Something that I sort of learned that wasn't taught to me properly was to look at the opponents chest... So that you can also see their chin. Train this when they are practicing. They shouldn't look at the numbers, they should watch this guys chest so that they can see his chin. The chin telegraphs a lot of punches and the second it's open you should take that shot regardless of whatever else you can do.
