gear like this. Might have to throw that on the wish list.
Nice breakup. A lot of companies do a-saturation. but the quality here is much better.

On the drums I was hoping you'd turn off the low safe to hear what it would do to the bass drum. It was really bringing out the snare but without the low safe would the bass drum get bigger?

That's a great little unit, especially on the drums, bass and vox but I'm curious Warren, (playing devil's advocate) what would you have done if the unit sucked? How do you deal with a review when you don't like the product?
Hi Pat Kelly marvellous question! I wouldn’t have aired it! I might have put it up in the Academy! If I don’t like something then I don’t have the time to be negative I will just send the it back! Luckily the Looptrotter is wonderful!!

So Warren....here's the real question......does this now have a place in your own rack or will you be sticking with what you already use?

Love what it did to the piano particularly, sounded very musical. You'd have keep telling yourself to use it judiciously though.
At that price point its amazing. Im wondering how it would work with SSL bus compressor in master bus!

Interesting, wonder what is inside this box... sounds a lot like an old aphex aural exciter rack unit but with adjustable filters. I do like the wet and dry adjustment.

Have been watching one of these on Reverb. Would like to hear how it sounds for more of an aggressive distortion on vocals. Like the kind you'd hear in grittier modern rock music.
Awesome box. I wish it had detented knobs, though. Any chance of reviewing their Monster Compressor? There's not much about it out there, but it seems to be a really great piece of gear.

It has an input jack for each channel at -10 dBV, so I guess yes!

Hello Warren, I follow almost all of what you describe in most of your videos. Really very interesting information and great on the job examples no doubt. I have a basic question that may seem too basic for many folks, but it has been a root of basically every confusion I've ever had about all outboard gear or related plug ins.
Exactly when to plug in the in's and out's? I have used an old mackie 1604 VLZ Pro to a Sony PCM 800. The problem to me is that there are four L & R sends and you would think there would be four L & R returns as well. I understand that there AUX 5 & 6 options in each channel strip (These show up in the "AUX Returns" input on the back panel, but the no 5 & 6 AUX Send either. Why is that? You'd think the AUX Sends would be equal to the AUX Returns. Therefore the ins and outs of every outboard gear never matches the amount of cables to plug in. Does this make any sense at all. I'd love to try out what you are showing to us all in this video.

Saturation you say? I'm listening :D But on a serious note... Daaaaaammmmmn that thing sounded great on drums, just awesome. It sounded great on everything else aswell. I wonder what it would do to an acoustic guitar. It's just great what saturation can do for your mix. Cheers from Slovenia.
I wonder where the huge difference between saturation and compression. Could somebody explain?
release time and attack time both introduce various flavors that differ from saturation. but you've probably figured this out in the past year. kush after hours has a good video that came out recently about hearing compression that might interest you, regardless.
Would you use this unit mixing/pre-mastering or during mastering?
Hi Mark Beeson I would personally use it on individual elements of the mix and also on the mix bus. I’m sure mastering engineers could find if useful for colourisation as well.

I will now proceed to have nightmares about how much I'm going to overuse this thing when I inevitably get it. I tend to reamp stuff to get this effect, but this seems way easier and more controllable. I'm afraid to look up what it costs as I fear it'll be reasonable!
