  • This is why I LOVE using big lures for pike. Pike fishing using big bait imitations has to be one of the most exciting and funnest ways of lure fishing. Through this video I get into some nice fish and talk about some of the advantages of using big lures. If you're wondering how to catch pike in winter, or are after some winter lure fishing inspiration then this might also help you out! We are right in the middle of winter now and the going can be very tough, but if you know what to do and where to look it's definitely worth getting out on the bank. Ps I know I may have been a bit ambitious with my weight estimate of the last fish, the curse of enthusiasm!
As always, thank for watching! If you enjoyed this video I'd really appreciate it if you hit that subscribe button to join the Adventure Fishing UK journey. Drop a like and a comment too and i'll get back to you as soon as I can! It all helps me to continue bringing you regular content that will hopefully keep getting better and better.
The shop I mentioned where you can find pike safety equipment is called Gerrys in Morecambe. A great shop local to me. You can find their website here: www.gerrysfishing.com/

That was fun, and good release tips. Amen to big lures for pike. I've caught 20 inch jacks on 9 inch lures. Being in the US, they run smaller here, because it gets rather warm, with summer surface temps that typically hit the low 70sF/25C in mid-summer on big waters, even warmer on smaller inland waters. My biggest to date was a 37 inch (just shy of 1M) pike caught on a 13 inch (over 30cm) lure. I've caught 20 inch American black bass on that lure, who may have been more interested in chasing the invader away than eating, as such.

@@adventurefishinguk Yeah, American bass are fun to catch, great fighters. And we have *muskies,* which are a bigger relative of pike, but generally *much* more difficult to catch, except for dinks (the "fish of 10,000 casts" - but not around here!)..
Regarding which, Lake St. Clair, near Detroit, is a large, shallow lake (under 20ft/6m deep at most, except for a shipping channel) that has great fishing for both, as well as pike and walleyes (which are very much like your zander).
The Detroit River has some *great* urban fishing, Best known for walleyes, but also good for muskies, bass, and pike. And the occasional trout or salmon is caught there, too, especially in spring, almost always very good sized.
There are also some sturgeon in the system, especially the North Channel, which flows into Lake St, Clair from the upstream St. Clair River. Which is also the best general area for good sized pike.
We also have great fishing for wild carp in many venues, including urban lakes and streams. 30 inch (75ish cm) fish are not uncommon. But i haven't heard of much literal cultivation of them to produce morbidly obese fish, such as some European records, which I consider asterisk worthy.
I'd also like to someday head across the pond and catch some of those bigger European pike, as well as the different species you have over there.

I think that lure size depends of the context where you are fishing on. In my experience, i have better results with medium size lures between 10-15 cm like Rapala husky jerk, shadow rap or x-rap. The river where i usually go for pike fishing have many small size preys like bleaks. Perhaps this is the reason why i have difficults to catch pikes with big size lures.
I must say that sometimes i try some big soft lures but i rather use medium size.

interesting to hear, I barely use my heavier baitcasters at all now. My two biggest fish have been on a 10cm trout an 14g spinner! But I have always up until now stuck with big lures in the cold ethos, my idea being they'd be slower and more sluggish in the cold and would only want to actively pursue something with a bit of crunch to it to make it worthwhile. I'm not so sure these days.
