I'm 46 and when Rage was big my friends and I loved it just because it sounded awesome, the rebel nature etc. Not long after I really listened to the words and message. If someone else explained, I missed it. De la O refers to Mexican revolutionary and eventual guerilla general, Genovevo de la O, who fought for the rights of Mexican peasants. I think that sheds more light on the context of what ZDLR is expressing.
Listening to RATM since 92, I fuckin love that they're so timeless that young lads are doing these vids hearing them for the 1st time. Let's not get it twisted, he spits bars on a level of KRS 1. Hip hop doesn't give Zach de la Rocha the respect he deserves for spitting killa bars

Your lyric analysis is great man. Heard this song probably a 1000 times but I’m learning stuff. Btw, I know you love guitarists. You’re hearing Tom Morello. Probably the most inventive guitarist in 30 years. All that scratching is from his guitar. He’s sick
Did you know America has arms warehouses all over the world. But their biggest one, by far, is in Israel. Do you know how quickly the prison cells of Israel, fill? ;)
A little conversion for you - "they rally round the family, with a pocket full of shells" - 'They' are the police and authorities 'rally round the family' the family is people in charge of society, tradition, old money, 'with a pocket full of shells' refers to the authorities reserving the right to violence for themselves, they kill at will and justify it later, 'Bulls on Parade' is a reference to the columns of black police SUV's that rolled through the neighbourhood when they raided somewhere...
I always wondered where the title of the song stems from. Thanks. In addition I think that the "rally 'round" line also gives me the sentiment that "they" ("The authorities") can use weapons and arms in small numbers to rally and control the masses. It brings to mind a literal un armed family being gathered at gunpoint. It can fit so many actual scenarios regardless of time or culture. A reference to a sad truth.
This line always makes me think of how politicians will make themselves out as family oriented people with good values and family views, literally they “Rally round the family” then their actions are completely contrary to that with wars, bombing, terror propaganda etc.. “ The pocket full of shells” … So they say one thing to get in office then do the exact opposite.
You gotta do Know Your Enemy, Bullet in your head, Freedom, Sleep Now in the Fire, Guerrilla Radio, Renegades of Funk... jezz RATM is a must for every black latinamerican african etc
In my opinion, Zack is an old-soul poet who also raps. As someone else here commented, good on ya for taking the time to break down and really think about his lyrics. His bars are deep with many layers of meaning that can be inferred. I've been listening to them for roughly 30 years now and I'm still able to find new nuances or subtle hints at the ways he ties things together. As I read somewhere else, the great thing about Rage is that, 30 years later, the music is still relevant. The bad thing about Rage is that, 30 years later, the music is still relevant.
Rally round the family with a pocket full of shells, referencing the military industrial complex and how politicians will “rally” round “family values” all the while waging war, making weapons of mass destruction, sending young men off to war etc etc.
“Voice Of The Voiceless;” “The Ghost Of Tom Joad” (cover of Bruce Springsteen;) “Testify;” “No Shelter;” “Freedom;” “Year Of The Boomerang.” Also, checkout Saul Williams’ “Act III Scene 2 (Shakespeare)” feat. Zack De La Rocha. And, I’ll recommend Saul Williams’ cover of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” feat. Trent Reznor (NIN.)
In my opinion they’re saying “they rally around the family with a pocket full of shells” is talking about how politicians talk about family values but enact policies of violence worldwide and continually.
I’m with you on CRT… they’re not scared their kids will be ashamed to be white, they’re scared their kids will be ashamed of them. Back in the 80’s and 90’s “family values” was the favorite phrase of most politicians, especially conservative ones so I thought the chorus was pointing out the hypocrisy of family values when you’re pushing war and guns. I could be wrong. I loved your reaction. You really get what they’re saying and you catch even little double entendres I missed despite being a fan for decades. I’ll definitely be back. Really enjoyed watching.
Thanks for doing this reaction your reaction/analysis made my day. My favorite Rage song is "Renegades of funk." school book bans in the 2022-2023 school year, and found 3,362 book bans affecting 1,557 unique titles, with more than 40% of the bans occurring in Florida.
Most of those books that are banned are basically gay child porn or books that push radical leftist theories like communism and critcal race theory. The book called This Book is Gay teaches young boys how to use the website Grindr to contact adult gay males for sex. I would hope you don't want that in elementary schools..or even high schools. They still teach black history, just not critical race theory.. which purports that you have to look at everything through the lens of race, which is very divisive, and not something want to teach our children. It teaches that white people are the oppressors and black people are the oppressed. That's not something you want to teach children in an age where we all have equal rights under the law. It gets better every year and there's no reason to divide us further.

He’s got the facts and the knowledge to back up what he’s talking about out, so he’s calm and cool. Different from his on stage persona.
"de la O" as in Oscar De La Hoya. "Dropping hits" as in Olympic Gold -medal winning and successful professional boxer. Dual American-Mexican citizen who was extremely important for both cultures in the 80s & 90s (and beyond, really).

I could be wrong. I loved your reaction. You really get what they’re saying and you catch even little double entendres I missed despite being a fan for decades. I’ll definitely be back. Really enjoyed watching.
Hey, that scratchin’ in the middle was Tom Morillo on the guitar making it sound like scratchin’.
Thanks for doing this reaction your reaction/analysis made my day.
My favorite Rage song is "Renegades of funk." It's an amazing cover and the official music video is like a three minute time line of some of the all time great influencers, in terms of music, politics and human rights.
Keep up the great content.
Take the power back, know your enemy, lyric video please. Great reaction
Best RATM reaction I've seen. Gotta have the words and you're the only one I've watched who has em. Nicely done!
Thank you fam, yea I did one reaction to them and the comments were flooded with “PULL UP THE LYRICS!” Lol so every track I do of theirs it’s a must!
I really like your reaction! Great breaking down the lyrics 👏 👏🔥
Awesome thank you!
school book bans in the 2022-2023 school year, and found 3,362 book bans affecting 1,557 unique titles, with more than 40% of the bans occurring in Florida.
It gets better every year and there's no reason to divide us further.
the layers on this lyricism is masterful
“De la O” is a reference to Genovevo de la O. Who was a general in the guerrilla force, called the 'Liberation Army of the South'.
Great reaction. These lyrics hit so hard.
Vietnow, People of the Sun, Know Your Enemy, Calm Like a Bomb... Can I donate to hear those? 😂 Great reaction and analysis 🤘
Siempre rage . Gracias por escuchar ❤😊
Denzel Curry did a great cover of this, and added a verse.

If you know the truth, you have a responsibility to make it known.
Love your work mate! 👌🤟
The best reaction to this song.
Appreciate that💪🏽💪🏽
If Miss Ruby Bridges is strong enough to suffer through being the first black child in an all white school, having ADULTS throw stuff at her and call her horrible names…… then YOUR child is strong enough to learn about it!!!!!!
You should really check out some interviews with Zack. He is incredibly articulate and quite soft spoken. He’s got the facts and the knowledge to back up what he’s talking about out, so he’s calm and cool. Different from his on stage persona.
great vibes on your reaction man
"de la O" as in Oscar De La Hoya. "Dropping hits" as in Olympic Gold -medal winning and successful professional boxer. Dual American-Mexican citizen who was extremely important for both cultures in the 80s & 90s (and beyond, really).
Lol no it's not he is talking about the Mexican revolutionary genevevo de la o
I love it when my young brothers find RATM ❤❤❤.. this is militant hip hop like public enemy...
You should do “know your enemy” next!!
Im allways happy when people react to Rage against the machine.. personal its my favorite Band. anti comercial band they dont make music for you to enjoy they Sing really what they think. They dont care ir you like or not. Just say the true about real shit.
Great video❤
For fans of this song, check out Drumeo’s video of a drummer hearing this song for the first time (without the drum track) and giving their own interpretation of how they think the drums sound for the song. It’s fucking epic.
For the longest time I thought he was saying De La Soul, but he's actually talking about a Mexican revolutionary, Zapatista.
Exactly right about crt and books. On point.
Genovevo de la O was a fighter in the Mexican Revolution.
people tend to dislike the truth because they dont want there illusions destroyed. also, the truth is like a lion, you dont need to defend it, let it loose and it will defend itself.
