Not a mixer. That's a guitar making those sounds. Tom Morello makes sounds with a guitar that few others do.
That was incredible!
Sick huh. Every freaky sounds you hear with rage are all guitars and drums. ✊🏽✊✊🏻✊🏿
It's a wah wah pedal.
You see Tom pumping the pedal in the video during the intro.
@@RobSquadReactions it's called wah-wah pedall, like it sounds (search for: Whammy)
Amber's 2 questions (9:45):
1. The red flags uphill are a call to agitation, and to unity. Matadors wave red flags in front of bulls to anger them, and the color red has often been associated with revolution.
2. The "bulls on parade" lyric is a sort of pun, because that's a phrase often used at protests to say that the police or the military are there/charging at you, but it also refers to bulls as in Wall street bulls, people who buy and sell stocks aggressively, especially in weapons dealing, and make millions off people dying overseas.
The whole song is a criticism of the military's massive budget and the lyric "they rally around the family, with a pocket full of shells" refers to how both US parties in the 90s talked about "family values" while funding war and weapons over healthcare, housing, education, etc.
Uh, the red flags are very specifically symbols of the international communist movement, just as the black flags are symbols of the international anarchist movement. You'll find both on the insignia of many "antifa" (anti-fascist) groups, as the two communities have frequently had to work together to avoid extermination by the fascist menace (communists, anarchists, and trade unionists were some of the main targets of Nazi purges, along with, of course, Jews, Slavs, Roma, the disabled, homosexuals, etc. Bet you can think of some current groups that share that list of targets).
"Bulls on parade" comes more-or-less from The Great Depression (caused largely by the oligarchic economic system we're currently and inexplicably replicating), when many desperate people were forced to resort to making dangerous leaps onto moving box-cars in order to move to new areas in search of paying work. Private rail companies would hire vicious mercenary security guards (the "Pinkertons" were one well-known and reviled example) to roust such riders. These aggressive guards were called "bulls", for obvious reasons, and "bulls on parade" meant a bunch of them were coming to crack the skulls of anyone they found, so best get steppin'.
Bulls on parade is also used in this context to refer to armored cops smashing through lines of protest. They're the bulls.
@@aspect57 Bulls also refers to Wall Street. Have to remember RATM was the voice for occupy Wall Street. Bulls on Parade... Emperor with No Clothes... Same vibe.
The red flag 's because they're comunist
@@michaelccozens Yes RATM has always been pretty straightforward with their sympathy for communist movement. Im not entirely sure about if all of them are communists though. Would be cool if they were.
Song is from the album: Evil Empire, released: 1996. This song deals with the US military and their aggressive tactics. It mentions how the arms industry encourages war to get military contracts with lines like, "Weapons, not food, not homes, not shoes, not need, just feed the war cannibal-animal," and "What we don't know keeps the contracts alive and moving."
EXACTLY what i got from the song! They want to keep the contracts for war alive and kept a secret
My favourite verse out of any song ever. Following on from the above "Weapons, not food, not homes, not shoes, not need, just feed the war cannibal-animal. I walk the corner to the rubble that used to be a library. Line up to the mind cemetery, now. What we dont know keeps the contracts alive and moving. They dont gotta burn the books, they just remove 'em while arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells. Rally 'round the family, pocket full of shells" Pretty profound.
@@RobSquadReactions it’s deeper than that, it’s about what our society values it has a lot to say about media portrayals of people and how military stockpiles fill as fast as jail cells.
The guitarist is Tom Morello, who’s the nephew of the first democratically elected leader of Kenya, and the vocalist is Zach de la Rocha, the son of a Mexican revolutionary artist.
also, Zach de la Rocha was on run the Jewels last CD.
It's more so about politicians that campaign on a "family values" ticket yet have shares in companies like Haliburton or other military contractors and are more interested in how much money they can make from war than how they can help families.
Zach de la rocha is the singer he’s made songs with Run the Jewels and other rappers. He would smoke most modern rappers easily.
Wuuuuurd
100% - one of the most under-rated artsists who cuts across funk, hip hop, rock genres. Miss him and RATM
*Does smoke
@@hernandezfernandez1565 They have some shows coming.
He already did.....
That was Tom Morello. He is a brilliant guitarist and a pretty amazing guy.
Doesn't he have a masters degree in political science from Harvard? He's super intelligent.
@@leonel8831 Graduated with honors. I thought it was only an undergraduate degree. But impressive nevertheless.
@@ericgamino478 I heard he gets on social to argue politics. That's how I heard about his achievements. Very impressive.
Also does the nightwatchman. Check out his pro workers video where he showed up or strikin workers, and when he played with Bruce Springsteen on "ghost of tom joad". Toms probly best guitarist in history.
He was on Star Trek: Voyager once. That was surprisingly pleasant. :)
I am so glad you found these guys. They are very blue collar, power to the people, anti establishment. Tom Morello is a gift to us all both as a musician and a social activist. When the Wisconsin legistlature was passing a law to bust unions, Tom Morello showed up and stood with us during the fight. Their music is powerful stuff with meaning.
Except he is the machine now. forcing vax on everyone. and he's rich a.f. which is ironic since he's a devote communist.
Wake Up, Know Your Enemy, Down Rodeo, Killing In The Name and many more.
Make sure you do lyrics, though. What Zac is spittin is too important to miss!
We will for sure check them out we loved their sound and the meaning behind their song! ppl are saying a lot of their songs have deep meaning to them
@@RobSquadReactions you won’t regret it!
I second ALL of these and definitely use the lyrics versions!!
YES!!!!!!! Can't wait for them to go down the RATM rabbit hole :)
And testify
When he says rally around the family with a pocket full of shells he's talking about how the same politicians who are talking about family values and putting family first are focusing on weapons and war while in office.
War and policing.
It's also about how the right-wing "family values" message has a heavy undertone of racial bigotry, in an attempt to create fear in its adherents. The right-wing, as we see even today, wanted white people to be terrified of "thugs" (thinking you can guess their hypothetical skin-tone) invading their homes and killing their families, so they'd be too busy "rallying around the family with a pocket full of shells" to notice the oligarchs who fund this racist culture-war nonsense making-off with all their wages.
Lyric analysis is the key to understand what " Machine" they're raging against. Lyric videos are very helpful. Remember this all started in 1991. Rodney King, poverty , social injustice. etc. They were woke before woke was a term. Sadly it's still very relevant today.
Their politics were always a bit muddled to me
@@xx-ug9hn All of them are Leftists, ancoms and communists
@L.S. Chimera well of course, but those are wildly different ideologies. RATM were still an awesome band so they obviously weren’t right wingers 🤣
@@xx-ug9hn real communist (non totalitarian)aren't so different from Anarchist, it's almost the same thing
TRUTH!
Rage woke a lot of us up in the 90s. We're still here and mobilized.
Haven’t been able to sleep, since.
Yeah, they woke me up, I threw their cds out when I realized what they really stand for
@@justcnorell your loss man. Educated lyrics, not telling a story you’re used to?
@@justcnorelland yet here you are. We can't miss you if you don't leave. Buh-bye!
@@mikekennedy4661 Try again, more like lyrics glorifying communism and racism towards white people with blanket statements, generalizations and stereotypes. You tredies are a bunch of ignorant group/collectivist thinkers who act like herd animals. This band woke nobody up, it put people into a deeper sleep
Welcome too Rage against the Machine.
Thinking we may stay awhile lol
Zach de la Rocha's lyrical anger against injustice is a thing of beauty
except he loves communism the biggest injustice in history. ask the millions of dead Russians and Chinese..
✊
Some spine tingling shit right there…
Anytime you listen to RATM for the first time, you need lyrics. Lots to digest. They been trying to tell ppl for 30+ years now. 🔥 Also, yay Amber!
I just love seeing younger ppl digging the music n songs I’ve loved for 30 yrs! I feel old lol but it’s so nice to see the music still appreciated! RAGE ROCKS ❤️
Rage Against The Machine changed so many of us during its time.
You went from all excited and smiling at the start to realizing how serious Rage is with their music. Music is truth.
Tom Morello always makes people ask “is that a guitar making that sound?” He was the bands DJ
I'd recommend watching the lyric videos with Rage, it helps follow along to really pick up the amazing bars and the meanings behind the songs. Also, Freedom is an early Rage song that is very much worth checking out. Actually, can't go wrong with any of them. The great thing about Rage is that they are still relevant. The sad thing is that they are still relevant.
There are two exceptions I would make for this: Testify and Freedom, both due to how important the imagery on screen is to understanding the song as a whole.
One of the most important bands ever! Fighting for human rights!
Lol!! Dude Tom Morello the guitarist can make his guitar sound like a turn table u wanna see someone amazing sound with a guitar check this out live and watch the solo
I legit thought it was a turn table
I once got tear gassed at a Rage concert. It was awesome!!!! Tom Morello also toured with Bruce Springsteen and performed some truly amazing solos.
The lead singer is Zack de la Rocha and he wrote most of the songs for Rage. An amazing lyricist
Here are the lyrics to this song Bulls On Parade:

I'll give you 2 female artists.
1) Jewel - "Who Will Save Your Soul" or "Standing Still"
2) Alanis Morissette - "Jagged Little Pill" or "Thank You"
THANK YOU!! We need to hear a female!
@@RobSquadReactions No problem man. I do highly recommend both of them but suggest Jewel over Alanis because Jewel has a beautiful and powerful voice like nothing you've ever heard before.
@@RobSquadReactions Pat Benatar is a great female to listen to. Heartbreaker is a good first song of hers to start with.
BabyMetal, Nightwish, Unleash the Archers, Jinjer...
@@NetProphet76 Come on man, let's let them get through some essentials first before we unload the heavier stuff on them. Remember they're still fresh to the scene.
Rage Against The Machine!! I heard this as a teen in the 90s. I secretly bought their self-titled album because it had a "Parental Advisory" sticker. Protest rock at it's hardest. Tom Morello on guitar was a game changer. All their albums are dope. Band broke up and joined Chris Cornell for AudioSlave.
Lyrics, lyrics, lyrics ! All rage reacts must use lyrics!
"Bulls on Parade!" is metaphorical slang used as a warning that police/soldiers/gov't officials/etc. are present, and/or taking action.
As it pertains to this song, it was written in response to the Communist wall being torn down in Germany in the late 80's, all the while the US was creating another wall at the border of Mexico. With the Soviets no longer posing a perceived threat to Americans, the military-industrial complex created fear of a new "enemy" down south, stirring up fear of Mexican and other Latin immigrants infiltrating. Fueled by this propaganda, hundreds of migrants were killed along the southern border.
The overall message of the song is that while "the machine" tells you their concern is for the protection of American families, the real concern is creating more enemies to justify continuing to feed the "cannibal animal" that is the weapons and defense industries. The needs of the poor are ignored, they lack food, housing, and education. Libraries continue to empty, while arms warehouses, like our prisons, keep getting full. Keeping the masses uneducated so they don't realize what's really going on by feeding the public the message that it's about protecting families, not protecting the profits of weapons industries.
Doesn’t Zack (singer) have Mexican ancestry as well?
@@sarahjane8146 With a name like Zach de La Rocha, I'd imagine he's at least partly Mexican or of some other Latin descent.
Awe...we do love you Amber.❤️ RATM is awesome.😀
I was not expecting that! but we loved it!!
the original rock rap band and probably still the best
The members of Rage Against the Machine are well known for their leftist anti-authoritarian and revolutionary political views, and almost all of the band's songs focus on these views.
and we fall for it every four years. all corrupt and beyond surface, intentional, subliminal propaganda. Can't be all in on left or right at this point but it makes for great entertainment i guess.Great band but times to rage against the whole machine.

Really liked that Fiona Apple song back in the day. Maybe because I was exactly the right age, kind of a shame how much she went on to hate the music video though. I get it though, almost like she got popular for how beautiful she was instead of how gorgeous her voice was.
“What we don’t know keeps the contract alive and moving. They don’t gotta burn the books they just remove em while arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells, rally round the family, with a pocket full of shells.”

Tom Morello does things to guitars that are... not natural. He's one of a kind. Love him.
"They rally round the family, with a pocket full of shells" it's and anti military industrial complex/war song
Amber makes some real smart comments - can't wait to hear what she says about Rage - perfect song too!
My recommendation for a female artist is Heart and a couple awesome songs of their is "Crazy On You" and "Barracuda." You will really dig those. Great for a road trip.
Tom Morello can scratch on the guitar just like a dj on turntables. He does it in a lot of their songs. Blew my mind first time I heard it.
I saw them live at a festival, Pinkpop. The crowed caused a minor earthquake of 1.6 on a richter scale. Next one... “Killing in the Name” , “Bullet in the Head” , “Wake Up” , “Guerrilla Radio”🤘🏻🔥
Evil Empire released in 1996. Zach De La Rocha - singer, Tom Morello- Guitar.
My fav line... "They don't gotta burn the books, they just remove 'em"
So many great female rock stars. My favorites are the groups Kittie, Garbage, Evanescence, Jinjer, Cranberries. Of course Janis Joplin will always be my number 1.
Mine too. 😍I'm pissed at myself for leaving her out.
It's nice to see you folks come around and react to the music I've been listening to for years.
Tom Morello can use guitar effects like no one else.
Their entire self-titled debut album is banger after banger, all with strong messages. Many sound just as relevant today as they did 30 years ago.
OMG guys! Rage ATM....were (still are) the most radical, politically conscious, anti-establishment, revolutionary band of the 1990s! They redefined the metal/rap genre.....and the entire music scene on both sides of the Atlantic Full stop!! They influenced an entire generation!! Revolutionary...... historic.....game changing....... legendary......thousands of bands are influenced by them.
"Killing In The Name" is another
awesome song
"Rally 'round the family with a pocket full of shells". My best interpretation of this has always been that politicians love to throw up the facade of family values while stuffing their pockets with blood money from the military-industrial complex and the NRA.
Alanis Morisette is a great female artist to start with, along with The Cranberries. If you're looking for something harder you can check out Garbage, Hole (this one might get some hate), Evenescence, Meredith Brooks, Veruca Salt, Sleater-Kinney, and No Doubt. Indigo Girls for something a bit more folk music-like. Unless you're looking for something older, then you can check out Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Bangles, Fleetwood Mac (one of the leads is the most perfect creature on the planet, Stevie Nicks), Jefferson Airplane, or Heart. Maybe something really hard? Try Kittie and Jinjer. Maybe some ska? Try Saving Ferris. There are bands with female leads that I'm not really familiar with like Paramore, Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, or Halestorm.
yeah that interpretation is also what I get out of it. It's about politicians rallying around family values while feeding the war machine.
solid list of artists too
Growing up in the ghetto in LA in the 80s..... "Bulls on parade" was code for when the cops where rolling up en masse up the street.
If you're not sure what's making a sound, it's Tom Morello's guitar. He's magic.
#BigFacts
For guitarists my age, when I first heard Dave Morello play, it was like hearing Eddie Van Halen for the first time. When I listened to their lyrics, it felt like political folk music coming out of a machine gun of truth and righteous sounds. Fantastic band. Beyond fantastic.
More Rage! But be sure to watch the lyric videos for all the songs.
They are on the sound track to the movie The Matrix. "How long? Not long!" Love them. They are such a great fit for that movie and brings out the intense feelings of urgency.
That noise is no DJ..It’s called a wa wa Pedal I think (guitarists use to distort sound in a good way) it’s true, raw music☺️!! Anything Rage against the machine LIVE 90s is good 😀Actually live, it’s even better!!
This song for me in the 90s was huge - I was in my mid-teens so listening to this song felt like I was experiencing something so different and mature.
I would love the entire first album and would love to see you react to them all. Wake Up, Freedom, Take the power back...All of them! Tom Morello is awesome!
This is the ultimate protest song. "Bulls on parade", refers to the military industrial complex (as well as militarization of the police).
Agree. Biden just gifted $82 Billion in military weapons to the Taliban/Terrorists who will delight in our demise. That is THE Machine to defeat. The machine who just funded terror…..
"Rounding out the family with a pocket full of shells." The song is about military industrial complex.
This song was made in 93.

Better make it count...)
I think this overall viewpoint is supported by the fact that his verse states "Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes, not need... just feed the war cannibal animal." There's a super energetic call to what is actually a Passive style of resistance over violence here slid into the mix that asks the listener to realize that all they're doing to violent protesters is "filling the cells" and then your response is right back to "Rally round the family, with a pocket full o' shells" which says that to keep doing this over and over is to just to rinse-wash-repeat this whole mess over and over. The existence of the band, their name, Zach's lyrics... you could all say they are their way of encouraging folks to find INTELLIGENT ways to protest that can disrupt their lil cycle here instead of participate in it.
Just my two cents...
Y’all are missing the lyrics so bad. Zack de la Rocha is a poet and his words are more relevant than ever.
3:05 it’s a wah -wah pedal on the guitar. 25 years ago some friends and I in high school auditioned this song for our high school choir’s “pop show” I played the guitar part. (The choir director wasn’t having it and we didn’t make the cut)
A couple of their songs was on the movie "The Matrix" soundtrack.
Woooo! Yeeeessss! You’re in for a treat!
"They" rally round your family with a pocket full of shells. [Bullets]=[War machine]
Btw, Zac is a legend!!!!
love the vibe, love your partner.Whole lotta love guys
The "mixer" sound you are talking about near the beginning of the song is done with a guitar pedal called a "Wah" pedal. That's a pretty standard pedal. The "scratch" part is also done by the guitar. Tom Morello is doing a technique of scraping with his hand up and down the guitar strings I believe he is also using pedal effects during that portion as well and using the pickup switch on the guitar as well to toggle between two pickups to cause the sound to cutout when he wants it to.
I used to max squat and deadlift to when the first verse kicks in. I get chills every time.
Rage was truly lovely. In a way that people should aspire to.
