Yeah this is why I always keep touting that the people who made this movie truly gets Batman mythos. It knows how to blur the lines between villain and victim when it comes to the foes the MC face.

On a separate note I would argue that Joaquin phoenix’s joker also was severely mentally ill, if you count that as a Batman movie Edit: plus eisenburg’s lex Luther but that was just a bad ripoff of Heath.

Paul Dano is certainly praised for what he does as the Riddler here but I still don't think he gets enough credit for how incredible his performance is, because I truly think it's one of the most well-acted and most visceral portrayals in any comic-book movie. It's amazing how there's almost two halves to his performance; the angry self-righteous killer dressed in a suit and the broken shell of that killer with a code we thought we figured out initially.
Its a long Riddler problem. Gotham was a pretty mid show but the Penguin and Riddler there were fucking insanely great and they just get shit because they are from Gotham...
This is scarily accurate to what mine and other’s breakdowns could look like at times. Props to Paul Dano for giving such a believable and scary performance as The Riddler

A lot of people are calling this cringe but honestly... that's kind of the point... I've always seen the Riddler as a smarmy little weasel thats not all there when it comes to socializing with other people. And I think his character in this film is meant to represent a high functioning Autistic person. A lot of autistic people are isolated loners within society and this encourages various antisocial behavior that appears bizarre and is hard to look at ("cringe"). He's likely in extreme distress from the childhood trauma he's gone through and he doesn't know how to properly communicate with people. Thus, he creates these elaborate death traps & puzzles for attention from a society that he feels abandoned him.
This movie was really nice. We saw more of Batman’s detective side, and the riddler was the perfect villain for that, not to mention who played him: paul dano did a great job at this

A lot of people are calling this cringe but honestly... that's kind of the point...
I've always seen the Riddler as a smarmy little weasel thats not all there when it comes to socializing with other people. And I think his character in this film is meant to represent a high functioning Autistic person. A lot of autistic people are isolated loners within society and this encourages various antisocial behavior that appears bizarre and is hard to look at ("cringe"). He's likely in extreme distress from the childhood trauma he's gone through and he doesn't know how to properly communicate with people. Thus, he creates these elaborate death traps & puzzles for attention from a society that he feels abandoned him.
