I would add a stage previous to activity. For me, forcing myself into activity echoed the force and control I’d experienced through abuse. What I find helps, is self-soothing. I say things like ‘I have every right to feel depressed’ etc eventually this might soothe me enough to inspire other self caring impulses.. like to fill a hot water bottle.. often once I am just a little bit kind to myself.. the miraculous often happens.. I find myself actually wanting to talk a walk etc.. no force required.

Wonderful video! Thank you. Having a dog is the best thing a person with depression can have. After having 46 years of depression, dogs forced me to get up and go when I felt like dying in bed.

The bonding process between a human and a dog can be a unique healing of sorts that can repair the lack of love felt in childhood. However, being in therapy helps, prior to bonding with a dog. I'm speaking from experience.

My parents butcher used to call me sheifaleh. I heard you say that word close to the end of the interview. Thank you

I'm presently on a psych ward with intense abdominal pain. Will be moving soon & have extreme stress. Can't return to my apt. Spent a year suffering there. I try to walk but pain never decreases. Want to consult with someone who deals with body pain. Esp. Abdominal. Came from alcoholic background but consulted a therapist who abused his power & sexually abused me.

This doesn’t acknowledge that ppl with trauma, or those with long term anxiety and depression, often have chronic pain disorders or neurological issues, such as migraines and these are often aggravated by exercise or make exercise impossible.
I appreciate that movement of some kind is better than nothing but if it was a simple as “got depression, have a walk” then we all wouldn’t be in this mess.
Also, did he use the army as an example of physical accomplishment, ignoring the PTSD risk that goes with war? I dunno man. This seems really tone deaf. I thought this guy was supposed to know what he was talking about.

@ Cola Hyde . Yes. I think your critique is spot on. While exercise may be one part of a strategy, it would most frequently NOT be a total strategy.
Furthermore, as we have seen from innumerable practitioners online, having a community of supporters who are familiar with the issues - (or a single sponsor) - can be tremendously helpful for Trauma sufferers.
In this video, Bessel definitely does appear to be "tone deaf" to the layered complexities that sufferers endure - which is perplexing and disappointing, given the status that he has acquired.

@@ninaromm5491 depression and anxiety are usually multilayered as you expressed. I've been through many episodes of Depression, some of which were from grieving certain phases of my life. Depression can be truly debilitating, yes. Yet they are important tells of our buried mental health issues.
A person in a bad mood will benefit from taking a walk; someone depressed will not be able to "walk it off."
As far as Anxiety goes, some Psychologists believe a diagnosis of Anxiety Neurosis is a catch all for not knowing how to categorize such individuals.
Multiple symptoms are nearly impossible to identify as one treatment symptom.
Comorbidity applies to physical problems; why can the mind not have comorbidities? And parents can be bv difficult to categorize, too!
Often I believe that all people are so unique that only we, ourselves can fix ourselves. Self discovery works. If lucky, we can find a collaborative trained Therapist to assist us in discovering our mental heath issues and walk with each person in her or his self directed approach to becoming whole, and therefore cured.

@@ninaromm5491 I totally disagree with this. I have complex PTSD and I can tell you from personal experience that you have to move your body. Period. Yes you need others to call regulate with but you need to move. This may be something as simple as doing vagus nerve stimulation exercises but you need to move. It’s not tone deaf. It’s reality
