    I have to comment as I think a few of you might mention it. I dropped my rod and reel in at the start of the session and got silt inside it hence the horrible squeeking. Its been cleaned out and lubed up now ready for some smooth silent jerking 🤣

      I live on a boat on a river, nor the canal. The E.A have to sometimes cut the trees due to the path being a public highway. This makes them liable if a tree falls on some one on any part of the path. Also liable if a tree falls and a boat is hit. Its just about litigation people. U r right, that some boaters complain but its mostly they are liable. Hope this helps. Bless

      @@uselesspilgrim8597 yeah I can understand that. Unfortunately the lengths they have gone to local to me is hard to justify. Any foliage has now been eradicated, not just problematic areas. It seems like they have not understood cutting back and have instead made them disappear. It’s a shame.

      Same here in the southwest! I thought something was up this year. On a narrow shallow canal you can’t sneak anywhere, you can forget sneaking down the bank if you see one as you’re now this giant figure rather than in between the reeds.

      I once caught a pike with the remains of a treble and trace being passed through its rear . The treble only had the main stem left and no parts from the hook points or barbs . I managed to pull it out including the trace remains. It swam away OK.

      Hooks decay by themselves in any moderately wet or humid area mate. My esox treble I had to cut as it went into just under my eyelid dissolved completely in 15days.

    • @bigduphusaj162
      @bigduphusaj162 Рік тому +1

      It's spinner trebles and cheap tackle hooks that don't dissolve they rust out takes ages kills the fish. Put decent trebles on your lures lads and if you lose one or if the fish picks up a lost lure or deadbait it won't even know it will take 3 week at most to pass out even with multiplle trebles. There's books from the 80s showing the damage older trebles did to pike guts and the intestines seemed to take even the old ones till they rotted out and the fish got rid of it. There's pike that swallowed steel toecap boots and got found with just the steel bit inside them with the two thick folded over bits the laces go through😂 fish lived a full life with a steelie In its gut. Then we've got the monster Scottish pike that got found with bird skeletons attached to their backs when a large Eagle or Falcon has grabbed it and stuck the talons in and the pike has been too powerful so showed it who's boss and drowned the thing. Pike are robust as it gets the stress thing is if you put them in other places against their will they don't like it at all.

    Enjoy your content as always! I like how pure and genuine you are! Credit to angling! I would say here in Norfolk it’s been a really tough season for me and fellow anglers alike. We have an issue with poaching- those who unfortunately rinse the places dry. Used to be night and day different growing up! Now lucky to get one out. Banks are littered with rubbish too! Beautiful place- just abused. That’s one element and lots of otters. Has anyone else had similar issues? Are rivers are just not patrolled like they used to be!

    Great video as always Chris, good tip on the weights which I will try next time I am predator fishing. Owe you a big thanks after last weekend's session, used your freelining tip about having an extra shot 8 inches up from main to keep the line down and avoid spooking nervy fish, took 3 chub out from a local small stream - 3lb 4oz, 4lb and then an absolute beast of a PB at 6lb 8oz that went like a train. Water is under 3ft deep and as you say in this video the holding points are key, overhanging branches on the far bank that the EA have yet to destroy so plenty of cover.

    That river looks plenty healthy. They must have had to trim the trees for good reason. Just a word on your lures. I've been catching northern on artificials here in WIS for 60yrs. Some kind of an eye on your lure adds a lot. It could be what triggers the strike. keep it in mind sometime ... perhaps compare your catch with and without an eye on the front. Well, the canal I fish you can definitely see it's otters and we have a really big problem with them on the tidal and the canal. I know bad angling plays apart, but not what I've seen. Half eaten fish is definitely otter damage. Even took a swan the other week. The real problem for me is that the carp I fish for in the canal are the last of the original stock, and the otters are working their way, though. Top skills my friend, proof if it was ever needed that practice makes perfect. I have pike fished every winter for half a century now but have frankly never developed your pike handling skills, partly because of always using forceps and gloves. Now finally I realise using bare hands unhooking them can be faster and with more feel less damaging too, just not for the novice. Big up doing it locally too.
    Little tip for a product review for you, the latest black purpose made snapper unhooking cradle. Not what you think. A bit like the Korum pop up barbel cradle which folds in half and has a carry handle and has become an instant hit for the river angler. The mat forms the carry sleeve for the pop up frame. Long and thin with a built in clear measure for the length of big perch, Zander, chub and Jack Pike. Long and thin, it’s the perfect easy carry mini mat suited perfectly for a lot of the fun fishing you do.All for just over a tenner in these cash strapped times. Weighs next to nothing, packs down very small so perfect for your biking. And genuinely, because I tried, you can put the whole thing up from scratch single handed whilst playing a fish. Ideal for when it’s all hard surfaces around a lock approach and the like. Bought mine from Future Angling just south of Newark. Bit of a trek for you to get there, straight up the A46 fully dualled so easy travel though, but I highly recommend the effort. I have never seen a tackle shop better stocked for the lure angler. You will be like a kid in a sweet shop I can tell you.

      What is worse is that we are paying them to do it. That bit of tree vandalism probably cost ten rod licences. They should block the flow so that floodwater goes onto the fields.

      You need to do this or everything dies. You need to do a complete knock back every once In a while for these places to look as nice as they do. Wildlife doesn't care it simply moves downstream or upstream, people moan about the wildlife, most of these species have been on the planet longer than we have yet people think they roll over and die because a chainsaw and mower have went by. Really? Nah, do some research, the only reason these places aren't in a state of total decay is because we know when to do a full knock-back and even the timescale will be based on previous data collected on algae and wildlife diseases etc.. plus you all know what out councils and waterway bodies are like they don't want to have to phone the mower guy till they get reports in that it's "overdue"
      I know it sucks to see a freshly knocked back bit that looked lovely in bloom but truly guys in the long run were doing the right thing. I'm a Geologist now used to be a boat builder and I've been a Fisherman my entire life.

      @@oldbloke135 read my other comment on this thread. This needs done mate it just does. It's my job now to deal with anyone taking the pish up here in Scotland that even bothers doing a wreckless job.. but this isn't a wreckless job mate it's what needs to be done and if you don't do it the place will decay rapidly. Walkways near canals & rivers and even some areas of out lochs need the full trim back every so often. I need to deal with Lomond as well as another 4 huge waterways in the Trossachs and its for the better. Sometimes they will do it because of algae alerts or wildlife diseases and they need to be done if you don't deal with them as a priority you've not done your job correctly. The data shows that these things cause rapid destruction for everything in the area that's not made of stone and can affect huge areas if left to spread. It sucks having to see it I don't like that part myself.. but just so you know its for the better.

    The EA are idiots. You would have thought they would have known to leave at least a few trees for cover for fish and birds. So frustrating. Some great hits though Chris. That 5 pounder in the middle really hammered the lure! Unlucky with the double mate but you will return on another day to try again.☺🎣

    I love pike fishing. I don't see why some folks see them as a nuisance. Perhaps because they're such predators. Watching from the USA! Actually I'm in Canada atm fishing!

    Love your videos, you're enthusiasm is infectious! I wonder what part of the country you're fishing? down south we have loads of great rivers but I don't hear much about pike captures.

    Hi Chris, well done, your enthusiasm to pull out a stinker and do an autopsy is commendable. But how do get the stench of a dead fish off your hands? I think I told you before, I last handled a dead fish in the water some 55 years ago. I can still remember the pong!

    There was a fantastic fishing spot near Moira in Leicestershire which was a cut off the Ashby canal. The EA decided to 'tidy it up' and destroyed paradise!

  • @krisey6060
    @krisey6060 Рік тому +1

    Would you say that applies to canals as well? If you can find trees, bridges for cover etc you will find the fish? Love the videos 👌

    • @konsta0415
      @konsta0415 Рік тому +2

      Definitely does, especially if the canal has desent flow and even without flow rocks and all sorts of things will attract pike because they can ambush prey from the structure, so it's definitely worth finding and fishing cover.

    I've probably watched this video around 10-20 times since its been released but its just occurred to me the the balls you must have to reach right into the pikes mouth at 8:13 with your bare hand to unhook it. It could have given you a nasty chomp 🤣🤣 Ive always got a short pair of forceps hanging off me somewhere that I can quickly grab to unhook fish.

  • @scottandrewjohnmiddleton8676

    Brilliant video shame about the dead pike I wish people wouldn't fish for them if there not confident in handling them or don't have the right gear to unhook them they are a beautiful fish that need a bit of respect
